Disaster Looms

  • Mayor Daley said Wednesday he’s been warned by a parade of corporate CEOs that a blizzard of job cuts are about to bury the souring Chicago economy.

“Huge layoffs are coming in November and December. And next year, there’s going to be [even more] huge layoffs. All the corporation CEOs have come in to tell me. That’s just the beginning. It’s not their end result,” Daley told reporters after a City Council meeting.

So Daley's "head tax" is going to take a massive hit. Anyone who has the City Budget and can look up what the "projected" take was supposed to be for this line item. Seems that projection is going to be more than a little over-estimated at this point.

Then wait till Obamas new tax program hits...

Can you say DEPRESSION?

I predict Lay-offs coming to the CPD. I hate to admit it, but everything will be handled by Unit 376. Cars will only respond to bona-fide in progress calls. Phony man with a gun and drug calls will be greeted with arrests for false official reports.

Tax revenues will continue to decline as living in Chicago will become more and more expensive.

Daley needs to learn that he CANNOT tax Chicago into prosperity.

“Everybody’s in the same boat in this economy. No one is outside the boat — except the federal government. There’s no layoffs in the federal government. They print money.”

We have been hearing this sort of thing from the moment this horrible, twisted, disgusting little man took office. It's simply the politics of resentment. Always stand pointing accusingly at "people with money" as if you weren't one of the biggest sons-of-bitches there is.

"Lots of money. I mean, heh heh, big money here. There's lots, lots, lots of money in this. Lots. Heh." gushes Mayor Porky The Pig.

Only one note on this piano -- the tune is called "Friend Of The Working Man," and it's repeated over and over again as the Working Man's taxes go up and services are curtailed and the city is leased off piecemeal like a crackhead pawning Grandma's 12" black-and-white for another rock.

Since I'm not a Chicago reporter terrified of getting thrown off the "A" list for the Mayor's press conferences -- how big does a race riot have to get before they'll pre-empt restaurant reviews to air it? -- I will take this opportunity to point out what's been embarrassingly obvious to everyone else for years.

The emperor has no clothes.

Mayor Daley appears -- in word, in action, and in demeanor -- to be clinically insane. Jerking, sweating, babbling -- what in the hell is he jacked up on?

Is there a doctor in the house?

Save the city -- someone tell the truth!

If a black/African(what?)American can be Pres, obviously there is no more discrimination.

Obviously he has/had a fair shot.

Blacks are no longer cheated if the greatest thing u can achieve, as an American, is President.

WAKE UP. With lowered tax revenues, all city salary expectations should be lowered as well.

More and more cities are looking at salary cuts, NOT salary increases. Welcome to the economy.

The brain trust that you have in both the city and county never figure that revenues could go down, they just spend, spend spend and tax,tax tax.

The Cook County sales tax decision (10.25%)is starting to show how dumb a decision it was - less revenues, more shortfalls. You all admit driving to somewhere else to buy stuff, so it should be no surprise.

Go to Kenosha and see all the Illinois plates and Chicago stickers buying everything at Prime Outlets. (5% sales tax)

With less people working, guess what? Hate to say it but, be lucky you have a good job with benefits.

Government workers seem to think they are somehow insulated from a bad economy. Guess again.

Chicago has never recovered since 9/11 with companies that have cut back, moved, been acquired or stopped functioning completely.

All of it is finally surfacing. Companies are not only laying off people - they are cutting out all meetings, conferences, Christmas parties, and everything else.

That's less money spent downtown. Less parking (which your lot prices are ridiculous), less hotel tax, less restaurant tax, less taxi usage, etc.

I won't be coming downtown for any Christmas shopping or some overpriced dinner and drinks. Your parking fees are insane and so is your sales tax.

All that money saved, I can actually buy a couple more presents (in Kenosha of course)and refuel up there too for about 30-40 cents a gallon cheaper.

Hope Obama throws Chicago some bones - it needs every one.

Daley can wipe his ass with any revenue projections previous to September 2008.

Universally, income of any kind is going to be down and down significantly.

A competent Mayor would immediately start to RESPONSIBLY cut EVERY expenditure and cut back on labor save for true essentials, and he would torque up accountability regardless of the fact that in the short-term it will enhance hardships individually on all and politically on him but in the long run, it will speed up the recovery.

Such a Mayor would do the "heavy lifting" that is necessary.

If Daley thinks President-elect Obama is going to save his ass by sending him money, he's delusional. By the time President-elect Obama is President Obama there ain't going to be any bailout money left because the Washington jackals will have given it to their cronies with no transparency of who got what for what afforded to the taxpayers.

