Med Examiner Blames Police
Not only was this one of the fastest (if not THE fastest) declaration of suicide we've seen in a long time, it's also the quickest in blaming the police - not from some play cousin wasn't on the scene - but from an actual government employee involved in the investigation:
The medical examiner says, after a complete autopsy with two police detectives present, all the forensic evidence leads to suicide. The police department does not want to make that same conclusion, however, until it is ready to tell Michael Scott's family that a thorough police investigation was conducted.
Tuesday, the medical examiner says that investigation began with the police breaking the law.
That is a hell of an accusation to make right off the bat. The body is barely cold and the M.E. comes out with "it was suicide" and "the police broke the law." And how did they break the law?
- "Moving the body from a scene without notifying the medical examiner is actually a violation of our ordinance," said Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Nancy Lynne Jones.
So the time stamps are off? We're pretty sure someone in 018 called the M.E. There wasn't any doubt the M.E. was going to want the body. Could we get some clarification on this? Because Doctor Jones is throwing out a bombshell here and remember, she works for an office that once declared that a TASER had killed a subject, completely disregarding the fact he had three times the lethal dose of methamphetamine in his system. All to facilitate a lawsuit.

OT: I was at my first FOP meeting today. I have a few years on the job and know I should be more involved. The thing that got me, is the fact no one there was complaining about how the FOP leadership is doing their job. I mean, I read this blog and all these people are here bitching about the FOP and then nothing is said at the meeting. It really makes me believe that those on here bitching are just a bunch of whinny bitches. Maybe this meeting was different then the rest, I don't know, but I do know that one of the things I hate most about this job is all you salty mo-fo's that bitch about everything. Most of us are getting better working hours next year. I ask everyone to do one thing: Please stop complaining about everything at work, unless you are actively doing something (anything) to change what is so terrible. Obviously our job requires us to think negatively in certain situations, I know this. But, for your fellow officers and for yourselves, please be more positive in life and at work.
BRAVO SSC one has to think why in the world would she make that comment regarding the proximity of the gun to the head. Plenty of suicides are committed by placing the gun in the mouth or under the chin and not necessarily at close range. Unfortunately she is the only person that can place DaMare under arrest if need be.
Careful here boys, Maybe a valid point but Nancy Jones has been a friend for a long time, often at odds with the previous adminstration there. Smart play is to give her the benefit of the doubt in this instance.
No conspiracy theory here, but why rush to Judgement? When Chicago politicians weigh in on a theory it only promulgates the stench of improprietey.
Don't throw Dr Jones under the bus, she and Dr Kaleklar are the best down there at the Medical Examiners Office.
They go by what they find from the examination of the body and what they are told by the detectives along with reports and photos (if available)
The only error that was made that they should have made this pending police investigation instaed of ruling it a suicide.
But to repeat, they are good people and don't deserve to be thrown underneath the bus!!!

Reports are that he was laying under some shallow water and seeing as to how you can wash or even wipe GSR off with a towel it probably would not reveal any residue. It is a highly unreliable test, though, it is a test that can be used. If it shows residue, fine, if it doesn't, that does not mean there isn't or wasn't any.
I have had suicides, multiple homicides, newsworthy deaths, accidental deaths, baby deaths and deaths that I just plain didn't know what happened deaths, but I have never had a death that a medical examiner showed up on! Never. Not in 3 decades have I seen the M.E. on the scene.

First thing you want to understand about the Medical Examiners Office is: They are the top law enforcement official in the county in reguards to crime scene investigations. This is a hard thing for the gold balls to wrap their ego's around and that is why the beat officer is supposed to notify the ME Inv Office as soon as possible. Once in a great while a pathologist will come out to a scene, more often an ME Inv will come out, most of the time neither bother. But I'm sure that young beat officer, overwelmed by all the gold balls responding was not allowed to call the ME Office as soon as he should have.
By the way. Where is the "G" in all this? Silently standing aside watching and listening, maybe pulling some behind the scenes strings. Because you know in the twisted world of Chicago deal making he didn't commit suicide over getting kids into certain schools. But pressure from the "G" on one of the mayor's closest friends is another matter. To see the msg history on that blackberry, now that would be something!
I've seen plenty of cases where they won't even tell you the cause of death "pending further police investigation". Now this bitch wants to call it a suicide without a complete investigation. Why are they all afraid?
My bet is the family found the suicide note and that is why the missing persons report was filed so quickly. If this is so, please give the note to the police.

