Times Are Tough - Share the Pain

Unless of course, you're the aldercreature in charge of Finance, have half a dozen bodyguards making sergeant's pay over an imaginary threat from 20 years ago, and just voted yourself a 6% raise during a recession that the mayor says is causing him to lay off a few thousand people:
  • When times are tough, most people forget about remodeling. If the carpeting has holes and the paint is peeling, they live with it.

Not Chicago's most powerful alderman. Finance Committee Chairman Edward M. Burke (14th) is freshening up his third-floor suite at City Hall.

New carpeting is being installed to eliminate the need to cover holes with duct tape. Walls are being re-painted. A "small number" of chairs and cubicles are being replaced.

Always the paragon of class and virtue Eddie is.

Again, people...why are ANY of you STILL generating any type of revenue for this fuckin' City? The City spits in our collective face, crying poor and unable to offer us a raise or a timely contract. In the same breath however, they're willing to give 25 million to UAL, millions to demolition companies to dismantle sites for a yet-unsecured Olympics bid (wink, wink) and now how much because Mr. Finance Committee's office needs a makeover?

Granted, there will be a certain percentage of company ass-suckers that will perform like circus seals and write parkers, ANOVS, etc. to maintain their precious spot. There will also be a good number of young, impressionable dummies that will bend over for the company because they're afraid of what the big, bad W/C or D/C may do to them. But about 95+% of us can't be fucked with too much; step-up and take one for the team already!

How many of you guys actually laid down and did nothing today to honor Bill Cozzi? I'd guess about only 40-50% of all the big-talkers actually held steadfast to make a point today - the rest caved-in to the W/C's demands to make the index with the promise of an early duck at a later time.

I have been with the CPD for 20 years. Never when the economy was good did the mayor ask to reopen our contract to give us more. We have always fought for or contracts no matter the economy. This prick (Mayor Daley) has gone and made unions redo signed contracts. This should bother you as the city can ignore contracts and do what they want.

Burke has taken a page out of the Glen Tilton handbook.

Glen Tilton the CEO of United has been paid 20 million dollars in compensation over the last five years while United's stock value has gone down 43%.

In lieu of United's bankruptcy and the hit the rank and file United employees have taken in income and pensions, the compensation of Tilton iis appalling.

What the hell is United doing moving it's people in to a high-rise building in a County and City like Chicago with its' obscene taxes and costs of doing business?

United should be moving its' HQ to DuPage county or some other such business friendly county.

United was a once great airline which I now avoid at all costs because in spite of it's past mismanagement it continues to be royally mismanaged and with an airline like Southwest available why settle for less and pay full boat?

The morale of the people at United is on par with the CPD morale you read about on SCC.

The elites in politics and companies like United and Unions like the auto companies and others where work rules dictate it takes one worker to open a tool drawer another worker to remove the tool and another worker to turn the wrench and teachers unions that dictate a Drivers Ed teachers salary and a High School, college level physics teachers salary must be on par at $180k (with no performance testing) is insane and it is sucking us all dry because the cost and inefficiency of it all is baked in to our real estate taxes, sales taxes and the price of many of the things we buy.

What one side gives in value should be reciprocated in equal value by the other side in a transaction without an intermediary increasing the cost of doing business and creating inefficiencies.

There is a post floating around about a supposed dishonorable discharge from the army of Patrick Daley, son of Shortshanks.

I hadn't read anything about this elsewhere. I would think this would be news. After all, the whole army enlistment thing was meant to polish up the younger Daley's resume in preparation for an eventual entry into, uh, ready for this... Chicago politics!

A coveted appointment to West Point was squandered on Patrick Daley already.

In 1993 US Rep Bill Lipinski made only one of his several possible nominations to the prestigious US Military Academy at West Point.

And who got this one and only nomination to West Point, a nomination that was guaranteed to be followed by appointment since it was the Congressman's only nomination that year?

None other than Patrick Daley, the Mayoral son.

Patrick Daley then proceeded to fail miserably at West Point and dropped out after 14 months. Then he got back to Chicago and drinking and getting himself involved in secret deals, a chip off the old block you know.

Don't believe for a second that the younger Daley's enlistment in the Army a few years ago was anything other than an attempt to put some spats on the pig and clean up Patrick Daley's service record for possible future political use.

I can think of little worse for this city than the prospect of another generation of evil and corruption being forced upon the City of Chicago by another bastard named Daley.

If anyone has anything about a supposed DD from the Army for Patrick Daley, please post it for all to read.

