Police Shooting in Bronzeville

  • Chicago police shot a man who allegedly pointed a gun at officers late Thursday night in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood.

Details about what led to the shooting weren't readily available, but the man, in his 30s, was reported in serious condition this morning at Stroger Hospital after being shot in the neck, police said, adding that his gun was confiscated.

The shooting happened about 11:20 p.m. in the 4500 block of South Michigan Avenue.

Cold as hell last night, too. Good job officers.

Off topic: Has anyone noticed that the FTO's are being wiped out. The city budgets for 245 now were under 90. Last week 7 were stripped because of cr#'s and bad Ppo evaluations. I Know we only have 86 ppo's in the pipe but what happens when they start hiring in the future. Also heard that there will be no future FTO's

OT:A federal appeals court in Chicago today overturned the probation sentence given to former Ald. Edward Vrdolyak and ordered his resentencing by a different judge. Vrdolyak now faces faces a likely prison term.

I wonder if this will reach into the CPD. Vrdolyak is close friends and works with Alan Masters who is none other than the father of Mike Masters our civilian Chief of Staff who likes to carry a gun even though he is not the police. It must be ok to do that because his buddy Ray H. said so because they grew up together. Don't you just love Chicago politics. Wake up people and vote Daley out in 2011. Our dept. is being run by civilians and feds. Of our upper echelon the majority is either a civilian or a fed. Either way they have no clue what it takes to work a beat car or put cuffs on somebody. Daley take note that Masters is screwing up big time and it's gonna come back to haunt you in election time. Put him in another dept where he may be better suited. Running around town with a handgun is only going to get embarrassing when he either a) shoots someone or b) gets locked up.

Prayers go today to the young Lt of police in Gilbert, Az who was shot dead on a traffic stop on a busy street last night. Over 100 police units joined pursuit in what turned into a 50 mile chase to get the two offenders who continued shooting and throwing debris from their vehicle...but the officers prevailed when the two were shot in the ensuing shootout. Both offenders hospitalized, ...unlike Chicago no one is critizing the police actions today! Pray for Lt. Eric Shuhandler, who, was murdered while approx. 10 minutes into questioning and running the leads info of a typical/ordinary t/s in a busy mall lot just off street. Two Mesa police officers heard the shot and responded immediately...this as Phoenix just announced the need to cut 230 police positions. God help LEOS countrywide! Back each other up! Off topic:
In one of the previous topics, it was mentioned that COZZI is having a hearing on 15 Feb concerning some issues with his sentencing and incarceration.

I know that the Unions and this site cannot sanction a work slowdown or stoppage, but why can't the word get out there through this site, Northside and Shaves site that over that weekend, do not do any pro-active police work.

Answer you calls, if an arrest is to be made - domestic, shoplifting, etc. -- make the arrest. handle a traffic accident - write the appropriate tickets - but do not make street stops - do not look for tickets, curfews, guns, dime bags, drinkers and the rest.

Let the activity drop to nil over that weekend to send the administration - both at City Hall and the 5th Floor at 35th Street - a message that the rank and file are still pissed and can never overlook this injustice done to Cozzi.

As a silent tribute to Cozzi, wear the blackband around your star that weekend. Any Watch Commander or Sergeant with a pair of balls and who were the police in their day, would not object, but would allow this silent and passive protest.

One day a month should be set aside as a silent protest until Cozzi is free. Perhaps on the date he was incarcerated...

This is an interesting article that rips Obama, Daley and Huberman. Why is it that beside Kass and one or two others, the only good reporting we can find comes from outside Chicago.

It is a long detailed article but I like the quote, "“We’d marvel at how the NYPD was getting mayoral support” during New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani’s tenure, says a former Chicago deputy superintendent. “Mayor Daley is not a cop supporter; it’s no secret that he rules the police department with an iron fist.”

Carothers scheduled to plead guilty to corruption
January 29, 2010 12:53 PM | No Comments
Chicago Ald. Isaac Carothers, 29th, is scheduled to plead guilty Monday to corruption charges, according to court authorities and records.

Court documents previously filed in the case revealed Carothers has cooperated in the federal probe and indicated he has secretly taped other public officials.
Carothers is charged with mail and wire fraud as well as bribery for allegedly accepting about $40,000 in improvements to this home.

