Can anyone confirm?
- Once again, tonite saw over a THOUSAND gang bangers at North Ave beach causing disruption. Car 6 on scene in the middle of it, calling for cars.Groups of 50-100 bangers fighting. Yuppies running from the beach. Dugan called for cars on citywide to respond to the scene. And its only Monday night. The next accountability meeting for Bt. 1800 aint gonna be pretty. Lakefront is gone, say bye bye.
We've been seeing comments about the downtown wildings every weekend lately. Just two weeks ago, the Districts were picking up multiple armed and strong armed robbery offenders from the El stops. There was another under-publicized incident involving two young ladies beaten with a board.
How long can Shortshanks and J-Fled keep a lid on things?

Anyone who has worked on the West or Southside can see it. Streets and sidewalks both pretty much empty during the daytime, does matter what day compared to years ago. Then when the parks close and especially when the bars close it is like it used to be. Where do they go? Downtown. They know where police are.
Its like that ALL THE WAY DOWN THE LAKE!

the lakefront is bordered by numerous high rise, residential buildings.
all with ample window square footage, for that beautiful view.

I work in 001 and armed/strong armed robberies are a nightly occurrence. When the Ickes were up it was a favorite game of the youth to attack the elderly Asian people living across the street in the Hilliard Homes. They didn't rob them most of the time, just knock them down and punch them. Then they would run off laughing back to the Ickes. The cabbie who got shot in the head and robbed last week was the victim of a citizen from the Cabrini Green row houses. We share the zone with 018 and in the summer time we hear the chaos that is happening nightly at North Ave Beach. We have 12th St. beach in 001 which is a favorite hangout for Latin Kings. And then we have the Taste which is always ghetto-tabulous. Navy Pier is no longer safe to go to in the evening in summer times. Basically, anything that is free is up for grabs. State Street and Michigan Ave. have roaming groups of thugs who come down to rob and shoplift. Afterward they always run for the train. They love to get in fights on the El platforms while they are waiting for their train. And lets not forget the homeless mental you encounter every 5 feet. But how about those flower pots? Aren't they nice?

Yes, i can attest to these problems. There are loads, and i mean loads of gangbanger around the north ave beach area. It's really getting bad. It has a "taste of chicago feel" to it. Every kind of shit head you could imagine is now making their way to that area when it's hot out. 018 really has to step it up b/c that area is getting really bad in a hurry.
Person shot in 23rd dist. at 140 W. Fullerton tonight. Witness stated that a group of black and latino men approached and shot victim. R/O toured lake front from North Ave. to Lawrence and there had to be 500-600 M/1s and F/1s scattered up and down LSD jogging path and lake front. Everytime a cop car would get to them they would all run in different directions. This went on for two and a half hours before we just gave up and said fuck it , Destroy the city you animals!!
Got off LSD at Fullerton @0025. Tons of gangbangers still streaming off the bike path. Bunch of crime scene tape and squad cars parked all over. I'm guessing someone got shot. Only suprising thing is they didn't have all the gangbangers cleared out STILL at 0025.

This store has the bangers frequenting it selling their dope inside away from police most of the time. But hide in the shadows and you'll be surprised to see narcotic transactions happening off the corner with the vehicles driving up for a dime bag. 004th District has this problem because most policing is done on the north end where a lot more action is. But, this spot is getting out of hand. Again it is the teen gangbangers causing the problems. Just like on the lakefront. Where were the parents influence on these kids behavior? Chicago is suffering at the hands of teen punks.

Hello. Old Retired Guy Here. I ride my bicycle on the lake front often. I also visit downtown often. In the last years I have noticed a decrease in Police Presents. Have not seen a Police Officer on the lake front so far this year. No Police, or Security at Navy Pier. I read the mayor is using resources, tax money, to build the Children Museum. You all know the rest of this story.

Offenders fled into the park area - a whole lot of them. Tact Lt in 023 called for helicopter to help search the park area from Fullerton to Diversey but it wasn't working as usual. Great response by 023 beat cars who just about on-viewed the shooting as well as assist from 018and 019. The original conflict appears tohave started at North Ave.
I drove by North Avenue beach yesterday and saw a few gangbangers driving to the lakefront. I checked Chicagobreakingnews.com as I always do and didn't hear about fight at lakefront. I would like to know if that really happened as would a lot of readers.