Always the mob influenced Medical examiners office always labels a hit as an accident or suicide. An independent forensic pathologist needs to be retained by the Scott family. The Medical Examiners office also needs to be investigated. During the Family secrets trial mob hit men testified they threw weapons into the city sewer ,and then asks city workers to retrieved their weapons. And why attack the coroner when Taser International is really the group that has mislead police forces across the country about the potential dangers of tasers?
I talk to coppers from all over the world, they can't believe that the ME rarely (if ever) comes out into the field on a suspicious death or homicide. Every other major jurisdiction has Medical Examiners out at scenes. In 28 years on this job, I have been at plenty of homicide scenes and have never seen one--who are they trying to fool with this BS news conferance.
Our ME's office is a joke and has been for years. Dr Stein was the worst. I still remember him stating: "He had a gluttonous breakfast" when he was talking about Harold W's fatal heart attack.

he was found in 018 by the detective unit. The p.o.s were never made aware that we were to be looking for this guy. Dicks got on the air and said send a paper car, a supervisor and CFD to this site out of the blue. No one knew what was going on. Then a WC from 012 shows up on scene. It was strange all around. The POLICE arent even told when a prominent person is missing? Why? Afraid the media might find out? Had units known about this maybe more than just 2 detectives could have been looking

Daley is behind the police continuing the investigation/ The are several things that are really strange, but they all read suicide. Nancy Jones and Kalekar DO NOT rush to judgement, usually it is the opposite.
#1: Missing 31/2 hours, a 60 year old male and we take a missing persons report.
#2: We ping his phone to locate him. Did he send a text message outlining his intention?
#3: The gunshot wound was through and through, what ballistic evidence are they looking for?
#4:Most people committing suicide do not leave a not.
#5:Suicide is very private, the location indicates suicide.
#6:Most suicides are not a planned or premeditated act. If they were there would be fewer suicides. They are spontaneous. After a suicide every family wonders why the person committed suicide and seldom do they receive answers.
#7:The body was removed before the without the medical examiner's authorization strictly for political reasons. He was a friend of Daley's get him out of the public view.
#8:The family said that he owned a gun but none was registered to him in Chicago. A small 380 pocket pistol is a business man's weapon.
These are things that lean toward the fact fact that the man committed suicide.
No One Wants To Believe It. He is a part of Daley's cabal and he just would not do such a thing.

Personally, I felt when I heard about the scene where Scott was found that they should have left him where he lie, and let the ME come out and sift through the water and whatever else they wanted to. I know that being who the guy was, out of decency they wanted to extract him out of the water asap, but in this instance, it probably wasn't the proper thing to do, especially with so many people who knew the man personally saying this is so out of character for him to take his own life (although he was also said to be a private man; Carrothers would not confirm the existence of recorded conversations with Scott when the Ald. "wore a wire," so who knows who had WHAT on this guy?).

I've been a dick for 5 years and have had an ME investigator on at least 6 deaths, some murders some suicides. They often come out on burned bodies. They have come out on questionable suicides. And they always come out on high profile cases.
The investigators usually just take a couple of pics and stay out of they way, but they do come out.
I have had suicides, multiple homicides, newsworthy deaths, accidental deaths, baby deaths and deaths that I just plain didn't know what happened deaths, but I have never had a death that a medical examiner showed up on! Never. Not in 3 decades have I seen the M.E. on the scene.

Where the hell do you work? I've seen ME investigators come out to homicide scenes several times in 9 years.
This is yet another big disgrace for this department.
The ME gives the final determination for the cause of death. If there is a dead body on scene, THE ME IS IN CHARGE OF THE SCENE, NOT THE POLICE!
If the ME was properly notified about this case and about who Scott was, the ME would have certainly come out to the scene. When Dr. Jones said the body shouldn't be moved, she means it shouldn't have been TRANSPORTED from the scene. When the police spokesperson responded by saying the police moved the body to see if he was alive, it just shows how incompetant 35th Street is.
Close contact wounds can mean murder, but wounds where the gun barrell is pressed against the head are almost always suicide.
Here's why.
When an offender presses a gun against a victim's head, the victim naturally moves his head away from the pressure. This would cause a much different bullet path through the head than if it were a suicide. It would still be a close contact wound, but there wouldn't be evidence that the gun was actually pressed against the head when the gun fired, as in this case.
When a person commits suicide and presses the gun against their head, they move into the pressure. First, because he knows what is going to happen and, second, because he wants to make sure the bullet kills him rather than injures him. For these reasons he takes the pain of a gun pressed against his head, where an unwilling victim would not.
These posts only show that too many people on this department are just as ignorant as the fools who run this department. Just like the moron citizens, everyone has it all figured out and all they had to do was read the paper.
This investigation is being continued for political purposes only. On every suicide I have handled, a family member has told me that it was murder. Every single suicide. Even the overdoses.
For the police department to feed into this bullshit just because the family is connected is disgraceful.
This department is finished.
And why attack the coroner when Taser International is really the group that has mislead police forces across the country about the potential dangers of tasers?

