More Magic Money

  • Chicago will be free to demolish hundreds of abandoned homes in suburban Bensenville to make way for new runways at O’Hare Airport, thanks to a $16 million settlement advanced by a City Council committee Monday.

Peace has been in the works since last spring, when Frank Soto unseated Bensenville Village President John Geils, who led the charge against O’Hare expansion.

[...] That includes traffic and landscaping plans and demolition controls, including temporary fencing. The Daley administration has also agreed to repair and replace Bensenville’s stormwater and wastewater infrastructure if it’s damaged during demolition.

If past history is any indicator, there are cost overruns even in knocking down empty buildings whenever Shortshanks is involved. This open-ended agreement to "repair and replace" seems to be rife with potential for "overruns."

But it is nice to see the Shortshanks's golden goose is still laying million dollar eggs.

Seems that new runway construction at O'Hare is unnecessary capital expense, not needed now and not needed in future. Chicago will continue to contract both demographically and economically - read Crains Chicago's in-depth article written several years ago comparing Chicago to Detroit. Chicago is on same course, just further behind Detroit's timeline for economic obsolesence. Go on the Chicago realtors' web-sites and look at the vast number of vacant homes for sale on west and south sides. There is inadequate population already to absorb all this excess (and likely foreclosed) housing. In next decade, much of this vacant housing will be demolished due to continuing deterioration of neighborhoods and housing stock.

Also note that Eastern European and Asian immigration on north-side masked fact that middle-class has mostly abandoned Chicago, with exception of city employees w/mandated city residency, and liberally-minded yuppies and statistically-small number of white collar families willing to navigate and pay for private school education.

Forbes magazine recently named Chicago the "most stressful" city for the 2nd year in a row. Designation is apt. I'd love to leave Chicago myself; don't like or appreciate living in such a political corrupt and ineptly governed place such as Chicago, Cook County, and Illinois.

A native-born Chicagoan, sad to see the ruin of what was once a great city.

That's not true. They want the new runways (will cut down delays). They don't want new terminals. Of course they don't want new terminals, new terminals will mean more room for the competition.

Daley has this jelly jar. Sticky from all the hands that goes in there to contribute to "his" fund. Sorry guys......you'll never gonna see any of it. Do you ever listen to rich folk? They never have money! Never. They are always crying poor! Sounds like Daley's always crying poor. Hmmm...I wonder.

Lemme get all technical on you: financially speaking, O'Hare is a separate entity. The does not put its own funds into it, nor does O'Hare kick money (jobs and taxes, sure, but not operating profits or cash flow) back to the City. And O'Hare's responsible for its own bonds and other debts. FAA regulations require this.

In other words, O'Hare could be sitting on a pile of cash, and the City would not be able to access it except to pay for things at O'Hare.
