Relief is on the Way!

Plans are on the board to hire 86 (that's eighty-six) new recruits sometime between now and Christmas.

That's assuming that there are
  • eighty-six names still on the list,
  • eighty-six people who can pass the drug and power tests,
  • eighty-six people who have waited through about three years of no hiring movement whatsoever,
  • eighty-six people who are willing to disrupt their lives to the extent necessary to become the police in an economy where not only are jobs scarce, formerly "recession-resistant" jobs such as the police, fire and municipal employees are being forced or requested to take off massive amounts of time and a retirement future that is about as bleak as an Antarctic winter day.
And that will just about cover the 591 vacancies and hold the Department through the upcoming 2010 budget year when 1,000 more police become eligible for retirement.

Welcome aboard recruits! Don't mind the water rising in your steerage compartments. It's all part of the charm.

They have waited so long to hire from the last test, that a majority of the qualified recruits have found work elsewhere and thereby leaving just the bottom of the barrel. Go Chicago!

Illinois being one of the states with the highest unemployment rate, I'm sure we can find 86 people willing to jump through some hoops in order to save their home from going into foreclosure.
I myself still think this is a pretty sweet job.

Hello out there future gang and tactical officers!

Welcome aboard troops! The academy might seem like a joke at first, but trust me, it's the real deal. Just talk to the instructors. Just about all of them will tell you that they are assigned there because gangs such as the Gaylords and the Simon City Royals have murder contracts out on them! And I believe it!

Make sure you pay attention to the streaming video concerning anal cavity searches. Also, the two day ten hour class on ethics, "Should you except a free cup of coffee?" is very mind altering.

Try not to laugh when they bring in tranny officers to talk about tolerance. After all, getting a sex change on the city's dime is quite impressive.

When you get out little warriors, look me up. Together on your first night out on patrol we will slay a dragon and then my mighty hunters, we will drink it's blood!!!

86 recruits and not one penny of city money involved. What happened to the funds budgeted for hriring of 200 recruits he promised? Fire department currently has 140 recruits in their academy. They recently graduated a large class. Of course they deserve every new recruit they can hire. yet he can only hire 46 CPD recruits for 2009?

To those of you being offered this job in December, think real hard. I am not one these salty 30year guys saying everything sucks about the job, I am just saying you will be better off getting on with a smaller , better paying suburban department that actually gives a shit about you.
I've only got 10 years on, but I think that's long enough to see how far this job has come, and not for the better. We are understaffed, not under contract and the department morale is laughable.
This job has given me many, many good times and good friends, but no one is interested in letting the police be the police anymore. We are controlled by usless, liberal politicians only looking out for themselves and garbage store front pastors along with the media constantly pissing on our department.
You also have to realistically ask yourself how bad you want to reside in this city? There are a mere handful of neighborhoods where coppers and other city workers live that are still family friendly.
There are a multitude of suburban departments that would love to have you and not living in Shitcago is icing on the cake. Good luck!

Well, you have obviously found the most important website you'll need as a PO. If you've been reading this regularly, you know what sucks about the job. Also rest assured that as bad as the job seems on this blog, it is NEVER quite that bad ALL THE TIME. There is a lot of whining and venting that goes on here but the positive stuff doesn't get on here much.

Police work is a calling, not just a job. Don't expect to be liked, loved, respected or revered by anyone but the ones who already feel that way towards you. Expect to lose most of your friends who will be replaced by new police friends. Others don't and can't understand what you go thru or how you feel about the things you'll go thru.

Expect your entire life to change. New hires mostly end up working midnights and in ghetto districts. It's fast, busy and can be dangerous.

Your # 1 goal each day at work is for you and your partner and every other police officer you work with, to live to the end of your shift and go home to your family in one piece.

Take the job. go thru the academy. When you get off probation, let the dept pay for your college, grad or law degree. That will give you employment option after retirement or sooner if you so decide.

The job is intoxicating, rewarding, frustrating, angry, funny, easy, challenging, boring, awesome, repetitive, unique, etc, etc. It can go from zero to 1000 in a split second. Its been described as 95% boredom and 5% sheer terror. Its been said that the world is a stage and you now have a front row seat. Try it, you'll like it. If not, go get another job. having been thru the academy will never hurt your resume'.