The government also alleged that Carothers accepted meals and tickets to sporting events in exchange for supporting zoning changes for a valuable piece of developed property in his ward.

The ideas and the civilians being brought into the Department are an effort to bring the Department into the 21 st Century. These are ideas that have been successful in the corporate world.I recognize them from my previous job.

Having done both jobs, I can tell you with some authority...they don't all translate to the Police Department. It's a different animal.

Some ideas are universal, but stop pushing the corporate lockstep to this hands on, physical, think on your feet, dirty hands, ugly results, life or death job. You will get more of us killed.

Hello All!

I want to thank everyone for your support of my last email campaign against the re-election of Judge Evelyn Clay. Although we were unsuccessful in stopping her re-election, I think it was amazing how we all pulled together. I think we should all be proud of ourselves for trying!

For anyone who doesn't know me, my husband, Kevin Keefe is a Chicago Police Officer. He was shot on the job, almost ten years ago. A suspect was apprehended, and we went through three years of hearings, just to watch him walk away. The case never went to trial. I am sorry to do this again, but I just found out last night that the man who defended the suspect is running for Circuit Court Judge, Dan Gallagher. The election is February 2nd. In my opinion, I don't think he should be a judge.

I learned of Mr. Gallagher's desire to be judge through reading the Fraternal Order of Police newsletter last night. The FOP is endorsing Dan Gallagher for Circuit Court Judge. During the three years that I watched him, Mr. Gallagher's treatment of the officers involved with the case was nothing short of appalling. I realize that his job is to try and get the defendant off, but after watching him berate these detectives for three years, I cannot believe the FOP would ever endorse him. For three years he tried unsuccessfully to prove that the defendant's confession was coerced. He never could come up with a shred of evidence, but you know who's courtroom he was in, so E.C. never stopped him. The majority of his case was based on trying to blame the detectives for not doing their jobs properly, when, in fact, the detectives did a phenomenal job. After watching him do this for three years, I cannot imagine that this was the first or only time. In addition, there were countless times he was late to court, or just didn't even show up at all. We were there, though, waiting for him. Time and time again.

When it was all over, Mr. Gallagher approached Kevin and I outside the courtroom. He tried to convince us that his client was innocent, playing on our sympathy (he must have known he was going to run for judge even then). He tried to make us believe that his client hadn't eaten anything except pre-packaged food for three years, out of fear of being poisoned. Why would we care? I don't know. As if everything that we had gone through had not been enough to endure, he threw one more thing at us. He told us that his client wasn't the shooter, but that he, Dan Gallagher, knew who the shooter really was. If we wanted to know who really did it, all we had to do was have Kevin go to his office, and he would tell him. I don't know why he couldn't tell us then and there, in the hallway of 26th and California. I don't know why he couldn't tell one of the detectives. If he could tell Kevin, clearly it wasn't a matter of attorney/client privilege. I also don't know why neither he or his client ever offered this information to anyone else connected to the case. He never mentioned any other names during the whole three years. Instead, he chose to attack the detectives on the case.

I am sure there are many people who will take umbrage with this. Maybe you went to school with him or he's your friend and he's a great guy. So, to you I say, "Vote for him". I wouldn't know. I don't know him personally. For the rest of us, I say this: Think twice when you vote on Monday. I do know that I watched him in court once a month, every month, for three years, and in my opinion I do not think he would make a good judge.

There probably isn't enough time left to stop him, but what do I have to lose?

Thanks again for your support.

Thank you for your time and attention,
Melissa Keefe

sounds like you may've misunderstood what you heard. click on the following link from the fop website:

http://www.chicagofop.org/Arb_Awards/flsa_comp_time_award.pdf

there you will find the arbitrator's ruling on said matter. the opening paragraph reads as follows:

"Consistent with the Fair Labor Standards Act, 29 U.S.C. § 201 et seq.
(“FLSA”), under Section 20.2 of the collective bargaining agreement between the
City and the Union (“Agreement”), covered police officers can accumulate FLSA
compensatory time in lieu of overtime pay when they work in excess of 171
hours in a 28-day period."

