Was this the result of the meeting held today at Headquarters where Jody met with P.O. reps and asked what the ten biggest obstacles facing the department were and they replied with 1 thru 5: Jody and 6 thru 10: Shortshanks.

Insane.....some of the younger coppers will be going on furlough two weeks after picks. Just because they are new on the job doesn't mean they should be jacked around. I know someone will post talking about how they walked to furlough, both ways, with no shoes in snow when the were new; but that's the same logic all these asshole bosses use. Professional organizations don't treat their employees like this, it doesn't matter how long they've worked for you.

This new schedule brings up so many different possiblities for me now. I'm actually thinking about bidding to midnights. I can do 4 straight on mids no problem. Then actually be home to spend time with the family during the day.

Gotta give credit to the FOP for this. Thank you guys.

WTF !!! Are we looking at a 5 year contract???? or am I misreading this. Please , someone tell me I am interpreting this wrong. If its a 5 year contract that we're looking at, then where the fuck have I been. I thought we were barganing for a 4 year as always not a 5 year!

And what about the line that states thats its dependant on if the Sgts. agree?

And now they want to push the starting times to 0700/1500/2200 . Make up your fucking minds. Oh i'm sorry Donahue sold us out again!!!! Hey FLOP get the Fuck outta here.!!!

I've got 20 years on the job genius. Go back and read the original post. Seniority has nothing to do with giving employees (yes, that's what we are) adequate notice before their vacation starts. The city should have decided what they wanted to do weeks ago. The city fucks up and the typical CPD meathead starts ripping the kids just off probation. Not too many of us get fired every year. Find something to hang your hat on besides lack of adverse job action by your employer.

If you don't like it there is something wrong with you. You get more time off. Hell, you even get 0.5 hr extra for personal days. You will work 4 days straight NOT 6 days straight. You still get 2 days off. You only work an extra 0.5 hr.

11/16/2009 11:40:00 PM

I agree! You would if you were in the 8.5hr day 6-on 3-off.......which is a better choice by far than the 4 & 2. Weekends come at 3 to 4 week mark. People want to argue that if you want a 3 day weekend you should burn a day. I say Bullshit! I shouldnt have to burn any time that we just handed back to the city. The FOP and others who agreed to this just gave the city our 3day weekends back. If you are in a district that denies time then you are screwed. Just another way to whittle away at your comp time, bfds and personal days. Remember.....cant sell any back if you DONT HAVE ANY. And this crap about "ohhh we only have to work 4days in a row" and "by the 5th-6th day im ready to snap" is just unreal! You act as though you are working in a sweatshop for 18hrs for christsake. If you are ready to snap then maybe you should change profession. Any person with half a brain on this job knows the importance of a thur-fri-sat, fri-sat-sun, and a sat-sun-mon. But, this is only my opinion. Sorry if it sounds biased or offends. Im currently working the 6-3 and love it and would not trade it at all. Schedule is great, feel rested like just came back off a mini-vacation everytime and still have time to work sidejobs, go to court and be with the family. Is the 4-2 better than 6-2, YES! is 4-2 better than 6-3, ABSOLUTELY NOT!

Off Topic....
Hey SCC,
Please put this out there to see if there is any truth to this;
On the night of 12-NOV-2009 at Officer Valadez benefit, the SCORE was broadcating live (Bears game) from the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana. At the broadcast table was Dan Hampton (former 85' Chicago Bear) along with a SCORE DJ. The braodcast table was approximatley 30-40 feet from the admission table to the Valadez benefit. A member of the CPD (007-Capt.) approached Dan Hampton and spoke with him about Officer Valadez, his legacy and the benefit. The fine Capt. decided to ask Dan Hampton if he could speak to the crowd for a couple minutes during the presentation part of the Valadez benefit. Dan Hampton replied, "Sure I would do it......for $2,500.00." If this is a true account of what had happened.....Let's burry this mother fucker in the media! Everyone NEEDS to know this and I would love to see SCC lead the campaign!

typical coppers bitch, bitch, bitch. We get so much more time off who gives a f about 3day weekends when we only work 4 days in a row.To those bitchin about the lose of furlo time and use of baby furlo time.At most your losing 4.5 days all together(25 working days=200 Hours/8.5=23.52days.22 working days=176 hours/8.5=20.70 days) and that's actually if you use you BFD's.Knowing you dinosaurs who sell those days back you won't even use them.We get 16 more days off minus the aforementioned then your looking at a total of 11.5 extra days off.So don't be afraid of change, change is good. All except for Obama and im sure the ultimate tact warrior will be disappointed at the extra time off hindering him from digging around a crackheads ass looking for a rock

Very interesting. The city agrees to a work schedule that costs more money (more cars are needed for the overlap, more PDTs, more radios) and that puts less police officers on the street. Oh wait...but officers take more time off and burn comp time and BFDs / PDs. Ah-ha! Ask someone in 18 or 14 how much more time they used in 2009 than 2008.

