DuPage County State's Attorney Joe Birkett is jumping into the governor's controversial offer to put state troopers on Chicago's streets to fight what the governor called "out of control" crime.
"I urge you to stop disparaging the Chicago Police Department, who, in my opinion, have done an outstanding job in their fight against street gangs," Birkett told Gov. Blagojevich in a letter today.
We appreciate the support, but we were disturbed by the rest of the release. Birkett mirrored J-Fed's call for the governor to reinstate the State Police gun tracking unit. This idea being repeated by a politician brings up a question or two:
- J-Fed is learning how the game is played. Do what Daley says and be spared embarrassment.
- Blago is on the verge of impeachment and/or Federal charges. That mean Lisa Madigan is running for governor.
- Madigan occupies the spot that Birkett ran for a few years back.
Sorry to be so cynical, but Birkett repeating a J-Fed statement so soon after J-Fed got his ass chewed by Daley make us wonder if Birkett is making deals with the Machine for a shot at Attorney General when Madigan runs for Blago's spot. Hmmmm.

The push for the State Police to "assist" the CAGE teams is because ISP can be accompanied by our CAGE team here in Chicago on an "implied consent" compliance check of the status of any gun purchased in Illinois. You MUST produce the gun or a record of its disposition for the ISP guys, and this is the entry needed by our CAGE team to invade your house! Daley is convinced that the majority of crime guns are obtained via residential burglaries, thus his desire to strip all homes of guns...by whatever means! His CAGE guys are all about to get their asses handed to them for fudging search warrant affidavits. The ISP coorperation would solve this petty constitutional hurdle. Folks, Daley is not your friend, and he is targeting US.
Birkett is scumbag!!!!!! Ask any copper who works in Dupage County and they will repeat what I just said.
Birkett is a politician just like the rest of them. Quietly Birkett's office has fucked many good police officers.
I can tell a ture story where a police officer was told resign or be prosecuted for aggravated battery. The officer made a legal traffic stop and lawful arrest for a traffic warrant. The officer pushed, I repeat pushed (it was on the officers in car camera) the arrestee's boyfriend away from his squadcar after he didn't follow verbal commands. The shithead beefed on the officer. The officers dept immediately sent the tape to the Dupage County States Attorney's office. Birkett's office filed Agg Batt charges against the PO. The officer resigned and the case was dropped.
Sorry boys and girls I take crook county anyday. This story is one of many nightmare stories i've heard from our brothers and sisters in blue from Dupage County.
I grew in Dupage County by the way. I won't be going back anytime soon!!! I stay here with the CPD and retire to rural county when I'm done.

Yeah, Birkett is a politician, but as far as I have seen, a friend to the police and a pretty loyal type for a pol. At least he has the balls to say something positive about CPD when no one else is willing to do that.

A few comments by the commander of 022 that really got us going and then some words of encouragement by JODY. He says be agressive, make street stops. I say FUCK YOU. Last time the working police tried to be agressive you wind up in the BIS program or some clown has you on his video phone across the street. Oh after the roll call all the squads went down some side streets with lights and sirens on. That should stop the ghetto garbage from killing each other. For you po's that have less than three years on it's not too late to get the hell out of this shit city. be careful and back each other up.

What on earth is a gun tracking unit? Is this yet another program that assumes criminals will follow the law and register their firearms?
As a law-abiding citizen, I don't see what value this has in fighting crime whatsoever. I own guns, and none of them have made me want to kill people. In fact, the only thing I have "killed" with them are paper targets and clays...
I can't stand when citizens are treated like no-nothing cattle. We don't need a nanny..we need police with the authority to go after criminals, and leave the rest of us alone. Honestly, we can defend ourselves if necessary, but we shouldn't be deprived of that right because some people use firearms to cause crime. Some people drink and drive too, and yet the state still gives driver's licenses away to people who can not even read or speak english, let alone drive a car.

I agree, I like Joe Birkett too. I have met him many times and he is a very down to earth guy. He grew up in 015 and his family moved to Elmhurst for the schools. He likes the police and attends PO benefits and events.
I think Birkett's motivation is that DuPage is not the sleepy west suburban neighbor anymore. The demise of the CHA and migration of CHA residents to suburbia has influenced our suburban Law Enforcement counterparts. I think Birkett is feeling the effect of Chicago's wylie populus.
Nice dot - to dot puzzle action there SCC. You just may be on target. However, the thought of two Madigans running the Ill show makes me want to vomit.
Just to weigh in from 630 land.
Joe is OK, overall. We have certainly had worse SA's. He has reacted pretty well to the influx from the Shining City on the Lake of future doctors, NBA stars and rap artists about to turn their lives around.
His main problem is his ambition...he can play politics with some of the best. Unfortunately it does influence his office.
For example: Felony appovals go way down when he is trying to play in the bigger sandbox of state politics for 2 reasons:
1: "hey voters, look at my conviction rate!"
2: ASA's trying to make the boss look good and hopefully get the word thaey can take his place when Big Joe moves up. "hey joe, look at my conviction rate!"
Reason #2 has sadly become the norm out here, I think. We have some ASA's with balls the size of BB's. Almost every PD around me (and mine) has some hot case should be charged, but is on the back burner because some ASA won't step up and touch anything but a slam dunk. Or they want some ridiculous "just one more interview", hoping you will just give up and go away.
I think he'll run for AG eventually. Anyone would be better than what we have.

There's a huge hitch in your plan bright eyes. I know for certain that whenever you tow a car to ANY impound lot in the city, any sort of "bling" is stripped off the ride even before it goes to auction. The only ones who will make out on that are the tow drivers or the impound lot operators.
Come up with a better idea than that Sparky and I might just break out a pen!