Daley has had 18 years of pissing with the wind at his back. Now he's going to deal with pissing into the wind.

And the rest of us? We're going to go in this as tight-ends and come out of it as wide-recievers.

I AM ABOUT TO RETIRE AND I AM SCARED.

I wish that I had moved all my retirement funds over to conservative investments before the Democratic Congress had time to fuck everything up and make the Dow go from 14k to 9 or even 8k.

With the Dems in charge of everything and going to redistribute the wealth I know whose wealth they are going to redistribute.

The Obamament will cut our defenses and intelligence networks and be shocked when Americans die when we are attacked.

And when Obama says that his new tax plan will only soak the rich he means everyone that really earns a paycheck or earned a pension.

The corporate CEOs will hide their wealth offshore; their multi-million dollar bonus will be paid into Cayman Islands banks. The poor and the illegals will get their bread and circuses at our expense. The earners will be taxed, and taxed AND TAXED MORE.

And when the Obamament thinks they can no longer raise taxes and have to bail out more corporations and fund more pork, for "social programs", for Olympics, for flower pots, they will run the printing presses overtime just like Jimmie carter did. That will create INFLATION, the cruelest tax of them all. Everything we worked for will be eaten up, and for what.

Thank-you Democrats.

"Am I wrong, and if so why?

11/13/2008 04:40:00 AM"

Yes, you are wrong and here's why:

1. The 'greatest thing' an American can achieve is NOT 'becoming the President of the United States of America'.

2. The 'greatest thing' an American can achieve IS to be an honest, honorable, good-hearted, hard-working, salt-of-the-earth human being, fully aware that inevitable death follows, in due course of time, birth into this world, and, that, being born into this world is as much of a duty as a gift.

3. The 'greatest thing' an American can achieve is the realization that, in spite of observing the many who choose to piss away their gift of life, (by living as if they will never die, by using their relative freedoms to pursue the acquisition of things that will inevitably be taken from them, that, in fact, they never really owned, but were merely temporarily 'in possession of', by ignoring the inevitability of certain death, and, in so doing, reject honesty, honor, authentic work and, instead, embrace the 'ethic' of 'do unto others before others can do unto you', rather than the true, salt-of-the-earth ethic of 'do unto others as you would have others do unto you', by behaving as if the world was created solely for their own, personal pursuit of pleasure, at any cost to others), that there is a purpose in birth leading to inevitable death and that knowing and understanding that purpose is the 'greatest thing' that a human being, American or not, can seek to achieve.

When a greater number of Americans are human beings who no longer will tolerate, embrace or allow a lessor number of Americans to seduce that greater number into believing that greed is their god, that 'by hook or by crook' is their credo, and that the temporary pleasures of the flesh are to be more highly valued than the costs to others that the acquiring of those temporary pleasures imposes upon those others, then, and only then, will any American have the satisfaction of knowing that they have achieved the highest goal of any true American.

We, as Americans, and as human beings, are only as good as our deeds prove us to be.

How far is it now, DOW down 1600 plus points since the socialist was elected.

Ill. State House just OK'd the use of hearsay evidence. This was sought only to seek charges against Drew Peterson for murder of Savio, the previous wife. The missing wife supposedly said that Peterson killed the first (bathtub) wife. I wonder is this new rule just for prosecution of coppers or just for Peterson or what.

To the young, dumb college boy and girl police that just came on the job with in the last 15 years. Most of you have not had proper training at investigations, most of you will blindly do what the boss wants. I've seen newer partolmen go nuts and run to a watch commander when they were confronted with the truth on how they fucked up an investigation. They blame everyone but them selves, just the way their political daddy or uncle taught them, to be liars. If you think this hearsay rule is a great tool for prosecuting criminals, think twice and be careful what you wish for. You too can be sandbagged by the SAO and I've seen it done by young and ambitsous along with young stupid coppers. These people are big as scam artist as the shyster lawyers.

off topic, i was driving one day when i was stopped by 2 9th district officers. after they found i was a fellow PO they still ran my name and gave me the worst treatment ever. i have been stopped in 22 08 evergreen, burbank, oaklawn, bridgeview, bedford park, orland park, even Mchenry county and state police each time by an officer that was a different race than me and was treated with much more respect then by two ofc's of the same race. next time it maybe u stopped be me. we have enough people treating us like shit now im getting it from my fellow officers.DAMN.

