Shortshanks Fills Budget Gap

  • City officials announced today that the $2.5 billion deal to lease Midway Airport to a private operator will not be completed.

"The company cannot secure the financing needed," said Gene Saffold, Mayor Richard Daley's chief financial officer.

  • The city will keep a $126 million down payment that the prospective Midway operator had paid already, Saffold said.
So if Shortshanks can pull this kind of non-deal off a few times this year and next, he'll be able to afford his precious Olympics, his three dozen bodyguards, another hundred Tahoes and maybe a 6% raise for the Police and Fire Departments.

Maybe he can even buy out J-Fed.

How about the city using 88 million, yes 88 million to update the blue line train. I just can't believe that instead of using that money toward the police department, the city would rather put that enourmous sum toward updating a rail line. I guess the safety of the citizens isn't as big a deal.

The citizens of Chicago should demand Da Mayo open the REAL books not the COOKED ones. You would be surprised to see how much money there is. The TIFF money which is suppose to go to city services including labor contracts is well past a billion. Da Mayo is a bum, he's got to GO!!!!!!!!

Be thankful, very thankful you have a well paying job with good benefits in today's times !!!!

4/20/2009 07:35:00 PM

Hey jerk off, like others have said, most of chose this job before "times were bad." We had to deal with freinds and family asking us why in the world we wanted to be the police and get paid a lowly civil servant's salary.

Most of joined b/c we wanted to help people, plain and simple. We wanted to lead our lives in a noble way and not be slaves to the almighty dollar. We knew we would never be rich by taking the job and would struggle financially if we had a decent sized family, but we took it anyway.

Also, i, along with almost every person in my academy graduating class have degrees from various colleges, some even law degrees. Some of us took decent sized pay CUTS to come on this job.

You had every chance to sign up and take the test to join the cpd. But, most likely you were rolling in the dough riding the great economy at the time and didn't think twice about serving your fellow man. Or maybe you were just too scared to join and didn't want to risk your life everyday for an ungreatful city (which i can not critisize you for).
Whatever your reason for NOT joining, don't for one second come on here and try to make us feel bad for you b/c we have a secure job right now and you may not.

When times were good for you and everyone else, people were laughing at us and what little we make. Although i'm not laughing at the possibility that you may not have a job i certianly don't feel bad if you lost your 100+K salary job and weren't smart enough to save anything.

In a year or two the economy will be back up and everyone will go back to thinking we are stupid for being the police and laughing at our paychecks once again. That's ok with us though b/c on our death beds we will die knowing that we at least tried to make a difference in this world and we didn't live our lives with money as our focus.

Daley is Teflon! The citizens here love him! He is so Bridgeport! All his stuttering and grasping for words only endears him more to the voters! If you talk to people all over the city and suburbs, they think he is doing a great job for the city! It is is insane! Even visitors drool over how clean and beautiful Chicago is and the lakefront, like "Oh my God!" Daley's gimmick continues to work! Indicting him will never happen! He is like Whitey Bulger, working secretly with the Feds, tossing them info occasionally on corruption while he goes freely about his financial scams and construction deals unscathed! This Olympic thing is a win win for him! If he gets it, his friends and cohorts make money! If he doesn't get it, his friends still made lots of money on real estate deals, salaries for all their family and friends and jobs with the city after this all fades away! There are not enough investigative reporters in the country that can keep up with all the scams and "under the table" deals going on behind the scenes trying to get this Olympics! He could care less about layoffs or his alledged "250M dollar defecit!"
All just a matter of moving money around to make it appear as if the city is going broke! A miracle will occur after all the unions have knelt before Daley! Voila! No more defecit!

Daley announces city’s new CFO
by Wendell Hutson

On Thursday, Mayor Richard M. Daley named a Harlan high school graduate as the city’s new chief financial officer.

Gene Saffold, 54, replaces Paul Volpe who became the mayor’s chief of staff in December. Saffold, who grew up on the South Side in the West Chesterfield neighborhood, previously worked with the mayor’s older brother, Bill, as managing director for National Accounts for JP Morgan Chase & Co. His primary duties there were to ensure the delivery of products and services to public sector and pension fund clients.

“Gene brings with him exceptional experience from the private sector and is ideally suited to help us maintain our commitment to sound management and fiscal responsibility,” Daley said at a Thursday news conference. “It's a difficult job, but I am very pleased that Gene Saffold is coming on board to help us do it.”

And the mayor said he has set specific goals for Saffold.

“I’ve asked him to continue our efforts to take a long term view when it comes to understanding the economy and protecting our financial stability. And I've asked him to help us protect our taxpayers and to put the people of Chicago first,” Daley said. “And I've asked him to remember that asking our taxpayers for more must always be the last resort.”

I hope he has more education than Harlan H.S.! Oh, he worked with Bill Daley? Oh, ok, I understand now!

First, the POS Aldermen may be YOUR counterparts, but they aren't MINE. They can't carry our jock straps for exactly the reasons you pointed out.

