Petition Total - 11,012 (UPDATE - 11,187)

We knew this was a quixotic endeavor. 122,000 signatures in 20 days was a near impossibility.

That being said, with no organization, no warning, no real motivation but disgust and anger with a system that has bled the city and taxpayers for decades and an aldercreature talking out of his ass, we managed to motivate a gathering of 11,000 signatures in 20 days. For a blog that generates 10,000 hits a day, that's not a bad showing. 11,000 votes can make a difference.

First up, thanks must be expressed to Sgt. John Northen (retired). John volunteered to collect, bind and submit the petitions. While we didn't reach the magic number, without his stepping up to be the person in front of the curtain, we wouldn't have had even this small showing. Hopefully, he inspires some others to take their place at the head of what may become a grass-roots-type effort the next time around.

Second, the circulators. You weren't willing to take the word of naysayers and pessimists of which there were plenty in our comment sections and in the field. Many of you probably had your doubts (well-founded doubts) but you did the work anyway. The longest journey starts with the smallest steps and this was a small step. A better organization with more time may very well make the difference next time. Hopefully that organization is being created right now.

A special thanks goes out to the Chicago Fire Department. They were overrepresented in their signatures and in their collecting of signatures. A lot of good-natured teasing goes on between our departments along with some underlying resentments. We have to learn that we are on the same side of many issues, and together we can make some lasting changes that will benefit all of us.

And finally, the signers. Whatever your motivation, courage, disgust, vengeance, putting the pen to paper is the simplest and most powerful of acts. Voting is another. Participation is the key and you participated.

We'll be posting on the effort again shortly and where we might be able to take it in the future. Thanks to everyone who participated. Believe us, it wasn't a waste of time. Not by a long shot.

UPDATE: An additional bunch signatures were received by Sgt. Northen this morning. Had this been actually filed this AM with the Board of Elections, they'd have been out of the running, but as we can't file so shortly, we'll add them to the total.

UPDATE: With a final hand delivery, the total became 11,187.

Great job. Just think what can be done with more time and organization. Don't think the aldermen aren't thinking about that too.

Absolutely not a waste of time.

Here's something I would like to know for the future.

If the next election for mayor is 15 months away, and we want to try to have a referendum placed on THAT ballot, (like term limits, or expanding the jurisdiction of the IG to include the City Council and their staffs), is there a time restriction for a start date when you can begin obtaining signatures?

I'm sure these things will be discussed in the coming weeks and months, but if the referendum can start on day one of its eligibility period and groups can get organized and collect signatures for more than 20 days, I think it can easily be a successful endeavor.

The good folks and the town newspaper live in fear.

Then a lone stranger, often portrayed by John Wayne or Clint Eastwood types, rides into town.

Between SCC, Northside and John Kass, maybe this time our hero will save the good townfolks from the robber baron and his bad guys.

More questions.

I don't think anyone would mind if term limits became the law of the land in Illinois/Cook County/Chicago. It is the pols that become entrenched in their governmental bodies that end up corrupting the entire system and changing it to their own purpose, (ie. Madigan, Burke, Daley).

The poster child of this, is the Chicago City Council who, even though they are recognized as an extremely corrupt governmental body, (30 indicted AND convicted since 1974), has insulated themselves from investigation by disallowing Chicago's Inspector General from investigating them or anyone on their aldermanic staff.

WHY? 30 convictions since 1974, THAT'S WHY. And none of them want to be # 31. For all practical purposes, aldermen have created a pocket in law enforcement that only allows investigation of their criminal activities by the Feds, since, of course, the CPD isn't allowed to investigate political corruption either. TERM LIMITS, and expanding investigatory power of the IG to include the City Council can only clean up politics as usual here in Chicago.

4-2 is it on or off?
Heard a union rep at roll call say it was on Marks desk waiting to be signed by him.

Then I heard another union rep say it was off because “da mare” wants us to sign off on taking the unpaid furlough days before we get 4-2.

Now I hear it was signed by FOP and it’s up to city to give it the green light.

Calling FOP is pointless because no one there seems to know anything about anything and with “da fed” backpedaling on his blog I have to believe it’s off.

