Nice City Ripoff

Who wrote this contract? And who's really benefiting?
  • Under a new CTA policy, the agency is paying the $100 fine for each red-light violation instead of requiring bus drivers who broke the law to hand over the cash.

The change was made in part because of pressure from the bus drivers union in response to the proliferation of red-light cameras across the city, officials said.

They added, however, that it's now easier to mete out discipline because the CTA has access to the photos and video footage of the violations.
So if a city owned bus goes through a city intersection, monitored by an outside contractor's red light camera, the CTA pays the fine to the contractor and the contractor kicks back a portion of the fine back to the City after taking their cut?

Why wasn't some city-exemption written into the contract whereby the photos would be used for disciplinary processes and retraining of bus drivers rather than this little money switch? It's not like the contractor is wasting money on film - we understand these are all digital operation and the storage capacity for a single camera unit runs to tens of thousands of pictures.

This whole operation stinks.

THE KEY IS THE CTA HAS ACCESS TO THE FOOTAGE!

I RECALL A DOUBLE MURDER W/1 OFFICER INVOVED AN THE DICKS HAD TO CALL AROUND TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO PULL VIDEO FROM THESE CAMERAS!

ONCE AGAIN THE DEPARTMENT IS NOT TRYING TO SOLVE HOMICIDES BUT IT SURE KNOWS HOW TO RAISE CASH FOR SHORT PRICK!

SO WHEN ARE THE DICKS GOING TO HAVE ACCESS TO THESE CAMERAS? AT LEAST IN THE AREA!

SO IF UR WHITE SHIRT BOSS WANTS NUMBERS GIVE HIM THE STINK EYE AND DO SOME CTA CHECKS AND A CONTACT CARD ON THE HOMELESS GUY SLEEPING IN THE STATION WITH SWOLLEN NUTZ...

Have the suckass coppers that are still producing activity for the machine start hammering the bus drivers. I can't tell you how many times I've given passes to mopes driving both busses and their personal vehicles over the years that didn't meet proper license, insurance or registation requirements.

I could be wrong, but I thought the manufacturer/contractor only received money for installation and maintenance of the cameras and that the $$$ for the fines went to the city, no?

The CTA paying the fines for the drivers is probably just another Operating Expense that the CTA will end up getting reimbursed by some State or Federal Transit Bailout so the CTA will remain solvent. This way the CTA can continue to fill the pockets of RICHIE AND HIS DEN OF THIEVES with the kind of cash that they have become used to !!!

Those cameras are constant running VIDEO, not single shot photo. The photos are still frame captures. Keep that in mind for crime scenes or "extra-curricular activities".

The contractor gets no money from red light violations involviing municiple vehicles. This is simply a budget shuffle from CTA to city funding strips. The CTA has independent funding, they must transfer payments for gas and services to the city through funding strips. The vender provides info to the city about municiple vehcile violations and the city collects from these outside entities witout the vender being involved. It is all budget nonsense and you think the city would just void these violation notices. Here is the catch: the hall has three lackies assigned to investigate these violations. So although the outside vender gets nothing from these types of violations, the city gets three extra spots to give to some southside reverend.

I would prefer the vender in Arizone would get the money instead.

The city that works!!!!!!

The camera light was ruled unconstitutional in Minnesota because it does not ID the driver. Nobody want's to challenge it here. Studies show that it may even be more dangerous with the cameras than without. It's all about the money. They, the city, have to go along and pay or how would it look? On the other hand California has a system that does ID the driver and the fine is well over $300. The equipment is much more expensive. So I guess it's pick your poison boys pick your poison.

OT, see the $19mil coke seizure in 10? The city should turn around and sell it to local dealers and balance the budget! Evidence has been lost before...

Actually, it is a way for state supported CTA funds to find their way to a general CTA coffer. I am sure it is an accounting game. The CTA gets state funds. The bus runs the camera. The 'state' funds were being used for just such a action. Now the state funds pay the city for the traffic violation. The city now gets to use those funds for anything they want. Amazing.

Something is fishy.... why wouldn't the city nolle the tickets? My guess is that the fund used to pay the tickets is a restricted fund.... but is one that can be used to pay tickets. Once it pays tickets, it turns into funding for the camera contractor and into.... REVENUE for the city, and ends up in a fund that the mayor can use for more flowerpots or whatever. My guess is that this is a fancy way for the mayor to cook the books, taking restricted funding and funneling it into a payoff for a contractor and revenue for City. Maybe once the press is done analyzing Michelle Obama's dress or projecting next weeks american idol winner, a reporter will be freed up to do a little digging around? Daley is PAYING tickets!!! Hello? Bueller!!!

Most govt local, state agencies require the vehicle driver to pay their own traffic fines.

i thought dept of revenue collected all the money. the city just pays a fixed amount (and i'm sure it's an exorbitant amount) to the operators of the camera's, whether they catch anyone or not.

but i do agree, the whole thing stinks. i've seen those camera's go off when someone turns right on red, which is legal unless otherwise posted.

What silly nonsense is this? A CTA bus driver is not on his way to the mall or out "driving around." He is working for the city. His job is driving.

You want him to be responsible for a red light ticket that he got while he was working. You better watch what you wish for, because CPD officers will be next.

A city bus driver who is exposed to getting lots of tickets is the same bus driver who has a route with the most red light cameras. That means that that route is one of the busiest and most congested routes in the city.

Isn't it possible that most of these tickets come when a bus is partially over the line when the light turns red because they can't drop everyone off in a snow pile, or they have to get around a car parked in bus stop.

Do people in this city actually think that bus drivers are randomly blowing red lights all over the city? Don't you think they realize they'll be fired if they cause a serious accident.

This same media/public nonsense thinking is paralyzing people who work for the government. The end result is bus drivers, just like police officers, will become overly cautious, and the services they provide will grind to a slow crawl.

Write bus drivers? Are you out of your fucking mind. What the hell is the matter with you?

As much as this is typical of the city, how about all the police officers who purposely run through those cameras also even when they aren't on an emergency call?

It's a good thing we never even see those tickets in the mail or we would be disciplined also.

CFD drivers get red light tickets unless their lights and sirens are on. The city goes back to see who was driving the rig at the time. I can't remember if there's any discipline involved, but I know the driver has to pay the fine.

well the law states the "owner" of the vehicle gets the ticket.

that is why the cta drivers dont have to pay

I'm surprised you missed the flow of the money here.

The money the CTA is using to pay the city isn't all the city's money. CTA is funded from the state as well.

That's the reason.