6 and 3 would have been the ideal schedule. And the new work hours stink. Forget about going to school or a reasonable side job. More time off? Yeah, when they want you to take it.

And why not all the districts? Ask someone from 8 or 13, they love the 6 and 3.

And the Lts and Capts? What are they going to get for approving a BS contract? A better schedule probably.

Think about it, something is rotten.

The officers who were going to get 1st Period furlough know who they are and they were going to get that furlough anyway.

I got 1st or 2nd furlough the first 3 years I worked and was told that is how it is. Then I was lucky enough to get part of a 3rd and 4th period.

What would you suggest, that new people suddenly be awarded summer or 13th period furloughs? You can give up yours if you like.

Am I missing something? Didn't the city and fop agree to the pilot programs to see which one the rank and file liked the best and would work out better for the majority? Weren't we supposed to give input on which one we prefer? Would it be put to a vote with our unit reps asking our opinions? Was this a ploy by "management", just to get us to go along with what the little prick wants? Who started the blitz on this blog to get the 4-2? was it the city or some people with side jobs that fit with their schedules? What is wrong with the other work schedules? Did anyone discuss them?

Inquiring minds would like to know...

Un-fucking believable! You guys are just never satisfied. One TRUE weekend? This new schedule will now allow us to have at least one of the weekend days off: FRI-SAT, SAT-SUN, SUN-MON. Under the current schedule you have to wait, what,5 to six weeks before you get your 3 day weekend?

As for rotating backwards.....so what! The ONLY difference is no ore 3 day weekends (given). You can always put a slip in if you want. Rotating backwards at least makes it feel that the work week is shorter.

This isn't the 50's anymore. It isn't the man of the household that woks 9-5, Mon - Fri with weekends off. Most of us live in a 2 income household so we grab time with the family whenever we can.

You will now be able to spend more time with your families. Like anything in life that's worth having.........MAKE IT WORK FOR YOU.

Everyone needs to stop behaving like this is a great accomplishment on FLOP's part. Quite simply the City after Marv Shearer's financial gutting of the Department and the reality of being almost 3,000 Officers short of its continously made public statements of 13,400 sworn officers, needed to adequately staff the responsibilities of the Department. The only way to do so was to eliminate a day off group and spread that manpower over the other 6 day off groups to achieve better staffing and meet responsibilities. So regardless of the fact that work schedule change has been in negotiation by FLOP for the last 3 contracts and 10 years, in reality it was only achieved as a result of the City being left with no other choice in regards to staffing. Do more with less. While it is a great change and will undoubtedly improve our conditions, please look at it realistically, how much in fact did the FLOP achieve on this issue and how much of it was really just a "necessary evil" the city was left with as a result of under staffing. Please keep this in mind, when accessing where the credit is to be placed. If FLOP is to get all the credit in reality has FLOP not significantly failed in that it took three contracts and 10 years to achieve one benefit?

As for rotating backwards.....so what! The ONLY difference is no ore 3 day weekends (given). You can always put a slip in if you want. Rotating backwards at least makes it feel that the work week is shorter.

This is exactly what the city wants, us to use more of our accrued comp time, so then we have to take more time instead of money for ot, they could have easily let us try 6-3, why didnt they??? easy to see; also, good luck trying to burn "your" time in most of the busy districts that are so short manpower... it's a clusterfuck, but i'm willing to try it. let's revisit it in a year and see how it worked out..

In regards to Dan Hampton, I might be wrong but I think he has had a couple of DUIs so he might not be a fan of the police. I understand that it was a rude comment, but who the fuck really cares about what Dan Hampton has to say about our beloved officer, especially if you have to approach him. Jordan made a nice reference to John Knight that was unprompted and sincere. Ultimately though I only care what his fellow brothers in blue and family have to say. Just remember these guys play a kids game for millions, it doesn't make them great orators, or great men or entitled to great opinions.

This is a big mistake! No more 3 day weekends!

