#10 on the Misery Scale

  • Whenever Forbes Magazine puts out a list of most miserable, stressful or otherwise impaired cities, Chicago always seems to be on it.

The latest Most Miserable Cities list is no exception, although there may be some small comfort in the fact that Chicago has dropped to the 10th most miserable city from its ranking last year at third.

The city's high sales tax rate of 10.25 percent was cited as the reason the city is "miserable," as well as long commutes. Forbes also highlighted the city's failure to win the 2016 Olympics last October despite a last-minute plea by President Barack Obama during final presentations in Copenhagen.
Actually, we thought the No-lympic failure was the driving reason behind Chicago's fall to tenth place - no one who wasn't connected to Shortshanks or a clout-heavy construction firm was the least bit saddened by Daley's failure. It actually provided us with days of glee.

Off topic: Is it true that at the last C.A.R. meeting, Weis suggested to one far South Side commander in discussing a robbery pattern there that he 'take a look at what the Chief of the Philly PD is doing...they're doing great things with foot patrols?" I heard that head shaking and muffled laughs were epidemic after Weis's suggestion. 2011 can't get here quickly enough! Lord, what have we done to deserve this?

Dear God, 025 1st watch Lt. K.S. is such a jerk. Why does he have to be such an asshole to a bunch of P.O.'s that are so productive? I guess he wants to bite the hand that feeds him. If Lt. K.S. keeps up his antics then people will lose all motivation to work hard.

O.T. Topic - I just was able to read Blog 501. In it the Supt. states the reason to accommodate officers is so that co-workers can get time off, because of child issues, secondary employment, etc, regarding start times.

According to the Illinois Public Labor Relations Act their are three mandatory subjects of bargainning. The mandatory subjects of bargainning are WAGES, HOURS and CONDITIONS of EMPLOYMENT.

Blame the FOP on this one regarding starting tines. FOP NEVER brought HOURS up in negotiations! BID THE STARTING TIMES FOP. It is probably to late in these negoitations/arbitration -but next time it may be able to be obtained!!! Go Greg Bella.

Hello SCC:

I know you won't believe this, but it's true. (or is it TRU?)

I was strongly opposed to the Olympics, and told people that if we were going to be the host, I was finished with this city & state. I even started planning my departure.

When the decision came down, my sense of true pleasure and enjoyment was second only to sex.

One of the best moments was seeing the look on our arrogant Mayor's face knowing full well that there was nowhere to hide. That there was no one else to blame. That the international community had only two things to say to him:

Sit The Fuck Down.
Shut The Fuck Up.

Meanwhile a friend of mine who fancies himself as the next Donald Trump, bought a property on the South Side for $110K. Then put about another $40K in improvements into it.

After the decision, he walked away from the property and let it go into foreclosure.

Yeah, he's one of those. No shame, no hesitation. A few months ago the bank sold Mr. Trump's property for:

$33,000 dollars

"If you listen very closely, you can still hear the clouted contractors crying."

Truer words were never spoken.

Days of glee? Shit, I am still riding high on that one, and will for years to come. Nolympics for the thief Daley!

If the good Lord allows me to stick around, I am going to have a NOLYMPICS Celebration in 2016!

And if 42 short is around, I hope he hears my laughter and witnesses my joy! That pos got it jammed right down his throat and his plan to steal even more got shit-canned, too! HURRAY FOR US! We would have been left holding the bag!

But duh mare had a 20 year head start on us. The score is Daley 1000 and honest citizens 1. If we can count the big fish IKE "I Made My Brother A Loo-Tenant Instead Of Him Being A Section-8-Tenant" Kabrothers, we can make the score Daley 1000, us 2. But we still have a long way to go, however, we can all look forward to someday seeing Dickee Daley in prison orange!

----------------------------
Foot patrols are highly effective at reducing crime in the areas being patrolled.

The problem is not the concept but that a guy on foot can only cover a very limited area compared to a guy in a vehicle.

Having a highly visible presence is very good deterrent. It might well be useful to implement limited use of foot patrols in some areas.

OT- Say what you want about the "Cozzi Turnout" but I think it is indicative of a larger phenomenon. The CPD as a whole is in a state of shock, and deep depression. When you are depressed you are not yourself, you are lethargic and resigned. That is why the turnout was low, that is why police are laying low and letting crime go through the roof.

I think the Judges really saw a broken down pathetic shell of a CPD there and know who exactly to put the blame on.