To be perfectly honest with you Officer, it sounds like you drive like a complete idiot. Remember, just because you have a star in your pocket that does not give you the right to drive like a moron through any jurisdiction.
My advice to you....slow down, stop at stop signs and red lights, and just be thankful that you have not received any tickets as the normal civilians would.
And yes, I am a fellow PO with 3 bars on my sleeve.

What a wonderful man, He is so sensitive to our feelings. Just one question kind mayor? What have you done in your entire,"Public Service Career"?, to for see, and stop something like this from occurring?
I know there are too many guns, and that's the problem.
Let's all do our part to bring that message to our communities.
That will solve all our problems.

I don't know who you are or who the 9th district police that stopped you were, BUT i have stopped PO's active and retired that were the absolute biggest jagoffs i've almost ever encountered. They treated me like a piece of shit asking why the f*ck did i stop them, etc.. I swear, i almost wrote one of them a ticket. He deserved it so bad. But i just couldn't get myself to write another po, even after he was a complete ass to me. I just couldn't do it. So maybe YOU are the problem. Maybe you don't know how to be polite and non condescending toward your coworkers.

I also agree that if you're polite and show your star and ID and its verified you're a PO, that's it. End of story. Send you on your way. We don't need to lecture each other and give them any lip service at all. There is no need for that. There is a f/2 in 009 that loves to do that and it was so embarresing being her partner when she's telling a fellow PO that he needs to slow down etc.. So maybe you just got that one PO that doesn't "get it" yet, or never will.
But you know what i do to totally avoid situations like that... Don't drive like and asshole!!!!!

Terrance Boykin of the 1200 block of South State Street was indicted in September by a federal grand jury on one count of felony bank robbery and one count of felony violation of federal firearms statutes in connection with the Jan. 4, 2007, robbery of a Chase Bank branch, the FBI and Chicago Police Department said.

If I may share a story---
Recently moved out of Chicago, Lived in Hermosa, 25, things got pretty bad for me there. Audios Chicago.
When my father died 10 years ago, I inherited a nice SW 357, Long barrell. I couldn't register it, so I gave it to my cousin who lives in wisco.
I move, he gives it back. He's a trucker so we meet at an Oasis and I put the gun, in its case, with a trigger lock in the back of the SUV and am going home. No ammmo.
About 2 miles from my new house, in a small town in Lake County, I get pulled over for speeding, 10 over in a 35.
P/O is stern, but professional. I have my interior lights on, and my hands on the steering wheel. He goes through a few what I guess are standard questions, where you going ? Drinking ? nope, Do you have any weapons in the car ? Now I really get freaking nervous and hesitate, cause I've never had a gun, let alone in the car, and I just got my FOI card, so I don't lie, "Yes, I have a gun". and I add really fast, "in the back, in a case, unloaded," He asks quickly: "why do you have a gun ?" "I just moved up here from Chicago, it was my Dad's gun, but I couldn't register it, so my cousin had it and I just met him as he was passing through Illinois to get it back from him." "FOI card?', "Yes, sir" "Slow down through town OK?" "Yes sir," He gives me back my license, no ticket, and adds, "It sucks that where you needed it the most, you couldn't have it, and up here where you're never going to need it, hopefully, you can have a gun."
I say back,"maybe the fact that I can have it up here is part of the reason why I don't need it" We both agree, but then he jokes which I thought was really funny: "yeh but alot of people from Chicago are moving up here, so you probably will need it someday,"
One other thought: I will take my six figure a year deskjob anyday compared to you guys, in the best of circumstances, you couldn't pay me enough to do it. Let alone today, in Chicago, under the circumstances I keep reading about.

Shmooze the public with constant waisted ridiculous spending instead of spending mending on public safety and road safety. he'll use all this bullshit of a recession to not give the police a decent contract which is 18 months behind mind you. Mayor, what was the excuse for the last 20 years giving the police a table scrape raise which was always a year or two late mind you? Daley hates the police and is a crook. Plain and simple!

Prison term for one-time Chicago police officer

RACINE, Wis. -- A one-time Chicago police officer has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for stabbing a woman while robbing a Racine store.
Fifty-year-old Michael Ellis of Racine also received a seven-year term, to be served concurrently, for robbing a woman of $200 the day before the store robbery last April.
Ellis pleaded no contest earlier this year to charges of armed robbery by use of force and strong-armed robbery in the two crimes.
Authorities say he stabbed a clerk at the Family Dollar store after demanding she open the money drawer. Officers found him hiding under a parked van.

He's apparently grown weary of reviewing and purging the morons who post in droves to the newspaper's on-line site, so he shut off the comments. Just check out comments on some of the stories SCC has bandied and it's scary how many imbeciles are out there.

