Jaywalking Stings

All this hoopla when there are dozens, maybe more, inside HQ people about to lose their take home cars in the next week or so!
  • Chicago police handed out 43 citations to drivers who failed to stop for people using crosswalks.

It was part of a sting set up at Belmont and Orchard on Monday night.

Plainclothes officers used the crosswalks and cars that failed to yield got pulled over and ticketed. It's part of a city wide crackdown at crosswalks. It was the first night time sting.

The police department said during the day time stings it only handed out about 18 or 20 tickets.

We've already stated our opinion on people who go strolling out into traffic in this town. We pray no cop gets hurt for this misguided publicity stunt.

Now about those take home cars. Who's losing them? We heard exempts who don't have 24 hour call out responsibilities and then everyone below that. About freaking time seeing as the abuses that have been pointed out here and elsewhere are nothing but a scandal in waiting.

Someone asked me an interesting question. Why, they asked, are the police giving people tickets for not stopping for pedestrians when there are robbers about in Lincoln Park? Whey are cops being used in this capacity instead of being put under cover in an area where violent offenders are preying on people?

My answer was that the arrest of the violent offenders would not make Shortshanks any money. Ticketing citizens who fail to stop for pedestrians who are cops will make Shortshanks money.

Now they get it.

That's OK about the inside HQ people losing their spots. The 35th Street brain trust had to make vacancies now to accommodate the fuckin' retarded, ass-kissing Yes Men & Women who "volunteered" for this latest Jaywalking Sting, in that I predict there'll be a few that will need a place to recuperate while on light/limited-duty after they get crushed by some distracted cell phone-using yuppie or overzealous cabbie.

And as far as take home cars getting yanked? My next prediction says it'll be more smoke & mirrors, CPD style, if and when it actually happens. This latest directive will die a quick death shortly after it's instituted. Expect conformity and adherence to this yet-to-be-seen knee-jerk reaction to mirror that of "mandatory" swiping in, use of in-car cameras, outdoor roll calls and the W/C getting an event number for "touring the DOC" (wink-wink).

Anyone who's been around even a little while in this game called the CPD knows how this is going to play out.

This could be perfect timing. If the cmdrs and co. don't have take home vehicles, they might be walking or biking it to work. The dept could utilize the exempt as undercovers in the sting opertion without having to pay any overtime. Surveillance officers can follow the exempt home and cite the violators who wipe or almost wipe the exempt out!

For starters, I do not have a take home car. Some that do, shouldn't. Some that do, should. Not all take home cars are strictly for perks. Some are to offset other compensation. SCC has pointed out the financial savings of eliminating the take home car but has overlooked, or is not aware of some of the reasons for it, which in of itself saves money. Take I.A.D. Sergeants for example. They rotate being on call. By contract, they should be compensated when on call. In lieu of compensation, they take home a car to which they are already assigned. One hour of on call overtime saved pays the gas for the week. A specialized unit Lieutenant doesn't put in for out of grade as a Watch Commander or put an overtime slip in because the take home car acts in lieu of overtime. A Tact Lt. works crazy hours and shifts filling in for the Watch Commander, the only perk for the position is the car. I am sure there are other spots that have take home cars for these reasons too. I agree, a lot of people have them for all the wrong reasons. But before we blast everyone that has a take home car, let's find out the real reasons for it.

How about they set up mugging stings on the northside. Maybe it just me but this is just a waste of time and resources.

If they want to run stings how about running a sting on the southside folks that play their own version of frogger on 63rd or 79th. Or how about running a sting for all the little pookies riding their bikes and playing chicken with on coming traffic.

The City is collapsing and the powers to be run a jaywalking sting. This "sting" just seems a great way to sum up J-Fed's tenure. He could fuck up a wet dream!

POLICE SUPT. JODY WEIS, it is time for you, President Obama, Mayor Daley and Gov. Quinn to call in the National Guard to help stop this slaughter of innocent kids and folks throughout our city, particularly on the South and West sides. Just because most times the gang-bangers are African-American or Hispanic and the victims are almost always black or Hispanic is no reason not to forcefully protect Chicago's citizens.

