My two cents about college…It is the ability to begin and finish something. Not something like a beer or watching a football game. Rather something like using your brain, gaining a degree is just that, it is about gaining something, working on a problem (subject) that you might of otherwise never have studied and stretching your mental abilities. Down the road the disciplines learned/achieved through higher learning allow a person the ability to approach problems from various perspectives. This is a great thing. It would be a tragedy to approach all of life’s problems in the same manner as you might approach two shitheads fighting over a 40 & half a rock. That being said, an education does not and cannot replace a person’s life experiences (street smarts), instead it should supplement it. Street smarts + education (not talking about Lewis) can give a person real personal power. A person with either one and not the other is only effective in limited situations and then of limited power.

Hope you are on this list... a credible source from city hall is saying that Daley, in a futile attempt to clear the clout game and to "prevent any wrongdoings brought about by past administrations" has asked the incoming Superintendant to review promotional procedures and to freeze any current or future promotional lists until the bugs are worked out. What does this mean for us? Well, thats good news for anyone who didnt do so well, terrible news for those near the top.

also heard the same... entire promotional system is as contaminated as a CPD crime scene! seems this guy is lookin to stir the pot from the top down... hence the resume requests. Only people on his radar are gonna be less than qualified exempts! Finally, time to look at the parents, not the kids! I LOVE IT!
Just because you're made on merit does not mean you were a kiss-ass, dog-ass, or a house mouse. There are those in this Department that dont test well and yet have outstanding policing skills, and good work ethic. I cant think of anyone who would turn down a merit promotion from a boss who offered it to them. Instead of ragging on those who make it on merit, why not try and network better or grow balls to approach a boss and see if they would put you in. And provide them with materials that show your work ethic or skills and why you feel you should be promoted. I get a kick out of those on this blog that think only minorities get made on merit. Please there are probably just as many whites made meritorious on this latest list as minorities.

I really liked what you said until you had to qualify it by saying "not talking about Lewis"
Honestly, a majority of Lewis students ARE doing the work and study needed to get a degree. I think the school's reputation is NOT deserved in that area.
And, yes I did get a degree from Lewis, and I worked quite hard to get it, however I attended other Universities prior to coming on the job and had the majority of requirements already, needed 33 hours for a Bachelor's degree which I took at Lewis. I didn't find it all that easy, the time committment was huge, and no one gave me an automatic A in any class. The part that was easy was getting my prior credit hours accepted by the University (although I did have a fight and lose over some humanities courses) and assistance with the application process. Another area where one might (might, no guarantee) get consideration is if you have to miss a class due to work.. the law enforcement people who teach some of the courses there usually will give consideration if an emergency arises.
Also, I would think that ANY one would find the courses in their major to be the easiest to pass, and that goes at Lewis too, but the required courses which must be taken to get the degree are no easier at Lewis than at any other school, and believe me you aren't getting any breaks in the required courses, and truly, few in the major courses... Why don't you try asking some real Lewis Graduates about this instead of just assuming the worst????

How many people on the detectives list are going to be leaving when they start taking people from the sgts list. Kind of a big waste of time to have them sit through the detective classes for two months just to have to go for sgts. training within a couple more months. But then again the city is not really known for bing efficient.

It's like the blind (sergeants) leading the sighted (old time dicks). Why do you think the clearance rate is 36% for homicides? How long have you been the police that you don't realize this?

If you think college helps dealing with these cretins that are arguing over a rock & a 40, you are sadly mistaken! I came on this job in 1986 with a high school diploma and made Sgt 11 yrs ago, no merit on that particular test. The department then decides you need a 4yr degree to become Lt? Sorry, but after having 21+ yrs (all on the street & in a district), I have never come across an incident where a degree would've come in handy. Maybe if you're looking to get into upper managment, you could require more schooling, but to be a street cop in patrol?? I honestly believe experience & common sense will be far more helpful in any situation you may come across working the street. Just my experiences/opinion.