Now that Obama is Pres.... Does this mean affirmitive action is over?

If a black/African(what?)American can be Pres, obviously there is no more discrimination.

Obviously he has/had a fair shot.

Blacks are no longer cheated if the greatest thing u can achieve, as an American, is President.

Am I wrong, and if so why?
***********************************
I've got a question for you, based on your post. If Obama won because he was the most qualified, and not because of affirmative action, does this mean that everytime you (or those like "you", and you know what "you" are, you ungrateful white male)don't get that job, promotion, or that special assignment because some minority ("black person" or white female)got it instead, you can no longer blame it on "Affirmative action"? If you want to read about our collective future, go read the "Peak Oil" blogs, or go read James Kunstler's blog-site.

Folks, what we're facing is far beyond the impact and creation of Daley/Stroger local mis-rule. Life as we know it will quickly change, and the pleasurable middle-class lifestyle may disappear altogether - with most of us retreating back to our working-class (read: working poor) roots. Anyone read any Barbara Ehrenreich (Nickel and Dimed, This Land is Their Land, etc.) about the real American economic decline? Our wages have stagnated for a decade, even as the top 1% earners have quadrupled their annual incomes.

You can bash Obama all you want, but McCain/Palin ticket certainly wasn't concerned with "Joe the Plumber" more than a tag-line for a campaign. What McCain may have once represented certainly wasn't present in this empty-headed campaign. America's only hope is New Deal type major changes in federal attention and governmental spending; get out of Iraq, and focus on infrastructure rebuilding, health care cost reduction, jobs creation, etc. Perhaps Obama has willpower to break out of the politician mold, and affect change; otherwise, America will face hardtimes for at least five to seven years, if not longer. Wait for the lines at the food banks, at the shelters, and at the thrift stores...

We really are headed into uncharted waters. During the last Depression the police were given IOU's in lieu of pay, and that worthless script was never redeemed. This is part of the reason for the street graft of yester year, there was the tacit understanding that officers will "make it up on the streets".
That conduct will now get you fired, as it should! BUT, this also means the city has keep its end of the deal.
The orgy of promoting hacks and paying them the big bucks is bleeding this city dry. Obama will undoubtedly dump money into Chicago to make things "appear" nice to get the Olympics, but after 2016 all bets are off.
read Paul Craig Roberts, Ron Paul, Laffer or any one of a hundreds of real economic experts and the future looks disturbing at best.

Fellow officers, get out of debt. Conserve cash. Buy gold. Get and stay healthy. Prepare for your own future/retirement.
Expect this city to default!

Maybe, just maybe, they were a little pissed that you drive like an a**hole. Stops in 11 different parts of the state/county/city is nothing to brag about, dumb a$#! Just like the guy that's stopped in the ghetto that has the music blaring and expired temp tag wonders why you picking on him and locking him up for 'just a little weed, office'.

"star power" is a beeyotch, huh?

Why is it that listening to the gloom & doom reports coming out of Shortshanks office, and notices of "furlo days s/o pay", voluntary give-backs and rumors of lay offs, I havne't heard a peep about da mayor and the aldercreatures mention "giving back" some of their salaries, office expenses, and the million or so they get for a slush fund? I may have missed it, but I don't believe they've mentioned that yet. I guess everybody else is supposed to do their part, but the mayor, the city council, and all the bureau chiefs are exempted from that studd. Let the guy on the street give back though.

Cmon SCC. You cant possibly believe shortshanks!

If any CEOs came into to talk to shortshanks, it surely wasnt to warn about massive layoffs (nice scare tactic during contract negotiation time), but to inform Caeser that they will not tolerate another round of bullshit tax increases or additonal petty fines and penalties.

You see the ride is over for the most fiscally irresponsible Democrat machine ever created. I'm sure he was warned that they will be looking for other locations to move their businesses to outside of Rome's city limits if such nonsense occurs (That's presuming that they even had the honor to talk to him).

Like the genius idea of wanting to tax the air over each persons home that has satellite TV. Shortshanks is hurtin and it ain't from blue balls.

But I'm sure he has another million and a half in the budget to polish the bean at his 700 million dollar park. I'd love to be a fly on the wall when they're doing the flower budget for 2009.

Hey Genius boy with the negativity. 5% percent sales tax in Kenosha. HMMMM? Let's see. Spend 30$ in gas to save 15$, that's if you spend $300.00

And just think, you would need to spend $600.00 to realize the cost savings of your frugal trip.
Wow, There's some real logic for you.