Cops really do care about Cozzi but are in a post tramatic state of dispair because of WEIS. Some people don't go to funerals because they can't bear to see a loved one laying there without losing there marbles. Believe it or not Weis and daley killed the city and it's police in one stupid move that put all of the city's residents in danger. All Cops develop a keen sense of fairplay over the years and anyone can see that we are treated unfair in the justice system as a whole. 2/20/10 at time of 1:59am - Dear God, 025 1st watch Lt. K.S. is such a jerk. Why does he have to be such an asshole to a bunch of P.O.'s that are so productive? I guess he wants to bite the hand that feeds him. If Lt. K.S. keeps up his antics then people will lose all motivation to work hard. ---This behavior was even observed in a particular south side district. I like to call it the big head syndrome. A couple years ago, The productive p.o.'s were actually kept waiting outside the watch commanders office for one half hour waiting to get an arrest report approved by the watch commander, who was a captain. A captain for petes sake. This particular captain would not even acknowledge you while he guffawed with certain " friends - you know...people above the rank of p.o. " I could see if it was business in nature, but it wasn't. It was pure man gossip. The skinny captain looked like he couldn't punch his way out of a paper bag, wet yielded the power to keep you waiting. And it wasn't an isolated incident, it was time after time. This power he held over the p.o.s is what really drove people to fail to arrest people because of his antics of having you wait very, very long outside his door to get a report approved. The big head syndrome is evident in the barney fife's of the department that are making the buku bucks and are narcistic in nature. The big head syndrome people are easy to spot and don't have a clue on how to interact with hard working p.o.'s because they never were hard workers. Things have improved a lot since then but lets say if I was driving down a highway and saw that captain on the side of the road with car trouble, I'd keep going and make him wait like he made us wait, time after time, after time. Some people just don't get it.

Recently the Sun Times outdoors section writer criticized the actions of several officers after they ordered several ice fishermen off of the lake and harbor area ice. Apparently the writer felt the fishermen were in no danger and the officers orders were unnecessary.

Earlier today, in Southern Illinois a woman and 2 very young children tragically fell through the ice of an area lake and drowned.

Hindsight is always perfect. Perhaps that day on Lake Michigan the fishermen would have all returned safely without incident if they were allowed to continue fishing on the ice. Ice is never 100% safe, risk of failure is always present. Its pure conjecture at this point as to whether the fishermen were in danger or not. What is absolute however, is that the group chased off the ice that day and their families did not suffer the heartbreak that those of the 3 that perished today are certainly feeling.

Being critical, Im sure, garners more attention, sometimes however, praise is the more appropriate response.

I agree with this post about the department members being in a state of depression. We are extremely sick of hearing so called supervisors of Lt and above "taking it personally." The problem is none of you exempt are doing anything to make our jobs better. None of you are standing up to the supt's staff because of your own self survival, which really means selfishness.

Never in most of our lives did we not want to go to work. Its a lethargic struggle to get dressed and walk out that door and stay alert just driving to work. The day is long and dogged, and there is absolutely zero support. We are all tired of being beaten down and berated by the supervisors in thsi department. No matter we do, we're wrong. No matter what we do, its not enough.

Weis has wronged this department by his decisions overall, especially his selection of supervision. Weis cannot right his wrongs, nor can any of them, because they would have to admit they made a mistake. God forbid they initiate honesty amongst themselves.

The depression caused by this department sadly carries over into our personal lives too. No matter how hard we try to not let it get to us, its always there, always on our mind.

Oh, and FU Lts and above. We know its business, but you made it personal by debilitating our jobs and lives.

This was written by an idiot and someone that has never done a damm thing outdoors. Ice fishermen know what the hell they are doing a lot better than a cop driving past who knows nothing about the ice conditions. I went fishing the other day and there is plenty of ice on the lake, nearly 8 inches. You see when someone goes ice fishing they drill a hole in that ice and then you can see just how thick the ice is. I can guarantee that the cop that ordered the guys off the ice did not drill a hole and check the ice. I think the cop probably just wanted the bosses to hear them on the air and then get an event number.

New York is much more dense in area. They also have a Mass Transit system that enables Officers to get to their assigned posts in a reasonable amount of time. Have each officer asked to submit a to-from to instead request a CR investigation be initiated against themselves. It is always an officers right to demand a CR investigation be initiated against themselves to clear them. let the department do their own investigation, 30 of them, and find you did something wrong.

Let 30, or hopefully more, CR investigations be taking place, it will take many months to complete those In the meantime remember to detail the slightest problem with those cameras, failure to upload video, failure to start with blue light activation, system crash etc.

