Cop's Guide to Good Eats

Don't give away too many good spots though:
  • Are you a cop? Do you eat food? We need your story!

Sgt. David Haynes and local writer Christopher Garlington are looking for quotes for their upcoming book, The Beat Cop’s Guide to Chicago Eats, to be published in October, 2009.

Remember The Street and San Man’s Guide to Chicago Eats? Our book is the bigger, better, follow-up—and it’s written by a cop!

The Beat Cop’s Guide is about getting great neighborhood food, in a half hour, cheap. It’s about real Chicago food. And who knows better what’s good in any neighborhood better than the beat cop that works there every day?

So we’re reaching out to every cop we know.

Send us your best story about being a cop and eating lunch in Chicago. Stories like this:

  • making an arrest while you waited on fries at a hot dog joint
  • a story about how food you bought from a walk-up chicken shack helped you get information that led to an arrest
  • how a particular sub sandwich from this one café is what keeps you going on midnights
  • the best place to eat lunch on your beat
  • what foods are best in a squad car--and what foods really, really don’t belong there
  • hazards of eating in uniform
  • (we’re not kidding on this one) cops and donuts
  • where to get the best ribs in Chicago
  • anything you think makes a good story involving cops and lunch and food

The book is currently in rewrites and due to go into production after August 7. So we need these stories pronto. We’re not looking for Hemingway here—we’ll clean up your story. We’re pros. Don’t worry. Just email your stories to Sgt. David Haynes at dave@davehaynes.net. If we put your story in the Beat Cop’s Guide, you’ll get invited to the super cool VIP book release party (a bucket of Miller Lite and hot dogs on Dave’s deck), and a signed copy of the book. Plus, you’ll be famous.
Drop them a line.

What food is good in a squad car? Oh, Dave can *literally* write the book on that.

He always leaves enough evidence behind that we know where he stopped all tour long.

Laurie's Pizza at Foster/Broadway had everything! Pizza, hot dogs, Polish, etc...They even had a room in back for the police. The "Circuses" were great too! Knife fights between waitresses( several of whom proudly bore children of coppers), strip shows on Tuesday and Friday in the bar,Uptown at its best! 30 years of 020 Coppers loved that place. Today, the place and the area are a mere shadow of their former urban glory!

Lauries sustained 3 generations
of coppers and Uptown clay people....a true landmark.

With hopes of further enhancing the zest of the sauces of West and South Side barbecue shacks, I flew from CDG Paris to ORD with the finest black truffles and pate de foie gras from the Perigord.

I was crestfallen when management unanimously declined to infuse their extraordinarily mouth-watering barbecue sauce with my culinary gifts.

To add insult to injury, all refused to divulge the secret recipes for their world-famous sauces.

Enraged and after devouring a full slab at Lem's on E. 75th St., I raced back to O'Hare for my return to Paris with several cases of Flamin' Hot Cheetos, grape soda of an unknown vintage and a jereboam of superb West Side barbecue sauce.

Bon appetit!

Good Eats??

Ahhhhh, memories!

One of the "workin' girls" on Madison wanted to get out of the way for the night. One of the regulars, too smart to be out in the world like she was but who were we to judge?

Wind chill of about -60; she walked up and tapped on the passenger window of our pea-soup green 86 Caprice. She made a little loot and she didn't want ol' boy kicking a pocket in her ass and taking it from her. "Ya ain't got nothin' on ya right?" "No office, I know better than that." "Ok, just turn around and stick ya hands in the window thumbs up." *click-click* (handcuffs)

"Ya hungry?" "Yes!" "Hey pardner, let's roll over to Jim's on Maxwell & Halsted and get her somethin' to eat."

She ate and was in a warm place. She also filled out the arrest report for us except for the charge for Sol. Rides (very good penmanship). She also gave us some good info that led to some pretty nice arrests a few days later. The W/C gave the ok and we took her to Women's Central at 1121... She said "thank you" as the Detention Aide escorted her in.

