They "Closed" a Park?

  • Two Chicago police officers and an 18-year-old pedestrian were transported to area hospitals after police All-Terrain Vehicles collided as they were responding to a person with a gun report near the Bud Billiken parade today.

Also, police ordered Washington Park, near 51st Street and King Drive, closed about 3:50 p.m. because of shots fired in the area, although no one was reported wounded in the shootings, according to a Wentworth District officer.

How does someone order a park "closed?" Even at the '68 Convention, efforts to "clear" the parks were mostly futile. In this day and age of cameras and video phones? Let's be realistic - even if we had the manpower to "close" a park, we'd never be allowed to clear it. Daley would never permit it.

In the meantime, a speedy recovery is wished to the officers. And we'll see what pops up in the comment section.

Car 200 had her day in the lime light alright. had us close a public park at 1700 ( 5:00pm for civilians), was not even that crazy! But we did get some OT from this cheap city who lets 300+ floats through Bud Bilikan even though city ordinace permits only 220 for every other parade. Politics so scared of the black vote!!!!! Most floats where about gaining political votes any way!!

She did close it. Thats Commander Genessa Lewis (possibly Lt Lewis on Monday). It really wasnt that bad. I was there and have been there many times before. The shots fired were actually an accidental discharge passing the gun between gangbangers. The magazine was recovered but the offender got away into the crowd.
The park was cleared out, venders were told to leave and families were told the "picnic" portion of the Parade/picnic was hereby cancelled on the orders of Commander Lewis.
Shes either a genius or a former commander. I would say the latter.

The park had to be closed to prevent more officers from getting hurt. The savages can't be confined in a small area.
Kudos to Cmdr Lewis for doing what had to be done - closing the park which immediately stopped the bull shit from continuing.

have worked this parade many times, and this year was by far the best--thank god for those barricades along the parade route. many citizens with their families, were very appreciative with police visibility. a few thugs, but the police did an excellent job keeping everything under control. GREAT decision to close the park, and we did it quick, without any incident. speedy recovery to the injured p.o.'s.

Where was she the real police? All I know is that she made commander out of personnel. I love the order she gave out earlier in the day, " theirs a group of males walking N/B from 51st they need to be arrested, lock them up" OK for what commander? what did you witness them do? Are you going to handle the CR# for me. Boy you don't have a clue.

OT: Henny Penny in 011 just a treat to work for! Blah blah blah she worked in busy districts when she was in patrol blah blah blah blah. (She never said she was on the street, though.) Ignores people who greet her, but God help you if you don't respond as you would be expected to in Kindergarten ("Good morning, ma'am").

This is basic courtesy. I guess she didn't learn that - my kids have better manners (and more knowledge of the streets, most likely!) than she does.

Things were starting to get out of control with savages. Commander Lewis, once she saw the second officer injured made a command decision. One that I am sure she will pay for. But, this is the first time in a long time that I have seen a boss step up and make the hard decision. She decided that the risk to officers and civilians was too great and ordered the park closed. So a big salute to Commander Lewis for having the balls to do what no one else in this department or city would do. Too bad it took a female Commander to show the rest of the department how to have balls. Next step is to cancel this fiasco that they call a parade. Fyi the savages were actually shooting on MLK, on the parade route between 53rd and 54th. Shortly after that a foot chase from the park by GES ending in a UUW pinch. Then the second PO get injured on the PAPV chasing a guy through the park from a man with a gun call. Believe me things were getting out of control and it was about to blow up. Closing the park prevented alot more injuries to officers and shut down all the shootings planned by the shitheads. Why not bring Commander Lewis to 011, we need a commander with balls and some street sense. You can keep the house mouse they sent.

Bullshit! Police operations are driven by existing AND potential conditions, (eg crowds, traffic, weather, location, politics, violence etc.). We, as Police Officers, are given the duty to serve and protect the public and if the temporary closing of a park will further these goals, so be it.

I'm not saying some supervisory input, if practical, shouldn't be sought first, but as long as you can justify the steps you are taking, repercussions SHOULD BE minimal.

That being said, let's see if DC Lewis survives the stupidity of the people making comments such as the one above that I'm responding to.

