- Some Chicago Public School students are absent from the classroom for 95 days. That's more than half the school year. CBS 2 [...] has been crunching those unbelievable numbers, and they are staggering.
CBS 2 looked into neighborhood schools. It seems Marshall High on Chicago's West Side posted some of the worst attendance numbers. In 2008, the average days absent per student totaled 95. It was 75 at Harper, 72 at Robeson and 71 at Clemente...
So how many of these brilliant scholars are being counted on the first day of school so Daley Inc. can get all sorts of Title I money and then the kids are never seen or heard from again...that is, until they're gunned down. Suddenly, they're "another Chicago Public School casualty" that is used to smack the Police around for not doing enough to "save this poor child."
Once again, we're going to point to the community and the lack of family structure as the beginnings of this failure. The schools merely have bad material to work with, no matter how many pretty charts Huberman comes up with. He did the same thing with the CPD and it had the exact same effect on crime that it's having on the CPS - zero.

What percentage of Catholic school kids go to school every day?
Remember on the Wire when the schools would hire bangers to round up kids for the first day to get the funding? That never happens here that was just a TV show.
simple...if you dont go to school. your ass gets shipped directly into the military. a special branch where you cant wash out of. a mean ass sergeant up your ass 24/7. to stop the bullshitters...cut off their bullshit! stop candyassing around and get serious.

You are right on. Read Ann Coulter's book Guilty. She states that 80% of all inmates in the system come from single parent (mothers only) homes.

I went to Catholic school. I might have missed 3 days in four years of high school. Maybe less than that.
My kids go to school everyday.My kids study and do their homework.My kids get good grades.My kids are involved in outside activities.My kids are in bed at a decent hour.My kids get lots of love.
Somehow all that seems so normal.
But the parents of the 17 students who DO go to a school will march and protest to keep it open.

On that topic, Here's an idea, why don't you start one that all citizens would not hesitate to sign? I am sure you could get at least a million signatures. I know a lot of people in this city would be for signing a referendum that prevents a sitting mayor to sell off revenue assets of our city, such as our airports and water systems, when those sales will affect the economy of this city for DECADES after the prick is gone.
Just heard the parking meter company is making a million a day. If this city is so broke why are we selling off such stellar assets so someone else can make the million a day? This is shortsighted at best. Criminal at worst.
This makes me think that the mayor is setting this city up to fall, with an attitude of "If I can't run this city, no one else will be able to" attitude.
The citizens of this city should be able to VOTE on whether our assets are sold. After all we are the ones who keep this city awash in cash.
Help out SCC. Start a referendum on this for the future of this city.

With the average number of days missing class for these high school citizens approaching 80, that means that most students are not present 1/2 of the school year. There is little wonder why when they graduate, if they do, they are unprepared for college or for work or for any technical training. I was watching the new TV series last night on cable about Cook County Jail. There is no saving some of these people. It is better for the safety of society that they stay locked up for the rest of their lives. What is going on here is something that the race baiting pastors and politicians just do not want to admit; bad behavior is learned behavior and these kids have no family structure or role models to learn good behavior and good social norms. There needs to be a national discussion, not on race issues, but on the black and hispanic family structure or lack of it and what to do about it.
They even let kids who live outside the city into schools to boost attendance.
The Sad thing is that the Public school curriculum is, when learned properly, actually tougher in some respects then the Catholic School curriculum. The problem is that the parents of these kids JDGAF and blame everyone but themselves and their little babies. I know many Public school teachers who really want to teach but, like us, are beaten down when they try and do their job. The CPS higher ups are afraid to put the blame where it belongs. If you look at public magnet schools or public schools in neighborhoods where the parents care the kids do well and learn. When you have entire communities who cannot accept responsibility and feel that they are owed everything you will get these type of attendance numbers. You can throw all the money and set up all the programs you want, in the end nothing will change until parents take responsibility for their children.

Why force them to go if they don't want to? If they don't go, there will be more shootings on 2nd watch and more overtime for day officers.
You fail 'em and we'll jail 'em. It's the Chicago way. Those kids have more important things to do than go to school. And their parents have better tings to do than to expect their kids to go to school.
With such a short life span they shouldn't waste their time with useless education.
Live life to the fullest, fastest and most violent.
CPS didn't create this problem and it's not their job to fix it. Take responsibility for yourself and get with the program.

A dysfunctional parent can only develop a -- a dysfunctional child within a dysfunctional home. And that's where the core of the problem has to be approached, attacked. And you have to find a cure for that parent, who doesn't -- who lacks the life lesson skills and management to pass along to those children.
This a passage from a CNN interview with Ronald Holt, he also goes on to say that a segment of these children of our society are unsalveable.

So did I, and if your parent didn't call, you got detention. If you screwed around, you got detention. If you were late to class, you got detention. If you talked back, you got a busted jaw, and your parents would take it out on your ass when you got home. It all sucked, so you conformed. My friend's wife is a teacher in Mississippi, they STILL have corporal punishment and even the problem students are respectful. She said she would never return to Illinois. So lets save some money, bring back corporal punishment, make parents accountable, and realize that not every kid is college material........

I guess it is at the Coook Coounty Jail, do they keep attendance records for CPS students?
It's about time the news media starts calling out the schools. Their next target should be the leaders in the black community that condon and excuse this behavior.
And on another note could the media look at the attendence of Chicago Police Officers. 700 medical, 400 limited, 400 convalescent each day. 1500 coppers a day.
This city and state are morally bankrupt not to mention financially.