....And yet, the people still vote them into office. The only way I see to get legitimate and honest elected officials is to move far away from this state. Whoever keeps posting that "Retirement is the goal", you sir are absolutely correct. However, I will add "Leaving this corrupt state" to that goal. I know our numbers, 13,500 (even if just on paper) isn't much of a voting block, it's just a drop in the bucket. The vast majority of voters in this city/state will still elect the same criminals into office time and time again like it's just ingrained in them to do so. This is occupied territory where no other point of view is tolerated, hell I'm surprised that we aren't required to carry a little "Red book" around with us all the time to remind us who our leaders are. Government is not supposed to work this way but people here don't know what freedom is. They know what clout, nepotism, cronyism, patronage, and (our favorite) merit is. This is all corruption and arrogance. I do hold out hope that the rest of America isn't going this way and there is a place to get to once I retire, a place far away from here.

I would hope that the media would look into how many red light camera citations were issued to the vehicles driven by the bodyguards for the Mayor, City Treasurer, and Alderman Burke.

These vehicles are licensed to the Police Department and seeing they are part of the public safety fleet the citations are automatically non-suited.

WTF? This is beyond an incredible coincidence. The article is correct in saying that more and more of Daley's family, friends and cronies are going to benefit substantially if Chicago gets the Olympics.

Fitgerald were the hell are you? Michael Scott, as the article states, "owns Michael Scott & Associates, a real estate development and investment firm. He also serves as president of the Chicago Board of Education."

The article goes on to say that as President of the Board of Education, he "encouraged" all school principles to come up with plans to promote the Olympic bid in their individual schools. Many teachers and union officials stated at the time that they complied because Scott, "tactics were heavy-handed and they feared retaliation if they did not support Daley's quest for the Games."

Can you say CONFLICT OF INTEREST? I guess Mr. Scott did not fill out his ETHICS form that every city employee has to file.

This just sickened me. How can we live in a democratic society and allow this to even continue.

Mayor Richard Daley today declined to answer questions about a Tribune story on how a member of his Olympic bid team arranged to develop city-owned land near a park that would be transformed for the 2016 Summer Games, potentially positioning himself to cash in if the Games come here.

Developer Michael Scott Sr., an early member of the mayor's Olympic committee, leads a group planning a residential and commercial project on lots kitty-corner from the proposed Douglas Park sporting venues, a location where land values could jump if the city gets the Olympics.

The mayor's refusal to talk about Scott's Douglas Park project came at a Northwest Side CTA station where he discussed the city's plan for construction projects in the coming years. Daley's public schedule indicated he would only be taking questions on that topic today, but a throng of reporters showed up and asked him about Scott's project.

Daley, however, said he would only be taking questions on the city's construction plans.

"I'm sorry I can't answer questions every day. Every day, I do it enough," Daley said.

Asked by a Tribune reporter when he would be available to talk about Scott's project, Daley said the question insulted him.

"Oh, I do it everyday, you've been with me every day. Never insult me with that question," Daley said. "You're insulting me because every day I'm here, you're never here. And don't print that, so I know you'll print it."

Daley's press staff then ended the news conference.

Ok, so I’m browsing on the city’s purchasing website and I run across a weird contract. They hired a firm from Georgia, to develop a broadband master plan. This same firm had a contract the year before to develop a citywide wifi plan. We know how that went. Published info shows they’ve made over 300K for these two deals. Then there are the subs that have been dealt their bones that are city travel firms. Here’s the kicker and the specification that made me go, WTF? The contract states that it is for a broadband master plan for the city of Chicago. The background section states that the services are to be used to assist in 2008 federal lobbying regarding the city’s 2016 Olympics bid and other city projects involving multiple departments, such as technology based economic development. Another example of paying for something we don't have and may not get, oh yes, and the taxpayers won't have to pay.

It should be surprising and big news here in Chicago if true.

Dishonorable discharge from the Army is an extreme measure only taken for a grave offense, such as cowardice, murder, sabotage, or espionage, desertion, sexual assault.

All pay and benefits are permanently lost and all medals and honors are revoked.

A Dishonorable Discharge (DD) is a punitive discharge rather than an administrative discharge. It can only be handed down to an enlisted member by a General Court-Martial. Dishonorable discharges are handed down for what the military considers the most dishonorable of conduct. This type of discharge may be rendered only by conviction at a general court-martial for serious offenses

With this characterization of service, all veterans' benefits are lost, regardless of any past honorable service. This type of discharge is universally regarded as shameful, and the social stigma attached to it makes it very difficult to obtain gainful post-service employment. Additionally, Federal Law prohibits ownership of firearms from those who have been discharged dishonorably.

In some cases, a person who receives a dishonorable discharge may also forfeit their right to vote on conviction.

However, a DD probably wouldn't prevent someone running for elective office in Chicago where the only shame is in losing an election.
