Killing Chicago

The pieces are falling into place. From the Sun Times, we're going to deconstruct this thing in pieces:
  • The mayor tightened the bureaucratic belt one more notch as aldermen introduced a flurry of property tax alternatives at Wednesday’s City Council meeting.

    They include: raising the fine for red-light camera violations from $90-to-$100;
We don't know what the point of diminishing returns is here, but we imagine the City is coming close. People who get tagged once or twice are learning where the cameras are and modifying behavior at that point. Others who never paid fines because cars aren't registered to them continue to flout the law.
  • increasing from 15 cents to 25 cents a development fee on every square foot of buildable floor area;
Way to kill the desire of companies to want to relocate to Chicago...especially manufacturing jobs which are the lifeblood of any economic engine, not to mention the jobs for people to afford to live in the City. Might as well move the entire manufacturing sector to Mexico and China...oh wait, did that.
  • raising the city tax on consumers who purchase their natural gas from third-party providers
Brilliant! Tax people extra for doing what comes naturally in a capitalistic system - shopping around for the best deal. This ought to put a dent in Daley's reputation as a "green" mayor. Where's the incentive to go green if the mayor's cronies can tax you for making economical choices? And we bet that connected clout companies are the ones who pushed this through.
  • and increasing — from 50 to 75 percent -- a liquor tax hike that neighorhood bar owners are already screaming about.
Maggie Daley's campaign against neighborhood bars continues apace. With the statewide smoking ban about to hit next year and this tax hike, you can bet the small, quiet neighborhood bar is on the way out. It's no coincidence a few thousand bars have closed in town in the past 20 years while taxes went up on everything else. Bars were a great revenue generator.

And the kicker:
  • The police hirings will be delayed until the third quarter of next year and, instead of 50 officers, the mayor will hire 75. None are expected to hit the streets in 2008. [...]

And “more and more” of the 1,372 vacant positions created by a May hiring freeze will be eliminated, including most of the Traffic Management Authority positions that would have been assigned to direct traffic downtown.

You thought the manpower shortages were acute this year? We're losing 50 officer a month to retirement and we're approaching another wave of "20-and-out" people. Combine that with the hiring freeze on TMA's and you can expect PPO's to be detailed out for events. Cancel a bunch of promotional classes, too.

The slow death continues.

i wonder how much money the city would save if they rezoned the city into 25 wards instead of 50, that should be a proposal, probably would save the city a load of dough.

I am currently in the hiring process for the CPD. Tested Aug 2006, passed the POWER two weeks ago. Can anyone tell me (or reasonably speculate) if this budget will slow or freeze the hiring process for people who are already in it, or only the hiring of those 50 extra the mayor wants? Any info would be GREATLY appreciated, thank you.

I say a simple tax of 20 dollars on each set of fake finger nails applied and 20 dollars on the painting of fingernails with stupid looking designs. I know in the district I work, there is a nail shop about every third store front and many are open all night.

Bingo, the money will be rolling in!

We are down to arguing fifty?

Nice job again mayor flounder! I work at O'Hare and the order for all RCA (Traffic Control aides) that work for the city, to be moved out and to be made TMA (Traffic management authority green uniform) people came out! Heard same at Midway they want to make all of them report downtown as their contract expired and now will be tma's effective in jan! Thought traffic was bad at the airports? You have not seen nothing yet! Another great daley idea! Lets tax the redlight camera violators more, and there is also a quiet move afoot by the man daley put in as city clerk to raise city vehicle stickers again next year! We are losing so many officers every month and not hiring new ones shootings are UP again daley and the imbeciles are running wild!

what happens is people in revenue dream up new taxes, licenses, etc. not even to think of how it will effect other areas. then if city hall likes it, it's a pat on the ass for that person.

these poor businesses are pounded already w/taxes, permits, licenses, inspections, etc.

any more, and the businesses will avoid coming here; existing ones will leave to the burbs or other states/countries.

you can see 'leadership' is way out of touch with our city. sad

I'm done with this city and especially this dept. I scored decent on both of the recent promotional exams. I highly doubt I will get promoted off of either list.My only hope is the list goes for a while since the city supposedly has no money to have another test. The city sure knows how to help the working police out. Raise taxes, no promotions, no time due (its still happening), and no contract.

I give up, 13 years until age 50. Wake me up when its over!!!!!!

Hey Daley the Chicago Olympic song should be an oldie from a 1 hit wonder by steam.. Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" between your corruption, lack of management skills and now the loss of public transportation system that sucked to begin w/ I am sure they are moving themselves down the line to the can. One thing that bothers me though is the possible (yea right) that may have been involved to have Chicago named as one the finalist. but I am sure ever since 1998 when you learned this, "members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) were accused of taking bribes from the Salt Lake Organizing Committee (SLOC)" you figured this is something Chicago can do that is the Chicago way.

You are all just flapping your gums. No one cares. The mayor knows this. He knows that he can raise these taxes with impunity and get away with it.

