Tipping Point is Here

  • During the presidential election campaign many were dumbfounded upon hearing for the first time that at least a third of Americans pay no income taxes whatsoever. The Tax Foundation notes that in 2006, 45.6 million filers (33%) paid no income tax whatsoever. Under current law, in 2009 47 million filers—representing approximately 96 million individuals— will pay no income tax.

    The Foundation maintains that under Obama's tax plan 63 million filers— representing 44% of all returns— will pay no income tax. In contrast, in 1985, just 16.5% of filers paid no income tax.

    It appears Obama wasn't kidding about redistributing the wealth, although he appears to be somewhat late to the game.
Forty-four percent of Americans paying no income tax? Where's their stake in the country? Where's their skin in the game? Why are we working our asses off every year to support almost half the country? Maybe only people doing the handing out ought to be allowed to vote.

At some point (and seeing all the money fleeing Wall Street right now, that point might be now) the people who can afford to are just going to stop working, stop investing, stop creating jobs and just ride this out.

Good Blog Post SCC. That's what I'm talking about. I've been saying it for years. Chicago is fucked because it caters to way way too many non tax paying lazy system abusing loafers.

I work as the police, go to court, work special and work 2 side jobs just to send my kids to a good school and put an average roof over our heads. I've been working since the age of 14 part time, then 2 part time jobs at 16 and 17 years old, then a full time job and a part time job at 17-19 then I became a cop at 22 years old. Work work work. The American way but this country is falling apart from the inside out and now we're really fucked because dumb ass Obama wants to cater to the loafers even more.

It would be more interesting to know:

1. the breakdown, according to yearly, taxable income, of those who don't pay federal income tax

2. the actual amounts of taxes not being paid, categorized per yearly income

3. the reasons each non-tax paying filer used to achieve a zero federal tax liability

4. the number of non-federal tax payers that are not individual, living human beings, but, rather, legal entities

5. the total amount of federal benefits, being paid for by federal taxes, divided into those monies being paid to a) individual, living human beings, b) private sector legal entities and c) public sector legal entities

6. the total amounts of federal benefits, being paid for by federal taxes, categorized by the criteria and federal programs dispensing same

7. the base standards by which federal tax liability is calculated and the deviations from said standards by which the above, non-tax paying individuals, both living human beings and legal entities, private sector and public sector, are not required to meet those base standards of federal tax liability

Keeping in mind that both of the following are true:

The devil is in the details.

and

When complexities are simplified, specificity, and, thus, complete truth, is lost.

Funny that I read this post after I just got done bitching on my blog about how much I dislike my job, but despite it all, I'm thankful to have one given the way the economy is.

And I hate feeling like I'm being raped every week when I check my pay stub online, knowing my government is just giving it away to someone that could be out there working but are just too damned lazy and would rather wait for the handout. Bastards.

Nice post, SCC.

As one who did stupid things...at least in this bizarro-world...such as sacrifice and work summers and nights to put myself through school, buy a house I can actually afford, not bury myself in huge car payments or debt I can't pay, take care of my kids needs, all these silly middle class values, I am sick and tired of this shit.

I was a middle of the road guy, I supported liberal social policies, but I am done with this shit. I refuse to be punished for being responsible, following the law, having values, any longer. Tipping point...yeah, I tipped.

Warren Buffet has stated that he pays less taxes than his secretary, yet he's a billionaire. How can that be?

For starters, because the rich are given so many opportunities to write off taxes that it is the rest of us that end up making up the difference.

After 8 years of Republicans running the White House, it's not surprising that the millionares have obtained even more ways to pay NO taxes.

I know your goal here is to:

1) get everyone all crazy and swearing at each other;

2) get people calling welfare people all kinds of MF's;

3) stir up the racists into calling President-Elect Obama all sorts of names;

4) have people tell us how THEY KNOW how the next administration will ruin the country;

5) rant on about the lack of a flag lapel pin;

6) and generally disagree as to Obama's politics, ie. communist, socialist, marxist, chauvanist, pugilist, numismatist etc, etc.

It's about time, however, that the ultra-rich 2% at the top of the food chain start paying some taxes instead of dodging them through all sorts of loopholes that are not available to the rest of the schmucks. And yes, it's also time for reform of all of the wefare and disability programs as well. Too many people are getting away scott-free in this country and if it doesn't get corrected pretty quick, we're all in trouble!!!!

Oh, and Daley sucks yak penis!

If you haven't read Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand, now would be a good time. It was written in the late 1930's before she moved to an apartment near Kedzie and Eastwood. She described what our country is going through now, but she called it 70 years ago. Don't let the 50 page monologue stop you from reading the rest of the book. In-freakin-credible isn’t it!? Not only do they not pay taxes, the “chosen one” wants to give them a tax handout too. Pay no taxes and then get an additional handout from those of us who do (Pay taxes). Sheesh. There’s a real incentive to work.

'About the time our original thirteen states adopted their new constitution in 1787, Alexander Tyler, a Scottish history professor at the University of Edinburgh, had this to say about the fall of the Athenian Republic some 2,000 years earlier:

A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government.

A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury.

From that moment on, the majority always vote for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.

The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history, has been about 200 years.

During those 200 years, those nations always progressed through the following sequence:

1. From bondage to spiritual faith
2. From spiritual faith to great courage
3. From courage to liberty
4. From liberty to abundance
5. From abundance to complacency
6. From complacency to apathy
7. From apathy to dependence
8. From dependence back into bondage'

(found entry awhile ago on your blog)
Bar Stool Economics
Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:
The first four men(the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7.
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man(the richest)would pay $59.
So, that's what they decided to do The ten men drank in the bar every
day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them curve. 'Since you are all such good customers, he said, 'I'm going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20. Drinks for the ten now cost just $80. The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men-the paying customers? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get
his'fair share?'
They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they
subtracted that from everybody's share,then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer. So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.
And so:
The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing(100%savings).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3(33%savings).
The seventh now paid $5 instead of $7(28%savings).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).
Each of the six was better off than before And the first four continued to drink for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings. 'I only got a dollar out of the $20', declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man,' but he got $10!'
'Yeah, that's right', exclaimed the fifth man. 'I only saved a dollar,too. It's unfair that he got ten times more than I!'
'That's true!!' shouted the seventh man. 'Why should he get $10 back when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks!'
'Wait a minute,' yelled the first four men in unison. 'We didn't get
anything at all. The system exploits the poor!'
The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.
The next night the tenth man didn't show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn't have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!

And that, boys and girls, journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most
benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

Looking up recent figures, the UK's unemployment rate is 5.7%, France's is 7.2%, Germany's is 7.4%.

The US unemployment rate spiked to 6.1% in August.

More troubling is looking at the US U6 unemployment rate, which includes the unemployed and actively looking for work, the marginally attached (those who've given up for the time being), and those employed part time for economic reasons (not particularly uncommon for post college grads). Add all these up, and total was 11% of the workforce in September, the highest since 1994, and higher than in the recession of 2001.

It might make us Americans feel better to think that our unemployment rate is lower than in European countries (even if it's the about the same in the UK), but for all our lack of entrepreneurial crushing socialist policies, we're not doing any better.