11/16/2009 11:40:00 PM

All you can focus on is the 3 day weekend. When those roll around, yes, they are great. BUT, what about the other six weeks in a row that you have to work 6 straight days with only two off? Those weeks suck ass. Everything in life is a trade off. I think this is a good trade off. We are getting rid of working 6 straight days!! Think about it. Our work week is only four straight! the proffessional world would kill for that schedule. To me, it's well worth giving up the 3day weekends that would only roll around about 8 times a year.

To those saying that the 6-3 is the answer, you may be right, but the majority of us kept telling the FOP that we wanted to get rid of the 6 day work week. SO... that's what they focused on. And they accomplished it for us. I think either the 6-3 or 4-2 are stellar schedules and i am extremely happy to finally get rid of the 6-2. I think that was the worst schedule ever and can't believe anyone would bitch about seeing that go. Anything at all was better than that.

11/17/2009 10:38:00 AM

To those that just can't see past losing the "3 day weekend," remember there are still districts out there working other schedules. The 6-3 is still going in 2 districts and the 10 hour days are going in districts and units. If losing the 3 days weekend which only rolls around every 6 weeks is THAT important to you, then you should bid to one of those said districts that have a schedule more fitting to you.
The FOP was savvy enough to be able to keep some districts working under different schedules for people that really want those.
I have to say, great great job by the FOP on this one. You accomplished something no other teams have been able to for over 45 years. You found a way to be able to make everyone happy. A monumental task among these cry babies we work with.

I got 1st or 2nd furlough the first 3 years I worked and was told that is how it is. Then I was lucky enough to get part of a 3rd and 4th period.

What would you suggest, that new people suddenly be awarded summer or 13th period furloughs? You can give up yours if you like.

You people are morons. The original post isn't saying young coppers should have anything but a winter furlough. The point is we should be picking furloughs with adequate time for people to make plans. And the other point isn't that they already know they are getting winter furloughs. They do know that. The post's point is that we are constantly disrespected by the department and city, and you will never get a professional organization until that organization starts treating its members professionally. The stupidity of some people never ceases to amaze me.

11/17/2009 06:46:00 AM

Why would the Fop want input from you? You're just a member who pays dues. If they did, they would be considered a union, we can't have that now. Marky is too busy seeking future employment somewhere sweet. He and the other flunkies don't care about you or the Cpd.
The Fop ignored the input it received on the surveys on their own website. Just like Weis and UIC ignored the morale survey findings. It's one big scam. Together we can.

11/17/2009 12:33:00 PM

Attention, Whether you like the schedule or not, it should have been put up for a vote by all active union members, majority wins. Just like they did years ago when trying to pilot the 10 hour days, it was shot down by the members and Fop was pissed.
Let's not be fooled into thinking the Fop did something good here, the end doesn't justify the means. Think about it.

"IRS: Tax amnesty brings in billions
Nearly 15,000 wealthy Americans participated in the government's amnesty program.
Posted by Elizabeth Strott on Tuesday, November 17, 2009 12:00 PM
Thousands of wealthy Americans decided to tell the Internal Revenue Service about offshore bank accounts, taking advantage of a special amnesty program that ended in October.

The program offered reduced penalties for wealthy Americans who voluntarily disclosed previously undeclared foreign bank accounts and assets, the IRS and U.S. Justice Department announced today.

"We were flooded with people coming in the final days of the program," IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman told reporters. Regarding the value of the accounts, "we are talking about billions of dollars coming into the U.S. Treasury," Shulman said.

The IRS said the 14,700 voluntary disclosures announced today are nearly double what the agency reported last month. They are also in addition to the 4,450 accounts UBS (UBS) must turn over to the IRS under a settlement with the U.S. government. Terms of the settlement call for UBS to disclose the identities of American clients who are suspected of evading U.S. taxes.

Shulman said that many disclosures involved bank accounts in Switzerland and Europe but that assets were hidden in more than 70 countries."

Would be willing to bet that Richie Pisspants Daley and many of his circlejerkers have offshore accounts. Hope they release the names to the public. Little Richie Pisspants could have easily opened accounts on one of his many free private jet jaunts to Europe with Magpipe.

You are full of shit. I am a unit rep and the meeting was NOT secret and we did NOT get a vote. We were told which way the Board of Directors voted, we were informed, that is all the meeting was about.

At no time was the alternative work schedule going to be voted on, the only one the city would agree to was the 4 and 2. Remember, management has a pretty big say in this, they are, after all, management.

