Some Who Might Know

Regarding the bad wiring that seems to be occurring when non-union techs have been installing Automated Ticket Writers and shorting out the PDTs and other electrical systems. If they are who they say they are that is:
  • [question]Is this an electrical issue, or a union issue? Has the fuse been blown, which is an easy fix? If the circuitry has been fried, however, then you are screwed.

[answer] Well lets put it this way we have noticed these morons have connected the +12volts to the first live wire they find. This can include the computer, airbag system, etc. And we wonder why they go out and cause other problems with the vehicle

    Fleet tech
And where would the liability be when one of these airbags fails to deploy in a squad car accident? We're just wondering. Somebody really ought to find a few Personal Injury lawyers that we haven't marked for death and get them on retainer.

Regardless, WTF does it matter if it is a Union issue??? DO NOT GET ME WRONG! My father was fired from CFD twice because he stood true to the brotherhood of the barrel... But an install job on a external piece of hardware can be accomplished by any trained person. Union or not! Whoa... did I say trained... yep, I think I did. I put enough wig wags and the like into cars to realize what was right and wrong (I was in the military so don't go asking for my union card).

Unions did great things for this nation. AWESOME things like getting us honest wages and protection from our employers. Certain jobs still need union protection. But Unions also got us no consumer electronics produced in the US today. It also got us a Ford, GM, and a Boeing, that needs to be bailed out by the US Gov. Now I am not saying those corporations are not to blame, but christ! Enough of the union mantra!

Oh... I came home on leave one time. Mom's Zenith TV burned out (after 4 hard years). I went to Circuit City and bought her a Sony. Caught HOLY HELL from my "your father was in a union" sisters. Guess what. The TV still works after 13 years. Guess those non-union employees at Sony got lucky!

After being in dozens of squad cars, I think the GPS unit is worth more than the entire car itself. Man, I can't believe the condition of some of these wrecks that barely function on the street. Don't sweat the small stuff guys and don't be shocked if the car door falls off while getting out. (Just like the Victory Auto commercial)

It doesn't matter where the liability is in the event of some squad car mishap. If you are a sworn employee of the CPD you cannot sue your employee for injury, even if you can prove negligence. But don't take my word for it. That was inserted in state law quite a while ago. Ask a PI attorney. If we were able to do that don't you think the courts would be chock full of coppers suing the CPD?

They can be as negligent as they want with our safety. All we can do is to refuse to operate an unsafe vehicle and fill out a safety complaint. However those safety complaints are non binding in the event the city is found negligent. They should be therefore written on Charmin or Scot tissue so they can serve some good purpose.

I know for a fact that the union guys at 911 & 311 have to teach the non union tech dudes how to get the job done right on a daily basis...........learn as you go. It's called training a guy so he can then take your job.

Why don't the unions step in and resolve this problem. FOP and IBEW should step in and deliver the best for there dues paying members. Local 134 is a joke but they keep taking those monthly dues!

I'm just wondering if the "outside" tattoed people have to undergo any kind of screening process in order to work on police cars? Wouldn't it be best for the safety of police officers if ONLY CPD employees worked on their vehicles? Are they supervised? Do CPD supervisors have to sign off on their work? Don't the gangs infiltrate everything?

I'm just sayin'

Obviously in this case, bigkranium, the NON Union guys had no idea what they were doing. So the difference is this. Obviously, these non union assholes AREN'T trained and/or they are shitting it in - half assing it. That's why they claim they can do it so much faster than the Union guys. If the city did what they were supposed to do and used the LU 134 guys, it would be done right the first time, even if it took longer. Now they're going to have more problems (possibly serious if they're connecting to the airbag) and spend even more money to have this half assed instillation fixed. Good for them, they get what they deserve.

In order to apply for a job in fleet, you have to be a LU 134 member and have an FCC license. Wonder if "tattoo people" have an FCC license, god knows they don't have a card. What a joke!

typical of your generation, fuck everyone but me. The failure of these industries wouldn't have anything to do with profit, cheap parts, profit, shit products, profit, greedy ceo's, but it is easy to blame a production line worker who wants to make a fair wage to send his kids to school and have good benefits, retirement. and you know because police work so fucking hard for theur pay. how many hours are you actually head down working, go visit a factory some time moron, you complain about micro-managing, go to a production line where you are watched every minute of the day. how many times does your sgt ride with you and watch you. you are a spoiled puke, a product of a generation that busted their ass and stck together.

"This program provides youth with an opportunity to participate in organized sports to promote positive relationships with peers and mentors," Supt. Jody P. Weis said in a news release. "It teaches children to successfully achieve, while helping them stay in school and out of trouble with adult supervision and support."
************************************************
If participating in sports truly promotes positive relationships and successful achievement, then what the heck happened with all these sports "heros" that have fallen from grace??? Simpson, Bryant, Rose, Vick.... are just a very few that immediately come to mind. Better to pump this surplus cash into something that will REALLY make a difference in these kids lives in the long run. How about teaching "work ethics" and "social graces", such as learning how to EARN your own way and instilling in them a basic respect for human life? It never ceases to amaze me, how this society puts sports above everything else..... as if playing sports is the magical key to solving all of the problems in this country. These guys are all over glorified and WAY overpaid. These kids need to be taught a TRADE and how to survive in this life by being productive, caring members of society.
Now before all you sports enthusiast's begin bashing me, I do believe sports have a place in society... but not above everything else!! I really doubt many of these children will grow up to be sports legends, but they will need the skills to be successful and contributing members of society.

This city never does things "smart" or the way it should be done. They waste so much money it's amazing. From "clout" construction projects, roads, street lights, vehicles(GPS) etc. and even the speed bumps that they put in and then paid someone to remove and replace again. The only purpose for GPS is to monitor us it has nothing to do with safety. I know, many departments had GPS for a long time and that's fine, but if they're going to give us GPS could they at least do it right like the other depts? In the mean time how about giving us something simple LIKE FUCKING PDT's!!!!

If anyone in CPD fleet management had any balls, they would demand that these jagoffs (tattoo boys) be called in to work with the fleet guys when a vehicle that their tattoo crew worked on comes in because it is fucked up. Have these jagoffs stand there and stutter and stammer when fleet is trying to figure out what the fuck they did. If they are anything like stereo installers, they jerry rig everything. They use the first hot wire they find.

So. IL. Reader,

The issue I have is when we are looked at and behave like a social service agency. The only social service we are pretty good at, is the enforcement of law.

Historically there have been many such sports programs but all of them have fallen short of their high minded goals. This is just a feel good, pat ourselves on the back measure to show we have a heart. If you really want to have an impact socially, hire more coppers and give them the tools be be effective professional officers.

Our interaction with the public has an effect on them, either positive or negative. To have us try and undo years of inept parenting skills and instill our ethic on a kid who may show up only 25% of the time is ludicrous.

Why waste department funds when they can be used for to get us working equipment. Under this administration, that's kind of like asking for a fair contract. It's just not going to happen.

You generally cannot sue your employer at all for workplace injuries. Thats what the W/C system is for.

However, you could potentially sue someone who is not your employer, such as an outside contractor that installed something wrong that led to an injury.

this dept sucks. file a grievance or right up a ticket for a safety issue on your car and then your labeled an asshole by your immediate boss for being a trouble maker. if you do it a couple times then they fuck with your start time, split your partner up and deny any time off.

this dept needs to come up with somekind of anonymous complaint/bitch box in every district that the commander only has access to. then he needs to address the problems so his troops are safe and have proper equipment and everybody under his command is somewhat copasetic. yeah yeah, i know, i'm dreamning.
