Recruiting From Oregon?

  • Chicago has been playing defense lately because of the exodus of trade shows at McCormick Place. But it looks like Mayor Daley is preparing to make the switch to offense.

Daley said Thursday he’s coming after businesses in the Pacific Northwest, emboldened by what he considers Oregon’s head-scratching decision to approve higher taxes on big corporations and big wage-earners.

  • “I’ve always thought America stands for [rewarding success]. You finish high school. You work hard, go to college and you hope to succeed in life. I never knew it’s a class war—that those who succeed in life are the ones that have to bear all the burden. I never realized that. It will be a whole change in America that those who succeed and work hard [that] we’re gonna tax ‘em more than anyone else.”

Daley said Oregon’s tax blunder spells opportunity for Chicago.

What exactly does Chicago have to offer? The tax rate difference? Even with Quinn and Hynes either promising or claiming tax hikes are inevitable? The weather? The chance to live in Comrade Shortshanks Worker Paradise? The opportunity to pay Daley's head tax? Our lovely real estate market?

We just don't see it.

Daley is all about Daley. He will offer whatever it takes to get his kickbacks and the Hell with all of us.

We must rid Chicago of this malignant tumor.

SCC, not to bust your chops but Chicago and Illinois are quite moderate compared to Oregon. Oregon is the king when it comes to "LEFT COAST". Oregon over the last decade has become a socialist paradise. I know Daley is scum etc, etc. Chicago and Illinois is a rigged game. We just can't fix it. Oregon's moron citizens actually want socialism. There is a big difference.

What does he think, we can maybe steal their State Fair and host it at McCormick ?

If one has a desire to view freakish examples of animal husbandry they need only attend a City Council meeting. I doubt Oregon farmers would find Chicago an attractive venue.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Is he fucking kidding?

Who the hell does he thinks pays for all the stuff that he does here. Raise the city taxes? Who pays that? People that "go to high school and succeed"? Who is providing the 16 million or whatever it is to hire people to patrol near the high schools? Not the people who go to the schools, that's for sure. All the layoff days for city workers, who gets those shoved up their asses? People who have the jobs, do well, move up and then they get to give back 12% of their income. Regardless of how they got the jobs. The middle class, who bear an inordinate amount of the tax burden, pays the bills. Could it be said that they "bear all the burden"? The city finances are in the shitter so police, fire, the city workers, they can take the layoffs, no raises, no contract, give backs-is that "bearing the burden"?

And now, after letting Chicago circle the drain, he wants to start telling other cities how to run their show? To quote the late Harold Washington "hubris, that is hubris"!

How the fuck does he come up with this shit?

As a native Oregonian, it was nice to see the good people of the Beaver State acknowledge that if they're going to have government programs - like say police and fire protection and, you know, education - someone actually has to pay for them. Oregon has no sales tax, which I'm sure Da Mare didn't mention. For decades the state funded most of its programs, including education, through property taxes. Finally in the early 1990s, property owners revolted and voted in caps on taxes and limits on increases. But nobody ever bothered to replace the lost revenue. The state has been struggling financially ever since. Wealthy individuals and corporations aren't being punished because they're successful; they're being asked to shoulder their proportionate share of the burden for funding a way of life that directly benefits them.

To: Oregon, We would love to have all the healthy, educated, taxpaying, industrious, citizens that you can send us, especially if they speak English and bring their own jobs with them. It will help balance the hundreds of other people we get in everyday.

Our Short Furor got Boeing to move their executives here. Why, I could never figure out, and left all their factory jobs in Washington.

Then he destroyed Meiggs Field in the middle of the night. No proper procedure followed, $20,000 fine levied, but who paid it. When it should have been presented to Boeing as a testbed for making it the world masterpiece of modern urban aviation.

Be prepared to hand 50, that's right 50 greedy hands under the table money to do business here. And that's just our Aldermen.

Yes, to paraphrase Emma Lazarus on the Statue of Liberty, Give us your wealthy, your educated, your huddled masses of cash...

I just might send this to some Oregon newspapers, and TV stations. But may I won’t, after all we do need some immigrants who are …

I've been suffering ever since I moved back home here. What a disgrace.