Second, be careful what you wish for, Tiger. They've been known to go without raises for goodly amounts of time, mostly due to the fact that each of them has a Ward petty cash account of about $1.33 million per year and, like fire fighters, they have plenty of spare time to work other jobs.

Your point is well taken, though.

“Three dozen bodyguards”! Come on SCC, Daley doesn’t have three dozen bodyguards; he only has twenty-six! They all have a civil service rank of police officer, but two are commanders with all the perks. That means take home cars and everything else a commander gets. The other twenty-four make sergeants pay and everyone has a city issued Blackberry. They are on a twelve hour schedule, but rarely work twelve hours.

Next you will be saying Daley has a fleet of vehicles at his disposal. I’ll be the first to tell you he only has thirteen vehicles parked in that garage on Normal at his disposal. These include vans so the “bodyguards” can drive Maggie, the kids, and the grandkids around whenever they need a ride somewhere. I would call it a taxi service for the Daley clan, but Daley is not paying for any of it, we, the taxpayers are

Don't forget the way Daley & Company had this deal set up, in the long rub ( 99 years ) the taxpayers would be loosing money!
If you crunch the numbers, and add just 2% a year, we are way better off without the privatization.
Also, there is almost a BILLION dollars that police, fire and ambulance service will cost over that time period.
In addition, the mayor already has a plan to privatize the fire service at the airports. So can private police be far behind?

That whole telling us about the budget is all phony numbers anyway. Why do people believe a word of it??? You honestly think he tells everyone the truth. He's a piece of shit. This city is a cash cow and he changes everyone's whole perspective when he lies.

This is why stuff just gets done that he wants done. He could care less. Streets, that is just his "example" of why we are "broke." One thing needs to go bad for his crying poor to seem valid.

"It's a rainy day, but there's a flood coming. And when the flood comes, that's what we're concerned about"-Mayor Dick eM Daley.

This was Dick eM Daley's response to why he won't use the huge ammount of money received in the selling of the Skyway and parking meters. Why use the billions of dollars received to actually improve the city? Just lay people off because that will save a million or two.

By laying off city workers, doesn't this actually HURT the chicago economy? By working for the city, residency applies, therefore these employees have to pay taxes to the city (real estate, etc.). Now these people get laid off. It's hard enough to afford the city by working for it, but take away the income. Odds are this former city worker will not be able to afford living here and will move out to a suburb or different county all together. You have now taken a GUARANTEED tax payer and replaced him/her with what? A foreclosed home? That will bring in dollars.

The city has no money to pave the streets. The great Ginger Rugai states that Mt. Greenwood has "only 30 potholes." How stupid do these people think we are? The IOC comes to town and Tommy Byrne states that suddenly Washington Park has moved to the top of the list for a COMPLETE REPAVING. Not just to fill in potholes, but to be completely redone. I wonder why? Geez, it's not because the olympics might go there i suppose. It's because it's a main artery in the city we are told to believe. Drive down any main road in the city, be it Pulaski, Garfield, Halsted and the road looks like it has been carpet bombed by a fleet of Air Force bombers. Pieces of tires lace the ground. The infrastructure is gone, yet we can buy land for an olympic village which may or may not come. We can repave Washington Park to make it look nice for people who will be here for 4 days. But we cannot provide basic services for the city's residents. When is this money going to be used Mr. Mayor? When is the rainy day, flood, typhoon gonna come? I'm guessing the flood will come in 2016 during the summer and suddenly billions will be available. We will not have a CPD, CFD or fully staffed Streets and San department by this point. The roads will be undrivable. But don't worry citizens, we will have a shiny olympic stadium that will be in use for 2 weeks in 2016. The mayor cares about you and the city. How do I know? Dick eM Daley says so

Maybe he, Shortshanks should sell that Fucking silver bean that's all scratched up with some gangbanger's name to Japan so that when the 2016 Olympics are performed there he can get a free airline ticket to the games in Japan(without paying the tax of course) and stand by it for a picture as a tribute from Chicago, knowing the whole time that the real citizens of this city DO NOT want all of the industrial, political, pollution and security problems associated with the Olympics in this day and age of Pay to Play/participate in construction contracts WALSH!!!!!Back door security deals Venacro!!!!!Aldercreatures!!!!!!!

Two executives of a politically connected garbage cart firm were indicted today on charges stemming from a $2 million contract with Mayor Richard Daley's administration.

Here we go again. What politically connected garbage firm is going to clean up after the Taste of Chicago and other city festivals now. Daley gives the contract to these people and---I am shocked--we have another scandal.Totally incompetent leadership. Daley will go on the news and say he is shocked. How much longer and how much more will we have to go through with this NIT-WIT.

you would think that within 72 hrs. you have over 30 people shot (that we know of. seeing the media is in the tank for Da Mayor and Obama) that the people would be calling for J-Feds head. Interesting that SOS, TRU, MSF didn't make one bit of difference. Fortunately the weather went bad and suppresed the violence somewhat. The citizens of this once great city should rise up and demand J-Feds resignation. If he had an ounce of shame he'd resign now.

This sounds like the sort of thing that they tell me goes on in one of those "bathhouses." Everything sort of one big heaving mass -- can't quite make out details through the steam.