Nothing spectacular. No chase, no car wrecks, no gun battles. Just a memory of how the odd coincidence of Policing, cheap eats and treating people right led to actionable info and decent arrests.

I discovered this gem back in the 1990's. The blueberry pancakes are out of this world; they don't use frozen strawberries, they use FRESH. The syrup is fantastic. They charge us "Full Boat", but I don't care because it's a breakfast culinary experience to be shared by all.

Other items on the menu are terrific too, but those blueberry pancakes are fantastic! Now I know what a crackhead goes through while "Jonesen'" for a pipe!

Not Funny: The stroke-ivisor who made coppers burn a good eat spot by ordering them to write the owner a parker... with the owner on scene and pleading with the stroke-ivisor that he would move the car.

Stroke-ivisor's response? "I don't care, I don't eat here anyway."

Damn Funny: Same stroke-ivisor crying and threatening spars like a big fat bitch when coppers lit HIS good eat spots on fire with parkers and more parkers.

Coppers responses? "We don't care, we don't eat at those places anyway." (too many rumors and feelings of really baaad ju-ju for a smart blueshirt to be in those joints anyway.)

...Never ever fuck around with a copper's eat spot!

It gets a lot of police because it is centrally located, fast, convienient, and clean.

Great food? No, mediocre at best.

to 08/01 @1218pm. The Golden Shell had the best breakfast the eggs were cooked just right nottoo runny and the pancakes were always hot and they would warm up the syrup for you if you wanted. It was a shame when they closed down. I have to agree Johnny's Snack Shop has the best eggs and cheese. But for Mexican food El Milagro on 26th street has great chicken tacos. Only thing I didn't know they put the whole chicken leg in the taco! I ordered two by the time I finished getting all the chicken off I had enough for 5 tacos and they put rice and beans inside too. Talk about generous portions. For Italian food there are too many good places. Sabatino's on Irving, Salerno's on Grand, Miceli's on Oakley. One of the last great things about this city one of the best for great food of all kinds! Being a cop you find them all.

Anybody remember the Belden Deli at Clark and Belden? Its been gone forever but it was a 24 hour joint that was high on the list for midnight 018th District coppers.

Recently deceased radio personality, Chicago Eddie Schwartz, used to frequent the place after his overnight radio gig and often picked up coppers lunch tabs, usually without even telling them. Guys would ask for their check and the waitress would just say Eddie paid it on his way out.

In fairness, Ross Cascio, deceased former owner of Lincoln Park Towing, occasionally did the same.

Anyway, good, FAST service for the Police. They REALLY understood how little time we have for lunch.

Doughnuts: There used to be a place in Roseland with great ovesized doughnuts. Can't think of the name of it. Maybe somebody else can.

8/01/2009 10:13:00 PM

*************************************

OLD FASHIONED DONUTS. 114th & Michigan. It's still there.(Kind of like Huck Finn's donuts.)Roseland used to be so nice, now it looks like a nuclear bomb went off there. Just get there early in the A.M. before all the zombie's and crackheads wake up. Don't eat in. Just place your order to go. Trust me.Try the Carmel cake donut.

I used to work the northside and all the A/5 guys would rave about the Dog Stop on Belmont. I went there a dozen times because that's where everyone else wanted to go. Each time I'd vow never to go back there. Truly, the shittiest food I've ever had anywhere in Chicago! How can you fuck up a hot dog? I guess northside coppers have lower expectations.

I still think LaPasadita south of Division, East side of Ashland still has the best steak tacos. Steak, onions & Cilantro, fresh cheese wrapped in a soft corn tortilla. Yum!

Suzy's drive-in was always good too. I don't remember the location anymore.(Peterson ave?) They have about 100 flavors of shakes and malts. The sloppy Joe's are the best!