I even worked as a temp for the city - dept of revenue. Boy, that was a real eye opener. Don't buy into his crap. I was told when I worked there to submit any ideas to generate revenue as city hall loves them and looks upon the dept positively.

Sure enough, that was the time some moron decided that residents who had burglar alarms had to put a damn sticker in the front door just like businesses and pay every year.

Many of these business also fall behind on paying their owed taxes to the city. I reported this to the manager, but they didn't care. Penny Lane Theater owned a huge amount and were allowed to operate. Guess what? They shut down.

To CEC and my friend SCC,

SCC I most certainly know what Socialism is. I was not trying to insult you in any way, shape, or form. I just felt you weren't being fair. I felt you should have explained Oregon's new law in better detail. I read SCC's headlines every day on this site. I think you do a good job. That doesn't mean you are always right, nobody is.

I am sure you listen to conservative radio and view conservative websites on a regular basis. The Wall Street Journal called Oregon's new law the most hostile piece of legislation to business in United States history.

CEC, you are bold faced lying!!!!!!! Oregon's new law doesn't make business pay its fair share. Oregon's new law that just passed taxes REVENUE, not PROFIT!!!!!!! There is no way for a business to recover those kinds of losses. Illinois likes to add new fees to business. Businesses can absorb the new fees or pass them onto the consumer. Illinois taxes profits, not revenue. Should I own a business and am losing money and don't have profits. Therefore I only pay a payroll tax. The new Oregon law taxes whatever money a business takes in regardless if the company is turning a profit or not.

CEC are you sure you don't work for the Obama administration????? Your post is a classic call from the liberal playbook. Class warfare at its best. I hope you are from Oregon, please stay there!!!! We don't want or need you in Illinois!!!!!!!!

When a company loses money they can write off their loses. U can't write off the tax on your revenue.

This City is dying a slow death due to the mismanagement and machine corruption. Daley's continued "duh" I don't know anything about this doesn't work anymore. We need a huge dose of chemo to get rid of this cancer. The only cure is to get rid of the cancerous corruption, otherwise this city will be one huge section 8 ghetto. Everyone else will flee to escape the doom.

That's what they're doing. Huge rental trucks rumbling thru the neighborhood. 3000 block of Mango is full of Red Cross cars & trucks, flying window flags, and armed guards wearing CDHS jackets at the doorway to the convent.

Shouldn't the neighbors been told who's moving in? And who is paying for all this? Are the new neighbors being screened for disease, and will they be allowed to wander the neighborhood?

Wow! I asked that same question when I got promoted and had to start paying more for health insurance? Why? Do I get better coverage? Do I get to go to a better doctor? Do I get cheaper prescriptions? Do I get to go to the front of the line in the doctor's office? NO! He's a lying fuck. He does the same shit. Fuckin' little cock sucker.

Anonymous,

I'm not clear how my opinion is a lie. You can disagree with my opinion, which is fine, but I'm not lying "bold faced" or otherwise.

Measure 67 increases the minimum income tax from $10 to $150, or 0.1% of Oregon revenues for businesses with more than $500,000 in revenues. Sole proprietors are not impacted by Measure 67. The rest of the increases are on profits, not straight revenue, which makes you the liar, or at least uninformed.

Illinois taxes profits, not revenue.

Just to clarify, are you holding Illinois' system out as a model of proper taxation?

Oregon's new law that just passed taxes REVENUE, not PROFIT!!!!!!! ... The new Oregon law taxes whatever money a business takes in regardless if the company is turning a profit or not.

I think we've already established the lack of veracity of that statement, but in any event that sounds a lot like how I'm taxed, you know, as an individual. Of course, I get some write-offs here and there, but I ask you: Why should businesses get a break when I get jammed forking over 35% to 40% of my income? More importantly, Oregon's tax system penalized individuals, specifically property owners. To me, that's more offensive than raising taxes on business.

It sounds like you'd be in favor of businesses paying less in taxes while individuals pay more (I don't support that)? Or maybe everyone should pay less (which I could support, given appropriate cost containment)? If either is the case for you, then please share with us your ideas for cost reduction.

SCC, thanks for running a great blog and providing a forum for discussion.
