Nice Cars!

The pictures are starting to trickle in:

Only 112,000 miles - and all the lovely wiring!

Or how about going to the Area garage to replace this car...:

...with this one:At least you can't quite see out the floor:

Yet.

How about some pictures of the body damage along with the odometer readings? Keep the car numbers out of the shot though - we wouldn't want J-Fed or his minions to track you down.

Very simple solution.
Inspect your vehicle at start of tour.
If defective request a different car!
Document such with a To/From and make a copy for yourself.
REFUSE TO DRIVE A UNSAFE VEHICLE!
Bring car to area, repeat above procedure.
Call for ride back to district.
No Available SAFE vehicle to drive!
EVERY WATCH!
NEEDS TO DO THIS!

Ya want some body damage now, do ya? Give me a couple of days to peruse the lot while I'm helping load prisoners for the court run and you'll get plenty of nice pictures. Promise. Our district, hands down, has the shittiest cars in the city.

P.S. - All you newsie-types trolling this site: stay tuned for pictures you can distribute to the masses.

i wish i had a picture of the pool car i had with 175k a couple of months ago. it had no heat or insulation in the passenger door. however, that thing still could get up and go which means they took the time to put a new engine in along the way. what a waste of money.

OT While driving down Lake Shore Drive this lovely evening, what appeared before my very eyes? Fireworks from the direction of Navy Pier... Let's see..its Monday (not a usual day for fireworks),or the 1st of the month and the City is celebrating pay day, don't think so. Its Pulaski Day which is a holiday for the city that works (or doesn't). Hmmmm, it must have been city workers setting them off right? So, the city or one of its affiliates (contributors) are paying holiday pay for all the people not at Navy Pier or on the lake front this winter night. I would rather see the city give up the nonsense fireworks like tonight and every Wednesday and Saturday during summer and use the money to either pay us, or the people they laid off from real jobs or at least celebrate the real holiday, the founding of our country on the 4th. Instead they cancel the 3rd (when manpower is already deployed for the Taste and along the Lake Front with additional bike teams! Figures!

It is DANGEROUS to go anywhere quickly if you have to fight the wheel to get it to go straight. ok I would be happy to (for a nominal rate of pay and a digital camera) go to EACH district on my days off and take pics of these cars.
I would also love to have a position created that would allow for this to happen.Your safety is FOREMOST. This CANNOT be achieved with the equipment that the City is ISSUING YOU TO USE IN THE COURSE OF THE PERFORMANCE OF YOUR DUTIES(hint for the LAWSUIT that SHOULD be filed on your behalf)

While Im not the police nor care to be under the Weasels "guidance"
I DO care to insure that youse guys are safe and drivng cars that dont require flintstone brakes or duct tape to hold the window to the post. While Im sure that the City will balk at the offer(liabilities you know.....)I plan on doing this. so if you happen to see a fat bald guy taking pics of your cars and the odometers DONT SHOOT ME. In the mean time REFUSE to use UNSAFE CITY ISSUED EQUIPMENT. Im sure the majority of the citizenry of Chicago is 100% behind you on that.I just have to figure out how to go about this so any help you all can provide would be most appreciated.

Stay safe!

FYI...A certain westside district has two wagons, a newer one, (that mysteriously caught fire a few weeks ago), and the "back up wagon"...The new one has about 20,000 miles on it. Guess how much the back up one has....223,000...Thats right boys and girls, the good officers of the westside have to use a vehicle with almost a quarter of a million miles on it! Thank God they got the new one back in a few days...the suspension on the old one was gone...kaput...no "spring"...

The reason we have such shit equipement is that we allow it. As posted already, if you have an unsafe car, down it. Pool car a piece of crap? Down it!....What will the boss say? The answer is, nothing...Will they get mad, or really, REALLY mad.The reality is that you drive a substandard vehicle at your own risk, just like proactive policing. If we downed enough cars, new ones would be found.

