Shades of the Future
Maywood is doing what Shortshanks is doing, but on a grander scale:
The Village of Maywood increased the liquor license fee for liquor stores from $1,875 to $10,000 to pay for additional police presence around these establishments.
The Village Board voted 6-1 for the fee increase at the Nov. 18 Village Board meeting. Village Trustee Edwenna Perkins voted against the increase, calling it "unfair." The increase goes into effect next week and applies to seven stores.
"To me, you're hijacking (the business owners)," Perkins said.
Anyone want to take a bet that instead of Maywood reaping $70,000 in licensing fees, they lose the $13,125 they were getting in the first place? You'd have to weigh it against the alleged "extra" police presence at the liquor stores, but wouldn't a better purpose have been served by requiring the liquor stores to have on-site security? You'd have the $13,125 in license fees, you'd have part-time jobs for 14 or more people providing security and you'd have a business being a more responsible entity to the village.
Instead, all seven liquor stores will probably locate just outside Maywood's border, provide jobs and tax revenue to another taxing body and contribute nothing but seven more vacant lots to an already burgeoning number of such properties in Maywood.
Now apply that to Chicago and greater Cook County with recent sales tax hikes, property tax hikes and increased licensing fees. Goodbye tax base - hello bust out city.

OOOOOH NOOOOO!!!!!
Did you have to say that out loud so the troll mayor could hear ya? He doesn't need more ideas!
Hey! Thats it. Thats what he's starting to look like, hair all wild and clothes all frumpy! A Troll; A Troll; Shortshanks is the TROLL MAYOR!
Its a great idea. Chicago should do it too. We could raise money to hire more police. The CPD could use all the help it can get. Those type of establishments only breed crime anyway. People hanging out getting drunk in front of liquor stores have always been a problem and an eyesore for any neighborhood. Maybe Maywood is trying to clean up their act and bolster their Police Department if people want to keep screwing the streets up near these establishments. Good move.
Just curious, but isn't it unethical to take money/gifts for favors? So the politicans of Maywood are blackmailing the businesses in order to provide police presence? Only a matter of time before King Daly and his minions pounce on this idea. Keep voting DemocRATS, morons.
Just drive down Western Avenue heading south from anywhere on the southside and continue all the way through. It's a sin. I can't believe all those suburban mayors sold their own towns out like that. I wonder what they got.
Just like in the 80's when this dumb-fuck city taxed $.05 a gallon of gas before raising it to $.10 a gallon, thus sending all suburban bordering gas stations out of business. Guess what you assholes, instead of getting some tax from all of the stations...you are getting almost no tax from the few stations that are left. I haven't bought gas in this shithole city for over 20 yrs.
What do you expect from a town that names a recreation center and a street after their hometown hero and cop killer, "Fred Hampton."
OMG!
That would be a great idea!
I hate driving the speed limit over to Solid Gold Liquors (3821 W. Roosevelt) for yet another bullshit disturbance or bullshit battery IP!
Normally I would agree 100%. My only argument is who cares about the liquor stores in Maywood. I'm sure they are corner stores, and if they are anything like all the other liquor stores on the Westside, them leaving would be just fine. Ray Ray isn't going to walk that far to buy his 40oz. Besides, I'm sure those stores make enough money from constant selling of $.25 chips and beer they can pay the fee. Just please don't ever open one of those in my neighborhood. I'm all for government staying out of private business's way, but those corner liquor stores are something I wouuld never want near me.
Hello bust out city?
The city has been busted for years, but all the Lincoln Park yuppies and Norwood park homeowners have been living in a dream, and are partially responsible for it. Have fun paying for your million dollar homes when I'll be buying mine next door for 200k fools.
Govt corruption at work.

Maybe we can sell the rights to the cameras like we did with the downtown meters, COMISKEY park, the skyway, Daleys balls, etc.

Hey, now!
We may be on to something here! J-Fed sez we need to find new ways to fight crime. Why don't we auction off the rights AND use of the PODs to the gangs? We could then force them all to purchase PPLs (Personal Pod Licenses) like the Bears did at Soldier Field. Any new interest in buying a PPL by new gangs or gang members, would require a service fee to be put on the waiting list to purchase POD licenses, or the WLTPPL!
Of course, for recruiting purposes they will want to "advertise" in their competitors territory in order to attract more competant executives and so they could spray paint their gang logos and "want ads" on the light poles. We can get them bidding against each other and raising the bid amounts into the stratosphere. We'll soak up enough illegal drug money to balance the city budget, AND help keep the gangs in check.
They will also be stellar observers
of these cameras in order to keep their drug trade operating efficiently. They can protect their turf, identify their enemy gang members, strategize about marketing concepts, and testify in court, since they are probably more familiar with that, than half our sworn department!
They'll obviously be able to operate with impunity, since J-Fed is de-emphasizing drug enforcement. That, in turn, will free up more manpower for the new, yet to be formed, citywide ECF Unit, (Extra Cop Force), that can be deployed to any district in the city with a manpower shortage (say less than 3 cars working per watch). All this can be done without raising taxes!!!
Seriously, though;}
Since we need to save funds for the city, I propose that we not only roll back the alderscum's 6% raise, but also make their part-time jobs voluntary, as well! I'll voluteer, knowing there is a $1.3 million fund for each ward that does not have to be accounted for.
And, do I see any hands to volunteer for the office of the Mayor of Chicago? Just cutting out half the BS kickbacks and payoffs that this mayor is involved in and the US Attorney will be ecstatic and you'll still be a millionare.
I know I'm not the only one with great ideas for keeping this town solvent. Maybe more examples from the Blogosphere would be in order and a humorous thread to run for the holiday? HAVE A GOOD ONE!!!
It's the Cook County model. Thats what happens when you have people in charge that have no business being there in the first place. Thanks Stroger, inc.
I agree with you that they will probably leave and go just outside of town. But part of what you said didn't make it a good business decision. I would rather pay the $10,000 then hire my own security.
If I was open all day say 7am-11pm.
And I had 2 gaurds each work 8 hours, and payed each 100 a day. Then I would be spending $200 x's the number of days. Say I am closed Sundays and holidays. Then I am open about 300 days a yr x's 200 a day is $60,000 out of my pocket.
I would pay the extra $10k and just find a way to charged the mutts more to offset my fees
Raise all the liquor fees to close all liquor stores! Drinking is the downfall of us all!
God Bless Mayor Daley and Todd Stroger.
These men are only looking out for the greater good of all.
You do not understand or appreciate all the hard work and dedication that goes into their decisions.
Lets all give them a big.
Hip Hip Hooray; Hip Hip Hooray.
There now don't you all feel better?
"With All Our Rage; We Are Still Just Rats In A Cage"
Mayhood will just get people to sell liquor on the street corners. They will buy their goods like students buy the chips at Aldi and sell them in school for $1.

Did you miss your last AA meeting?
Maybe you should give your sponsor a call, sounds like you're facing another crisis moment.
Fucking great.
I live in Elmwood Park. Now I get MS13 and other shitstains of this state here.
Whilst we remain unarmed.
Goodbye tax base - hello bust out COUNTRY!
The Left is attempting to turn this whole country into a Maywood, IL.
"Whilst we remain unarmed.

You live in Elmwood Park and you say you're unarmed?
Surely you jest.
I can't believe that a progressive, sophisticated, transparently well-run & propsperous municipality like Maywood, IL would "cut off its nose to spite its face" by raising liquor license fees. Come on ... not Maywood!
Isis,
Surely you know buying liquor on the street and potato chips is ghetto. Perhaps, this is the whites' fault for leaving Maywood? :)