So your choice would have been 6-2 or 4-2. And it is likely that only 30% or so would bother to send the ballots back in anyway. I like it better this way. Now it is done. We asked for it, we got it. Now shut up and work.

I am glad about this schedule. It is a long time in coming. Leaving roll call after the announcement was the first time in a very long, long time that I actually left the station in a very good mood about this job and the last time that happen it had to be in the 1990's when I was too young to know better.

Certainly, not everyone is happy about this, but I would say about 80% of the guys I talked to are glad about this schedule.

I still remember a couple of contracts back when a FOP vote on the issue scheduling issue resulted in a tie by the membership. Right! A tie!

This I think will do something with brightening the outlook for the future, but not as much if Shortshanks would give us a fair contract. I still will consider any alternatives we can use that will put pressure on that numbnutz to treat us fairly.

11/17/2009 08:03:00 AM

And never forget, ADS Marv Shear, even though he masqueraded in the CPD blue-shirt uniform for a few years, is not a friend of the sworn side of the organization, unless you are one of his ass kissers. O20 Lucy! We are calling you out!

In fact, Shear is an asshole that has completely forgotten about the people in uniform and has totally gone over to the other side. Our very own CPD Benedict Arnold comes to mind. And he and Huberman have two things in common, with one of them being from blue shirt to ADS with no stops in between! ADS my ass!

Boo whoo! For the guys with little time on the job!

Hey asswipe, at least you have a job in this shitty economy making a decent buck! Let's be honest!

I know of a few people who haven't had a paycheck in over a year! Ask them if they had a job with a winter vacation how they would deal with it!

Just deal with it! When I had a winter furloughs, i just went to someplace warm like Mexico and the Caribbean! There's a nice thought when it is below zero outside!

We all went through it, except for J-Fed! The P.P.O's will all get their great furlough picks soon enough on the job!

It's a right of passage!

For those who think Fop rocks you are out of touch or belong to the current administration. First of all the members were trying to eliminate 6 day work week and did not want a 10 hour day,so why were they part of the pilot program. Is FOP not listening to the members. The work schedule should stay the same for now only until something more thought out can come to the table and be presented to the members for approval not shoved down our throats. I work the 6-3 schedule, and id rather work the 6-2 for the following reason. With the 6-2 Vacation days, B-furlo days is a tour of duty per the collective bargaining agreement. With the new schedule if you have a working day furlo your vacation day is converted to hours at a rate of 8 hours even though you are working 8.5 and you have to use .5 hours of comp time for a B-furlo. even though a B-furlo day in the CBA mirrors a work day. Now as far as this nonse of getting more time off that is a misconception, the magic # is 2080 a year and under the new schedule you will work 2074 that only equals 6 hours people. So you work an extra half hour a day to earn 1.5 minutes. Why should any one of us have to dip into our comp time just to complete our furlo that we have already earned per the CBA. So no one is getting extra days off you are still working the same amount of time and off the same amount of time, it justs looks different. Take a solid nickle and 5 pennies looks different one looks like more because of numbers but in the end its the same. Remember the grass looks greener on the other side and FOP works for us,not dictate to us. They dangled a carrot lets not be foolish enough to bite.

"The only way to do so was to eliminate a day off group and spread that manpower over the other 6 day off groups to achieve better staffing and meet responsibilities."

OK, stupid. Let's run through this one time: there used to be 7 day off groups. That means 2/7 of the work force is off every day. Now there will be 6 day off groups, with 2/6 (or 1/3 for those of you who didn't get past 2nd grade) off every day. Because 2/6 is bigger than 2/7, that means that there will be LESS officers on the street every day. Probably 1 or 2 cars per watch per day. So how on earth is this "better staffing" and better able to "meet responsibilities"? To whom? Certainly not the citizens. And how much more do additional cars and PDTs and radios and in-car cameras cost?

What will be given up for these additional costs and less officers on the street? And are you ready to quit whining about less police on the west end of 8 or the north end of 16 or 17?

And the starting times really suck. Ask anyone trying to coordinate with a spouse's workday. And yes, some officers are actually trying to improve themselves and go to school. It used to be you'd work midnights and take night classes before work. Now that's all f'cked up.

For Christ's sake think big picture and long-term.

