No Foot Chases

  • (Wellford, SC)—The Mayor of Wellford is defending her policy which bans police officers in that city from chasing suspects. Sallie Peake says the policy also includes vehicle chases along with pursuits on foot.

A memo issued on September 2nd from Peake to all Wellford officers reads:

“As of this date, there are to be no more foot chases when a suspect runs. I do not want anyone chasing after any suspects whatsoever.“

WSPA first reported the mandate on Wednesday after an anonymous citizen faxed a copy of the memo to our newsroom. Peake was out of town and unavailable for comment. On Friday, reporter Chris Cato caught up with her in her office and questioned her about the origin of the policy. Peake says she issued the mandate because several officers have been injured during chases, driving up insurance costs for the town.

“The officers are costing us more money on insurance than most citizens here in the city of Wellford are even earning,“ says Peake.
We're sure Daley is taking notes. This is a potential savings of billions more for the Olympic dream!

So, not only will costs to the city be reduced in terms of fewer injury/medical claims, but there should be fewer medical days lost on the injured officers AND potentially a refusal to cover medical costs for injuries incurred as a result of chasing bad guys IN VIOLATION OF THE ORDER not to chase... We're screwed if this practice becomes popular!

I'll start right now! I will not do any more foot chases.... oh, wait! I already started that one in the 90's. Ok I will no longer do any more treason arrests. Sorry, I forgot, I already am not doing any more arrests. Mr. Mayor, I'm sure I can think of something I can stop doing to save you money.

There already exists such a policy on my beat. I don't chase anybody, either on foot or by auto. This has cut the number of chase related injuries and resulting lawsuits down to zero. And I have not missed one day of work due to a chase related injury or cost the City any money at all.

In addition, the Circuit Court and Cook County Sheriff and Cook County Jail have all saved by not having to house an arrestee while waiting for his nolle prosse or SOL.

And I sleep better knowing I don't have to go down to that court just to hear what a liar and bad guy I am for chasing poor little alleged offender.

This also reduces the workload of the hardworking folks over at The Innocence Project so that they may concentrate on emptying our prisons of innocent people nationwide.

It is better all the way around. I work a small beat and they are soon out of my beat anyway.

Anyone know how that contract is coming along?

I have an even better idea. Let's just discontinue all police departments and lay off all police officers. Just think how much money we will save! Payrolls, cars, equipment, police stations, lock ups, pensions, civil rights suits we'll save enough to have the Olympics every four years. Who said we need the thin blue line to keep the predators from victimizing the average citizen? The average citizen nowadays has more feelings for the predators than they do for the police any way. The ACLU and the bottom feeding lawyers who sue the police can use the spare time they will have, since they won't have the police to focus on, to bring suit against those who break the law. Oh no, I guess they can't do that because it would be a conflict of interest since they only represent those who break the law.
Well, the point is, the bad guys and their radical supporters, including the President of the USA, have won. The majority of the people in this country are good people but they have done nothing as the lunatic fringe have fought and succeeded in getting their way. As the old saying goes, the only thing necessary for evil to flourish is for good men to do nothing.
There are really only two solutions. Stand up and fight to take this country back or find another country. It's your choice since you are good men and women.

Wait until Her Honor the Mayor, Sallie Peake of Wellford, SC, has to start paying the legal bills for the inevitable lawsuits against her and her city for failing to protect the citizens.

This woman is in WAY over her head and is making policy in areas where she has no knowledge. It is not uncommon in small towns like this, for the politicians to be complete rubes.

She is one big lawsuit away from bankrupting her city and herself standing in the unemployment line.

hmmm let's think about this for a moment . . . .

no foot chases means: no IODs, no arrests, no court time, no extensions of tours, no CR numbers, no lawsuits, no punitive damages, CRIME STATS go way up because when word gets out no one will stop for the police, crime stats go up, daley gets blamed, j-fed gets blamed, daley gets elected out of office as a backlash, no olympics, screwed up olympics if they do come.

sounds good to me. it may hurt the working police who love and need the overtime, but if we try it for awhile, the citizenry will cry for us to work again. THEN we ask for and get the raises we deserve.

really, we should try that. just remember to protect yourself and your family foremost. let the rest get what they ask for.

Let's face it, the criminals know our general orders. Cars take off on us all the time and once it reaches high speeds, we (i.e. whoever is chasing after the bad guy) is supposed to terminate the chase. That responsibility rests on our shoulders and God forbid if a civilian gets hurt and you can bet that YOU will be sued. Indemnification is only applicable if you follow department orders boys and girls.

So the moral of the story, if you get into a car chase, go after and pursue the bad guy, but once it gets dangerous, terminate it ASAP.

It sucks and I hate it. But I have to watch out for my bank account, house that is paid off, pension and the prospect of losing my job.

Society has decided this is the police they want and this is the police they will get. Maybe citizens will wake up and realize they need to support the police.

Come to Chicago Sallie. The combination of JFeds complete inability to evalute personnell and Daleys corrupt and cynical pandering to reverends etc and his petty hatred of the police are made to order for you. Maybe you could replace Jfed to destroy anything that is left of the department when he is done.

I agree, I've said this for a long time. Foot chases for dope should be abolished. I've seen broken ankles., blown out knees, broken hands, wrists and dislocated shoulders (going over fences) and serious car crashes from officers responding to help. Don't get me wrong; violent crimes, guns, etc. it's on. But for a $75 court date after taxes for dope, it's not worth the health of any of us. I understand there's a lot of money in dope court, especially now that felony dope can be done at ur area branch, but to me it's not worth it. Going to 26/Cal for a pack sucked. Who cares about the city losing money it's injuries that last a lifetime that matter. Stay safe.

O.T. Rumor from a source at HQ that Commander J.O. from Narcotics is getting moved/dumped for being involved in a bad search warrant that was done last year and was caught on camera (aired on several news networks). Allegedly Commander J.O.(Lt. at time) who was the highest ranking CPD member on scene and orchestrated the warrant was also all over the camera (until it was pointed away). Supposedly, the 10 million dollar federal law suit has the Mayor's ass steaming and JFED's ass puckered.

Sorry all you eager-beaver tac guys with your foot chases with car chase backup going after a street rat with 3 dime-bag rocks in his pocket. The fun is over. Also every one knows about the end-of-the-chase payback.

Every decision cities make regarding police polices nowadays are made in the light of lawsuits and money.

The message I get:

Unless the perp did something for which you can shoot him, there is no point in chasing him.

And if he did something for which you can shoot him, there is no point in chasing him.
