Newspapers Decline Again

At what point do they actually go under? Because we've been seeing these declines for a few years now:
  • Circulation continues to drop at U.S. newspapers. Figures released Monday by the Audit Bureau of Circulations show average weekday circulation fell 8.7 percent in the six months that ended March 31, compared with the same period a year earlier, while Sunday circulation fell 6.5 percent.

The Chicago Sun-Times' Monday through Friday circulation over the period was 268,803, a decline of 13.9 percent from a year ago -- in line with company expectations after a significant price increase. The Sun-Times raised its newsstand price to 75 cents from 50 cents on March 30, 2009, affecting single-copy sales. However, home delivery increased 4.5 percent. The newspaper's Sunday circulation was 247,416, down 2.7 percent.

Other papers also showed large weekday losses, with the San Diego Union-Tribune falling 22.7 percent, the Washington Post declining 13.1 percent, and USA Today losing 13.6 percent. The Chicago Tribune was down 9.8 percent to 452,145 weekdays and down 7.5 percent to 858,256 Sundays. The Wall Street Journal was the only one of the top 25 papers to gain in circulation -- 0.5 percent.

We've been waiting for the Tribune/Times merger announcement any decade now. There's a bunch of "reporters" we'd like to see collecting unemployment.

Who still reads the Sun Times? The majority of it is ads, then a few articles and a lot of pictures. On top of that they raised the price. Not to mention that it is a liberal rag. Good to see a more conservative paper like the Wall Street Journal doing well.

The Chicago Tribune has got John Kass to thank that it is still in business. John Kass rules as a superb columnist. If it wasn't for John Kass, I would of quit the paper months ago. ( Off topic a little though, in the community of Mt. Greenwood, southwest Chicago, it seems a crew of bangers are terrorizing some homes via burglaries and home invasions. A fellow brother officer lives on the block of a recent home invasion. The fellow brother officer swears that the guys delivering those circulars in the morning are casing homes, garages, etc. The fellow brother officer could be right for anyone paying attention. The same thing happened in our Chatham neighborhood and had to do with a guy trying to sell tickets or magazines. When the homeowner opened the door, the alleged seller of these items would scan the area behind the homeowner to see if any "good stuff " could be seen. Days later, a burglary would occur. Bottom line. Don't open your door for no one. )

Anybody that buys one of these rags on a daily basis is a moron. You can get your main stories online for free. The Sunday papers have been reduced to glorified flyers.

Do not support anybody who advertises in those papers. If you can get a free paper from one of the trucks go ahead, share it with as many people as possible.

Lets get rid of Carol Maureen, Mary Mitchell, Jesse Jackson, and all the cub reporters covering police issues with a anti police slant.

What do the newspapers expect when they do nothing more then spew liberal fascist propaganda bullshit. They actually expect us to pay them money to read lies.

The Onion is more truthful then our two “Daley” papers.

maybe if they reported the news without such an obvious liberal bias id buy them.

You have Roeper, Ebert, Steinberg, Brown, Mitchell at ONE newspaper.

I want both sides or no sides.

I think it is very telling that the truth is coming out of papers from Canada, Russia, and The National Enquirer, who would have thunk it? The majority of media is in the tank for the usurper in chief.

Thanks to the internet I can read newspapers from around the world.

There's an English paper, and TV channel in every major city in the world.

The the infamey of what Shortshanks has done has reached around the globe. When I have sent them on-line editorials I have asked them to look up SCC. Maybe we should have a Foreign Affairs Thread. Only posts from outside the county who will identify the nation of origin.

Stay safe, it would be interisting.

Can you explain in 100 words or less exactly what is "liberal fascist propaganda bullshit"?

Please concentrate on the "liberal fascist" part, I would love to read you try to explain that one.

Please, have at it. If you get the urge to use big words don't hold back, I have a dictionary if you accidentally use a word I don't know.

Fran and Frank:

If the Sun Times goes under, I am sure you could always take the police exam and come on the job. The two of you simply know so much about policing already that you might be able to skip the academy. Heck, you could probably go right from the academy to running the department with vast knowledge and experience you both have.

Sincerely yours,

Who Needs Newspapers Anyway

Ever since the amazing front page spread about Drew Peterson the day Scott Brown won in MA, I vowed to never buy a Tribune or Sun-Times again.

Quite a coinky dinky isn't it that neither paper has printed a fucking thing about Drew since the front page blowjob both papers gave the democrats?

My boycott of the Tribune was reinforced when in typical PC fashion they would not publish the description in the Bucktown bat beating of a 27-28 year-old black man wearing a light colored hooded sweater.

A hearty FU to those two papers.

Buck Naked
(not a cop)

P.S. Is it true a man and a woman turned themselves in in that savage attack?

When you lose the newspapers, you lose a piece of democracy and a way to get the truth out there.

Even with all the liberal crap they put out there - they are still the best watchdogs Chicago has right now.

Same thing was happening months ago in 016 dist on bt 1631. I called the 16 district and left a message with a call back number for the "burglary team" sergeant, identifying myself as a P.O. I had very specific info. with detailed physical descriptions and car info. We have such a horrible department now that this sergeant, despite my message stating very specific info., never even returned my call. Lesson learned, not only do we often provide poor police service to the public, but you really can't rely on other officers to help out regarding crimes in neighborhoods with many police residents. I will never again waste my time with the 16th district.

A few years from now, we still might have two "major" chicago papers, but it is expected that the daily paper will have gone the way of the buggy. Newsprint papers will probably come out one or two times each week with sunday being one of those days. The rest of the time you can read then on line and expect to pay for on-line access. The days of free on-line reading of most publications are also coming to a close. The fall out of this could be the end of investigative reporting.

John Kass is a notable exception-he's too good for Chicago media.

Don't always agree with Roeper but in Tueday's paper he wrote:

"More cops. We need more cops..."

"There are police officers riding alone in patrol cars -- a dangerous situation.

"More cops. No National Guard."

good info about the guys delivering the circulars....some thing like this happened to me when i lived by belmont and cicero about 17 years ago.i noticed that on several occasions at 4 a.m. or so...when the suntimes delivery car would come down my block,it would be a guy driving and a girl would get out and walk the block and hand deliver the papers, while the guy disapeared.so i followed him one night, and he was going in the alleys and checking backyards and garages.i called the police and,the next morning the suntimes, nobody got busted but they did get rid of that delivery guy right away.

Do you expect the newspapers to be on your side all of the time? Do you feel you have to agree with them always or else they "spout lies and bullshit?"

Read something owned by Rupert Murdoch then. A different sort of lie then.

i used to be able to find the Times in diners and hospitals. I would never buy it, but now a days i rarely see them in the trash at the district.

Journalist really blow, they try and report but never research a damn thing.

all they do is quote each other and even use the same footage on the nightly news.

One issue that is being ignored...the advwertising is expensive and worthless. Only 280,000 people see the paper every day. If you own a business, you are buying tremendous waste circulation. Advertising your business in a newspaper doesn't make sense. That is the reasl reson they are failing.

RE LIBERAL ROOTS:

True dat. Most liberals won't buy the paper because it isn't a government hand-out. It's gotta be free...nadda....no dinero.....The libs want it for nothing....are you hearing that liberal editors? It's funny, but mostly the well-educated, conservatives are the ones who still buy this trash, er, I mean the daily papers. I'm going to stop having the Trib delivered to my home because it is full of the bleeding-heart liberal, poor immigrant crap and I'm tired of it.
