And it's not just in Illinois. Doctors and hospitals from all over the Midwest are telling patients without insurance to go to Stroger. - In 2008, 26,000 patients came from the Collar Counties; 25,000 were from downstate counties; 1,800 came from Indiana; and 5,200 were from other areas.
$50 million worth of subsidizing the downtrodden of other counties and other states. $50 million could have saved the Toddler a lot of heartache in the media and in his own Board Meetings. Hell, you save $50 million in these times and you're on your way to re-election in a landslide. As it is, every idiot commissioner who isn't raising a stink about this deserves to lose their jobs.

For the sake of the patients, well I can't blame them. Think about the tax money pulled from state and federal funds that help support the county hospitals? Mind you that most of the traveling patients don't pay the taxes, but the hospitals are supported by more than the Crook County system. I'm just saying.....
How many came from other countries?

So what's wrong with sending them back where they came from?
Cook County needs to make a big effort to let all of the other hospitals, clinics, medical practices, medical associations, and M.D.'s know, that effective 01 Jan 10, there will be NO treatment of any kind provided for non-residents of Cook County and refer them back to their referring medical provider.
Let the suburban and county hospitals in other counties step up and handle their own water. And some of these other areas are way wealthier than we are here in Cook County. I'm sick and tired of sooo many people sucking the life out of my paycheck.
No wonder the Toddler needs to keep that 1/2 penny county tax in the budget! So we can take care of everybody who refuses to take reponsibility for their own life. Fuck 'em. Turn them away. Nobody ever wants to give me anything for free.
I've GOT insurance and when I see a doctor, my insurance card is more important to these jags than whatever health issue I may have. It should be no different for anyone else. If they don't like it they can go back to Mexico or get a job that doesn't include illegal activity and NO benefits!
There is no accountability whatsoever with proof of residency. Little known fact, Cook County has "secret" health insurance packages that will be given to anyone who calls a certain number and applies. You don't have to prove you have no insurance or like in Cook County.

A BIG part of the problem exists within the system itself. I know of one case where an employee of the city health clinic is fronting for dozens of illegals, some of whom have since moved away from the city but still return to get free city health services.
In fact, some of these people actually live in Mexico, and either return here to get their free 3 month prescriptions for themselves and all of their children, or they have relatives pick them up and ship them to Mexico. wtf?
And I'm sure none of the employees pocket a box of syringes or band-aids or a bottle of asprin or cough medicine every day, because they are all toddler's relatives and they wouldn't steal anything, right?

You will never get any meaningful change with the democrats in power in cook county and the city. They know that by letting these folks from outside the county into the health system, it increases their power and adds jobs. If you compare county hospital with a private hospital, side by side, you will see the inflated diffence in costs for everything.

Why don't they bill the the counties that these patients reside in? How many are illegal? Cook County taxpayers should not be subsidizing everyone on this earth who can't afford healthcare.

every person treated at any hospital should be fingerprinted and information given to collection agencies. alot of people have jobs , money , cars , housing from illegal activities

I have no doubt many of these are in the country illegally. But Daley and the Democratic boys have made it so that we can't ask that question. It would be nice to send a bill to the Mexican government for services rendered.

I have been told stories that illegals fly into O'hare field from all over the world. Get in a cab, and go straight to Cook County Hospital.

This is a common problem in all county / safety net hospitals across the country. There is a rule called EMTALA that says you have to treat patients that are significantly at risk of dying. But - that is it. You can legally turn patients away. It is typically the choice of the providers to not do this due to the very negative press. Anyone who thinks that there isn't universal healthcare today is fooling themselves. There will be no real change in delivery of care in this country if this bill passes. Let's call it exactly what it is - a huge tax increase.
have you ever been in Stroger??? the line to be seen by the initial nurse (triage) looks like a line at Disney World..zigzagging back and forth with hundreds in line and Im sure it is like that every day...
I know a guy who lives in Lake County who had several surgeries at Cook County hosptials at government expense but as I understand it, it is charged back to Lake County somehow.
Look at the big raises for CC employees. Makes me sick.
Stroger is supposed to bill the other counties for service to their residents. But it has been brought out in the papers that Stroger is way behind in billing and collecting......

When people talk about "illegals", 9 out of 10 times they are referring to Mexican Nationals. Ok, fine. Has anyone ever looked into how the Mexican Government handles this on their soil? I'm sure Mexico has their share of illegals.
Do the hospitals in Mexico City welcome illegals with open arms? Can an illegal walk into one of their hospitals with no form of payment and still expect to be treated?
Do Mexican officials champion the rights of illegals in their cities? Their country?
This would make one hell of a story for either Republicans or Democrats. Why hasn't someone in the media investigated this?

Deep down I don't believe anyone is about to let sick people die because of lack of funds. The fact is these folks do get treated when necessary, but not very conveniently. That is the crux of the problem with the Obama etal health care ploy. The claim of 36 or 47 million without care just isn't true. In the US nearly everyone that needs care gets it, maybe not conveniently, thus the long lines a County. People do get treated in time, and that is as it should be. I believe when other conties ship patients to Cook County, they are expected to pay the bill. I also suspect that Cook County's billing is slow, to be kind.
Easy fix for this problem!
Check the peoples I.D. if it doesn't have a Cook county address then tell the people sorry go back to Dupage county for help and escort them out of the hospital.
Then again this county has a bunch of balless, liberal suck asses!

Some hospitals won't even make people walk across a parking lot to get to a clinic. Torte reform isn't in any health care bill. Under Nancy's bill we'll be sending people who don't buy health insurance to prison for 5 years. Get ready for all those jails for the amish and the mennonites. And oh yeah under democrat rule health care is a right don'cha know.

Thank god a Lt of Police is running for President of Cook County Board because we all know they are of the highest integrity and beyond reproach. They never, well, not lately anyway, caught a Lt. doing anything wrong. That will sure attract the voters by droves, a chicago police officer is running, he will take care of your money all right. Trust him, and/or her.