Most people will gripe but do nothing. What did they do when they raised the smoke tax? Nothing. What did they do when they taxed pick-ups and large SUVs at a higher rate than cars? Nothing. What did the do when the last alcohol rate hike went into effect? Nothing. The same is true with the taxes on phone calls, natural gas, electricity and everything else. People do nothing but pay.

You will do nothing but pay. Me, I never voted for a Daley in my life. I refuse to vote for any Democrat in this city. There are no good ones. Not one. They are all frauds. Just like you.

You catch the CBS CTA scam story. U/C video of people selling CTA cards half-price? Shows sellers holding envelopes of them. Points out Police nearby and THEY'RE DOING NOTHING ABOUT THIS. Pam interviews Huberman who says these cards are sold to "Non-profits" and their clients are selling these. She said the "cop in Huberman" came out last week and he had a seller arrested on the Northside (No, not Johnny Northside). Well, these cards aren't really stolen then, are they? And I don't see any such arrest in CLEAR. Why don't they take their story at least one more step. Who are these Non-profits who allegedly BUY these cards from the CTA, and how do their clients end up with envelopes of them?

11/02/2007 11:19:00 AM

Here is a crazy fix for CTA- its a 1 step program....

1. Raise fares. Only the people who take it pay for it. And if LINK people have a problem with it, walk to the lika sto. Why should I pay for something I never take, or to pay for some non-working hobo to to take it? Treat it like a private industry....the cost of production goes up, you raise prices. Simple economics. Hey, the cost of cabs went up...should we raise taxes to subsidize that as well?

I just retired and was surprised to see that since the retirement age has been lowered from 59 to 55 to 53 and now to 50, the average retirement age has not gone down. Even when the city pays for any officer over 60 his health care and thought all the officers at 60 would retire it didn't happen. Actually alot stayed on and more officers from 55 to 60 especially po's 57, 58, and 59 stayed on longer to be eligible for the free health care It backfired on the city This may be surprisig but its all in the annual pension report that gives the average retirement age and you will see it has not gone down but actually in many years has gone up

All the stuff we face, rising costs for living in this city and county, the bashing we take in the media, and the immediate decline of this police department and all you care about is the hours of the tact teams. Who cares? There are greater issues at hand than worrying about what everyone else is doing. And no, I am not on tact. I take care of my business and don't worry about what others are doing because there are greater problems at hand.

Get rid of the TMA's! The only reason these jobs were created was to give jobs to people in the wards of aldermen who gave Daley blind support. A win/win for Daley and his lackey aldermen, they both get re-elected at the taxpayers expense!

All these patronage hacks do is direct traffic in the EXACT same directions as the lights do.

And that is if they are in the intersection and not talking on their cell-phones.

Worthless, all of them!

If he wants to replicate the cameras in Europe, by taking a photo of the driver of the vehicle as well as the vehicle going through the red light, he might be on a little better ground, but with the present system, his cash cow could end up costing the city big bucks instead of raking it in...

oh yeah, the republicans are soo much better. George Ryan? um jail! THIEF remember? How about the last 8yrs in this country? Who is running it? Any reason the housing market is so horrendous and economy blows and all our jobs continue to leave USA while George W is in charge? Just curious? Wake up people, its not the dems. i dont like either but wow some of u are blind

Yeah ok keep watching CNN and BIll Mahr and believing their bullshit. The economy is rolling along just fine, unbeleivable in a time of war but it is true. The housing market has NOTHING to do with Bush, it was waaaay overpriced for years and had to correct itself, if you were paying attention, they have been telling us for a few years that it was coming, coupled with lenders giving crazy loans to people that should have never got them, which led to all the forclosures.
Thank the Dems and Clinton's NAFTA for the job losses, as well as their inability to control job losses to cheap labor countries like China and Korea and the illegal immigration that is killing this country in terms of jobs lost and the economic impact in social services.

Sure, Ryan is a thief, but his scam didn't involve taxing everything we buy or own. They are all thieves, its just that Democrats tax the F out of us for social programs and Republicans don't.

Sorry, Ryan was an idiot, but Edgar was superb. If Blago, Obama, Stroger and Durbin have their way, our state flag will have a hammer and sickle on it. The proof is there, look at their voting records. DREAM is a farce, encouraging Chicago to be a Sanctuary city, extension of benefits to illegal aliens.

Boy are you stupid.
Daley is talking about adding 75 PO to his "NEW" budget. That means that if there are 10,000 PO's - in 2008 he will add 75 to that number to make it 10,075!
The current hiring will go on = he still needs to replace those lost to attrition.
If he didn't replace those lost to attrition he would have 10,075 minus 400-700 that are lost each year due to attrition.

You apparently didn't even pay attention in high school or do you have a G.E.D.? My hands got tired typing sic when quoting your reply.

DAMN, YOU'RE going to have to go back to school for some refresher courses on spelling, grammar, and punctuation!

Instead of too much college and not enough high school, you do not have enough education. Take advantage of tuition reimbursement and make yourself a little bit smarter.

Maybe, you should just follow the links provided by me and read once in a while. You might be able to actually convince someone that, by golly, you can actually read and write the English language correctly.
