Cameras Feeling the Heat

What a difference three years makes. CBS 2 News reported three years ago:
  • They've fought for it for a long time. Now, a city neighborhood says it feels safer because it has a police camera.

Residents of Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood are applauding police and the installation of the camera in their community.

The blinking blue and white camera is a signal that street gangs aren't welcome in the neighborhood.
  • One camera in the Austin neighborhood was installed because the aldermen said that people wanted it, so CBS 2 decided to go out there and see how it was working out.

"The stuff that's happening in the neighborhood now and no one's really enforcing it," one neighborhood resident said.

"The police don't really come through," said another neighborhood resident.

When asked if the cameras discourage crime and drug dealing, he said, "It should, but it's not working. It's just a waste of money."
That would be because there aren't enough police to staff the cars, the beats, the districts. Nice to see the public finally taking notice. And the media playing catch-up.

To say the cameras don't stop crime is total BS. With their help I have personally issues 3 parkers and told 2 piss bums to move it into the alley.

criminals understand a punch in the nose, a kick in the gut and time behind bars.
cameras, while they have their place, are no match for aggressive policeing.
too bad we can't be aggressive anymore due to cameras.
you don't put a camera in a sausage factory.....no one want's to see that.
i hear we are getting more cameras.

The cameras only stop the police from during their job. Who wants to be filmed stopping a car and tossing it for a pistol. Sack of sh*t Daley would be the first one to throw you under the bus for some rules violation. Contact cards and event numbers ONLY.

I guess I’m just a cynic, but the thought of putting up a camera housing, with blinking lights on it in a problem area kind of reminds me of the days when they would put a State Troopers squad in the construction zones with a blow-up doll in it. How well did that work? How long did it take for the speeders to figure out that it’s all show?
I believe that cameras have a place, but at least use it as a tool and make it work, use the latest technology and have them used by someone who knows what there looking for and how to respond to it.
But what the hell, maybe Shortshanks will have a blowup doll on every corner and tell the press that the streets are safe again…

I heard that Daley wants the traffic cameras to record ALL license plate numbers and cross reference them to check and see if the owner has insurance on the vehicle. He said it could generate "millions" in revenue for the city.

OT: what's the deal with the new tahoes that can't get gas because they're not registered with fleet? the people driving the new tahoes on 3rd and 1st watch were told they can't get fuel because until fleet adds these to the list, there's nothing that can be done. that left 3 tahoes on empty sitting in the lot. can't this city do anything right?

The cameras are such a joke. They look important to the citizens who think WOW! What pretty blue blinking lights. Then we have a shooting, right under one of them, and the city says oops, that one was on the fritz that night. Yea right! I’m sure it was just pointed in some wrong direction, blurry and stuck as with most of them. Take a look at the fusion center, a wall of screens to watch and two cops watching CNN. That works!
If I were moving to Shitcago, I would pick the neighborhood that has no cameras. I would think it’s an indication that the hood must be halfway decent if there are no spy camera’s present.

The cameras will NOT work in Logan Square either!

The only thing the cameras are meant to do is to replace the Police Officers in the 014 District. Manpower is way down compared to when I first started there in the early 1990's. 014 used to be well over 300 officers back in the day, but now if you have 260 in the data warehouse that's a surprise!

Just ask "Da Mayor"!

new surge from 35th street demanding activity from POD camera missions. They must have been told to get numbers to justify their existence. Problem is you still need PO's to get you those numbers.

Those cameras should empty boxes with a flashing blue light for all the good they do.

Just more pork that shortshanks spent our money on.

If the cameras are really so good why not a camera in front of shortshanks house instead of police valets 24/7?

Someone in the department is supposed to physically go down to Fleet Mgmt and register the vehicle to obtain a number to enter it into the system. Problem is there's only one guy who does that, and it seems he works a two hour shift early mornings. I know because we had to do it ourselves. Apparently the Fleet Mgmt guy doesn't have a gps on his head. Best of luck, my friend, no command support as usual.