To the unpublished moron:

The issue isn't police abusing cars. We have our headcases like any job. This issue we are asking to be addressed are unsafe vehicles:

vehicles with dash lights on; cars with visible damage to the exterior; exposed wiring; visible cracks exposing occupants to the outside; rust through the skin of the vehicle; no brakes, blown trans, leaking fluids, EPA hazards.

If you want to write to the media, have a blast - they're already ignoring the Department shortfalls and taking J-Fed at his word that there were no problems with the car and there was no ice on the Drive.

I have a mechanic friend who told me that the actual odometer milage and true milage on a vehicle can be 5 to 8 percent higher when you figure in the extensive idling that a squad car will go through during its life expectency. Which means a car with odometer reading of 125000 actualy has 8000 to 12000more miles on the engine, heater A/C. ect!

I, unfortunately, cannot post pics of the unmarked assigned us. There are only a few that color in the city and it would be easily tracable. Let's just say one of the p.o.'s has put a new "gasket" on the door. It is silver in color and very closely resembles duct tape. You can still see daylight when the door is closed, but it has helped with the draft and the noise issues.

Additionally, I would submit the odometer reading on these vehicles are suspect because this is CHICAGO.

I mean come on...nothing is legit in this city.

I bet the true miles driven on these vehicles is twice that shown on the odometer. I would not be surprised if it was a un-written policy for the odometers to be dialed back by the mechanics.

....now that we are stuck with vehicles formerly totaled being cobbled together from downed wrecks and put back in service....

Is this true? Can anyone in fleet verify? Are 993'd vehicles being brought back to life?

if so, does any of this apply?
"When a vehicle has suffered damage that would cost more to repair than the vehicle's market value, it may be declared salvage. It will be issued a salvage and removed from the road―a salvage vehicle cannot be registered.
If a licensed rebuilder performs repairs on a salvage vehicle that bring it back to road-worthiness, the "SALVAGE" branding on the title may be changed to "REBUILT." The vehicle may then be registered and used. Before this can happen, though, the vehicle must pass a safety inspection at an Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) Safety Testing Lane.
After that, vehicles eight model years or newer must pass a salvage vehicle inspection. This inspection is performed by the Illinois State Police. It's not a safety inspection. Rather, the police are looking for signs that the vehicle (or any of its parts) was stolen..

More info at:
http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com
/publications/pdf_publications
/sos_dop102.pdf

(it's a brochure on salvage vehicle inspections)

Do any of our so-called rebuilt cars have the "rebuilt" tag that sits in the lower middle of the windshield? Or does the City just do what they want with impunity?

I'm wk'n in a police repair garage and let me tell u,your lucky to get a pool car.Yeah, all the cars have high miles.Yes were told to keep them going as long as possible.IF something does'nt feel right bring it back or down it.Some mechanics are better that others ,like at a dealership.Drive the lot and really look @ the cars, most of 'em are beat up/worn out.some of them are totalled.Which means less cars for you. When I am repairing a vehicle I do it like my family's riding in it.I replace what is bad and road test it to confirm that i fixed it.Not all guys are the same, just like you.
Its not our fault the parts are cheap, told to hurry up and cut times.fleet is all over everyones ass's.most people in upper management have no idea what a spark plug is or how to work on a vehicle but they sure in hell can tell u are taking too long to fix it.If we/you can not keep up with maint's then they will fall apart.3month or less for pma's,depending on idle times, have vehicles inspected more often, have more cars (pools)for you guys. The body shop or shops (the city keeps firing/hiring new ones)can't fix them fast enough or correctly is not our fault either.I would love to have 1 of u guys who is complaining about the work ,work w/me for a day, hell,I'll let u use my tools also, which I pd 4 thru my life/no,the city does'nt buy us tools, yes their very expensive, yes I have 60k in tools at my work, and see how you handle the stress and rush you do in 1 day...Like I said b-4,if you feel or see something thats not cool w/u,don't take it or get a pool if avail.Thats what I would do.
