Forced Furlough Day #1

Today is the first of the forced furlough days being pushed upon non-emergency workers. Streets and San would appear to be the ones taking the brunt of the "layoffs" to save jobs and money.

One question though. We had our trash picked up Wednesday. We assume it was early because Thursday was the holiday and Friday was going to be a forced day off. All fine and dandy that the trash got removed - we're fine with once a week.

The trouble is, the truck was in the alley at 0630. Then it was covering the next block over around noon. Then we caught them in the next hood over at 1700. When we drove by the Ward yard, the trucks were still coming in after 1900 hours.

So if there is an actual forced furlough day that is supposed to be saving money, isn't it odd that the Ward yard was humming with activity well after 1800 hours the day prior? The overtime racked up prior to a holiday and "furlough" day must have been quite a total. Perhaps more than working an actual day might have totaled?

Why do we get the feeling there's more going on here than meets the eye?

Because there usually is more going on than meets the eye?

Keep in mind, they never rest, 'they' being the ones who are always hustling, always hungry for more, always anxious to suckle at the taxpayer financed tit.

It's like they substitute payola for sleep, nourishment, and aspiration.

Some garbage pick up will go on as normal Friday (mostly Downtown due to the parade). Those S&S workers will take their furlough day later on in the year.

The trucks coming out after 7 P.M. are a shuttle crew going to dump them.

On a week with a Holiday,S&S works four 10 hour days all at straight pay.

Listen to you guys, beefing on the garbage crews. There must be a laptop with a wireless connection at the 7/11 where you must conduct their roll calls, because thats where you are most of the time, trying to decide if they should wear a mask or not on the 1st and the 16th when you get paid.

Man, these garbage men are just lazy. You've seen them on the news. Alas most city workers are lazy. They all get high rates of pay. How about putting bids out there for privatizing the service? Hell, we could probably get rent-a-cops for about $17 an hour. To save more money cut half the aldermen, privatize all city service. Cut the jobs that do the same as the county. Do we really need 2 different water district groups? Cut the city's and have the county do it countywide.

The upaid furloughs hurts those other city workers who make less than the average copper. We don't have the best job, but we are lucky in many ways.

That's because the clout heavy departments and workers get as much OT as they want anyway, so they get to make up the lost day of pay... unlike all the non-clout people who never get overtime and can't get compensated.

Merry Christmas everyone! Some of you get a nice Christmas check, while others are put behind. Thanks Daley for setting the nepotism bar so high.

Some one has nothing more to do than watch grabage trucks. I am very impressed with the work that garbage men do picking up ALL garbage on the street. Just imagine if garbage crews enforced rules that only garbage in bins are to be picked up? Please get a life and be graetful you were not laid off. Many civilian employees at CPD were laid off today. In conclusion, STFU!!!

I live on a block with a T-Alley. My normal garbage day is on Mondays. Has been for 20 years. Now since the scandle and shake up with the garbage people slacking things are a little weird on the block. The garbage men come and pick up garbage only in the T section of the block but not the rest of the block. Then they return the next day on Tuesday to finish the same block. Sounds like they did some major shuffling of schedules to justify their existance. hmmm! has this happended to anybody else?

Our unit took up a collection for the civilian who had to take today off without pay. We know how much she does and she is valued. Well, she's valued by US, not by her employer.

How sick, that our 'mayor' will cut someone off at their financial knees in order to finance HIS grievous financial mismanagement.

I live in Norwood Park, I have been told my pick up is Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. Depending on how full the trucks are. They have picked up on Wednesday then skipped the next week leaving my garbage for almost two weeks. This is without a forced furlo. I got tired of trying to call the ward office before 1500, now I just call 311.

Hate to hurt your feelings my friend but none of us are rocket scientist. If we were we would not be police officers. Do not criticize about something you do not know about. If your so great why don't you go out and empty the cans and don't give me the bs that you have a college degree. You know as well as I do that college is over rated and just a cash cow for the wealthy share holders and arrogant liberal professors. Also, before you go off insulting me I have a masters degree from Depaul University. So, I do not want to hear you whiny bs about how dumb you think I am. Every one needs a job no matter how much education you have. People with attitudes like yours is part of the reason why the general public do not like the police. The transparency in other U.S. cities is not surprising to Adam Bellow, author of "In Praise of Nepotism: A Natural History," and son of author Saul Bellow.

"Chicago is the last bastion of the old nepotistic system," he said in an interview. "In Chicago, the old system still prevails, and it reminds us of how things really work in this society, despite the veneer of meritocracy.

"Chicago is the only place in the country where nepotism is practiced openly, and without shame or embarrassment."

Has anyone but me notices 20 yard dumpsters for leaves in their neighborhood?? I have 3 within about 2 blocks of my house. They used to just dump the leaves out of the street sweeper onto the street; usually on the back side of a park, then use a bobcat and put them in a truck. Now, someone has a contract to supply dumpsters for the leaves.

I thought the midget had no money.

7:11pm, if you have a Masters from DePaul, I want my money back. I agree with you, but check for spelling before you type. Someone with a Masters from DePaul would have.

By the way, I do not want to be a garbage man. They do make good money, but the job sucks. That's why the money is good. All that bullshit about the 2 hours of no productivity on the news....They have to drip off the garbage - not in the city---wait---unload---and then drive back. Then the driver gets a lunch. Keep bitching. Streets and San could make rotating labor crews, but that would fuck with everything and someone with some sort of time management skills would have to evaluate the entire system and deal with the union issues.
It should be that as soon as the drivers get a full load, another driver takes the work labor crew for another pick-up. It doesn't happen and logistically is difficult. It can be done, but won't be.

Just a different perspective.

Have dumpsters in my neighborhood (Portage Park) currently. In the past, have seen city dumptrucks sitting parked on street sweeping day waiting for the street sweeper to offload what it swept up.

I'm going to go ahead and whine about how dumb you are anyway. You first state that college is overrated (correct spelling, by the way) then you follow up by pointing out that you hold a degree from DePaul (correct word form, by the way) University. You must be kidding me about the spelling and the other stupid childish comments that people make on this blog. The setting does not require me to use spell check. This is a blog to get a point across not to be rated the best speller.

I commented on the thrashing of the garbage men. I think they do a great job. Why should we trash them on this blog considering we are all part of the city. The 5th floor shits on all of us not just the CPD. It is very annoying when all you small minded people can criticize about is if I spelled a word correctly.

Also, no I dont think I am overrated. I am just a man attempting to make an honest living.

The only reason I stated I have a degree was so I wouldn't hear the creeps begin to criticize and put down certain univerisities.

So go and tell me how dumb I am because I made some spelling errors on a cry baby blogspot.
