They Found What Now?
- A cleanup crew found a knife Monday near where a 9-year-old girl was found stabbed to death last week in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood.
An intern with Cleanslate, a nonprofit beautification business, found the "kitchen-type knife" while raking in a vacant lot about 100 feet from the alley where Mya Lyons' body was found, said Audrey Geddis, a crew chief.
Geddis said the knife looked relatively new and had what appeared to be blood stains on it.
Channel 2 and Channel 7 also cover the story. Another CPD blog (wink wink) has an interesting take on the situation and wonders why the media beat police to the scene in what is probably one of the bigger "heater" cases in recent years. We don't think you can directly lay this one at J-Fed's feet, but it calls into question our evidence collection techniques.

Jimmy Maurer takes a hit from the Inspector General.
The TSA inspection controversy is the second recent embarrassment for Maurer, a former chief of patrol for the Chicago Police Department.
Last year, Maurer was investigated by the inspector general for allegedly allowing his son to park his car at Post 10 -- a secured area adjacent to O'Hare Terminal 3 -- during a two-week vacation.
Sources said Inspector General David Hoffman accused Maurer of providing a "blatant perk for a family member" and recommended that the O'Hare security chief be suspended from his $123,396-a-year city job for up to two weeks.
Maurer claimed the city had no policies prohibiting the parking perk. Pride said he received a written reprimand and was forced to reimburse the city for the cost of parking at O'Hare for a two-week period, as Hoffman had recommended. But Maurer was not suspended.

Honor posthumously for jumping on a grenade in Iraq, giving his life to save his fellow Seals.
During Mike Monsoor's funeral in San Diego, as his coffin was being moved from the hearse to the grave site at Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery, SEALs were lined u p on both sides of the pallbearers route forming a column of two's, with the coffin moving up the center. As Mike's coffin passed, each SEAL, having removed his gold Trident from his uniform, slapped it down embedding the Trident in the wooden coffin.
The slaps were audible from across the cemetery; by the time the coffin arrived grave side, it looked as though it had a gold inlay from all the Tridents pinned to it. This was a fitting send-off for a warrior hero.

Mauer should have arranged a ride for his son using his driver, Mike Semi. Otherwise, he is useless at personnel.
Maybe if we had 10 hour days and didnt have to work 6 days in a row we would be more alert and would have found the knife.
The clean up crew while cleaning the vacant also found 23 handguns, 14 rifles, 16 kilo bricks of cocaine, 12 stolen vehicles, a blue barrel with a woman's body and a small airplane with Steve Fossett's body. But to the cops searching, it wasn't their fault, the weeds were pretty high.

When the 5 where "assasinated" inside the apartment building, the scene was taped off about 2 blocks in every direction. this was taped off like a shell casing buried in grass. you should have seen how close the media had set up by the crime scene. FS section should check some of their shoes for evidence. The knife proabably came from one of their lunches if it was found a few feet from the scene. The scene should have been properly supervised from the beginning.
They should take a long hard look at the half brother that was last seen with her!

We didn't have much of a crime lab when we had our own. A civic organization (either the Chicago Crime Commission or the Better Government Association) did a scathing study and report on our crime lab in the late 80's.
The Crime Lab was filled with civilian political hires. Procedures were not up to contemporary scientific standards. Much of the evidence submitted was never processed or accounted for. The Lab work was shipped to the state shortly thereafter.

The CPD bosses of yesteryear that knew their jobs would have had another crew on scene at daybreak looking for weapon. It is rudimentary police work. The bosses of yesteryear weren't geniuses. They just gave a damn, and if they didn't give a damn, the detective or a beat guy would have been back there looking for whatever of their own volition. They wouldn't have been embarassed by a weed whacker.
And say what you want about John Burge, a personal police hero of mine, but he would have been out their himself with his MEN and they would have found the weapon, long before the weed whacker found it.

The City's degrading contract offers, both financial and otherwise. The lack of quality equipment (hell, my unit can't even get a working fax machine and it's been six weeks without one) and vehicles. The new bosses who are beholden to Weis (and yes, he said that publicly), who are afraid to step up and lead because they'll be decapitated before the words leave their mouths. The incompetent bosses who were elevated solely on the basis of their 'resumes', with barely a perfunctory five minute 'interview'. The out and out lies about manpower, when every one of us knows they can't physically man all the beats and rapids on a given day. All of the above, and more, are the cause of our, shall we say, discontent.
And it's not the fear of lawsuits that gives us pause. It's the fact that we work for the 'city that settles' that makes us worry. The City has tried several times to separate itself from us and our actions taken in the line of duty, trying oh-so-hard to make us PERSONALLY liable for financial settlements, which is terrifying considering the 'defense' they give us is a Corporation counsel still wet behind the ears without a clue of what to do, how to say it or what police work just might actually be.
I'm a minute away from pension and Jody and company isn't going to get a chance to take it away from me if there's anything I can do about it.

In my opinion, E.T.s and F.I.s are not expert witnesses for the court because the Illinois Department of Professional Standards only recognize them as Certfied Police Officers. The Lt. of the Forensic Services Unit told the officers to get certified with IAI, International Association of Indentification. The certification consist of reading three books, take a written test with passing of 75%. The certification initially cost $150.00. Those passing would be certified in Crime Scene Investigations. Each year the IAI had a convention and seminars in forensics. But of course this is the city that works and would probably deny an officer code 49 on the A&A sheets so the officer could attend the conference whether the officer pays out of his pocket or if the officer requested to be reimburse by the city. We are only as good as our training.

Who cares if the are expert witnesses, they process scenes collect evidence and go to trial telling the truth and leaving it up to judge or jury.
