Another Trade Show Gone?
- Chicago's standing as a trade show center faces yet another pummeling as the National Restaurant Association weighs whether to take its 2012 trade show elsewhere, according to sources close to the negotiations.
An exit by this McCormick Place star--a top show here for more than a half-century--would be a third brutal punch to the city, which in the past week lost two other shows.
The plastics industry trade show, a triennial event, announced Tuesday it will move its 2012 and 2015 shows to Orlando after nearly four decades in Chicago. And the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society last week said it would move its 2012 annual meeting to Las Vegas.
Both cited the cost of doing business in Chicago as the major factor in their decisions.
The Restaurant people haven't verified this one yet, but the fact that they're only committed to Chicago through 2011 speaks volumes and gives them unprecedented leverage in making their decision. The plastic industry trade show said they'll save $20 million by not showing up and they're similar in size and scope to the Restaurant convention.
We could actually be witnessing the dissolution of the last of the Rust Belt cities before our very eyes. An even bigger blow could be the 2010 census if Illinois loses another few seats in Congress.

this could be the first missing case that cpd could solve on their new show. where did all the convention/trade shows go? we found them in florida and vegas.
Daley can make the bleeding stop:
Charge normal rates to the conventioneers.
But saddly he won't. In six months time when all the hoopleheads have forgotten this story He will cry about lost revenue and raise taxes and fines.
Remember: when you find your self in a hole, just keep digging.
Our future:
A Tour Of Detroit's Ghetto
Yes, we have Englewood, but they have a whole f-ing CITY!
In January 2009, a man in his mid 50s named Johnnie Redding was found frozen in several feet of ice at the bottom of an elevator shaft in the Detroit Public School Warehouse
Apparently, the body had been just sitting in the bottom of the shaft for weeks. None of the numerous homeless people living inside the warehouse bothered to call the police. Even after the authorities were notified(multiple times), it was several days before anyone came out. It took a jackhammer to remove the body, who was later identified by his wallet.
Detroit City Council hearing adjourned amid shouting match
Sorry SCC, I'd blame the half-wit, hick unions before daley on this one. $60.00 to get a union electrician to plug a cord in??? That says alot about the IQ of 99% of their members.
When are they going to have a "Tactical Police Weapons and Pornography," show?
I want to have my own booth where I can sell my rocket launchers, baseball caps, jeans, mace grenades, french ticklers, and machetes.
Turn the place into a casino and the conventions will come back.
The restaurant show would be devastating. It could be the one that opens the dyke. The city is in deep, deep trouble.
I wonder if its possible to move the whole department somewhere else since we have these high costs also having to live in this shithole.
LAST ONE OUT TURN OFF THE LIGHTS.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
Detroit
If I were a betting man, I'd bet on a casino at the recently expanded McCormick Place with the justification being something has to be done to pay for the massive expansion now that these shows left.
Call Daley what you want but EVERYTHING happens for a well calculated reason with him.
by by Daley!!
With the Wall Street raping of our economy and the hear no evil see no evil demeanor of the regulatory and rating agencies supposedly overseeing the proper stewardship of the national economy, Daley and the spend-holic Democrats in Illinois are pissing in to the wind.
Twenty years of Daley rule and Democrat control of IL politics has turned IL into an economic basket case. These political Clowns often say, "It's not our fault. The country is in the worst economic downturn since the Geat Depression".
While that may be true, the fact is while they have been in power, these Clowns have totally ignored the cycles of economic expansion and contraction over hundreds of years in the USA. They have continued to spend more and more AND they have piled on masive debt thru the unfunded pension entitlements and other benefits for Mc Pier patronage workers and other non-essential City and State employees.
Their alliance with the unions for votes and political campaign contributions have inflated the cost of doing business in Chicago and Illinois to a level that is resulting inthe vaporization of revenue to the City.
Unions in and of themselves are not a bad thing but they are counterproductive when they evolve in to a mob racket that cripples competitive manufacturing. Unions are supposed to protect Labor from being exploited not to be used as a conduit for making a select clique of the union heirarcyhy rich.
When a Union drives away business, they cease to fulfill the purpose for which they were created and become the user they were supposed to protect the worker against.