Are you serious? it isn't the sgts fault the clearance rate is 36%, the dets work the case not the sgt, ask any det and they will usually tell you they don't need supervision, the clearance rate is in the tank because witnesses now are told they can leave when they want, and they do, or don't come in at all, no more locking people in to the Grand Jury before they are released, now the video tape rolls from th onset as well. It is a much different job than the old days, no more "gettin someone in a room."

I am a bit confused regarding the Dets. not being a promotion, but an assignment as a police officer. Why do they get new stars and a pay raise??? JUST WONDERING IF THEY ARE THROUGH WITH THIS DETS. so 40 % are from about 3 units --> Narcotics --> and some other unit #'s I never even heard of
so 40% from 3 units
and 60% from 25 districts
SO .... if you subdivide ....the 3 units each are about 13%
Then each DISTRICT is about, what? 2.2%
Are these district guys dumbfucks? or are the phone-call unit guys that fucking bright????

I learned the art of paper buying while purchasing my own. Many are bought and sold on-line. Real schools don't go for this. Didn't you ever notice whenever any CPD get a higher degree from a "real" school, ie U of Chgo, NW, St. Xavier, etc, they complete their work obligation with CPD and usually LEAVE and seek employment (and get it) with either more prestigious institutions, or seek higher status. Nicole Price I can't believe it, Nicole Price. For you that don't know, she is ADS Sandra Day's driver. Enough said right, really more than enough said. I met them both on a shooting when she was still a street deputy. All I could think was, doesn't insurance cover prozac? My very good friend use to work for the crazy Deputy when she was the Watch Commander in 7. She was crazy then, and even crazier now which is why they took her off the street. Also, I would think that ANY one would find the courses in their major to be the easiest to pass, and that goes at Lewis too, but the required courses which must be taken to get the degree are no easier at Lewis than at any other school, and believe me you aren't getting any breaks in the required courses, and truly, few in the major courses... Why don't you try asking some real Lewis Graduates about this instead of just assuming the worst????

Ask Jerry lewis graduates why they went to other schools for graduate degrees? Or why they even selected Jerry Lewis school? Less work, papers available from sudents. Same classes with same instructors accepting the same work. Instructors that lack credentials other than they are white shirts and looking for experience.

Lewis Grads, you might all be brainiacs but I've seen some of the idiots that were teaching out there. They leave a lot to be desired. Some of those teachers are the lazyiest non-prodkuctive goofs I ever say on this job and some were loud mouth bullshit artist.

Keep thinking that opinion and leave the school to serious students. They are selective and only attract serious students who are able to handle the demanding classes. Big difference between Jerry lewis and other schools. What really is a the value of a criminal justice degree? Except to make exempts look qualified.

I don't know who this R.A. is, but if you actually think that R.H. from 024 is not an excellent copper, then you are obviously not capable of forming an intelligent judgement. 5 years or 15, a great copper is a great copper - and R.H. is one of the best!

Sounds like a lot of critisism from people who never get off their ass from in front of their computers or off the fucking bar stool at the local gin mill. Rhonda has spent countless hours on the Police Memorial with very little compensation. So what she was detailed, she didn't earn overtime like the rest of her teammates back at the unit, so I'd say she sacrificed a lot-a lot of time, effort, and money. I don't see any of you do-nothings out there volunteering your free time for fallen officers. It's just easier for you to cast stones. So, have another drink, and leave another comment on the blog. And while you're at it, leave her out of it. Admit it, you are just jealous!!!

RA is a good kid with a lot of compassion for a worthy cause. So what if helping with the Gold Star Memorial helped her get some clout. Only the hairstyles on Coppers change because the cynical attitudes sure don't. In CPD there has always been two kinds; those with clout and everyone else who wish they had some.
We've always been like a bucket of crabs trying to pull each down from the top of the pile back into the dregs. As a former Detective and Violent Crimes Sergeant all any good "D" needs is the ability to interact with poeple positively and to put the story on paper.
All that hero BS stays on the street when you start working cases. Any decent Detective knows it's a thinking persons's game. She has the skills.
Stop all this hurtful innuendo. Police are always complaining how the public never gives us any respect. Do we deserve it; we don't even give each other respect.
Personally I've always thought she is to good for this job.
