Friendly Warning

Be careful:
  • OT: CPD EMAIL WARNING

    Word from Information Services...

CPD email web servers have been set up to flag emails with specific "code words"... for the express purpose of intercepting and reading those email messages.

Also, the newer PC's have key stroke readers installed. Spies abound and big brother is watching.

Be very careful on what you send on CPD email.

This isn't the first time we've gotten this warning in the comments. It won't be the last. I-Phones are amazing little inventions, don't you know?

Anyone, at any job, who uses work email and work computers for personal business (or comments unrelated to work) must not understand the repercussions for doing so. And the law is on the employer's side. Your business is NOT your business when you're using work computers to take care of it.

Right, and who's investigating this? Who's gonna rat out a flagged inappropriate email of an exempt? Puleease.

The hallmark of a weak and ineffective command-they have to resort to 'spy tactics' to find out what's going on. Very sad.

Honestly, I think I must have checked my CPD email account a sum total of 5 time since it's inception.

I used to bring my laptop to work and use it's wireless Internet connection. Now I use my smart phone for all personal email.

Besides, the Toughbooks are down more than they are up. But they do make a nifty coffee table.

Your a fool for using your department email for anything other than BS on this department. I know of two people who where called on to the carpet for speaking their mind in emails.

SCC....

Even though we know the policy holders suck, the email system with code word search is actually a common setup in many corporate settings. This is done to catch not only people wasting time and company resources on personal shit but also to catch those who are sending sensitive content where it shouldn't go or viruses before they start.

Contrary to popular belief, the emails are not exactly deleted when you delete something from your inbox and empty your trash. Depending on system settings, the email system can keep a copy of the email stored for a predetermined period of time.

So I would probably stop short of calling it a spy tactic. Just remember to keep things professional on your department email system. If you want to send sexy comments or forwards, do it from your personal yahoo, hotmail or gmail box. Use your cell phone, not department computers. The IT department has to protect the computers from viruses so there may well be mesures in place that may seem like "spy tactics" but they are really preventive maintenance applications.

I love this!

Scc has turned into THE place to get the scoop. It's like they have slowly evolved over the years.

I'm not that important, but if I ever have any news to share, I'm coming right to this website to blab.

If your that stupid to use the dept system, and think it cannot be retrieved you need to find another profession! This system just gives the non clouted officers another reason to get fucked with! Be careful!! I work in information services and you be surprised what is achieved for future use via the dept. computer system!

Also remember that Department printers and copiers, like those in any business anywhere in the world does now.... HAS A HARD DRIVE WHICH KEEPS A COPY OF ANYTHING COPIED OR PRINTED.

It keeps it until full, downloaded or erased. Identity theft rings buy up old copies and printer and mine the information.

So be careful.

Not a cop, I work in the computer industry. ANYTHING sent or received via email is saved forever. After 9/11, the Sarbanes/Oxley ACT came into play. I do not know the retention policies but if you work for CPD my guess files are kept damn near forever at some disaster recovery place. Be forewarned. I have been tasked to recover email many times. Boeing CEO got fired for talking about boning some underling and using company email. When it is flagged you MUST report it or we get fired.
