My deepest condolences to his family.

Can't ever remember a time like this when it seems like every month we're burying one of our own. This is really sad.
It's getting worse out there too. No one has any regard for the police any more. So please stop sticking your necks out for a city and its citizens that don't appreciate it.

Daley was there. I'm not ringing his bell. I just want you to look in the mirror this morning and ask yourself "What was so important that I couldn't go?"

One of the hardest days of my career. Godspeed, Joe.

Sincere thanks to the many suburban departments who were kind enough to attend.

Joe will be missed but his passing is a relief to his family and his friends.

As for those bashing the FBI, I believe they should refrain. Lenny Bajenski has the right to say if they did anything inappropriate and he has not been critical.Lenny was Joe's partner in Prostitution and then Narcotics and responded to the scene on Wabash Avenue immediately after the shooting. Lenny and Popo were the only ones to visit Joe month after month for 7+ years and if they thought the FBI were out of bounds they would be the first to say so!

Anyone who knows Lenny knows he does not hold back his thoughts.

I am just happy you are no longer suffering physically and mentally. I am happy your family can finally start to heal and stop having to watch you and your spirit pass on each day. I am happy I got the chance to know you and your family and to truly remember your voice and smile. I wish I could fit those Bachrach suit jackets!

I am happy that people like Terry Hillard, Phillip Cline, Dana Starks, Walter Green, Det. Victoria Green, Det. Maverick Porter, Det T Bone Brown and the Area Two Detective Division put out extra efforts and a hand to the family consistently over the last 7 years.

I am sorry to say that the new powers at be had no idea what to do to address you and your family. I must recognize the effort I guess, but this really kills my spirit and makes me pray even harder for a brighter day for our great city and a department that I love!

Joe was a tough guy guy and a compassionate guy. I tried a murder case that Joe and his partner were the lead detectives. A real pro and a real class guy. God bless you Joe, rest easy.

A 26th street ASA.

Rest in Peace Joe.
I had the honor to check on him on a near daily basis at Northwestern Hosp. and speak with his family.
What a class act throughout it all.
You will continue to be in our thoughts and prayers, brother.

Hillard, Cline, Starks and Green should not receive any credit for anything!

They were seldom if ever seen at 83rd & Dante.

The individuals who visited month after month for 7 years were Lenny, Popo, Lorenzo, Frank and Mike H. They held Joe's hand and talked to him and they deserve the credit and no one else.

WE REALLY HAVE TO SHOW MORE SUPPORT IN GENERAL. FROM BENEFITS TO WAKES TO FUNERALS PUT ASIDE SOME FEW EXTRA MINUTES EVEN IF YOU HAVE TO BRING YOUR KIDS ( AS WE ARE A POLICE FAMILY) AND ATTEND. NO ONE IS ASKING YOU TO EMPTY YOUR BANK ACCOUNT OR GIVE YOUR RIGHT ARM, " JUST ATTEND" THE FIREMEN SEEM TO BE ABLE TO DO IT SO SHOULD WE.

If you would like to add those names to the list, then that is fine, but please don't put down people that YOU were just not aware of their part. Just because you said it, does not make it the gospel. I am speaking on what I personally know.

Were you aware of the fight the family had with the city day in and day out, especially the Christmas debacle? No, you have no idea. You don't know how many times they went to court or sent someone to court to assist the family on issues other than Sally. I bet you were not even aware of what else this family has endured.

Were you aware of all the officers they had on call to assist for the last 7 years. I bet you were not aware that finally the feds ended up taking over financial responsibility due to the efforts of the aforementioned bosses who helped push, inspite being told to lay off. That is not a CPD decision, but a City decision. They stood up and joined them in the fight.

Even before this incident, 2 of the three were personal friends of his that helped him attain many of his career goals. He loved them dearly and so does the family.

Please don't use this venue as a bashing session. Just add those who also assisted, say a prayer to protect our sisters and brothers in blue, that we will not have to endure anything as this and move on.

It was noted by someone at the wake that some of the officers there to pay their respects were not even on the job when he was shot...but they get it.

I close my eys and still see Joe Airhart, being himself, exhibiting his gift of gab, inncocently "flirting" with the cute nurses at Cook County Hospital (pre-Stroger Hospital days) while investigating the caper of some injured or dead s**thead. Miss you, my brother. You were (and somewhere still are) real police.
