All Things Considered...
We'd rather be in Philadelphia - they could use the help. A frequent reader, commentator and fellow blogger KateyKakes writes to us:
- I wanted to know if you could make mention of the assassination of Philadelphia Police Officer Charles Cassidy. He was shot yesterday (Halloween) as he was making his rounds in the neighborhood of businesses that had been previously robbed. As he was going into the Dunkin' Donunts that had been robbed on 9/18/07, he walked into a robbery in progress. P/O Cassidy, with very little time to react, had his hand on his gun as he shot in the head. After the POS (piece of shit) shot Cassidy, he ran back and took the officer's gun and fled the scene on foot.
- Officer Cassidy was given last rites at approx. 3 P.M. yesterday, and managed to hang on through the night. He was pronounced at 9:40 A.M. today.
- The scumbag is still on the loose and there is a reward of $115,000 for his capture.
This is the latest in what has been a rough few weeks for the Philly PD:
- I wanted to also note that in less than six weeks time, two retired Philadelphia officers (Ret. Sgt. Joseph Alullo; Ret. Sgt. William Widmaier) were murdered as they were working their jobs as armored-car guards, as well as three other PPD officers (P/O Richard Decoatsworth, P/O Sandra Van Hinkle and Traffic Officer Mario Santiago, and now P/O Charles Cassidy.
This is going down as a bad year all around in law enforcement, and we don't mean the scandal ridden CPD. Be careful out there.

this is sad. i don't know if people know what police officers go through.
daily we receive pdt messages about gangs who have hits out on us compounded with the fact that there are people we don't expect to kill us (i.e. p.o. marquez in 2002 by the 70 or 80 year old guy) and of course the people that simply don't want to go to jail. the other thing thats not considered is how many coppers out and out get their ass kicked and are hurt for life, this isn't a once and a while thing its just never heard by the public. these are things that the general public doesn't hear about so its hard for them to understand when we talk about burning out or that some of us are just plain angry. I don't hate the media or anyone else and i feel thats the case for most of us but some times it would be nice to get the benefit of the doubt once in a while after shootings, and accusations, on our end none of this is personal unless our life and health are on the line we don't fight people to win we fight people to live.GOD bless the officers and their families and rest in peace,I truly believe there is a special place in heaven.
GOd Bless.
R.I.P all the officers! Back each other up it is us against everyone it seems like!
RIP / Godspeed Officer Cassidy!
We still have nothing re: Ofc. Vasquez' assasination on W. Harrison?!
SHAMEFUL!
horrible, please take time out to pray for all of them, not just feel bad for them but actually pray for their souls and their families, Thank you

Trust me - they don't give a shit. This should be abundantly clear to even a moron at this point. No support from Da Mayor, other pols, bosses who would pimp their sister to get promoted, citizens and the scum media. They have accomplished their goal, demorolizing the working police. Poor saps who, due to our lower middle class background, have hard wired behavior traits, that compel us to believe that we are duty bound to protect the weak people who can't protect themselves from harm.
Bosses have used stories about the hard work of these POs as punch lines to their jokes at exempt meetings. A former academy classmate [aka "fly on the wall"] relayed some of the overheard comments made by members of the awards committee at a past meeting. Big laughs for asswipe CW, as he quipped, "I don't believe they were really in that much danger..." as he denied the award.
And these are the people who are supposed to set the pace.
THE CITY OF BROTHERLY LOVE LOST A GOOD ONE. MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS TO YOUR FAMILY AND THE ENTIRE PHILADELPHIA POLICE DEPARTMENT. REST IN PEACE BROTHER.
Officer Cassidy was a 25 yr vet of the Philadelphia pd, married and the father of three children. He was the third Philadelphia police officer shot this week. Please dont think that this can't happen in Chicago. All we have out there is each other. Back each other up and stay safe. God bless Officer Cassidy and his family.
God bless these officers that have passed and God bless the Philly Police Dept.
SCC,
Thank you so much for the post. I apprecite it greatly.
Prayer services of many faiths were held all over the city today to honor and pay respect to Officer Cassidy.
As of this posting (12:25pm EST), the POS is murdered P/O Cassidy is still at large. Ther have been many leads, but still nothing.
The surviellance tape of the incident was sent to Quantico for enchancement and the Feds are very active in the case also.
As mentioned in my email to you, the reward for this scumbag is at $115k. If I saw him and had the opportunity to turn him him, I'd give the money to Officer Cassidy's family, as it's the right thing to do.
If the POS somehow ends up in Chicago, think of your brother in blue and pray the POS resists so he will spend an eternity taking a long dirt nap.
Thank you again, SCC, for taking my request. It's more than appreciated.
Just as I say a prayer to Saint Michael everyday when my boyfriend straps his vest and gun on, I say a prayer for all of you.
Please be safe out there.
I pray the family gets justice for their senseless loss.
God Bless this fine Officer and my prayers to his family and fellow Officers. RIP
SCC,
I've obviously screwed up on the email that I sent to you (my apologies)....
Officer Decoatsworth was shot in the face and is recovering. He was fresh out of the academy when he was shot in the face with a shotgun by yet another POS in the city. Decoatsworth was still able to chase the scumbag and fired 7 shots at him. The doer was apprehended and yes, he had other brushes w/ the law.
P/O Coatsworth is home from the hospital and is now recovering.
Officer Van Hinkle was on duty down at Univeristy City where there are large gatherings at the night clubs that let out. The "let outs" bring in between 300-800 people and fights break out, so there were officers already stationed to handle the crowds.
A group coming out of the night club didn't want to yield, although they were already told to, and they were yelled at to get their asses in gear. One in the group turned and fired directly at police and stuck Officer Van Hinkle in the ankle.
The great news - the scumbag will be taking a forever dirt nap. The best news - Officer Van Hinkle is home recovering and will be ok.
The next shooting happened the night before Officer Cassidy was shot in the head.
Traffic Officer Santiago was shot and wounded by a gunman who had just shot 3 people before shooting Officer Santiago in the shoulder.
Santiago gave chase and the POS crashed his car. He fled and jumped into the Schuylkill River, and his body was pulled from there the next morning.
So again, the great news is the POS will be taking a forever dirt nap, and Officer Santiago is expected to make a full recovery.
Sorry for the mix-up.
And as I tell my boyfriend everyday when he straps on his vest and his gun, please be safe. Our city here has had our share of tears, and I'd hate to read about anymore anywhere.
Thank you all so much for what you do to keep citizens like myself and my family safe. You are appreciated more than you know.
Again, be safe out there.
Kate
God Bless him and his family
