Unfortunately, we think Shaved called this one 100% accurately:
- President Obama declares the SWINE FLU a national emergency - To get the public's attention off all his failures.... EVERYBODY, LOOK OVER HERE INSTEAD! SWINE FLU IS A NATIONAL EMERGENCY! Even though more people will die fire ant bites than the swine flu.
It's almost like he took lessons from Shortshanks in the art of distraction. Oh wait, he did.
- The clinics are set up at six City College locations, and health officials are cautioning that the supply is more limited than they had hoped and that it would be reserved only for high-risk population groups.
Each site has about 1,500 doses and officials will start turning away people once they reach that number.
At the West Side Technical Institute, 2800 S. Western Ave., the line numbered more than 600 at 9:30 a.m. People inside the gymnasium were filling out paperwork as a woman in an orange vest called out numbers in English and Spanish.
So about 9,000 doses for a city of 2 million? And they aren't even screening for the weak, infirm, juvenile or high risk. They're just giving them out on a "first-come, first-serve" basis. Someone said Daley got his? Thank goodness he's safe!

The flu vaccine is given out on a priority basis (That's what they say) The first doses are supposed to go to pregnant women and kids. CPD is not even held to the same priorty as CFD, as fire are considered 'medical first responders". So fire gets theres before we get ours. In all honesty, we will not get our vaccines before the flu hits. If you have young ones and want the vaccine for them, I'd take them to a clinic before waiting for the Dept.

We've been talking about this all week at work. I work with offenders and high risk people. The fucking health department USED to give us free vaccines BECAUSE we work with the public but they stopped that. Now, after we hear that they are distributing the vaccine through the city colleges everyone hit the ceiling. Can you tell me why every broke ass, no job, link card using, welfare mama is going to get a vaccine when they don't do a fucking thing all year? Why isn't it being distributed to people who have to work? And another little well known secret we heard about last year, there are "health programs" through the county that will service patients for nothing. Nothing and without ruling out the patient having other insurance or even living in Cook Co.

I guarantee this is going to be a huge political issue for local and national government. I had the swine flu, and trust me, it is much worse than the regular flu. TamaFlu will only work if you use the medicine in the first 48 hours of symptoms, and since the Swine Flu starts out with the same symptoms as the regular flu, most poeple will not take the medicine quick enough.
This is something to take seriously and the City should give us the shots first.

Neither you nor Shaved are anywhere close to 100% correct; you're part of the problem, sensationalizing the decision like this. I agree with you that the whole swine flu thing has been blown way out of proportion, but you're not helping at all.
Declaring H1N1 as a national emergency just makes it easier for hospitals to execute emergency or disaster plans so that they can quickly move patients to alternative facilities if it becomes necessary. It doesn't necessarily mean that anything is getting worse, and it has nothing to do with vaccine shortages - it's an administrative move only.

It's not just the "society do nothings" who are lining up for the free shots. It's people with insurance whose own doctors don't have the vaccine yet who are getting the shots.
This is going to backfire. There will be a run on the Hospitals, like the Banks in the depression, when people take their entire families to the ER for treatment and vaccines, in a panic. It will look ugly and it probably won't even start here, but in some part of the country and then snowball. They should be playing this flu season down, instead of declaring an emergency and "oh by the way, we don't have anywhere near enough of the vaccine for all of you." Poorly played so far in Washington.

A recent news report related that unlike other strains of the flu, it IS YOUNG patients that are contracting this disease and dieing rather than middle aged and elderly ones.
It seems that older people have some resistance to swine flu. I clearly recall in the 1960's an epidemic called the SWINE FLU. Perhaps it was similar enough to this strain that those who lived through that still have some immunity.
I always get flu shots, the only problem I ever had is with the very first one I ever had and I must have gotten that shot from Dr. Louis Pasteur.
Stay safe, and healthy, a good suggestion is only get it if you are well rested and feeling good.
Declaring swine flu a national emergency will allow hospitals to move treatment areas offsite to expedite that treatment and protect the non-infected. If you go to an ER with a broken arm do you really want to be surrounded by people who have H1N1? Sheesh.