I totally agree with you and you need to keep telling this to young policemen and foolish old ones. The city has gotten rich off the intrest on the non-raise . Dont let them make even more by a 1 percent then 6 and 6 percent 3 year contract. Tell em okay, 8 percent first year and 4 perc. and 3.5 perce. at least

4/21/2009 10:34:00 AM

Tell them??? We can tell them 40% over 4 yrs if we want. We can tell them anything we want. Getting is another question. We will end up 2-3% as always!

"Three dozen bodyguards!' Come on SCC, Daley doesn’t have three dozen bodyguards; he only has twenty-six!

"Next you will be saying Daley has a fleet of vehicles at his disposal. I’ll be the first to tell you he only has thirteen vehicles parked in that garage on Normal..."

--4/21/2009 08:52:00 AM

Sure, and wouldn't it be a fine thing to see Daley's Private Army on parade, right up Michigan Avenue at noon for the whole world to see?

The 26 bodyguards marching in full dress, SMGs at port arms, the thirteen vehicles following at a dignified crawl with alternating headlights flashing...THERE HE IS! IT'S THE MAYOR!

The crowd goes wild...

Despite this impenetrable wall of steel, despite the frantic "X"ing out of the hated Meigs Field like a man slashing an old family portrait to exorcise his inner demons, a lone Cessna still circles ominously at the pale blue edge of the Mayor's nightmares.

It's the last private plane in the world.

The pitch of its turbocharged aero engine rises as it banks, turns, steadies on its course...

"GAAAA-AAAAAAAAA!"

The Mayor awakens bolt upright, bug-eyed with terror and soaked with sweat, clutching at the bedclothes, tearing them.

Lights snap on. Radios crackle, and the sound of running footsteps is heard.

"Mr. Mayor? Wake up. Mr. Mayor?"

MAYOR DALEY IS CLINICALLY INSANEWe feel obligated to do everything we can to help that along -- in the sense of whimsical creative writing, of course.

________________________________

Recently, our pension fund has been subpoenaed by the inspector generals office. They are requesting any and all documents regarding DV Urban Realty. This is a company that is 51% owned by Allison Davis (a Tony Rezko partner) and Bob Vanecko, the nephew of mayor Daley. This was a risky real estate fund to develop properties in low income neighborhoods.
Our board attorney, David Kugler, has advised the board to not comply with this subpoena, citing jurisdiction. This is a legal technicality to avoid giving up any information. I motioned at two consecutive meetings to comply with the subpoena. Unfortunately my motions have fallen on deaf ears. The board has refused to comply. Our board should not do the dirty work of covering up for the mayor's nephew.
Money from this pension fund is derived from over 9% of an officer's annual salary and from taxes that are levied. Any transaction conducted by the fund should be completely transparent. Both Officers and Taxpayers should be appalled at this.
I urge all officers to forward on this to other officers.
Also, THE NEXT PENSION BOARD MEETING IS APRIL 29TH AT 221 N. LaSALLE 16TH
FLOOR at 9:00 a.m.

That's still to much work. Don't do anything..PERIOD!

Example: Cops working St. Patricks day (southside parade) made more than 50 arrests. This isn't being critical of the coppers making the said arrests, but of the system itself.

These were B.S. misdemeanor arrests. So what happens? Many of the cops were "no shows" in court, because they knew that the arrests were B.S., and they get in trouble!

This the day for Weis' contract to be up? Right!

The date of the next mayoral election is 21 February 2011, which is the last Tuesday, of the year before a presidential election.

So what is Shortshanks going to do?

Give Weis an extension on his contract and say your work grinding this department into the ground isn't finished yet.

Give the reverends who they want for Superintendent to pull votes away from the two, (I guarantee there will be two), black candidates running against him.

Would he give us one of the few competent, people who once wore a blue shirt, who rose from our own ranks as Superintendent to appease us? Not likely.

Stay safe, and get everyone who know registered to vote. Especially retired city employees and their families, this will be an important election.

Will he return triumphant to take the throne when the King is no more.

Certain government officials are untouchable, Daley is certainly one of them, now more then ever. He was questioned by the feds several years ago as a feeble warning to watch his step. Corruption has been the fabric binding all levels of government in Chicago since day one. Watch, if by some small chance the city does not get the olympics, Daley will announce shortly thereafter that Chicago will host a WORLDS FAIR. You heard it hear first.

----------------------------------

Based on Daley’s recent actions, I don’t think he is going to run again. Even though he’s arrogant, he is not acting like someone who in the future will be asking for our vote. Why would he start reneging on signed labor deals with the trades, while continuing to give the CPD the ole Heisman? That’s about 34,000 city workers and their families he’s pissing on.
Add to that, he is pedaling our tax payer assets like Tyrone pawns tube sox on some off ramp into a shitty neighborhood. His embarrassing response to the snow and pothole problems has pissed off many residents and his tired, “I don’t know” bullshit about all the corruption going on, has pissed off everyone. I think he is done, and doesn’t care anymore about anything but getting HIS Olympics in HIS city and fuck anyone that gets in HIS way.
