$30 per Dozen Donuts?

No wonder conventions are fleeing (or have fled) the city - did you catch these prices? Someone posted the McCormick Place Catering Menu in our comment section.
  • Quaker Chewy Granola Bars (10) - $18
  • Breakfast Bagels - $38.70 per dozen
  • Assorted Miniature Hershey Chocolates - $24 per pound
Even a half-pint of milk (tiny carton) is $2.25, which as a helpful reader pointed out, equals $36 per gallon.

And the truly amazing part? At the bottom of just about every page, those words that make you just want to run out and reserve next years convention spot far away from here:
  • Prices do not include 21% service charge and applicable sales taxes
21% plus something like an 11% sales tax. Someone better have plans for all that empty space.

Gotta love what unions have done for common sense. Is the McCormick Place catering staff part of the same SEIU that is perpetually swinging from Obama's crooked balls? Assuming, of course, that Jesse Jackson hasn't yet cut them off...

My friend used to work at a medical manufacturing company on the east coast. He was in charge of organizing his company's booth at the RSNA (Radiologic Society of North America)show at McCormick Place.

He told me of walking from his cab into the place pulling behind him a small piece of luggage with build in wheels and handle (like you see in the airports). He had his briefcase and laptop stacked on top of it.

As he was going into the building a union thug and several laborers began to surround him to prevent his entry with his things "citing union rules".

Fast forward..several hours later, one guy finally arrives at his booth, pulling said luggage behind him. Drops it it the middle of the floor and hands him a bill for several hundred dollars.

He soon discovered they were worse than the TSAs at the airports. They opened it up and all his brochures were in disarray.

F'ing thieves and bums!

His company no longer participates in any Chicago trade shows!

Welcome to the "New" Detroit!

Earlier this year, Ohio-based GSSP Enterprises Inc. agreed to slash its cadaver removal prices by 25 percent — from $915-a-body to $690 — under pressure from the City Council’s most powerful alderman Ed Burke.

Dallas pays $94 a body. San Antonio pays $125 per cadaver. The Cook County Sheriff's Police pays $250-per-body.

2004, GSSP signed a contract with Chicago that called for the company to remove 7,000 bodies each year at a cost of $200-per-cadaver.

The contract was re-bid several times after the company complained that it was losing money on the deal because Chicago grossly over-estimated the number of dead bodies. When a new contract was finally awarded, City Hall agreed to a 335 percent increase — to $915-per-body. That remained the price until this year’s price cut.

Burke has branded the dead body controversy “the most disgraceful example of bureaucratic bungling, bureaucratic finger-pointing and bureaucratic ignorance” he has encountered in 40 years on the City Council.

“It makes people want to look at other contracts to see how many other examples there are,” he said in late September.

Ok Ed, open up the books, you voted for it........lets take a look.

Isn't it standard practice for a company to give a discount for providing greater quantities? If they bid $200 per body based on 7000 bodies, shouldn't the price go down (per body) if there are say 14000 bodies....NOT UP.

I forgot, this is Daley's Chicago, bodies cost more here than in un-incorporated Cook Cty.($250.00) and the spread of the money is larger:

Actual cost of removal (gas-salaries) $75.00
Doing business with Chicago tax $400.00
Aldermanic service charge $400.00
Corp Profit $300.00

Total Charge (Old cost) $915.00
____________________________________________________
New price quote: per body

Actual cost of removal (gas-salaries) $75.00
Doing business with Chicago tax $280.00
Aldermanic service charge(amended) $280.00
Corp profit $55.00

Total cost (new quote) $690.00

It still smells..................

You are going to kill the side jobs for most of CFD. CFD makes up a majority of the (union card carrying) carpenters and electricians at McCormick Place. Just don't publish the overtime rates they charge for "tear down."

People from the conventions get robbed blind by the city, from their "service charges" and hotel and entertainment taxes to the price gouging by the food services and unions AND by thieves throughout the buildings.

Wallets, purses, laptops, supplies and cases of products disappear around the booths and loading docks all the time. Most of these cartage thefts and pickpocket incidents are never even investigated either, as "Security" takes reports, but DO NOT call in the CPD unless it is absolutely necessary. Unless the conventioneer actually calls the police themselves, no official record exists... No report, No crime problem!

This sounds like a self-correcting problem. When the costs get too high for convention organizers to accept, they will take their business elsewhwere (e.g. Vegas or Orlando). MPEA will then have two choices: either lower prices to attract conventions or see Chicago cease to be a convention destination.

For the person that posted the comment refering to Ohio-based GSSP Enterprises Inc. charging as much as they do in Chicago when it is cheaper everywhere else only seems correct. It should cost more to remove the dead body here then elsewhere. You need to remember that quite a few of them are still young and the BRAIN still hasn't been used. making it a more valueable commodity

==================================

I bet you are wrong. I bet it is a lot less then you think. There is very little work down there and the workers that are down there are ones that are available every day. The side jobs have pretty much dried up for most of them. Trust me, I would know.

Everybody always blaming the unions.Although some of the rules that exhibitors have 2 deal with in using union workers are pretty bad only about 10% of the cost is labor related. A worker gets $37 an hour but the in house company charges $80 to the exhibitor.Mccormick charges the most for square footage the any other place in the country. They were even thinking of charging for the air over a booth in case u wanted to hang something. The price of food and coffee is out of this world.Hotels jack up there prices. And when the show ends the exhibitors try to sell there goods because it cost soo much to pack and send the stuff back ,but then tell the boss that most was stolen by the unions.I ve worked there for many years and have seen it happen. So don t always blame the unions dear Mayor
