And Another Shooting

  • A man was shot by police Sunday morning after allegedly pointing his weapon at officers in the South Side Chatham neighborhood.

About 1:45 a.m., Gresham District police officers initiated a traffic stop in the 500 block of East 79th Street after a license plate check revealed the vehicle was stolen, police said.

After ordering the man to exit the vehicle and attempting to place him into custody, officers discovered a weapon and a struggled ensued, police said.

The 38-year-old man then fled on foot and the officers gave chase. At this time, the he allegedly pointed his gun in the direction of officers, and the officers fired, striking the him, police said.

Officers fine, weapon recovered. But as stated in the post opening, how many this year? It feels like way too many.

He probably thought for a second, "Hey why not these guys got no contract they are insignificant in the eyes of their employers besides there are only a few of them out here anyway, why not?" But then realized after return fire "Shit they pissed and I'm going to hell!"

how about a cursory look into this individuals background--- was he out of jail early or given numerous chances to turn his life around.... it does seem like this has been happening on a regular basis lately--- wow richie, maybe being a police officer in chicago is really dangerous and the best you can do is drag out yet another contract negotiation for almost three years---

Stats are near meaningless in Chicago. Ask anyone who ever worked in a front office or in review. The fudge factor is discussed for how much one can "massage" the numbers without drawing too much attention.

Same with Review but to a lesser extent.

If the boss wants lower numbers, the boss will get lower numbers.

South suburban man dies after exchange of gunfire with police
December 28, 2009 6:16 AM | 2 Comments

A 28-year-old man whose mother described him as mentally ill has died after he fired a rifle at a Chicago Heights police officer who then shot him, police said.

Erik Page, of the 3600 block of Western Avenue in Park Forest, was pronounced dead at 11:19 p.m. Sunday at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to a spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Page's mother called police for help Sunday afternoon after her son refused to get back into her car, said Chicago Heights Police Department spokesman Sgt. Keith Applequist. The mother told police that her son was mentally ill and was walking west on 21st Street near Euclid, Applequist said.

Police found Page walking in the middle of the street at 23rd Avenue and Euclid and attempted to stop him as his mother requested, police said.

But Page had a rifle and fired shots at an officer, Applequist said. The officer returned fire, striking Page, he said. Page was taken to Christ Hospital and later died there from his injuries.

Illinois State Police were called to the scene and are investigating the shooting.

I'm thinking what he meant was too many attempts on officers. Which is true. In my lifetime I have never recalled ANYONE being bold enough to even think about fucking with a police officer, let alone aim a gun at them because you knew exactly what was going to happen. Use of force. But thanks to Jesse and Pfleger nobody respects authority anymore.

As for the shitheads. I think someone should send them all to a nice country like China or Iran, line them all up end to end and shoot all of them.

Off topic a bit.
I read the front page story in the 22Dec09 "Chicago Tribune" that, "Big hospitals grow despite tough times".
In that article it said that the "hospitals fought hard and helped defeat a proprosal to allow those age 55 to 64 to buy into Medicare".
What a coincidence; at the same time, the good mayor, out of the kindness of his heart, decides to reward the most experienced, highest paid Officers with an opportunity to retire at age 55 and have the city pay for their insurance until they become Medicare eligible.
And to think that the F.O.P. with their skillful negotiations took part of the credit for this benevolent gesture by the city. Even saying that the coppers have to be crazy not to jump at the chance to help themselves and the city out.
Even Judas Weis was saying what a good deal it is for the deserving long term employees.
The biggest part of the Obama health care reform act is to reduce the coverage of Medicare and raise the rates to pay for the cost of the additional people that are not insured now.
That would have been a double screwing. Having to pay more for Medicare after the city dumps the retirees and they have to pay more for the extra insurance.
It would seem that the hospitals have more clout than the mayor on this issue, except that he can't lose. The people on Medicare will have to buy additional insurance to supplement the reduced coverage. Don't members of his "clan" sell insurance???

Signed, Once again the Police talkin stupid.

Fewer law enforcement officers died on job in 2009

By LARRY MARGASAK, Associated Press Writer Larry Margasak, Associated Press Writer – 1 hr 15 mins ago

WASHINGTON – Law enforcement deaths this year dropped to their lowest level since 1959, while the decade of the 2000s was among the safest for officers — despite the deadliest single day for police on Sept. 11, 2001.

The drop in deaths, cited in a police group's report Monday, was tempered by an increase in firearm deaths. In one horrific November shooting, four officers were executed as they discussed their upcoming shift in a Lakewood, Wash., coffee shop.

Through Dec. 27, the report by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund found:

_124 officers were killed this year, compared to 133 in 2008. The 2009 total represents the fewest line-of-duty deaths since 108 a half-century ago.

