Wait a Minute....

  • A CTA employee who contracted Legionnaires' disease died over the weekend, officials said today.

Robert Pierce, 37, a CTA electrician who worked most recently at CTA facilities at Midway Airport and at another Southwest Side location, died Sunday at Edward Hospital in Naperville, according to the DuPage County coroner's office.

They said no autopsy will be performed on Pierce, of the 1700 block of Hidden Oaks Court in Plainfield, who died of pneumonia that he developed as a complication to Legionnaires' disease.

Wait a minute...there it is again!
  • They said no autopsy will be performed on Pierce, of the 1700 block of Hidden Oaks Court in Plainfield,

Apparently CTA is not owned/operated by the City of Chicago and as such it's employees aren't required to live in city. That's the same way they get around paying time and a half when we work cta because it's technically not working for the city.

CTA employees have to live in the CTA "service area". They are not required to live in the city.

The rule is relatively recent.

Prior to that they could live ANYWHERE.

The CTA services a large number of suburbs with their bus and train routes.

So endeth the lesson.

"The CPD Accepts state and Federal money - does that mean we can live anywhere like CTA people do?"

I think the requirement makes sense for CPD. If there's a major incident, riot, etc. in the city and a bunch of officers are needed, having them come in to town from the burbs could seriously delay the response.

That said, I still think it should be an option for some officers. Maybe give guys and gals with more than X years on the force the option to live in a neighboring burb.

The requirement for an autopsy is situational. If he was in the hospital or under a physician's care for more than 24 hours with a specific diagnosis there is no requirment.

Less than 24 hours or under suspicious circumstances is different.

Just a little note on this disease.

This CTA guy probably caught it at home. Legionnaires disease is often caused by fecal bacteria being transmitted into the air. It can be deadly and it used to happen quite often on large cruise ships making tons of people sick.

For your own info, you should check where your humidifier/air conditioner condensation drains to. If it drains into your waste stack, that can be a problem that leads to this disease. The fecal bacteria can grow back into your humidifier and then get blown into your home. Make sure your humidifier/air conditioner drains into an open floor drain or a slop sink instead of a waste stack.

Unless that has changed in the last 2 yrs. Even if it has changed people would be grandfather out of the requirement.

He had great respect for our job. Our family went through much suffering in the last few weeks due to his illiness and will continue to suffer due to his lost.
No job is safe we all run the risk of never being with our loved ones again . Our daughter is now a widow at the age of 32. Please get your facts straight before you put them out on this site. Maybe the question should be asked about CTA trying to cover this up. P.O D.Szparkowski (ret)

CTA, Chicago Park District, Chicago Board of Education and the Chicago Housing Authority are seperate municipal corporations, just like the City of Chicago. They are incorporated by the state, just like the City of Chicago. They can raise revenue through taxes, fees and/or fares, just like the City of Chicago. Their officials are not electec, but rather are appointed, usually by the Mayor and/or the Governer. It is an interesting situation, in that each is an entity unto itself, but it is all perfectly legal. The difficulty with them obviously lies in the fact of how the officials are appointed. Clearly the Mayor has a great deal of control over them, which everyone knows. The point is they are in effect equal to the City of Chicago, and to any other city or municipal corporation in the state. Their boards make their own rules, and they are different from entity to entity. The arrangement is really not terribly uncommon in large cities.

SCC was wrong on this point but it brings up an even better one; If the CTA is funded by government money and they get to live outside of the city, why can't fire and police?

CTA isn't 100% funded by the government, neither are the other departments. However, the city does receive money for public safety. If Daley gets a dime from the stimulus package to hire more officers, then those officers should be able to live outside of the city, just like CTA.

One of the city's many double standards, and this might have a chance in court.

As for school employees, the only ones who can live outside the city are the ones who were already living outside the city when the residency rule went into affect. Even if you were already employed by CPS but lived in the city when the rule went into affect, as my sister did, you were stuck in the city.

My sister was new to CPS when the rule went into affect and she's already retired, so I'd think there aren't many who are still able to live elsewhere. BTW, she moved to the burbs immediately upon retiring.