I can confirm, not a cop but a guy in the neighborhood who listens on a scanner. (Much respect for you the junk you guys deal with and how much your hands are tied.) I listened as they shut down the North Ave. exit ramp and called for closing of the beach. I found it interesting when dispatch was asked to notify the neighboring districts that they were herding people the their way, it was basically said, will deal with any issues when it happens no time for that right now. Then of course the resulting backlog of calls that built up while this was going on. Dispatch rattled of a list that seemed to go on forever up for grabs.

The downtown "wildings" are out of control. I lived downtown for 15yrs and have never seen it this bad. Last year groups of black youths ran around beating people up. I thought with the tearing down of the projects it would improve the quality of life downtown, it seems to have gotten worse. I am not a cop. I lived in Hyde Park for 15 years not a democrat probably the only republican living in Hyde Park. I was riding my bike last night and I saw what happened at North Ave. Having been a lifeguard for the city on the lakefront through high school and college, I have lived on the lake front almost all of my adult life. Thought I had seen it all. With what I saw last night at North Ave and what I saw before that at promontary point was just the scum of the earth coming out to lake. So long lakefront is true. Never I have felt so unsafe. Time to move out of Chicago. This is going to be a crazy summer.

I live in lincoln park and my girlfriend works right across the street from the sedgwick brown line stop when I picked her up from work at 10 last night there were large groups all in baggy white tees all over north ave. Its a bad sign when a 6'3 240 pound guy is nervous waiting in his car while parked at north and sedgwick. We need concealed carry! They've been tearing down the projects but not all the larger section 8 apartments down sedgwick. Its fucked up gangbangers hanging on the corner next to multimillion dollar homes. I ride my bicycle all over Chicago, about 4,000 miles a year (I live in Rogers Park, the girlfriend in Evergreen Park, you do the math and the map). I would not ride on the lakefront path anytime except weekday mornings/afternoons for love or money. It's safer at 59th and California than it is on that path. Sunday, though, I had to escort some students northwards from downtown, and they wanted to take the path. It was a slalom clusterf&ck of idiots and gangbangers. What will set this off? Some yuppie cyclist going very fast will plow into some guys and girls who are blocking the path, and they will beat him to death with his own bike lock for disrespecting their right to walk eight abreast.

Did you miss the news about the two girls on Damen Avenue getting their heads bashed in? Not surprsed as apparently Shortshanks and J-Fled apparently did as well.
How about some history from which to learn? Until the arrival of Joe the Boss 018 had a detail on the beach from Fullerton to Ohio. They arrived in May and set the tone for the remainder of the summer, i.e., no drinking, no doping, no gangbanging, and the 11PM curfew was enforced. For unexplained reasons the detail was removed by JTB. The responsibility fell to an already over taxed Summer Moblie. The 11PM curfew was still maintained. When Summer Mobile was dissolved, the lake front was left to the beat car. Due to the excessive burdens on the beat car, this hasn't worked.
Now, here is the lesson. If the police are removed from an area, that's the area where the lawbreakers will break the law.

An anonymous posting on the "second City Cop blog" indicated there was widespread gang activity at the North Avenue Beach Monday night. It was not known Tuesday morning whether the Fullerton Drive shooting was related in any way to activity at the beach.

I was jogging along the lake Sunday afternoon and was pretty surprised at the number of gang-looking Black and Mexican kids between North Avenue beach and Fullerton. It just didn't feel right and I kind of thought to myself I really hadn't seen that crowd around there before. I don't bat an eye anyone of any skin color that is there enjoying the beach and relaxing, but there were just a ton of kids who were obviously not there for the beach.
I didn't see any fights but figured there were gangs around there judging by the sheer number of some of the groups, their attire, etc.

I tried using the homan square gym as I have for the past several years. Unfortunately this time I was not able to get a locker to secure my belongings. There are guest lockers that always are taken and only a couple of people are using the gym. I talked to other officers who went to the gym and decided never to return because they could not get a locker. Can you contact the commander of OCD and have him take care of this issue.

The south side lakefront beaches have always been hellholes for drugs, shootings, fights and drag racing. I can go back to the late 60's and verify that. 31st beach was the worst, Promatory Point was also bad. The north side parks were always the target of large influx of police when the mayor felt things were getting out of control.
I always jog down the lake from fullerton to north ave and have never had a problem before, but then agaiin i go during the day time. I see a few shit heads, but they are few and far between and act civilizied while down there.