And again asshat, $8.00 dollar savings if you fill up in Kenosha with 20 gallons. Wow. Dude. We know you weren't an economics major, that's for damn sure.

Cutting off Christmas parties? HAHAHA. Oh like AIG. HAHAHA. $400,000.00 after they got the first 85 billion. Must have been a helluva party.

And OBAMA throw us some bomes? Ya, right after he does his first presidential interview of his presidential career with eveybody's favorite magazine, Ebony. Some CHANGE alright. HAHAHAHAHA. Remember, CHANGE you can believe in. HAHAHAHAHA. What a bunch of sheep.

But in retrospect, I heard Biden is doing his first vice presidential interview with Cracked magazine.

Just something to roll around in your head...

11/13/2008 07:47:00 PM

Yeah, bitch and I welcome that sweet change. If I don't get a position, it's because someone else was more qualified...NOT because their color alone gave them the advantage--the way it's now been most of my life. Earn the position is all I'm saying. And welfare-to-work only. Stop with the handouts that are draining society.

Hey Dude...??????? Negativity? No REALITY.

Tell me about economics. You must have gone to CPS probably on the short bus.

If a 1,000 cars are up in Kenosha (and other places) filling up with gas and shopping, the sales tax Chicago and Cook county LOSE per day is phenomenal (Uh-oh a BIG word - better look it up)

Let's say they only save 55 to $10 in taxes per car (a very LOW estimate but I'll give you that). That's $5,000 - $10,000 a day the county and your employer are losing.

365 days times $5,000 is $1.825 Million a year. For $10,000, it's $3.65 Million a year.

AND that's only one location, Dude. Add Hammond, the outlying suburbs, and you're well into the MILLIONS $$.

As for parties held downtown - 300 people - let's say 150 cars, That's $150 just for the county lost - not to mention all the other parking taxes PLUS the 10.25% tax on the TAB (300 people times $50 a plate) = 515,000 Tax @10.25%= $1,537.50. Let's say three parties a day are cancelled for the next 40 days.

That's $184,500 in lost taxes - not to mention lost wages of all the waitstaff who then don't pay payroll taxes.

And YOUR example of a $400,000 party? Lose that in Chicago and that's $41,000 just in sales tax for the one event. And if it was THAT BIG, chances are they would be staying in hotels - ADD the hotel tax up as homework and get back to us.

Who do you think pays your salary, officer Doofus? The tooth fairy? Santa?

Now go back to Huck Finn's and finish your donut. Class for the tarded is over.

"Anyone read any Barbara Ehrenreich (Nickel and Dimed, This Land is Their Land, etc.) about the real American economic decline?"

I have and I agree with you. Our economic problems didn't start with a democratic congress in 2006 nor will they be cured by the republicans. Check out I.O.U.S.A. (google it) and read Ehrenreich. What happens to Americans when the largest employer in the country is Walmart? Just over minumim wage-poor/non-existant health care and scraping by. If you couldn't be the police-what could you do to make the money you're used to?

Have you thought about your plan B?

Use tuition reimbursement to prepare you for a second career before you have to leave this one. The city's already limited it for civilians-when will they limit it for you? Take it away?

Wake up! The F.O.P can't save you, the pension board can't save you, the city can't save you.

You have to save yourself.

Educate yourself. Open up your deferred comp statement and realise the trouble we're all in. Plan ahead. Save money-bring your lunch to work-learn as much as you can about your finances. Get a library card and start reading (use your tax dollars!) and understanding the economy. Don't let the talking heads on Fox or CNN tell you what to do-make your own decisions.

Your future and your family's future is in your hands. Get a spine and do something instead of whining about how bad it is.

County slush funds:

County Commissioners have been receiving 14 grand a year from a fund that nobody knew existed(?)
according to one of them, he's been receiving this for the past 15 yrs. Some never reported on their income tax return. (IRS take note) according to Fitz they got Capone that way didn't they. A fund that nobody knows where it comes from and had no accounting record of it existing. I'd like one of those a month!!! no big media coverage on this either. figures.

WTF is that supposed to mean? Different species of police? I've dealt with 009 coppers a ton of times and they have all been top notch. Never had a single problem and if anything i would say they are the most normal and down to earth people i've met in area 1 for sure.
As for the police service, that district is busy as hell so i could see how the actual service time would suck. But don't blame the coppers, that's going on all over the city with manpower shortage. And also i've been clued into the fact that the 3rd watch capt has some super secret "b team" going on which he downs most of the rapids every day. So there goes your service.