Together we can.

to all the smart guys posting that we should give the young coppers time to plan their furlos I say this. When I had 1 2 or 3 years on I planned for a 1 or 2 furlo, if at furlo picks I could do better I would do it if it didn't effect my plans I made. So do the same thing, plan for a 1 or 2 if you do better, you'll have time to plan then, if not you already planned for a 1 or 2 anyway, not so hard now is it? And they said the college requirement would improve the mental capacity of the department...

To the young officers on the job who are going to get a 1 period furlough,my first year on CPD i knew i was going to get a winter furlough so i planned ahead,my first year was a trip to Las Vegas(it was a little cooler at night).Think about it,it was the time of year where it slowed down and there where really good deals out there. We stayed at one of the best hotels in Vegas(the MGM).The car rental was cheaper when we arrived they upgraded my car rental from a chevy impala to a shiney knew chryslar 300(because they had just updated the fleet of cars and with a knew batch and was turning over the older cars),and upon checking in at the hotel they upgraded my room. The second year went on a 7 day criuse at the price of the four day cruise,we did a little research because you have too check where hurricane season falls in-between.It was the best time too take the cruise because it was at a slower time of the year for them also, once again i found a good deal.I know it's a long rant but the point i want to make is you have too make it work for you.I have had a quite a few jobs and i will tell you besides my time as a U.S.Marine(the best time of my life).Nothing else compares to being a Chicago Police Officer and not because of the pay(a bonus)but because at the time this was the best Police Dept. in the country bar none. The bosses where great, the co-workers where great because they where willing too take a knucklehead like me,help me become a Chicago Police Officer and for that i was and still to this day am greatful and feel it was an honor too take that early furlough, because i knew the P.O.'s before me paid the dues neccssary to have the good furluogh's.My first night on the job a homicide at Keeler/Jackson,you can take a guess as to who the Sgt assigned the case report?.We all had to do our time in the P.P.O. box, before you know it you will have 5-6 years on,you wont get that ultamate furlough segment but you will not have to accept a 1a-2b dates.Hang in there it will get better!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I get first picks on watch and furlough. Wasn't always that way, I had to wait years. Seniority is great, when you have some you enjoy it, seniority is earned.

So no seniority gets you a crap furlough, you can always bid to a different district if watch selection and furlough are priorities. But two years is shit anywhere.

4 and 2 sounds just fine for me. 4 days is all I have to do? Oooh boy, I am gonna like that. Days to boot! What's next? In three years they will start paying me $60,000 a year to stay home! Forever! With a 3% raise every year! And I never break a sweat! What's not to like? OK by me.

You my friend are a idiot.
let me break it down for you if for numbers sake lets say we have 10,000 cops divided over 7 day off groups and they eliminate day off group 7 that is 1,428 cops and they disperse them over the 6 day of groups that 238 officers extra on each day off group. so although your 2/7 and 2/6 is correct you are not taking into effect the extra officers! u must have gone to a public school!

Umm, try this moron:

Let's say 42 POs on a watch. Spread over 7 DOGs in 6&2 is 6 per DOG, 12 officers off each day. Spread over 6 DOGs in 4&2 is 7 per DOG, 14 officers off each day. Get it now? You must have gone to a parochial school.

Now fully admitting that I went to a suburban public school and my wife went to a suburban parachoial school, we both been figurin that based on a number of 10,000 officers put into 6 day off groups that adds 238 officers to every day off group if evenly spread out, so while you have 2 day off groups with 1667 Officers per DOG on the the 4-2 or 3333 off a day, you also have added 238 officers to 4 other DOGs for a total of 952 more Officers a day that are not day off.

Why don't you go to an FOP meeting once in a while and tell your concerns directly to the FOP leadership. Come to think of it there was an FOP meeting just the other day, Tuesday to be exact.

Your very question was addressed by Mark Donahue who stood for questions as long as anyone had questions to ask.

What? You weren't there? So I guess you won't know the answer. Ask your Unit Rep or call 312-733-7776.

**** TO ALL UNITS NOT INCLUDED IN THE NEW 4-2 SCHEDULE ****

Get together with your unit reps and get a petition going stating that you want to be included in ongoing negotiations for purposes of eliminating the 6th work day like the bulk of the police department has done.

Work hard to get 100% of the unit to sign this petition. Get your unit rep to present these petitions to FOP President Donahue and ask for monthly updates from the Work Schedule Committee, chaired by FOP Trustee Kevin Graham of 023.

Do not let anyone forget you submitted the petition and if you are not updated monthly on progress lean on your unit reps to keep this subject on the front burner and to keep the membership of those units informed.

Now get moving.
