What the Future Holds

  • The once-daily Chicago Defender is returning to its century-old roots as a weekly newspaper, effective Feb. 13.
  • Ransom and Campbell wrote the new weekly version of the paper will offer more local news, sports and in-depth news coverage, as well as enabling the Defender "to secure more distribution points in the Chicagoland area, to make the newspaper more accessible to the general public."
They can't maintain an audience, so they pass it off as an accessibility and streamlining move to "secure more distribution points." Or maybe they've reached a saturation point for their bullshit, the audience is realizing they've been sold a bill of goods for the past few decades and they're actually growing up and (more frightening to the publishers) growing out of victim-hood.
That's the Sun Times in two years.

Maybe we can have a party for their staff and the sun-hard-times at some bust-out bar. Is the First Affair Lounge still open at Laramie & Lake? If not, lets party at EL GATO NEGRO (Irving/Ashland). B.Y.O.G. (GUMPS).........
Perhaps MOPE-RAH is available.

Wouldn't "Chicago Offender" be a more appropriate title for such a publication, given the readership?

Daily newspapers across the country have folded in years, not just the Defender. It served its purpose. While the daily Chicago newspapers through the years ignored the black community the Defender served its people well.

Growing out of "victim-hood?" How can you dispute what has been done to the black community?

Right, "bullshit" like the civil rights movement, and drawing attention to the lynching epidemic south of the Mason-Dixon line from Reconstruction through the 1950's. Oh yeah, and offering one of the earliest public platforms for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in his struggle (still unfulfilled) for true equality for African-Americans in this country was kind of a wasted effort as well.

As for "victim-hood"? Well...let's see: 300+ years of slavery, followed by 100 years of Jim Crow in the south and de facto second-class citizenship in the north...

What?! There's more? The US has more of its citizens incarcerated than ANY NATION ON EARTH at roughly 2.2 million (the United States of Security). That's more than China, a totalitarian gulag with nearly five-times our population. Though African-Americans comprise of just 8% of the US population these descendants of slavery and Jim Crow are nearly 50% of Prison America. Coincidence? Maybe, but I doubt it.

Of course we have the thoroughly discredited "War on Drugs" to thank for this state of affairs which has been no more successful in stemming the sale and use of illegal drugs than was Prohibition (which single-handedly created organized crime as we know it in this country) before it, but I digress.

Why on earth should anyone lament the demise of a newspaper that published the writings of James Baldwin, Paul Robeson, Langston Hughes, Nora Neal Hurston, and W.E.B Dubois among scores of other African-American artists and intellectuals of the 20th century when few mainstream outlets would? Forgive me SCC for I’m sure you know best. I was only thinking out loud.

IF it comes out weekly, it has no relevance as a newspaper. No purpose. It has become a magazine.
And who will advertise in it anyway?

The Sun Times just fired their TV columnist Doug Elfman in the budget cutback. When the Sub Times folds, some of their columnists like Roeper and Mariotti will go the Tribune and some of the Trib columnists will be fired. WHen the Daily News failed, Don DeBatt was hired by the Sun Times and Jerry Davis was let go. Royko went to the Sun Times and Jon and Abra were let go. Kass could be replaced by Roeper and be the one left out in the end.

If you're referring to the Chicago Reader, have you visited the Clout City web page/blog on city and county politics?

This blog has a completely open posting, no comment approval needed before your comment appears, only minimal moderation from the editorial staff, primarily legal liability related.

You may disagree with the apparent editorial bias of the printed paper, but, on this open format board of theirs, you have the opportunity to express your opinion with prior approval.

Give it a visit, post a comment, see what reactions you inspire.

I can't. Everything seems tailored to make them stop acting like petulant children. I'm glad you agree.

The READER is by far the most anti-police paper in Chicago. It's free because none of their dead beat yuppy readers will pay to read it.

They are ANTI everything except , of course, anything GAY or LIBERAL democrat. Come to think of it gay and liberal are the same thing.
