HBT Shooting

  • The police Crisis Intervention Team and U.S. Marshals went to a home in the 6400 block of South Bishop Street about 9:30 a.m. to investigate "an escalating series of threats" related to the man's former employer, according to a police news release. It was not believed anyone was in the apartment with him, police said.

When police arrived, the man threatened police with a large knife, then barricaded himself in his bedroom, according to the relase [sic]. A Chicago SWAT team was called in, and after negotiations failed to bring the man out, police first used pepper spray and then a Taser on the man, who was still armed with the knife, police said.

The man then lunged at police with the knife and was shot, according to the release.

Cops are OK.

How come they didn't shoot him in the leg? Or maybe the arm......

Aren't you guys trained to disarm people with knives without using deadly force? I mean, just because he stabbed you, I mean that's your job. You're supposed to endure these things, right? It's part of the job. That's what you get the big bucks for.

How soon will it be before some nit wit starts saying something like what I just wrote?

Other than the good Lt. having a possible broken wrist from pulling his partner out of harms way this incident turned out very well for us. It was great to see that the department and city spent money to have a fully functioning, equipped, and prepared SWAT Team now. Kudos to Unit 153 and 007 for securing the scene and moving the neighbors away from possible injury.
Well Done!

This same man was in custody 3 weeks ago at the same address. Feds and US Marshalls there to take above to Mental Facility per a judges court order. Feds and Marshalls talk to this same man and disregarded the judges order and refuse to take him in. Maybe if they did their job in the first place this incident would have been avoided.

Kids caught violating curfew in three high-crime areas of the city will be sent to Chicago Park District buildings instead of police stations this summer under a trial program that Mayor Richard Daley hopes will give police a chance to present youths with alternatives to hanging out on the street.

Parents of children under age 17 found by police outside the home after 11 p.m. on weekends will have to pick them up at the parks, where neighborhood relations officers will be on hand to talk to them about community organizations and park district programs that can help with their kids.

"The park district buildings will be an easier place for young people to wait than a police station, and an easier place for us to communicate with the parents who come to pick up their own children," Daley said during a news conference at Ogden Park in the 6500 block of South Racine Avenue, one of the sites curfew violators will be brought.

---------

If I'm not mistaken, these "children" under 18: have children already themselves, are most likely already chemically dependent, have lengthy criminal histories, etc. Yep, they want to hang out at the park alright.

Sad fact is the people that actually do use the parks probably don't want these assholes coming there instead of the neighborhood police station.

Did they speak the offender's/resister's language? I mean how could they taze that poor man w/out communicating in his native tongue?
You know Northeastern University criminal justice students have submitted a new ordinance to the city council on this exact isssue. All cops must know all languages before tazing a resisting/fighting subject, or face discipline. That's a lot of training in the academy, isn't it? I can't wait to get my hands on Rosetta Stone in Tai and Mongolian dialects.

OK didn't know this was a spelling class but I'll try it again, maybe slower so you can understand. We the CPD in 007 were called by the U.S. Marshals to assist them in taking this mental to a mental institution per a judges order. After he was in U.S. Marshals hands with no harm done to anyone and no violent incidents, they (The Marshals) decided not to take him to said mental institution (once again by a judges order). Now once again, three weeks later, he is to be taken in (to mental institution) and a HBT situation takes place and we (police on scene) could have possibly been hurt. Now do you comprehend or were you part of the CPS system (possible Robeson or Harper)

Sorry, a typo maybe. I guess you have never made a mistake ooo Great One. The judges order stating a person has mental issues and is to be taken to a mental facility by the police. It is something us older police used to do while working the wagon. It was a run to Madden Hospital or other mental institution because a judge said so. I guess you weren't on the job back then. Or maybe you never worked the wagon Mr. five year on the job tact guy making your save the world 1 bag "Bud" pinch. The point was officer safety (Since the first time they were there to bring him in the mental was calm and no violent incidents took place) but I guess you don't worry about that

When did the re-institute the phone call policy? I thought that was the old HBT days. I guess that tryout a couple years back that was open to the entire department was all smoke and mirrors. Maybe the tryout they just had for the sergeants was too? Or maybe you don't know what you're talking about.

So many un-factual statements here I feel compelled to respond.
First: the US Marshals did visit him in early April for "threat" not directed at any one person. The bad guy locked himself in his room then and after trying to talk to him for a while the US Marshals decided, based on the situation at hand, to just leave.

Second, they, the US Marshals, returned with CPD CIT officers this time because he was now making threats directed at US Presidents present and past, with the goal of making an arrest and interrogate the offender.

Third and to the former SWAT member: I can see from your responses why you are now in the 18th District. They did not pepper spray him after he lunged at other SWAT personnel with the knife, they filled his room with pepper spray prior to making entry in an effort to disorientate the offender as well as with the hope it would cause him to choke on the spray and give up peacefully.

Lastly with the exception of one 007th District Sgt who after being assigned the HBT incident stated over the radio "what we got squad? Hum, you have the car their call me on my phone in around ten minutes or so squad!” the entire scene from start to finish was controlled by the great officers of the 007th District. From the beginning these officers did their jobs in a professional manner securing the area, creating a safe zone for surrounding neighbors and assisted all, CPD staff and citizens, safely, professionally and with courtesy.

May all who work in law enforcement serve their office well and return home after their shift alive and unharmed. GOD bless the CPD
