- A Chicago Police sergeant was arrested this morning on allegations he stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from the Chicago Police Sergeants' Association, a source said.
The sergeant, whose name was not disclosed, is a member of the association, the source said.
He was the target of a joint investigation by the Chicago Police Department and the Cook County state’s attorney’s office.
Officials are expected to reveal more details of their investigation this afternoon.
Supposedly, $600,000 in union funds was diverted to some property scam out-of-state. The sergeant is the president of the Sergeant PB&PA and more officials may be involved.

Rejecting the notion that the legal landscape has changed, a federal judge is standing by a ruling that clears the way for the public release of complaints of misconduct leveled by members of the public against Chicago police officers named as defendants in a civil rights lawsuit.
In a written opinion Monday, U.S. District Judge Milton I. Shadur declined to reverse his decision to lift a requirement that complaints of wrongdoing produced during discovery in the suit be handled on an "attorneys' eyes only'' basis.
Shadur said his conclusion that no privacy interests would be violated by the disclosure of the complaint register files — internal records generated by the city in investigations of allegations of police wrongdoing — remained on firm ground.
He based that conclusion on the Illinois Appellate Court's July 20 ruling in Gekas v. Williamson, 2009 WL 2185509, Shadur said.
In Gekas, Shadur said, the state appeals court held that "police personnel had no rights of privacy in the content or results'' of allegations of wrongdoing made against them by members of the public.

Most boards of directors have in their by-laws the condition that checks over a certain amount must have two signatures to be valid. The bank will have copies of those signatures on file for comparison ( not that they ever look ). However, I understand the treasurer of the sgts. association is the wife of the president, although having a different name. That might account for the two signatures?? Interesting!!

This is not at all surprising.
I've often said, Unions evolve in to entities that screw the membership under the guise of protecting the membership from being screwed by somebody else.
The lesson is, nobody takes care of you like you and if you're going to leave stuff up to somebody else, trust but verify.
Where was the auditing?
If this guy could get away with doing this, he's probably not the only one doing something like this.

Associations, Unions, Groups, Clubs, etc. always end the same way. They form for one reason, but exist for another. For instance, one of the above says, we've got your back, we'll represent for you. Next thing you know the first order of business becomes, how do we perpetuate and keep the Union, Group, Club going? How do we make this profitable? And the first principle... the reason they allegedly formed in the first place? That becomes secondary. Just like with politicians.

The usual suspects. Many have stolen from our pension over the years beginning with all exempts. The gold brain was a robbery that the fire dept. here defeated in their pension fund. And of course daley's nephew and friend. Many more have used it as their piggy bank.

If the lifestyle doesn't match the paycheck for a salaried guy, there usually is unearned, undeclared, and likely illegal income. Not many guys are still subsidized by family or have independent means.

You're right. It does sound far fetched. The arbitrator cannot look beyond the issues that brought him into the fray. If Daley wanted to punish the Sgts, he'd find a way to hit them in the pocket book.......like taking away their 30 mins for "paper work" each and every day. But that's already in the works because once we start swiping out, and we will, they will actually have to stay for those 30 mins.

A person is authorized to sign checks, and then they figure, "who's watching ?",,,and they divert funds.

No, "us" aren't members, but we are interested in people stealing. We are particularly interested when the one stealing may be a supervisor who can discipline us. It's the whole police occupation thing we signed up for.

I would bet that this is not real uncommon though. it is very hard to get people to volunteer to take on these kind of duties, and ofetn an organization will accept just about any warm body just to get someone.