Most African-American kids and Hispanics are just trying to go to school and make a living. Decent citizens are not packing pistols, so how can they protect themselves out here in the streets? I am not going to name all of the young people and adults who have been shot down like dogs in our streets in just the last couple of weeks. Just buy a newspaper (the Sun-Times, of course) and find out for yourself . . . so you can get depressed and angry like the rest of us who are sick and tired of reading about death, corruption and destruction in Chicago.

Bring in the National Guard or let go some of those hidden funds and hire more policemen and give them more power. There should be cops patroling the high-crime areas to the degree that criminals will think first before committing crimes. If you think all this violence is going to stay confined to the inner-city neighborhoods and won't affect other communities, you are wrong. The bolder the criminals get, all lives are in danger no matter what color you are. Even politicians will be ducking bullets.

go stella ...from tues. sun-times!

The "haves" vs. the "have nots"

If you have a car, you want to keep it, if you don't, fuck those who do.

I understand completely the opinions of those without towards those who do. But what if one of you gets in one of those positions? Would you still have that thought?

Never give up something once you got it, whether it's salary, vacation time, health insurance, anything. Cars are gone for a lot of people and they probably won't be back. That was something given up. Not good.

Shame on them for allowing the city to violate the contract. Maybe if we stuck together more, like the firefighters, we would be stronger at negotiating time. But as usual police officers are independent thinkers and worried about whats in it for me!!!

Combine a couple of the above ideas.

Exempt on bicycles, and riding thru the more interesting areas of the city? An automatic decoy mission, with the bosses able to exert their exemplary policing skills that meritoriously earned them their exalted ranks.

Added bonus, cut down on the roundbottom whales sitting in their command chairs. They get healthy to continue exorting the troops?

I'm sure thats how it's supposed to work in theory. Bosses have never been known to give themselves early ducks.

This is a point in time where Districts have broken vehicles and there are no pool cars to replace them. The problem could be resolved by placing the take home cars in the patrol fleet.

The condition of the vehicles that the patrol officer is forced to use is such that, I would be absolutely ashamed to make use of a take home car.

In any case, I was under the impression that a bosse's compensation was their salary.

I say take every upper level person, demote them, then put every patrolman's name in a lottery, and randomly fill spots from the top down, no doubt at least you'd have some leaders with common sense and street experience. (I'm not joking about this idea)

exactly! All this "stop, it's state law" bullshit has told people it's okay not to watch where they are walking.

When I was a kid growing up in the city, I was taught to look both ways and wait for an opening in traffic. When it was safe to cross, you crossed, looking both ways beforehand. If it even looked resonably like it might kinda be a close call - you ran or jogged across so as not to cause the motorist to have to slow down much if at all, and to get your ass out of the way of a 3000lb machine that can smash you like a bug.

This bullshit is almost as asinine as people feeling bad about those struck by trains. WATCH WHERE YOU ARE GOING IDIOTS!

I was in traffic court and the judge threw every yield to pedestrian ticket out. He kept asking the accused to turn around and face the crowd for victim identification. The S.A. kept whispering to him it was a sting operation but I don't think the judge understood what he was whispering about. All in all pretty funny. The copper who wrote the tickets just kept smiling and shaking his head while staring at something interesting on the floor. W T F ????? Ha HA HA

Four teens arrested for tagging Chicago Police memorial
August 26, 2009 9:57 AM | No Comments
Four teenagers are in custody after they spray-painted a memorial near Soldier Field honoring slain Chicago police officers and their families, authorities said.

Police arrested three 17-year-olds -- two females and one male -- and a 15-year-old boy, said Chicago News Affairs Officer Michael Fitzpatrick.

The teens were arrested at about 3:05 a.m. after police on routine patrol saw them running from the Gold Star Families Memorial and Park, Fitzpatrick said.

The teens used red spray paint to tag words on the north end of the memorial in the 1400 block of South Museum Campus Drive, just east of Soldier Field on Chicago Park District land, police said. The tagging was neither gang-related nor anti-police, Fitzpatrick said.

8/26/2009 03:50:00 AM

----------------------------------

Thats ok wait unti the city starts getting the overtime bills. The gas and maintenace costs will seem small compared to that. And yes I have a take home car. It's their game and rules we just have to adapt and make them pay.