Police are first responders however most of us from the stress of the job and bad diets have underlined health problems I'm sure. But most important I'm not to comfortable getting the shot because there is not much research on if they can come up with a vaccine over night for a deadly flu virus that keeps changing then they can do it for HIV that's a virus too that keeps changing. I'm not so sure about this one.... I'm kinda glad they haven't offered it to us yet I haven't made up my mind from what I have read I'm not convinced. Just food for thought

My wife had the swine flu. I had the swine flu. A few friends of ours had it. Guess what? It sucks, but it's nothing. I'd rather have this than have the stomach flu where you're barfing and shitting your brains out for a week. This is just bad fatigue, a little bit of a fever, and some nasal congestion. Some people it hits hard, others think it's just a bad cold. NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT. The yearly flu probably kills tens of thousands of people every year, this will be about the same.

well I guess you don't work the streets idiot. Every call the cfd goes on in my district we also go it's called assist CFD. So are we immune to it? It is airborne, I don't think the back seat of a squad is isolation. My old partner was exposed to TB a few years back because an arrestee we had passed it on to him. If he did not tell us he had it we would have never known and been tested. So their logic and yours is bullshit. We should be in the same priority group. But since we are not I guess the city could function without the police, let the fire department handle it. I plan on getting H1N1 Oct 31 weekend. I need a good rest anyway, bring on the medical check I will answer the door in my robe and cough in your face.
We are not in the same priority group as CFD or other city agencies such as OEMC so I guess the city can get along without us if we get sick. What the hell did I fill out that medical form last year for, you know the one where you put your family info on so if their is an epidemic you will get the necessary medication or vaccine? Wow OEMC can dispatch to my empty beat car thei weekend.
And all our union has on the board is news about a ski trip. Where the hell is my vaccine. And for those of you who think it is bullshit one guy from my parrish died last week and another was in the hospital for a week. He told me that they had 6 people on his floor with the same thing. The H1N1 ended up bringing on phenemonia which is what killed the other guy I was talking about. Both tested positive for H1N1.
If you don't want the vaccine fine don't take it but I think we should all be offered it. This is a direct diss by the Mayor and City. They in essence are saying fuck the Police they are not important enuff. That's the way I see it so I am going to go about my job a whole lot differently after this, that I can promise.
I work at one of the city colleges and was there Saturday. What a joke. The paper says those high risk were to get it first, but they were giving it out to anybody.
People are stupid. They figured since the program was to run from 0900-1400, they could show up at 1300 and get a shot.
The best part? Lots and lots of people who could obviously afford to pay for a shot, showed up - Women with $1000 double wide strollers, Ugg boots, well dresses, kids with multiple video games, etc.
And, they were the biggest whinners. "You mean I have to wait in line for 2 hours with my kids to get a number and then wait another 2 hours to get the shots?" "Why don't you have something to keep my kids entertained?" "Why isn't there anything for us to eat while we wait?"
One chick was freaking out because she, "this is the 4th site I've been too and the others were out and I have health problems and really need to get this shot so I don't get sick you just don't understand I'm terrified and is it ok if I just wait in line and see if they have any leftover? Please?"
The only health problems she had were in her head. I thought she was going to have a nervous breakdown.
Not shot for me. Just harsh words & a quick shot in the shins if you come near me and are coughing like you have TB.
There seems to be a lot of strange bullshit going on, no I'm saying the typical UFO shit stories either. This administration seems to be aiming the bus for the biggest cliff, printing money so fast you can watch it's value drop like a rock, it also seems everytime something important comes up there's a crisis, this Swine Flu was known about last year, the bullshit about how serious it'll get is all you here about yet theyve known it was coming since last year...
What's really sad is they think the people are beliving all their tall tales... mean while for some strange reason gun stores can't keep the ammo on the shelf and weapon sales are right along with it... maybe thats just another illusion
Whether you believe this is a distraction or not, get the shot. 900 kids at Saint Charles East aren't tools of Barry O's! Protect yourselves and your families first, especially the Pregnant ones.

TAMAFLU is not the H1N1 variant currently proscribed…but then again, considering your spelling, I didn’t expect you to keep up with the latest news…speaking of news…yes, a lady became VERY ill…she didn’t realize she was PREGNANT, which increases the risk of contracting the H1N1 Flu…but does not mean it will be fatal…only that the effects will be more severe.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Pentagon will offer the H1N1 vaccination to detainees at the U.S. facility at Guantanamo Bay, officials there said Friday.
The Pentagon made the decision based on U.S. government assessments that people held in detention facilities are at high risk for the pandemic, said Maj. Diana R. Haynie, a spokeswoman for Joint Task Force Guantanamo Bay, which is in charge of holding the suspected terrorists.
"Detainees at JTF Guantanamo are considered to be at higher risk and therefore they will be offered the H1N1 vaccination," Haynie said.