It only takes a couple of minutes to get an incident number from 4DATA, make sure you do it religiously and get those CR's started against yourselves only when it comes time for your statement be sure to blame the faulty in-car camera systems and poor training in their use. There are many many problems with those systems, we all know that. That is everyone's reason, system problems and inadequate training.

I have not gone through a week without problems from those cameras. Document everything and go down on the radio when you have a problem. Let the Sgt know and ask the problem be documented on the Sgt's log.

This Lt. denied the time off (just because he had a personal grudge against this particular officer) and then laughed his ass off. When I saw this type of behavior, then I knew he is a jerk.

You may be a boss. But in the end, if you act like this, then what goes around will come around.

We had 1 shift to respond to this. Not 72 hours like a normal to from. Fop has been notfied. The to from from all officers is very vague. We are all looking at taking a day for it. Please post this ASAP. Tell all officers to document the working status of the cameras before their tour if the camera isn't working do a to from and get a help desk number. Liv numerous to froma were done but that may not save us! Sinceely the 8th district

Its citywide, coppers trying to skirt the system, not loggin into the system or their pdts, turning it on in the lot for 30 secs, no mics etc, they are gonna start sparring for it per Dugan's office...

REMEMBER TO INCLUDE THE DISCLAIMER AT THE TOP OF ANY TO-FROM REPORT!

"This statement is not being given voluntarily, but under duress. I am only giving this statement at this time because I know that I could lose my job if I refuse the direct order being given to me. (If a direct order is given to submit the reports or state-ments, include the name, rank and star number of the person giving you the order.) This “TO/FROM” report should not be considered a verbatim statement but only a summary of requested information."

Then state that the reason for the in-car camera not being used is continual technical problems with the In-Car Video System and poor training. Constant technical problems render the camera system difficult if not impossible to use consistently and reliably. Poor training renders the officers of patrol frequently unable to cope with the many technical problems associated with this system.

Request an incident number from 4DATA as often as necessary and request proper training. Document each and every little hiccup with that system. Keep a detailed log of incident numbers, keep a log of problems. Notify the Sgt and W/C of every problem. Make sure they put your problems on their logs. They have to leave paper too on why these systems are not being fully utilized.

Generate incident numbers and lots of paper.

so anyone and everyone who doesn't log into the cameras gets a day off suspension?...some districts are barely able to man the cars now, what happens if a bunch more folks are not at work (camera suspensions; can we get t-shirts and hats?)...maybe they can do all of the suspensions on August 14th, the day that time off is "restricted", due to the fact that "the Bud" Billiken and the Air Show are on the same day....

well, speaking of cameras, the ones in the cars and the ones on light poles...is there anyone, anyone (Bueller, Bueller?) at 35th Street, who can stand up (?) and say that the in-car cameras are unproductive, a waste of resources? and, regarding the pod cameras, another tremendous waste of cash and resources, useless and unproductive...."Mr. Mayor, the cameras are useless"....no one has the balls to speak the truth?

Re: Spars for not logging on to in-car camera system...

If the car has it, log on for cryin' out loud!

If not, put it on the air, "squad no camera, no pdt & let my supervisor know."

If you get an error msg or it malfunctions, inform your spvr & desk sgt. notify the w/c, get a # from data, do a quick to-from and stick a copy in the vehicle file.

Why be aggravated with answering to a frustrated old auntie like dugan let alone putting up with him robbing you of 1 to 3 days of pay at gun-point because the department purchased cheap, shitty, second rate, prone to malfunction equipment in the first place?

Just another indicator that the smartest exempts in the history of CPD don't have any real answers to the ongoing massive upward fuckery they're committing. No accountability for them. Only the blue shirts pay the freight for failed, fucked-up, nonsensical policy.

When they're really desperate, they'll institute another wave of "zero tolerance" against the Patrol Division. So predictable you can set your watch to these fools without fail.

...Starve 'em to death! Stop giving them freebies to use against you.

I know KS and have worked for him when he was a Sgt. All he wants you to do is show up on time and have your shit together and then he doesn't have a problem with you. Is that really too much to ask. I never had a problem with him and think he's a great guy.

If the camera doesn't work, then to cover your own ass, go ahead and call the help desk phone number and get a ticket number. Then that is it. You are covered. Too many cops won't turn the camera on and act like they are the shit. In the end you and only you are responsible for your actions.

Hey, make up a "form" to from report for reporting the malfunctions, then you call 4 data and fill in the numbers (beat, car, camera no. and work ticket number) Easy...