December 1st is fast approaching and I’d like to make a decision on what watch I will pick for 2010. (if we get 4-2 then I will stay on 1st watch, if we stay 6-2 then I’m bumping a “dolly” off of 2nd watch)

How can initiatives like this be put on the State ballot?

Is there any way to force the politicians to accept a citizens referendum AS LAW and not a NON-binding suggestion?

Just as the state was handed a list of recommendations for campaign and legislative reforms with some truly innovative ideas by one of Quinn's blue ribbon exploratory panels, they don't mean shit if they ARE NOT IMPLEMENTED INTO LAW.

Needless to say, Madigan deep-sixed most of them and only allowed the most watered down version of SOME OF these "reforms" to even be discussed openly. But Quinn, the puppet, praised Madigan, saying its a historic day in Illinois politics and how nothing like this had ever been done before.

What a shill this idiot governor is! Tax, tax, tax. Spend, spend. spend. Give away, give away, give away. And blame it all on someone else.

Off Topic: He (Scott) apparently fell forward after shooting himself, and the gun was found near the body, the sources say.

While police sources say it appears the gunshot wound was self-inflicted, the Cook County medical examiner's office was still conducting its investigation and hadn't determined how he died.

Hmmmm. Who is conducting this investigation---one of the Boyle brothers? Let's see, he shoots himself, THEN falls into the river WHILE or (according to the article) shooting himself and THEN a gun is recovered at the scene.

Are ya serious? Somebody wants this to go away fast. Scc: Please Post.

You've expressed your outrage.
Please show your support.

We are now selling light blue rubber bracelets for Bill Cozzi. Some say, "Free Bill Cozzi" and some say "Remember Bill Cozzi." Bracelets will be sold for $10.00 each.

The original intent was to raise money for Bill and put it into an account for when Bill gets released from prison. If Bill was unable to collect, the beneficiary of that account would be the Police Memorial Foundation. After talking to Bill and his family, Bill is declining the money but is asking that all proceeds go directly to the Police Memorial Foundation.

Bill was a big supporter of the Police Memorial as he ran the 5K and donated money to the Foundation. What a kind and generous act on his part to think of the Police Memorial Foundation instead of himself while he is going through such a difficult period in his life.

The selling of the bracelets will serve 2 great purposes. Wearing it will show support for Bill and buying it will support the Police Memorial Foundation.

Please remember what happened to Bill can happen to any one of us and it's important not to forget about each other.

These are being sold by a group of people who feel it's important to remember. Today is the first day of the sale. Bracelets will start filtering out to the districts this week. Of course, you can find them in Bill's old district.

They will also be sold tomorrow, 17November at the union meeting and in the union store.

It would be a great show of force for all of us to stick together and wear these. Thanks for your support.

It was only required to collect 11% of last elections total votes cast. That was 122,000 give or take a few hundred, so they gathered 11% of the total needed. Your .4% doesn't mean shit.

Did you even read the petitions? The city (Chicago), county (Cook) and state (Illinois) were already filled out, giving the signer ample opportunity to notice that they had to be Chicago residents. Not only that, these things weren't lying around in suburban malls, they were hand carried by people and hopefully, those people told the signers that they had to be Chicago voters.

This is so strange. I didn't watch the news today so I'm hearing about Michael Scott now. I heard him in an interview last week and he said that (I'm paraphrasing) the schools have been a mess for the past ten years. Who was in charge? Arnie! Who got promoted to Washington for his ineptness. Was Michael Scott ready to ay more?

So if this had worked, what aldermen would you want out? What ones are you okay with?

11/16/2009 09:48:00 AM

==================================
None that have been there more then 1 term already. Honestly there may be 10 that I would ever vote for if I lived in their ward.

TERM LIMITS ON MAYORS AND ALDERMAN.

THEY HARDLY EVER START STEALING ON THEIR 1ST TERM THEY PICK UP BAD HABIT LATER JUST LIKE RECRUITS.

I THINK THIS IS A WORTHY GOAL.
WITH ENUFF TIME AND MANPOWER WITH COULD DO THIS.

NEXT ELECTIONS ARE THE ALDER-MANIC ELECTIONS IN A COUPLE OF YEars.
they wouldnt dare fight it either because it would make them look greedy!