_Traffic fatalities fell to 56, compared to 71 a year ago. The report said the decline was partly attributed to "move over" state laws, which require motorists to change lanes to give officers clearance on the side of a road.

_Firearms deaths rose to 48, nine more than in 2008. However, the 39 fatalities in 2008 represented the lowest annual figure in more than five decades.

_Thirty-five states and Puerto Rico had officer fatalities in 2009, with Texas the only state in double figures. Texas had 11 fatalities, followed by Florida, 9; California, 8; and North Carolina and Pennsylvania, 7.

_Six federal officers died in 2009, including three Drug Enforcement Administration special agents killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan while conducting counter-narcotics operations.

_One female officer was killed in 2009, compared with 13 the previous year. There was no explanation for the decline.

_An average of 162 officers a year died in the 2000s, compared with 160 in the 1990s, 190 in the 1980s and 228 in the 1970s — the deadliest decade for U.S. law enforcement. Seventy-two officers died on Sept. 11.

"To reach a 50-year low in officer deaths is a real credit to the law enforcement profession and its commitment to providing the best possible training and equipment to our officers," said the Memorial Fund chairman and chief executive officer, Craig Floyd.

"But we cannot allow ourselves to be lulled into a state of complacency. There are nearly 60,000 criminal assaults against our law officers every year in this country, resulting in more than 15,000 injuries. And, over the past decade, more than 1,600 officers have been killed in the line of duty."

Fifteen deaths occurred in five incidents during the year, showing the potential danger in domestic disturbances, traffic stops and serving arrest warrants.

In March, four Oakland, Calif., officers were killed after a traffic stop and subsequent barricade incident.

Three Pittsburgh officers, responding to a domestic disturbance, were ambushed in April by a heavily armed gunman wearing a bullet-resistant vest.

That same month, two Okaloosa County, Fla., sheriff's deputies were gunned down while trying to arrest a domestic violence suspect.

In July, two Seminole County, Okla., sheriff's deputies were shot and killed while trying to serve an arrest warrant.

Domestic disturbance calls were particularly dangerous for officers in 2009, resulting in 11 deaths, while unprovoked ambushes led to the deaths of six officers.

The report was issued in conjunction with a second police group, Concerns of Police Survivors.

This all comes from the "progressive" mantra that poverty makes criminals, criminals are deprived people who can't catch a break, that everything progressives think people must have is somehow a "right," that guns cause crime, and law-abiding citizens can't be trusted to carry concealed firearms or defend themselves.

Welcome to conservatism. Now go contact your legislators and insist that they provide a "shall-issue" method for law-abiding citizens to get concealed carry licenses.

With only 86 recruits for 2010 in the Academy where are they going to get them from ACORN???

We are down to the bare bones now. I have walked into a number of district stations in the early morning hours. Thanks to Dugan's insane Desk Crew Policy there's hardly anyone there. If there is anyone there it's usually an old man, a female, the WC is back in the office and the unarmed lock-up crew. If someone wanted to spring one of their gang banger buddies, or stage a hit on somebody locked up, there wouldn't be much to stop them.

Stay safe if you are working the desk at night, stay locked and loaded. I have a bad feeling that this is going to happen.

I suggest you start taking a nice leisurely stroll down 47th St. daily in your Sunday best. Bring a nice pile of cash. then, after you become a crime stat yourself, you will be more readily converted from your progressive beliefs.

I am somewhat progressive myself, I believe that in lieu of a consistent, universal death penalty, that life without parole for those who otherwise would get the hot shot ought to be mandated in a max security facility in solitary confinement. For life. Without the remotest possibility of there ever being a parole hearing.

Up in Calgary a Sudanese immigrant lunged at a police officer with a knife. The constable blew him away. Thereafter Sudanese activists protested that the Calgary Police need more cultural sensitivity.

I E-mailed the mayor of Calgary asking what cultural sensitivity was needed given that if you lunged at a police officer in the Sudan with a knife you;d likely get your ticket cancelled as well. Never got a response.

I know and I feel ya. This is happening in every professional environment where the client, offender, patient, etc. can and will turn the tables on you, press charges, sue, play the race card. It's sickening. You have to constantly watch your back, adhere to policy and procedure and document everything. Not that there is something wrong with that if it is reasonable and within the scope of your job. If you are licensed, certified, sworn, etc. that comes with the territory, but to have to worry that you will be wrongfully accused, sued or slandered and then the accuser gets to walk without retribution for ruining your reputation, that is just fucked up. I can imagine what it's like on the street with these animals where things can change in a second.

Thirty years ago, cops were allowed to be cops and there was law and order. This here now, speaks for itself.