Hot Doug's on California & Roscoe was great until it was discovered and now it's line's of yuppies out the door and around the building. We used to go to the old smaller location before it burned down.

a little secret called phillies.. phillies is an exclusive that is still running. no signs, no lights just a brick building with a brown metal door. you have to knock first then they open up to let you in. its not a secret club or anything but thats just how he operates the joint. a decent looking place on the inside with a breakfast to die for. never once have i actually been able to finish the breakfase. phillies has been in buisness(silently) for over 45 years. not only can you order your typical greasy spoon type of food there but he makes some of the best pastas and seafood dishes out there. but you cant beat the italian gilled steak sandwich with grilled onions on garlic bread.. when you leave the joint you have to exit through the alley.. great joint and a great secret.. and the place never really had a name, the neighborhood guys just call it phillies because he opened it 45 years ago and hes still there cookin. everyone is allowed and welcome there.... you just have to find it first!!!!!

I just had breakfast at a small diner at 160 N. Halsted called Johnny's. Lots of cops in there, from all over. Not a fancy place but the food was awesome and bigger portions for the police, with a discount. Prices are really reasonable. In the corner of the restaurant dubbed "Cops Corner" were old pictures of our CPD, including the motorcycle cop giving the bird. I told the owners I had old black and white pictures of my grandfather who worked at the old Maxwell Station. They told me to bring them in, and the owner "Gus" who is like 70 years old, proudly stated in broken English his son or nephew maybe both are the police. (Kind of hard to understand him) In times like this when our own President dislikes the Police its nice to go to a place where u feel welcomed and are treated with respect. My grandfather's picture is going up, now that is what I like, "Old School." Pass the word!!!!

1 more vote for Jimmy's Hotdogs on Grand and Pulaski - but you got to get the hot sauce and eat it with the fries (as a true chicago hotdog stand should be, there is no ketchup available) - their hot sauce gives me heartburn everytime, but it tastes so good I can't stay away. Last week we thought there was a 10-1 at 025 station, all the squads were racing in, turns out Jimmy's dropped off a box of dogs and polishes as a thank you for arresting some asshole earlier that was harrasing customers.

WOW! I used to do my police academy homework in the Belden Deli over a huge bowl of chicken soup with kreplach. The Reuben sandwich was enormous served open-faced and you could just take 2 slices of rye bread and make TWO sandwiches (one to eat there and one to take home.)

Many nights after work we'd stop there and, after glancing around, realized that the entire place was populated by coppers!

Anyone remember the song "The Lincoln Park Pirates?" It referred to the Belden Deli:

Hit the lot by the grocery (Jewel) store.

Thanks for bringing up good memories. When cops were cops.

add these spots to the list:

Donuts-Dunk Donuts on Lake St at 19th in Melrose Park - BEST in the world

Hamburgers-No idea of the name it's on 95th St around California. Phenomenal burgers

Mexican-Lazos Tacos at Armitage and Western or El Milagro at 26 and Whipple

Pizza-Pompeii Bakery circa 1992 was incredible, but its garbage now. Johns Pizza on Western at Charleston and good old Pizzeria Uno is still good and good to the po-po.

Hot Dogs-Jimmys at Grand and Pulaski or Superdawg at Milwaukee and Devon

Subs-Tufanos on Polk or Heros at Addison and Western (bologna and cheese like you are in grade school)

Chicken-Shiiit, you gotta throw down at Harold's at least once to call yourself the "real police", or the Churchs at Lake and Austin.

Speaking of Lake and Austin, does Dave remember Wimpys in 015, I think that a certain P.O. customized a humper for Haynes that included "burgers eaten at Wimpys"

Good idea. Way to take initiative. Have not read all the posts on this topic, but how about donating a portion of proceeds to the Memorial Foundation as a way of giving back to those who contributed. for all those who want to know where the money goes from the foundation, they file a not-for-profit income tax form with IRS each year which is public record. Some may be surprised at the operation costs...They do so much with minimal costs. For the non-believers verify facts before you negate a worthy and honorable mission that takes care of our own. I'm just a volunteer who witnesses the dedication and passion of the Foundation.