8/26/2009 01:48:00 AM

1. PO should have got a Sgt
2. PO should have talked to nurse's supervisor
3. PO should have done the DUI with all refusals listed.
4. File complaint against nurse and hospital with hospital accreditation board. They are required to draw the blood in a timely manner. Also AMA!
5. I'm just a Po like you all, but cover your ass first. Simply document the facts!

8/26/2009 09:16:00 AM"

Uh, not exactly.

From another thread:

"Hard job or not, they are required to follow the law...

As stated here, she REFUSED to do a blood draw on a DUI patient, AS REQUIRED BY LAW, and after repeated requests by the arresting officer.

As stated here, she admitted to refusing to do the blood draw because she called the hospital legal office and they had not gotten back to her, (not legal grounds to REFUSE).

As stated here, she was arrested for obstructing a lawful police investigation. She DID obstruct.

As stated here, the nurse was released by a ranking department exempt, (street deputy?), who I blame for her suit.

Did the officer overstep his legal bounds... I don't think so.

Oh, and by the way. THEIR hospital requires numerous City of Chicago & State of Illinois licenses in order to operate legally, which, arguably, makes it OUR hospital.

give me a fucking break! If w/c has no othehr perks, if they work crazy hours and dont put in yellow slips as you claim, then why is it every fucking boss Lt or higher has at least 3000 hours on the books where Im at??? 3000 HOURS MINIMUM!!! The day Captain has over 6500! So are we suppose to believe this clown was such a hard worker in his days before he donned the white shirt that he accrued all this c/u in court? PLEASE!!! W/c spoon feed themselves hours and even sign off on their own slips! So stop acting like you bosses have it so rough that a take home car is the one little perk! I go to court every week, some times 2 or 3 times... I have 10 years on and I have recently just broke over 1000 hours... so go tell your sob story to someone who will buy your bullshit!

-------------------------------
Hey punk, alot of us old timers went to court 2 or 3 times a week, if not more, just at branch court. Some of us were involved in homicide trials, agg batt trials, police shootings trials, which could last days up to weeks. When you work midnights as a detective, it adds up over the years. Add another ten years as a sgt, then five as a lt, you got .30hrs each day, and now .45 hrs each day you work. At the rate you're going, if you get promoted, you too can have thousands of hours.

Dont get me wrong, the guys who stole like your former hero supt Cline with over 10,000 hours and his hand puppet Grau. Go yell at them, they were the throw in a slip whenever your team worked ot crew of yore.

Outstanding play in pointing that out to the citizen/complainant and putting it directly on 42 x/s himself. We do recall something about the rights and DUTIES of pedestrians. throw a nurse into handcuffs.. lets not forget boys and girls they may not be the police but they are on the same team. i always treat doctors and nurses with the upmost respect.

--Maybe the nurse shouldn't have obstructed his investigation. They HAVE to do the blood draw by state law. When a hospital calls to report a dui driver being treated there, you have to jump and process it or you will be taking time. Too bad if she doesn't want to go to a dui trial and testify.
I have been treated well at some hospitals and treated like shit at others.
We may not always like the job we have to do, but we still have to do it. So goes for the nurse.

If a Tact Lt. who is also a Bid Lt. is sent to another District he does not get time and 1/2 like other Bid Lt's. But he has the car so that's the story. Take away the car then the Lt will not only do more work for the same pay he will get less pay. Good luck finding someone to be Tact Lt. They will eliminate the position first. Free up 25 Lt's for W/C duty and not have to make a class of Lt's. Take down the list which will settle the lawsuit by the Sgt's association at the same time. The W/c will be responsible for the Tact team which is in uniform anyway. You think that is going to change? think again. Did you know that the city is not getting anymore unmarked vehicles for patrol either, no more tact cars. The end is near for Tact Lt's and Tact overall. now you have the whole story.

I can cross the street on my own, but some drivers prefer I didn't attempt to cross the street in between the two white lines, on a green light, with a sign flashing the word "walk" or a sign showing a "walking human figure".

I don't text or anything else, while crossing. In fact, sometimes I have to run in between the two white lines, on a green light, with a sign flashing the word "walk" or a sign showing a "walking human figure", just to get across alive.

Visit Peterson & Cicero, Irving Park & Pulaski (with its' no turn on red), Irving Park & Keystone and Irving Park, Cicero & Milwaukee sometime, because it's a daily occurance.
