- OFF TOPIC! BUT IMPORTANT! Everyone is being trained to use the digital cameras now for "search warrants". But J-Fed and the Think Tank are writing a policy now for its real use : All Desk Sgts will photograph arrestees immediately when they are brought into district stations. Thus, they will have pre-detention photos of prisoners to cross reference with lockup photo and any new marks incurred during arrest procedures. This guy is not our friend, be careful.
Ok, anyone here ever had to drag an offender escort a non-compliant citizen into the lockup because they are spitting and screaming and causing all sorts of havoc in the hallways and processing rooms? Anyone think he's going to sit for photos? Or some truly spectacular bruises aren't going to show up in an hour or two or three? Medical fact that they don't show up for hours sometimes. And how many times have we heard about the upstanding altar boy heading to the lawyer's office and the lawyer's people taking photos two and three days later of alleged handcuff marks that are mysteriously still freshly raw?
Dumb idea that is going to screw somebody. Badly. Someone ought to photographing these mutts AFTER they leave CPD custody, either by I-Bond or before they get on the bus to County.

If this kind of stuff is implemented in Chicago, watch for Da Mare to tell his buddy Obama, who will then make this proceedure a federal law.

I don't see anything wrong at all with photographing detained persons when they come into police custody. Pictures when they leave are a good idea too, maybe even more important for protecting cops from unwarranted charges. Instead of just bitching about it on the Internet, perhaps someone should write a polite request to the boss man and suggest it.
Of course the "detained person" no doubt incurred injuries when he, imagine this, ran from the police and had to be tackled and handcuffed. (Not that a POS would EVER run from an officer!) The problem is, actual bruises won't show up for a few hours, until after he's photographed. So the photos show him pristine as a baby's bottom, while he's in lockup the bruises start to form the injuries sustained when he running, and when he's released it's OH NOES!!!11!! The thought of slowing down and protecting one's carreer and income is the prudent thing to do, but what about the urge to get the bad guy and make your Boss look good even in Gloomy times (especially when your Boss is a Prince)? The key point everyone is missing is the desk sgt is going to be doing it. I personally know a few who like to sleep and take lunches and dissapear, and they are always making you wait and complaining. Imagine coming in with an arrestee at 2140 hrs. Third watch sgt. Will be ready to leave , so you have to wait till the 1st watch to come in and get settled with their que and coffe orders. By the time the pic gets taken it will be 2040 hrs. Just wait. And by the way, if you ever had an arrestee slam his head off of a wall and get some sort of injury and you didn't document it, you're the moron. Because you had just allowed yourself to be set up for that BS lawsuit and you failed to show the courts and possibly your jury what a moron the arrestee truly is.
Who is this captain on the 3rd watch in 020? Nice attitude, wow!

Listen to the stories of others that have been jamed and are fired or sitting at call back. I will not write it here for the public to see, and anyone else that might know the answer should not publish it either, but if the lockup keeper is competent and the desk sergeant or wc knows his/her shit, there is a way to legally thwart these pieces of shit when they intentionally harm themselves in the lockup, however, good luck with finding competency, institutional knowledge or, for that matter, just plain old knowledge. Knowing what to do, saved me, and others, from a ton of hurt.

Yeah. I volunteer J-FED, Ted O'Keefe, Pete Brust, Mike Masters, and the Think Tank, and with a little luck, they will all stay in D.C. and not come back here.

at the end of the day when someone complains that the police did something to them it comes down to your word against theirs. who do you believe, the asshole with a 5 page rap sheet or the decorated veteran officer. the last few trips down to ops/ipra have left me wondering, which is why my spurs are hung up. i go to work and try to be positive but lingering in the back of your head is that bad feeling that the shit will hit the fan on one of your jobs and you will be called to task. take it from someone who has done alot on this job and been in alot of trouble on this job-- it is just not worth the risk anymore.
Maybe JFed can come to my car and get a photo of me playing PSP while waiting for my next call. I plan on PROACTIVELY finishing Grand Theft Auto Vice City Stories over the next month! I also plan on catching up on all seasons of The Wire this winter!

Better Yet: Let the Responding Officer take a photo of the "Alleged Offender" at the scene. Mail it to his honor, what a copy of the appropriate case report, and ask him how to proceed.
SCC-you are 100 % percent correct in mentioning that a photo(s) or a video be taken prior to hitting the lock up and signing the I bond at the desk. Personally, I vote for the video.

I don't understand what all of the whining is all about! If you as a PO follow all directives, rules, regulations and general orders of this department you will be fine. Be a dumb ass and think you can do whatever you want to because you have a star on your chest, then you are toast and you deserve to lose your job. It's amazing that I work with some PO's and they still believe in "creative writing". Are they stupid or what? And then when they get caught they will blame it all on this department and not on themselves. This department needs a good house cleaning. Why doesn't the think tank come up with cameras that we can strap to our heads, with a remote that we can hook to our wrist? Then every five minutes we can click the remote and take a photo from the minute we arrive on scene, to putting the cuffs on, to getting in the car, a few shots during the drive to the station, getting out of the car, and finally taking a photo of me passing the offender to the sgt.
PLUS -- have the lock up crew strapped with head gear cameras and they can take as many photos as they want during the offender's stay in lock up all the way until he leaves.
It can be like reality tv!!!
