Last Night's Shootings

  • The first shooting linked to a traffic stop occurred about 8:20 p.m. in the 1400 block of South Michigan Avenue, said Police News Affairs [...]. The suspect pulled out a weapon and pointed it at the officer [...]. The officer opened fire, but the suspect was not hit [...]. The suspect fled in an unknown direction.

  • The second traffic-stop incident happened about 8:25 p.m.. in the 8200 block of South Loomis Street, said [...] another news affairs spokesman.

Again, the suspect apparently was not injured, but sped off after the officer fired his weapon...

  • Lastly, an off-duty Chicago police officer fired at suspects who were attempting to rob him in the Vittum Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

Preliminary reports said at about 10:30 p.m., an unknown number of suspects approached and tried to rob the officer on the 4800 block of South Laporte Avenue...

Wait a minute...run that first address by us again?
  • ...1400 block of South Michigan Avenue...
That's what we thought. Mere blocks away from a number of high profile public officials. Mere inches in one case.

It doesn't sound like anyone is in custody for any of these, but no officers injured. Be careful out there.

Almost the exact same address (1400 S. Michigan) on March 19 Gang Enforcement Units pulled over a carload of Four Corner Hustlers from 003 and had I think 4 pistols in the car.

WTF,……………….. First watch Missions in the eight District 008. Once again the 008th District was in a backlog for the entire Third Watch.
Multiple people shot, Aggravated Battery to a bus drive, Domestics. Battery’s, Assaults Missings, Accidents and every other call typical to the south side.
No cars available so it was asked if a first watch car could be pulled off its mission.

Dispatch Q: Can a first watch car be pulled off its mission?
A: “No” was the answer by a First watch sergeant, is a late third watch car available ?.
Dispatch A: ” No” the dispatcher answered and “they have all been busy all day”

At the beginning of the first watch every day the cars from two sectors the (twenty) and (thirty) go on “Missions”, The ten sector is out and can’t handle jobs because 811R must stay on its beat and 815R becomes the “curfew” car, which places the entire first watch out of the game. So its apparent that regardless of what chaos is occurring in eight the First Watch will not be available for help.

Q: what kind of activity is being generated from these missions?
Why must citizens wait an extra hour for service?
The citizens disserve better service.

Way to kill morale for an already weary watch.

These are all jobs that the assistance of the helicopter would have helped greatly. That thing is never around when you need it. The only time I ever hear the helicopter is when it's getting event numbers for the filter plant. I'm not bashing the helicopter. I know it was off that night. Everyone needs days off. Maybe if the city and the dept would add a pilot or two then the helicopter would be more readily available to assist in catching bad guys. We have this great asset that is not utilized to its full potential. Just look at LA and other cities that have a helicopter (many have multiple ones) and how many critical incidents that it is involved in helping officers catch offenders.

Wouldnt it be cheaper (hmm we need to save money)to just have those officers in standby on the ground and only go if called? Maybe that would make them more tactically available. I've heard many time already the helicopter out flying around on gang disturbances. Then someone calls for them and they say, we gotta go re-fuel. They should also have a heliport in the middle of the city to use.

***********************************
No activity at all, and if there is, it is of no value to anyone. Want to check? Go to clear and look at arrests for the first hour of their tour. There won't be any. It's just a way for the 1st Watch to keep themselves down because "we aren't doing third watch's cleanup". I am a Sgt, and the Sgt who lets that happen should be ashamed. And it's not only in 008.

Check any ghetto district on 2nd watch..many officers in court. officers on BS missions,,and that leaves 2-3 cars up (99 of course) to take all the baby daddy removal calls, ray ray wont go to school, selling narcotic calls. the dispatcher always asks to take cars off.. Say F@#$ IT and take the call coming out the mission--help your fellow officers,,get an Event number and be done with it!

The 008th Dist First Watch "Missions" also known as "The 008th wonder of the world". Comm. Kup, you have been a great boss since you came to 008, besides this one matter. I know you are approachable and have an open door policy, but I've been on this job long enough to know not to go knocking on Commanders doors with grips against something they organized themselves.
You have come into 3rd watch roll calls numerous times and thanked us for a job well done and all our hard work on dealing with the cities largest backlog, but you have never explained to us the reasoning behind the "Midnight Missions" (unless I missed it on RDO) that has put nothing but extra strain on an already beat down 3rd watch.
As you and everyone else knows, we go from the gun on 3rd watch, starting with the school dismisals from the 300 schools in 008, to the never ending backlog of calls. And thats NOT our complaint, it's part of 3rd watch, what does suck, is after 8 hours of non stop calls, we should be getting extra relief/help with 1st watch coming on the streets...but we don't, they can't take the calls in the 20 and 30 sector because of a "Midnight Mission" and the 10 sector R cars are forced to leave the 10 sector to help the 1A calls in the 20/30 sector.
I'm sorry, I just don't get it. Is it about activity? Numbers? We dealt with it all last summer and it did nothing but piss people off, and with summer coming soon....all we want is an explaination. Maybe the reasoning behind the Midnight Mission makes sense and we'll understand it better. But until we are explained otherwise, we will just go with thought that the 008th dist is trying to boost the #'s....

But I was so fed up w/ this perp pacing back and forth in front of the dope house pretending to live in the area. It's the same house I've been trying to get boarded up. The dispatcher gives me the same classic line, " we'll send the police. TWO HOURS later
this fool is still out there. So why call? I'd like to just run up to him and go vigilanty but I got a family.

That's right, he bonded out of County and returned to the scene a couple days later to find the (2) Glocks that were thrown from the vehicle during the pursuit. both Glocks had 33 round magazines which were recovered in the vehicle along with a .40 cal M&P. ----------------------------------

Make that GUNS, (plural) a primary and a back up. Any cop who carries only one gun is not a real gunfighter. "Two is one, one is none". A third "hideout" piece is not a bad idea either. The back up and the hideout should both be concealed.

008 is very busy, lots of bad guys, but, all these bosses want is heads. 008 led the city in arrests last year, who cares??? 008 Commander is the one who gets the credit. Some certain Sgt's. think they will get promoted if their team brings in more heads, take a stroll in the tac office and ask around. It's pretty sad to see the morale. No one cares about the quality, just a damn CB#, for those of u that don't know (cb#), it's an arrest.