In lieu of all the businesses and people who are fed up with paying more for less and who have the opportunity to leave they are getting the hell out of this state (NY is another example).
Daley likes to talk about the "heavy" lifting that is necessary to govern. If he had the stones to really do that he would already have brought in the Unions for a sit down and laid out that he is mandating a 20% roll-back in all non-first responder, overheadrr type employee salaries or rolling back labor costs to what they were 3 years ago and that he expects the Unions to adjust their costs to the city accordingly. If they don't, there will be a 10% elimination of labor across the board for ALL citywide non-essential overhead city and union labor.
Additionally, he would eliminate TIFs and roll back taxes. The magnitude of the cutbacks I outline are off the cuff but the gist is the COST of what these Clowns manage and what they are paid to manage has to be reined in. The cost of the graft is another significant factor.
Then he would publicly call upon Madigan and the rest of the Clowns in Springfield to get the State finances in order.
That's heavy lifting, something the mayor has never had a clue about and with every lost trade show and every lost business and with every lost dollar in city revenue that fact will be re-affirmed.
Facts are, Daley is not the guy for the job. He and his ilk are why this City and State is in the condition it is in.
Watch, he's not going to run again.
The next man or woman in the Mayor's chair will find the desk coverd in a heaping pile of shit left by Daley and his cronies.

Poor Mister Daley first lost the Olympics and now the largest trade shows are leaving? Is this a bibical sign Mister Daley has lost his appeal and no one now fears this DEVIL. IS this the first of the seven signs of armagedon.
Oh well, the city has no money. I guess pay cut time is coming. Ever city worker must take a 20% pay cut.
For decades, the putrid web of mob tied unions and laborers with criminal records as long as your arm, have conspired to separate the conventions and their businesses as well as the conventioneers themselves from every nickel and dime they had.
This doesn't even consider how the city's entertainment and hotel taxes and fees fleeces these tourists for additional funds. At some point, people begin to look at the City of Chicago and weigh the disadvantages against other convention cities and it becomes a no-brainer to get the hell out of Dodge!
Even worse, since most of these industry conventions plan for years in advance, once they bail on Chicago, it will be years before they WOULD EVEN CONSIDER returning here. And what is Chicago's new selling point going to be? We promise to F*CK YOU LESS in the future?
Sorry, but this mayor has allowed the tentacles of his Daley/Burke Crime Family to penetrate into every aspect of of this city and government, and, combined with the collapse of the world economy, the pieces are crashing around our heads, everywhere.
Now it appears that the conventions are conspiring against Chicago. Or maybe they are just struggling to survive this economy, as well.
Either way, I wouldn't count on their infusion of 100's of millions of dollars into our local economy for years, and whoever is left in charge to pick up the pieces after the inevitable departure of the mayor and his 50 thieves, those people are screwed as well.
JJ jr. is my frigging congressman...wouldn't mind losing him...
Let me see...I live in Chicago,Illinois and have shortshanks for a mayor 50 thieves for a city council Quinn the capon for a governor urkel for county board president. Jesse jr. for a congressman turbin durbin and king of the world Roland burris for senators...Yeah time to move.
450.00 for 4 cases of pepsi to be delivered to one convention booth--- how much were the plastic cups and the bag of ice---- no wonder nobody wants to come here---
Wow. Wonder what's going to happen to McPier's bonds. They spent the '00s spending like drunken sailors to expand the McCormick monstrosity.
And now it's going to sit empty.
I smell a default.
Companies and taxpayers need to get the hell out of Cook County as soon as possible before the politicans confiscate everything they have to redistribute to the non-payers.
I know from experience that the county electricians have to be summoned just to change a light bulb. I have seen their union thugs come to the office and tell the supervisors that nothing can be done such as change lighbulbs by workers other than union workers.
casino time!
Custodian Gets $14K for Toilet Paper Injury
Injured her back twice while "reaching around to pick up a piece of toilet paper"

Call this a one-two ply punch.
Cook County is paying a custodian $14,022 over her claims that she injured her back twice while "reaching around to pick up a piece of toilet paper," the Sun-Times reports.