Wow! Why did Scott do it? Admissions scandal or insider real estate trading? Does Big Ike have the answer? What does Arne Duncan know?

Daley looked genuinely stunned, so it wasn't a hit.

Enquiring minds want to know!

Can we still do this for the next election with more time to get it done?

You have to admit there was not a whole lot of time to do it!

I would sign again if it were tried!

I know that Northside may have a record number of arrests. However, I'd bet that he'd trade them all, murderers, rapists, robbers, whatever to lead Shortshanks out of City Hall in cuffs and leg irons with an airtight corruption case.

Great job, John. Thanks, SCC.

OT-- The dead in St. John's Cemetery will not sleep. Here come the bulldozers. It's Meigs Field time again. The 600 homes and businesses are coming down. Daley has finally shut up Bensenville. Cost of bone thrown to dog -- $16 million one-time payment, probably to be divided among new and more "amicable" village president Soto's contractor pals, &c. to build a new Richard Daley Children's Center or something...

Cops: Initial investigation indicates Scott shot himself.

Now, didn't Mr. Scott know that handguns were illegal in Chicago?

The Trib has a photo on its website of him with Fr. Fake and Rev. Meeks at a gun collection event...

Defeat as many as possible.

Change means CHANGE!

If we can replace the useless clowns that are destroying our city and our very surroundings, we will only improve our lot in life.

Imagine for a moment, a government run by intelligent, serious, professionals, whose goal is NOT to steal everything around them.

Imagine getting our neighborhoods back to a safe and crime free state where you can step outside without ducking gunfire.

Imagine...

I'm sorry, I can't keep a straight face any longer!

But, yeah... replace 'em all!

Merely an advisory petition that carries very little if any weight. You were able to obtain signaures of less than .4 percent of the total population of Chicago, and I wonder how many signatures were on there twice, were from non-registered voters, or from suburbanites. Pulleeze!!

Go ahead, fire away

Well hello mayor daley!!!

Glad to see you came out from under your rock to post a comment. You must be getting nervous! Don't worry when the time is right, you will see how insignificant we citizens of Chicago really are!!!

Now crawl back in your box you troll until it's time for masters to "bring out the gimp".

Off the topic: As I said before this is the early stages of mysterious deaths in Chicago. All of which had ties to Daley! Christopher Kelly and now Michael Scott. Who will be the next one to die mysteriously after talking to the FEDS?

Just do like the unions did. Pick on one or two alderman. Run someone legit against them and volunteer. Doesnt even need to be a P.O. Just someone sympathetic to the cause. Defeating the mayor will not happen. He will die in office or quit. An alderman is a good place to start.

there are plenty of changes needed to be made.

changes such as only honest men and women will ever make.

the first one has to be ensuring that referendums are binding.

the second is ensuring that binding referendums do not require an obscene number of voter signatures to make it to the ballot.

then the exact nature of each referendum can address the needs of curtailing the abuses of governmental authorities which this city, county and state are so well known for.

Defeating Daley doesn't mean you have to beat him in the next election. Whoever you support needs to make a good showing and after you lose to him you stay organized and pound him in the media and keep the pressure on in every way you can. Getting these petitions signed shows the cops can organize and organize well. Just keep it going. We can be an army of potential organizes on alderman elections, mayoral elections and working the media.

"With SOLIDARITY, we will accomplish our goals, hopefully with the help of local news media and the Chicago office of the U.S. Attorney." - Northside

Daley owns local media. Now under Obama and Holder, Fitzgerald wouldn't dare prosecute Daley and his 50 thieves. I really wonder about Fitzgerald since he made poor Cozzi into a BS federal case.

Otherwise, great job, John. I just hope you are not Don Quixote.

11/16/2009 04:06:00 PM Term limits? Are you nuts? Look at the rise in pensions that would have to be paid out to "one term" aldermen.

minimum 10 years of elected public service to vest would take care of that problem.

...Did you even read the petitions? The city (Chicago), county (Cook) and state (Illinois) were already filled out, giving the signer ample opportunity to notice that they had to be Chicago residents. Not only that, these things weren't lying around in suburban malls, they were hand carried by people and hopefully, those people told the signers that they had to be Chicago voters.