Note the keywords: "covered police officers", "can", "accumulate...compensatory time".

Stay safe and back each other up. We're all we have out there. -012 blue shirt-

Keep your panties on. It is cold outside. But the heat is on in unit 192. Ernestest hefner Brownstein is on a roll. SOS reputation will be nothing in comparison to what eb put on paper what vice has to do. Stay tuned.

For the last time moron. You are in a phone call unit. Thats right a unit. That doesnt wear a uniform and gets time due whenever you want. Not to mention the other perks like cars etc. Do us a favor and come back to patrol where we are riding in one man cars on afternoons and have time due denied regularly. Our just stfu!

For the last time jack there is no cars in vice, wrong unit. Not even lts don't have cars. No perks in vice when it is full of girlfriends of the chief.

And why don't you do vice a favor and call your friend e.b. tell him to let the people in the unit go that are asking to go. Yeah thats right. More than half the unit is trying to get out and back to patrol. the half that don't want to break the law under his twisted reign. e.b. is holding people back who want out of his fkin swingerclub. he knows it don't look good why 20 people are bidding out of ocd to go back to patrol. So go ask him why he won't submit the par forms.

Why dont anyone really look into his sick obsession with vice. You think theres a reason he moved every supervisor out and they're all black now except for 2 out of 10? You think the freak got something to hide? The whole unit knows whats up with his "other" life. So you STFU. Nobody in vice should STFU. Its a hostage situation.

Hey asshole, I go home to my family everyday also but the difference between me and you is that I have a thing called pride. Pride that tells me that anything I do, I'm gonna do it my best.

Then maybe you should consider another line of work. It doesn't sound like you are cut out for police work.

Glad to hear the officers are ok. I just wish they had put the animal 6-ft under, because some liberal judge will eventually let the thug roam free soon to wreak havoc once again.

You all be safe out there.

To the person "hating" on the Captains, too bad you have so much bitterness. It must be hard going to work each day with that much baggage.

Stop aiming center mass! Aim upper chest, neck, and head! Massive blood loss and loss of blood pressure leads to rapid unconsciousness and quick death! Hooah!

A real former Marine MP said...It must be real hard going to work each day knowing you are a misguided star struck barnacle on the bosses ass. Keep working hard and step on your dick and see how fast that skipper will pry you off his hairless cheek kid. If you got to learn the hard way so be it. I say... "Viva hate", its theraputic kid.

Dear Mrs. Keefe, Thank You for your most honest & heartful story. I too worked "Rockwell" and I went there after this happened to your husband...we were shot at, attacked, heads cracked open...I remember one young Officer beaten very badly...because in seconds you were surrounded by hundreds!!! I will "NOT" vote for Dan Gallagher!!! I wonder how many nights Dan Gallagher spent in "Rockwell"...I'm guessing zero!!! Thank You again, Melissa & best wishes to Kevin. F/2

off topic word from f.o.p. is that the fsla lawsuit was settled, and you will work something like 172 work hours a period, but anything over that, the city will pay you cash, instead of hours on the books. it sounds like you wont be able to accrue time on the books, like the old timers used to, say like 2000 hours, and then retire.

1/29/2010 10:32:00 PM

It isn't anywhere near that simple. It would take a while just to explain exactly what FLSA time really is. There is no simple answer. For instance, go to court, spend 45 minutes actually there, in court. Get 3 hours of time. Only the 45 minutes are FLSA time, the rest is just time, no reason you should be forced to take that in money.

The shorthand version of FLSA time is time you actually spend working, not contractual overtime. Work a day off for 8.5 hours, get time and a half, only 8.5 hours are FLSA, the rest is contractual.

FOP has the right idea in asking for the right for all PO's to be able to cash in hours each year like supervisors can do. I believe FOP was asking for 100 hours a year for PO's to cash in. Supervisors can cash in 200.

Most PO's don't have 100 hours to cash in, they use it as fast as they get it.

The current arbitrator's decision on swapping a day off with a co-worker has rules so complex that in practice it will rarely happen.

Nothing negotiated is ever easy. Seems simple but in practice, never is.

He can't "not submit the par forms" when there are spots open. Take the form downtown yourself if you think he's not submitting them.
