Playing with Fire

Shortshanks, using Huberman as a Judas-goat, is targeting the teachers:
  • Mayor Daley urged the Chicago Teachers Union on Monday to enter “the real world” of shared sacrifice to avert drastic budget cuts that, Schools CEO Ron Huberman has warned, may include raising class sizes to 37 students.

  • Chicago Teachers Union President Marilyn Stewart issued a statement saying that teachers “appreciate the real fiscal crisis facing Chicago Public Schools,” but they don’t believe that means they must give up salary or benefits. She urged Daley to fight for more education funding from Springfield, specifically by raising the income tax.
Stewart isn't doing the teachers any favors supporting tax increase in these times. But she's facing her own election and after all, a signed contract is worth its weight in gold. She'll sacrifice the kids and class size to protect her membership.

If Shortshanks and Huberman were serious about closing the budget gap in the schools and in the city, they'd look at all the money being spent on connected contracts and the like. See the post right below this one - we're talking billions over the past few years.

I'm thinking about mailing the mayor a comb. He looked like an unkempt street person at today's press conference.

And then he started babbling about how this isn't twenty years ago, when times were great. Well, he's right about that. But the current teachers' contract wasn't negotiated 20 years ago when times were great, so that argument doesn't wash.

The ticket to greatness is a better educated populace. Teachers are key to that. Cutting their salaries is NOT the answer.

Maybe, just for a year or two, it's time for the fat-cats, the clouted, the connected and the graft skimmers to 'share the pain', as the mayor put it. Out of the goodness of their hearts, of course.

Lewis Black the comedian had a special where he made a comment about cops and fireman, like oh yea, get rid of the cops and fireman, you don't need them. ( He was being SARCASTIC ) If I was telling the story I would have included teachers. ( I am being sarcastic ) You see, I think cops , fireman and teachers are a necessity in Chicago. Out of of all the people, these three occupations are probably the most important. Education is the key. Look at how educated people BEHAVE vs. UNEDUCATED. Case closed. Thats right...F*ck with the teachers now. Unbelievable politicians.

All you have to do is look at TIF money. This is property tax money that was supposed to go to the schools, police, fire and other city services. Daley decieded to divert these monies into a special fund he controls with no oversite and use it to subsidize his developer friends. TIF's are the reason the city has a so called budget shortfall. If all the propert tax money was going into the general fund like it is supposed to their would be no shortfall. Daleys TIF slush fund is nothing but property tax being stolen from the citizens of Chicago.

Obviously Huberman is Daley's chosen one. But since he's held top jobs with the police, CTA, and CPS you think he could think out of the box to save money before asking for concessions and eliminating positions. For example, there was a story last week how the CTA is cutting back on cleaning busses due to shortage of money, making people worry about rising filthy busses. You would think the current CTA president could hook up w/Huberman and come up with this solution: a program which has teens cleaning busses on weekends in leiu of jail time or as sort of a "Saturday detention." Huberman could use his pull in all three organizations to structure a program that puts these kids to work to clean these busses for free. Instead of the JISC and Juvenile Court syatem just giving them a slap on the hand - guess what you got 16 hours of cleaning busses. Instead of sitting home for a school suspension - guess what - you got two weekends of cleaning busses. Use the resources already there, before you start asking for concessions or cutting jobs, especially with all the crap these kids get away with. Get caught tagging - you're cleaning / painting property in the neighborhood. I remember getting a "Saturday Jug" and I spent 8 hours digging holes to plant bushes in back of the school. Time to cut at the top, and think of another way to use what we already have.

Speaking of scchools....ever wonder why YOUR kid cant get into those A+ CPS schools?? Well here is the answer!

Obama’s SecEd manipulated school lists to favor powerful

Chicago Breaking News reported late last night that former Chicago schools chief and current Secretary of Education Arne Duncan manipulated a system to favor powerful political allies by placing their children in the schools of their choice. The discovery of a list, the existence of which had been long denied by the city, and its composition of mainly high-powered political figures calls into question the appeals system used to reconsider applications that had been denied by the top Chicago-area schools:

Things weren't great 20 years ago either. The CPS laid off 3,000 people that year.

Things weren't great 30 years ago, when they didn't pay teachers for a couple of weeks.

Things weren't great 80 years ago when police officers and CPS teachers were paid in scrip for two years during the Depression.

So it is nothing new to have a financial crisis in the CPS. Yet, in the CPS, administrators hired by the new regime were given higher salaries than the people they replaced, who were either fired or retired--in some instances up to $40,000 more per year. I suppose because they are so brilliant, they will solve all financial problems of the CPS while improving the quality of education Chicago public students receive.

When the impending layoffs come, the first one to be cut will be lowest paid employees and those administrators who have fallen from grace for some reason or another.

CPS does have better teachers and they are firing teachers that are not up to snuff. CPS is doing that right. But here's the problem. Parents with special kids are sending them to CPS schools because private schools lack the special services. Teachers are spending most of their time assisting these kids, while the regular kids wait. Teacher aides, which have been cut to save money, are only for kids that are severely handicapped. A kid with adhd needs to be stopped and refocused several times during a lesson.

Teaching like policing has changed since you have been in grammar school. There is no more clearing a corner with the squadrol or wacking fannies in the classroom. We as the police have rules, so do teachers.

The problem is not lack of revenue.

The problems are:

Dysfunctional families, usually one parent.

Bloated administration staff and a school board receiving insane salaries and pensions.

Teachers, well paid teachers, who don't teach and who can't be fired. Yes, there are many other good teachers who make great sacrifices working in schools where the elementary aged kids sit in class stoned from a contact high from the fumes of the parents smoking crack.

As posted in another post, the resources of the kids willing to learn should be in a Catholic or Military Academy school environment and the trouble makers ought to be delt with commenserate with their behavior.

But the liberals will bitch all the way. You know. For the kids.

You are a complete idiot and cannot spell simple words. Teachers have pay deducted during the school year to receive summer pay. Instead of being paid 10 months the pay is divided into 12 months. They are off 10 weeks during the summer, not 3 months. Many teachers are required to attend school duirng their summer break without pay to maintain accreditation. get your facts stright, asshat.

Where the fuck does all of the money for education go? All of that property tax cash, the lottery cash, federal funds?

Oh, that's right. Luberman needs two cars and some drivers, a PR person and a staff of yes people to help come up with ideas like multi-million dollar "mentor" programs for inner city gang bangers.

Fuck you all.

Are my family, the CPD behind me? Come on...I'll give you guys raises....give the teachers and fireman raises...make this Chicago a great city again. I'm telling it like it is. A cop that is going to run for mayor, it can happen. Look at Jane Byrne and what happened. Stay tuned. I'm just tired and fed up.

"I am just wondering why Mt. Greenwood will have no extra things in school next year. Parents were told that they will have no gym, no art or no music. But the school in Englewood have activities until 9:00 at night.

Jesus, what happened with the ILLINOIS STATE LOTTERY money.

Exactly! That was a "save all" when it was established. A casino will probably be the next "save all". Then in another four years something else will be a "save all"
