Psycho Had Cops' Names

  • A man who last week tried to bring four knives into the Daley Center courthouse faces more charges after authorities said they found almost 50 illegal weapons, including switchblade knives and brass knuckles, in a raid Saturday of his Northwest Side home.

Investigators from the Cook County Sheriff's Department and agents from the U.S. Marshals Service seized 1,600 knives -- including plastic knives designed to foil metal detectors -- as well as one operable handgun, expandable metal batons and a handful of fake law enforcement-style badges from the home of Kevin J. Long, 48. The raid resulted in 47 additional weapons charges against him.

  • They also recovered evidence that Long had collected personal information on certain law enforcement officers with whom he had disputes in the past, according to Steve Patterson, a spokesman for the sheriff's office.

"We recovered numerous boxes of documents from his home, and in those were several pieces of papers with police officer and sheriff deputy names on them," Patterson said. "There was nothing saying a specific threat against a specific person, but it was certainly clear that he was documenting specific people's names."

And just in case you think this guy wasn't seriously goofy?
  • He has also been arrested 18 times since 2000, including for entering a judge's chamber, masturbating in public and violating an order barring him from Northwestern College in Chicago.
A real whack-job.

That's not much of an arrest. Plastic knives?

I don't see the justification to take that property from his home. Of course any real firearms and ammunition would deserve prosecution since he's a convicted felon.

This guy is a goof for sure but I have over 100 knives in my home and the names and numbers of P.O.s in my phone book. It's what Dart wants to make it. I'm surprised Dart didn't find a couple of caged puppies and/or hookers in the house as well.

On my honeymoon in 1980 we went to New Orleans. A “local” approached me and the new wife and related that I had arrested him “last year” at 68th and Halsted. My wife said something like, “Isn’t that nice. You must of made a good impression on him for him to remember you”. Now, retired, if a similar incident occurred the wife would say, “You got your shit with you”?

Kevin Long is well known in 016 as neighborhood nuisance and a chronic beefer. More interesting to see would be how many not sustained, unfounded and otherwise frivolous CRs he's been the complainant on since 2000. As a sergeant, I've handled his CRs as well as been the accused in one of them. A few years ago it had gotten to the point where anytime Long called 911 (which was often), a supervisor accompanied the beat car because it was a given that Long would be filing a complaint regardless of the original reason he called.

I'm afraid to say this is probably not the last that we in 016 have heard from Kevin Long. FYI, he lives in the area of Wilson Park, near the firehouse at Wilson & Milwaukee. Take a look at his mugshot and remember that face.

.....this is so true. I had several gangmembers confront me at Navy Pier while with my family. Luckily, they were good sports about one of the UUW arrests I did on one of the guys. He knew he did wrong. I WAS CARRYING OFF-DUTY, but there is that feeling of uncomfortableness as I held my one year old in my arms even talking to these guys with my wife. They saw me before I saw them. What if their intentions were harmful instead of just wanting to bs with the local tactical guy! And something else too SCC, the guys at the station always are posting their next party or benefit plans with dates and times near lockups,or the detention cells,or the very same offices where they are being processed. This is a practice that I frown on. I always think...one of these days, one of these hellbent bangers are going to do something terrible.

1,600 knives!! Oh My. To second the opinion about carrying off-duty. This is why. When you practice, time out how long it takes you to say "Hey!! You're the mother-fucker that locked me up." That's the time frame for getting your gun into at least your hand and preparing yourself for the next sentence.

True Story.
One day I was standing outside our unmarked car with my partner.
A car drove past, suddenly slowed then came to an abrupt halt and then backed up 1/4 way down the block screeching the tires all the way.
Now, stopped right in front of us the driver, a M/1 kept (somewhat playfully) slapping his lady seated next to him.
He kept saying,..." I told you bitch, I told you that was them. I told you!"
Curiosity got the best of us so we inquired as to what he was talking about.
He said, "I was watching the TV wit dis bitch 8-9 monfs ago and I spotted you two po-leeses on TV and said to her,...Baby see those two guys there? Thems was my A-resting (sic) officers!"
"She didn't believe me!"
He slapped her again and reiterated, "See bitch, I told you so, I told you so! Thems was my 'A-resting' officers," he repeated proudly again, now with a sense of confirmation. He waved at us, smiled and proudly drove off, doing the ghetto head bob all the way, still hollering at his lady.
We couldn't figure out what the hell he was talking about, although we found it truly amusing.
Then it dawned on us. Although in plain clothes, we volunteered to answer pledge phone calls for the Jerry Lewis Telethon at Marina City almost a year earlier.
Occasionally when they returned live to the local host in Chicago, the camera would capture the call takers in the back ground answering the phones.
LMFAO! While we didn't exactly remember locking him up, we were nonetheless still proud that we were in fact his "A-resting Officers!"
It happened over 25 years ago, but we still get a chuckle.
Thanks bro' from your (now retired) "A-resting Officers!"

This guy is a nutjob for sure and needs to be committed for mental issues.

The whole ridiculous media story is all about TOM DART aka Da White Jesse Jackson. Tom Dart has never met a camera that he didn't like and can't go two days without being in the news.

Knives are knives and are not illegal to own in ones residence, even by a convicted felon. The gun issue is a definite felony due to his past felony conviction.

The coppers should definitely be notified that he had their personal information.

I have a feeling that Mr Long will be on the losing end of a .45 one day and that the loosed round will come from a PO.

I carry off duty always and seldom go anywhere in the city for recreation. I go outside the city where chances are less of running in to a former customer. Besides I dislike spending money here.

I also have taught the SO on what to do if certain things happen or if I say certain key words. She knows when to follow cues to move away from me and I taught her what to say to 911 if necessary.

Survival, teach your spouse or girlfriend simple stuff so they don't turn into statues or just grab your arm tightly.

Emery Joe Yost posted on Chicago Clout that he had some high legal bills due to protecting children at the Chicago Park District where he works. The Chicago Park District refused to pay his legal bills to defend himself and was on the hook for his lawyers fees.

I'll bet that this nut job sued Emery Joe Yost.

Any further information would be appreciated.

Yes, he sued Emery Joe Yost. As well as a nun, an archdioese, and a number of coppers. The Corp Counsel and others got fed up with Long's nonsense, and thanks to the hard work of Yost's attorney, Long was sent to the pokey as sanctions for conduct in a CIVIL lawsuit he brought (and was subsequently dismissed).

Thanks to everyone involved in getting this POS off the street. My Street!
The level of creepiness this guy exudes in person cannot be overstated. The POs on the block know his story and warned us. As his neighbor, I used to have to watch this perv walk his little dog wearing nothing but his bitch shorts.
He loved to approach children and always asked a lot of questions.

That is what is worst. Laws should cover Law Enforcement and judges, so our personal information CANNOT be included on public record. No, I did not have my gun with me and guess what, it would have done me little considering the fact that I did not see him until he was in my face! To the person who said not illegal even for a felon to have knives remember he had badges, batons, etc - oh, and handguns in Chicago. To all those who serve & protect, THANK YOU. YOU ARE HEROES. Here's a story about Long and some other heroes in this saga... http://lawblog.jpmlaw.net/2010/03/23/a-profile-in-courage-a-kevin-jay-long-story.aspx It may give a new perspective to those who don't think this is a big deal. And for the one who said he didn't have the balls to use the weapons...he's escalated over the decade and we really don't know. Note, this guy actually commented on editorials about Bart Ross defending him!