OT: I was at my first FOP meeting today. I have a few years on the job and know I should be more involved. The thing that got me, is the fact no one there was complaining about how the FOP leadership is doing their job. I mean, I read this blog and all these people are here bitching about the FOP and then nothing is said at the meeting. It really makes me believe that those on here bitching are just a bunch of whinny bitches. Maybe this meeting was different then the rest, I don't know, but I do know that one of the things I hate most about this job is all you salty mo-fo's that bitch about everything. Welcome to the small club of those who attend FOP meetings. I am a unit rep and am not in with the in crowd in power at the FOP but I am not overly critical for no reason. I know the job they do is difficult because, well, just look at who they are dealing with. They cannot strike, cannot perform or even recommend job actions, thus everything takes a long time and the only recourse is grievance, lawsuit, unfair labor practice complaints and arbitration.
That limits one's options. Maybe no one down there will cure cancer but of the three regimes in power these guys are no worse than the others, better than the last regime, that's for sure.
The work schedule worked out, be patient brothers and sisters. It is taking a long time, that is the nature of dealing with a city run by daley.

That is true. New class starts on 16DEC09. Letters for the final power test, around 01DEC09, went out about a week ago.
GSR was preformed and came back positive on the left hand of Michael Scott. The .380 used is owned by Scott, but not registered for the last two years. No one wants to believe Scott took his own life. He may have had issues that he would not disclose to even his closest friend. Suicide has no face or political ties so the potential always exist. Just look within our own dept.
If this guy was Joe blow, and he worked as a convenience store clerk, this case would be closed.
Nothing like injecting a little political gamesmanship into the picture, it's not as if the police department has better things to do.

Knowing by personal experience I stood up asked a question about the bnew work schedule,showed them with figures how it was not beneficial as they claimed and the entire membership that was present wanted to attack me rather than the FOP. As I exited the meeting only one copper came up to me and said good question.By the way the question was never answered. In time you will also learn this,as a 19 year veteran I strongly suggest you and other young officers take a serious interest and take action now or you'll be pissing and moaning later also.

I agree with the medical examiner. I've been on enough murder scenes where the patrolmen and women and dumb ass supervisors have screwed the whole scene up by moving shit, moving the body, contaminating evidence. One thing the CPD is not short on is Lazy, Don't give a fuck, unprofessional coppers.
I have advocated CR numbers against coppers for fucking up crime scenes for years, but the detective division doesn't have a boss with big enough balls to start getting CR's. The only guy who would do it was Chasen and guess what the idiots who received CR numbers never showed up on a homicide scene again!

The only issue I have with the ME's office is the fact that the autopsy was done within hours of the death. How often do we hear of high profile deaths where the autopsy is done a day or two later.

The coroner's office was rife with patronage from the start; the first coroner resigned in 1865 to protest interference with his work. M.E. Jones is an excellent, intelligent, and very competent medical examiner as I have seen her in action at post morten exams on numerous occasions. I go with her and I understand the detectives concurred with her findings. It is very hard for a family to accept the manner of death as suicide. Everyone feels guilty because no one saw it coming. And I have been at plenty of death scenes where a M.E. showed up, but I trust our F.I's more than those street M.E. Investigators because the F.I's are not clout, but experienced.
By the way, many inusrance companies do not pay out on policies if the manner of death is suicide. Might be a money issue here.

Gee, could he be trying to stall the Police Board while he appeals the felony conviction?
It isn't over till it's over, and I think that would include all of his legal options, motions, challenges and appeals.
Besides, the female bartender is suing him civilly and if the Board hasn't fired him, it may look like his appeal has a strong chance of success, thus potentially limiting the amount of any monetary loss in civil court.
Personally, I don't want this goof on the job, but he's fighting for his life like any one else would do in his position.

Chicago - Suspicious containers found attached to a police squad car in a parking garage at the Cook County Criminal Courts Building prompted the bomb squad to shut down the garage for about an hour Wednesday afternoon.
A Chicago Police officer was pulling out of the garage at 26th Street and California Avenue about 1:15 p.m. when he heard a rattling noise, got out of his car and noticed two containers adhered to it, Cook County Sheriff’s office spokesman Steve Patterson said.
A police Bomb and Arson unit was sent to the scene and determined the containers did not contain explosives, Patterson said.
"It may cause smoke but they were not explosives," he said.
The garage was deemed safe and was reopened about an hour later.
The incident is under investigation by Chicago Police, Patterson said.

Wrong.
Abatte was convicted of Aggravated Battery by Cook County Circuit Judge John Fleming and given 2 years felony probation, thus disqualifying him from ever again working as a Chicago Police Officer.
"No one in recent memory ... has done more to tarnish the reputation of the Chicago Police Department than Anthony Abbate," Cook County Assistant State's Attorney LuAnn Snow said.
I guess LuAnn Snow never heard of retired Chief of Detectives William Hanhardt, still in a Federal prison for working with a mob jewel theft ring while on duty as Chief of Detectives. That one called for a bit of Tarn-x I would think.