Pensions and pay are better for suburban cops, many patrolman make 75 grand a year and retire with 80% pension. But, if you think the politics are not in the surburban departments, I think you are dead wrong. I met a lot of surburban cops over the years and most of them said that if things go bad for you, there is no where to run. At least in Chicago, you can transfer units. The best thing for the surburban folks, no residency law. I really think the residency requirement will go out once Daley is out of office.

"Last Hired, First Fired", per FOP Union Contract.

Now think, is it really worth it to quit your job to work for a company about to go bankrupt.

A company that would throw you under the bus faster than a speeding bullet!

A company where the TOP Boss (weisel) comes to the gym and fires people 3 days after they arrive.

A company where you might work your entire career and probably will NEVER get promoted because you tested high but others with far less scores get the job you were qualified for. (promoted sometimes 2 and 3 times, while you stay in BLUE and watch their careers bloom).

Welcome to the City of Broken Dreams!

Flipside. "I" worked in one of those suburban departments. The Chicago Police Department is still 10 times better than answering bullshit "barking dog" complaints.

If you want to be a fucking "policeman," CPD is the way to go. All the fucking firearms and tactical training does not compare to the "real-life" policing of shit hole communities that are non-existant in the suburbs. Some of those burbs are just NOW getting a taste of the "beast;" but it is not the same.

To those considering taking the police job:

Yes, it does have its negatives. Like ANYOTHER job. Some people are complete A-Holes. Most people you will work with are fabulous people.

It does have its aggravations, but also has its rewards. While there are a lot of people out there that hate you, there are a lot out there that really do appreciate you.

As no one calls the police when their lives are going right, it is so easy to get a negative view of people, police work and society. It can eat you up if you let it.

And to keep it all you have to do is answer a few radio calls, live in the city and keep your urine clean.

Make up your own mind.

As that fails or doesn't work...

the tubes being forced into his nose so they can flush his system forcefully with GO LIGHTLY (the dreaded laxative) is a hysterically gratifying experience to say the least one for the ages and the you tube!

I'ts also quite LEGAL and puts him away!

if the new recruits were smart, they'd get all the training, pass the Academy, start working, and apply for every Police Agency they can. Then sign on somewhere else and leave before you get stuck in this political 3 ring circus of corruption and lies.

You are missing the point... these 86 will be clout heavy, the ones that were "norn to lead". I admit that they will be fuck ups, but they will be the members of clout heavy families. It is still a good job for them, they will want it and will come on board. You won't get a quality lateral from the suburbs, you will get the unemployable first cousin fuck ups of the clouted. No one worth shit will come off the street and get one of those 86 positions.

It's a good job for me and I don't have any family or friends connected to anyone on the job or in the City. I see this as a huge opportunity and I have an Regular 9-5 job that pays roughly what the starting salary is listed at on the dept's website.
Chicago doesn't do lateral hiring. Who are they going to get to come over some 4 year guy from Oak Brook or Oak Lawn, Riverside, Palos, etc who's already making 70-75k? To work midnights for less money?
I mean no disrespect but that doesn't make sense.
Also, it may seem like a good thing for guys with time on the job to lateral to a suburban department but for those of us without the experience it can be a huge waste of time and money.Alot of those depts test every 2 years openings or not, and they are unrealistic with when they want you to come in and take POWER, psych and medical tests; they pick weekday afternoons so potential hires have to take time and sometimes days off to attend only to be told that they'll only hire 2-3 off the list and you're #5,6,7 etc.

To the guy who said there are only 200 left on the entire 2006 list. There are 4, 2006 lists and they are only on the second one, the June list. They havent even started calling off the 3rd and 4th lists As one post said "I'm on the Novemeber list waiting to be called"

See you at Bourbon St. on Black Wednesday tool. Can't wait to hear your "war" stories. You off probation yet?

Odd someone mentioned ppo's coming off probation going to certain districts. Strange I know a couple landed in 019, one of the slower districts. I would think the officers are needed more in fast districts. Oh how do you spell c-l-o-u-t.