While listening to Zone 4 on the scanner (There's an app for that) last night I wondered....then realized how short of man power the CPD really is.
A little after 11 pm gang fire @ Stockton and Fullerton. Lots of cars respond, draining the rest of 18. While all the cars are up on Fullerton, the dispatcher reels off a list of calls....5 or 6 different calls....she sounded like she was calling traffic on 780...but there is no one to respond. Slowly but surely cars clear from Fullerton, but the damage was done. It's just like an accident on the expressway....the accident may be cleaned up....but it takes the rest of the night to get back to business as usual.
And this was only a Monday night. Give Zone 4 a listen and the weekends...it's nuts.
Observations:
NEED MORE COPS!
CPD Radio equipment is terrible: Coppers from 18 chasing bad guys and can't talk to the coppers in 23 chasing the same bad guys. Chase starts and coppers are calling in over each other...what happens when something REALLY big happens. Radios will be completely useless.
Other Zone 4 observations:
Why do people call the police because the bar they live next to has "loud music"? Odds are the bar was there when you moved in.
How about a curfew for public housing. 11:30 lock the doors.
Give taxi cab drivers taser. Then when someone tries to dash off on a fare, cabbie tasers offender, puts offender in trunk, drops offender off at station....and put an ATM in the station for the offender and pay the cabbie....way too many "theft of services" calls...same for bartenders...guy dashes on his bill for $20 martinis zap the goof.
I can't see how the commander of any district can be held solely accountable as every commander is short 40-50 officers in every district. Let's place the blame squarely where it lies...with the politicians of chicago!

The s__t out at the Point began with the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Anyone who lived in Hyde Park at that time will remember how the Point changed from a place where a small group of friends could sit and quietly barbecue a hot dog (they had little city-owned concrete barbecue things, and nobody smashed them) even after dark, and walk home in safety, to a complete no-go zone.

018 has 2.5 miles lakefront, 020 has 1.5 miles, 024 has 2 miles, 023 has 3 miles of lakefront. The kicker is 023 has no lockup since 2004. Everything takes twice as long due to wait on transport to 019. 023 midnights and third watch rapids are mostly 99 units. Throw in a Cubs game or the general busy bar nights it begins to tie up alot of cars. Throw in a bad night in Uptown and its really fucked. Believe me we hit that lakefront all the time and get some decent stuff from time to time, but you grab one group and a bunch disperse. Then more idiots come as you are in the station processing.

I'm a manager in the private sector. I read the blog by the officer requesting that management intercede regarding the lack of lockers with working locks in the police gym. If the response by the superintendant is an actual response and not a joke, it's probably the best example of unacceptable behavior by a manager I've ever seen. I thought the overwhelming negativity toward him was due to his Federal background. I can now see that there is a very real basis for it.

I tried using the homan square gym as I have for the past several years. Unfortunately this time I was not able to get a locker to secure my belongings. There are guest lockers that always are taken and only a couple of people are using the gym. I talked to other officers who went to the gym and decided never to return because they could not get a locker. Can you contact the commander of OCD and have him take care of this issue.

Unless things change, none of those officers will be in 001 or 018. At one point there were only 10-15 officers to battle the hundreds of shitheads prior to the beach closing. They are baiting us to go out into the sand where we'll be severely out manned and out gunned.
It's going to be a bloody beach at the end of the day and none of it will be mine, if I can help it. Let them videotape, record us, I'm not going to run out in the middle of a mob and try to break it up. That's where one of us will get killed and no one will see a thing.

Why is police understaffed?
According to city budget, Chicago has a budget spending of $6.3B for 2010, and 29.9% goes to public safety.
So, city spends about $2B on public safety. For a city with population of 3M, that's $700 per person. Or in terms of police force of 10,000 officers, that's wobbling $200,000 per officer.
Something doesn't make sense here. Are we having too much waste? Who wants to shed some light into this?
RE: The question of where the parents' influence is on teen gangbangers... Where do you think these "kids" got the idea to get involved with the gang to begin with?! Most of the "kids" I teach are only about 12-15 years younger than their tatted up, gang-color-wearing, drug dealing, air wasting, piece of trash parents. When the generation gap shrinks to the point where its roughly only about 13.5 years on average, you've got problems... I've seen babies tatted up before they're 6 months old so they're marked as gang property... Sooo... the long-winded answer shortened is that the majority of these "kids" ARE being influenced by their parents! It just isn't in the way you'd like to see.