Mary Lait, a custodian in the sheriff's office, injured herself in October 1997 and March 1998. She remains on the job.
"Do I think it's excessive?" said County Commissioner Bridget Gainer, after a meeting Wednesday in which the settlement was approved. "I think we end up compensating employees for illnesses and injuries they bring with them to work."
The city and its policies destroyed a HUGE productive industrial area for this ever-growing convention-center-and-shiny-glass-hotels stuff...and now this.
Been hearing about those McCormick Place electricians for decades. Latest reports say that the people who pulled out did so partially because the electricians here charge TEN TIMES what is charged in other cities to wire a display. (Union guy has to plug something in, even -- no one else can touch it. Not like it stopped the original McCormick Place from going up in smoke...)
In other news -- "The Big Relief" at Jewel/Osco (owned by Supervalu of Minnesota now -- always a bigger fish) involves charging $3.69 for a bag of tortilla chips that are $1.99 everywhere else I shop.
Thanks for your "help," guys.
"Half price," "Two for the price of one" and "Buy one, get one free" all mean different things now. Everything has a hook, a scam, a hidden expiration date. I took a bunch of stuff back to the Customer Service desk at Jewel last night, got a refund, and, on the refund slip, I filled in the "REASON" space as "deceptive pricing practices."
By the way, put a mask on that sick thing behind the counter, willya? Bitch kept coughing all over me. I just needed a few groceries, not H1N1.
Tired of it all. F**k all you motherf**kers in your offices, spending all day trying to figure out how to screw someone for another dollar. I ain't buying s**t this Christmas. Suffer. Die. Close the store and bulldoze it flat when you can't pay the property taxes. Then illegal aliens can use the vacant lot for a flea market to sell broken toys, dirty baby clothes, and filthy old mattresses.
Maybe the growing number of massage parlors, hair-braiding salons, nail-art boutiques, and "payday loan" operations will help take up the slack...you know, like they have in Detroit and other cities...
They charge $100 for a case of pop. No wonder they are leaving Chicago.
1:20 Hits it on the head...they'll make McCormick Place East the casino, limit access to some areas for conventioneers only (who want's to gamble next to mookie & pookie?)
If you have ever been to McCormick place to make a delivery like i have with my side job you can see the problem. All bridgeport MOB WANNABEES driving forklifts making 45.00 an hour. Go look for yourself. It truely is amazing, and thats only one union down there. Don't even getting me started on the RIGGERS union and all their ties to organized crime and the Daley family!

not likely.
we ain't that important in the grand scheme of things.
but i do feel your pain.
Chicago and other cities in America that used to have a large population just don't "get it". For example, my inlaws in New Jersey own three gas stations.
The state keeps on passing new laws and adds "program fees", "fees", etc.... (it's never called what it is; a tax). So my inlaws finally had it, and sold their busineses and moved to Texas.
If the convention business tanks, you can count on the hotels and restuarants getting in deep trouble. Many side businesses, shuttle services, travel groups taxi companies etc, all depend on convention business. When the restaurant shows is in town, they book solid all of the high end restaurants every night for dinner parties. The commercial tax base will take a deep hit.
The attendance goes down for conventions and trade shows as the bad economy affects businesses. The smaller the attendance, the easier it is to find a suitable venue. That said, the NRA attendees love to come to Chicago for a lot of reasons, and it's nice here in May, but hot in Florida & Vegas. Let's hope they are just hinting for some price cuts and not really thinking of leaving.
Even Oprah, is leaving Shitcago on top of all the conventions!
Love or hate her!
The lady is worth a lot of money and brings in a lot of $$$!
Oh, no!
Say it ain't so!
Not just conventions,
But now Oprah's gonna go!
The Restaurant people found out that Food and Water costs less outside the "WORLD of DALEY"!
Let's steal the porn movie awards from Vegas. That is a huge show!
Why stop at making it a casino? Add some bars and brothels next to the casino. One stop shopping all under one roof. Rename it "McAmsterdam" to give it a nice international feel. Can't add the hashbars though, if a case of pop is $100 no telling how much a box of ding dongs would cost. No money made during the after smoke sale.