I never knew there was a limitation to the amount of parade floats.....this must be buried in some sub sub section of Municipal code 10-8-330. Bud Biliken from 1929 has always had Politicians in it, almost rival the St Patrick Day Parade for "hog nogging". Bud Biliken's Parade is considered a traditional event, so I guess an event that celebrating its 80th year might get a little considerations. Why is it each and everytime that something that involves Black people in Chicago, the knee jerky feels that "Its because of the "Black Vote" don't other people in this City vote...would it be safe to say during St Patrick Day its the "White Votes", "Cinco De Mayo" its the Hispanic votes.....I shutter to think what kind of votes are at stake at "LOLLAPALOOZA"

It's really fucked up when we have our own Monday night quarterbacking.
I'm sure King Richard and JFRAUD are grateful she closed the park as she spared them the embarrassment of having to account for an innocent child being shot.
How many more police officers needed to get hurt chasing calls of shots fired b/4 it would be appropriate in the naysayers'minds to close the park. How many police officers and potential innocent citizens did the Cmdr protect by having the courage to close the park.
The parade was long over at 1700 hrs - Officer safety and public safey came first. And yet - officers find it necessary to criticize.
I much rather work for her than those of you who are second guessing her.

"closing the park" happens at every concert on Northerly Island. The wall which is a bit north-east of the venue is an excellent spot to relax and listen to the shows but is closed no matter who the performer is. This is done in the name of "public safety" even on nights that the super mellow bands play.

What an ignorant statement... you're the same asshole that would blame the Police if they had left the park open and someone got hurt or shot. Then you'd be screaming that if the Police had emptied the park, it never would have happened. YOU HAVE NO CLUE what is or is not excessive from a Police perspective!

And by the way, your obvious attempt to make this a racial issue with your "north of Madison" reference is B S since the Commander who ordered the park closed is African-American.

Regarding your comment "So the people who weren't involved in shenanigans had to pay for the few that did", WHAT PLANET ARE YOU FROM? Isn't this how our world functions? Two students shoot up Columbine High School and high schools across the nation bring in metal detectors! Several terrorists hijack planes on 9-11 and domestic travel is changed for everyone.

Its a shame that so few people have so much influence in our daily lives but the minority have always ruined things for the majority.

Why would anyone disagree with closing down Bud Bilikan..
Hot weather, 3 coppers hurt, low man power, alcohol, children lost, gangbanger's banging, EMS flooded with heat stroke related calls unable to manuver through the crowd and pepole being trampled on while running away from gang fights.. sounds like a reciepe for something really bad to happen.
It was a smart move to shut it down.

It took over 20 mins. to get the copper with the broken leg some help. The crowd was blocking the paramedics from coming through. When you have a crowd that the majority hates the police it's not a good idea to get into shit. Imagine if a copper was shot.

Dear scc:
At least someone on this department has the ___ to take matters in their own hands and do what they believe is the right thing to do. Just as long as she stands behind her decision and doesn't back down when given negative feedback. Isn't that what we are supposed to do? We are given a situation with safety being the ultimate goal and once that person believes that safety has been compromised, for whatever reason, then they must make a decision. If another officer or citizen got hurt or crap broke out, then she would have been critized for not taking action sooner, when we were down 2 officers already. Everyone would have said she should have known that it was going to hit the fan based on previous years' nastiness that can only belong to bud. Isn't that what we bitch about all the time? Bosses not doing the right thing, being afraid of making a decision? If I have 2 officers hurt and shots fired, then bye bye bud. Scc, i'm usually behind you but i'm backing off on this one. Dammed if you do, dammed if you don't?

Anyway, more importantly, I was thankfully not at the parade but I don't think your mayor was either, that must have been a mirage. He doesn't come out and play on Sundays, remember? Sundays are his day of rest, the day he spends with his family. He doesn't even show up for St. Jude's. He refuses to pay respect to the men and women of his police department that were murdered, so I seriously doubt he was on a float, in 95 degree heat with a heat index of 105, waving to people he doesn't know on his family day. People, get your eyes checked, and Scc, I love you.

The trouble started. Time to shut it down. I'm sorry we had to send your play cousins home early (long before they could get drunk and start a fight). Get your fat ass out from behind your desk and do some real police work from time to time.....

Oh yeah, you ain't working cause you ain't got no contract....Like you really did work when you did have a contract?

Where was she the real police? All I know is that she made commander out of personnel. I love the order she gave out earlier in the day, " theirs a group of males walking N/B from 51st they need to be arrested, lock them up" OK for what commander? what did you witness them do? Are you going to handle the CR# for me. Boy you don't have a clue.

Um, Cmdr, Lewis spent her first years in 011, on the watch and then tact for many years, thank you. After that she was in narcotics.
If you had been listening to the radio, the group of M/1's was described on the air as "unruly" several times. Perhaps a charge of Disorderly Conduct is appropriate this case. Pay attention! It is you who is clueless.
