Fifty-Two "Furough" Days?

This is pretty sad:
  • Anonymous said...

I hear that exempts were told on Wednesday to expect to be required to take "up to 52" unpaid furlough days next year. But the shrubs on city hall's roof look great! And there's millions for useless school safety programs. Beale's private police plan is making a comeback.....same shit, different day!
That would be three paychecks. You've already got captains and lieutenants making thousands more than exempts, pretty soon sergeants and detectives will be bringing home more bacon than the gold stars without having to prostrate themselves before the steaming pile of "leadership" currently in charge of this failing Department.

You're pretty much admitting to everyone that you're J-Fled's and Shortshanks' bitch at this point.

Holy crap! I'm retired and I think I'm making more than the gold stars!

SO if they are earning less than a capt or Lt, will their pension be smaller, as well?

Or are there some special clout club incentives they get in retirement that makes it all worthwhile?

If not, why do it?????

I am clear about the direction the department and city is going. I have not spent 25 plus years on this department with blinders on. The amount of time we put into this job, the energy it takes to do this job, the stress that helps kill our health (2013 we will have no health benefits to address our ailments) and the time away from our wives and children (we don't have the time to perform as an Exempt member and raise our kids) coupled with 52 days, that is utter BULLSHIT! I almost retired this year with the 24 days. Let Daley push the 52 days. He will be running the police department alone. That is just simple fact. It makes no sense to have this job, be subjected to work 24-7; including unpaid days which are a reality to finances but not to our real job responsibilities and expect us to stay. The Superintendent pointed out what we should be doing in his staff meeting. I'm just trying to figure out what department he works for and what bosses he was referencing! We all go above and beyond period! Give up your salary. I forgot, you have a guaranteed contract! You get your $300,000.00 regardless!

You can keep your BS,your stress and you damn furlough days. All in the name of what? To move up this bullshit food chain? You gold stars truly are nothing but Daleys bitches. If you think this too shall pass, you're more likely like to catch the golden egg that passes when Daley shits one out since your lips are attached to his ass and everyone else above you. I like my blue shirt thank you very much.

Some of these clowns would pay to work for a gold star. Those days are the equivalent of being suspended since they don't count towards your pension.

I say fuck 'em. Not one of them has turned down their gold star. That's about two months off without pay. The city should make them pay the full price of their medical benefits too while their off.

ps while your off don't forget to check in at the office and your blackberry, your still responsible for what goes on.

I never thought I'd say this but the best spot on this dept is on midnights in 011, 007, 006, etc. Think about it, with a little time on the job you get a decent furlough, have no responsibility, can't get dumped, you can get home in time to sleep while it's dark out (other than summer), no traffic to deal with. Essentially The Man has no power over you. Handle one job at a time and go home.

I don't feel too sorry for the exempts. think about it, they don't promote you to gold star unless you know someone or kiss alot of butt. and if you kiss enough butt, sometimes you just got to turn around, bend over, and take it back there. really, think about the intelligence level of someone who would want the gold star job anyways: who would be dumb enough to go along with this system? do you think a winning and competent executive in the private sector would take such a paycut just so he or she could be "in charge"? in the private sector do you think you will get top quality work by cutting the pay of your top executives? it wouldnt happen in the private sector. and you get what you pay for. in shortshanks's kingdom, only the court jesters seem to get promoted to the top. this kingdom cannot possibly last at this rate. just sit back and watch it crumble.

Warriors follow leaders, not clowns.

Be safe all.

Can't wait til november.

Slightly OT. Kudos to General McCrystal who spoke his mind. The shitcago trained Prez fired his general in afghanistan recently after criticizing the CIC. what does this tell his replacement? Be a yes man or lose your job. who suffers when a "YES-MAN" general carries out the orders of an unknowledgeable commander? the troops do.

same thing is going on here in da city. agree with the incompetents who know nothing about police work or lose your job/rank. this could explain our poor state of affairs during this "reign of error."

Only an ego maniac or an independently wealthy individual would accept an exempt position!

Watch for many current exempts to voluntarily return to their previous rank or retire.

I would love to learn if these furlough days reduce their pensions?

I think the furlough time does not affect your pension. They use your base pay for pension purposes. Just call the pension board and ask.

McCrystal was a jerk. Before you comment about what a great leader he was you should look at his RoE. Rules of Engagement where troops who were being shot at could not return fire unless they were ordered to. That is fact. This was done so as to decrease civilian deaths( and probably increase deaths of our soldiers), By the way, I am no big BHO fan either. Just know your facts.

The pension is the same they just have to make up the unpaid days like suspension time.

It doesn't reduce your pension, but it increases your eligibility date. For example, 30 unpaid days for your 1st year of being commander, then 2 more years of having 50 unpaid days per year equals a total of 130 unpaid days. That means they have to make up 26 weeks, or 6 months time. But, during those 6 months of extra working, They get unpaid days, so they have to make that up as well. Silly.

Of course they do. When they take those days, neither they or the city are paying into the pension fund. It is an unpaid day. They have to make those days up, the same if you were to have to make up any bad days you would've gotten for a suspension.

So figure, if you do three years with say 20 unpaid days per year, that is 60 days you'd have to make up to be a full pension again.

No thanks!

They get their pensions based on what the salary is supposed to be but I don't know if they contribute at that level or if the city makes up the difference. FYI-captains are considered exempt so if a captain is promoted to commander or above all he/she needs is the three years and a day at captain or above to get the gold star pension.

There is a right and a wrong way to express your opinion in the military or a police department. In Rolling Stone Magazine is the wrong way, and if you dont see that you just dont get it and never will.

This has been discussed earlier and no one has addressed it. The City Department of Law has already determined that furlough days will not reduce the pension, exempt pensions will be based on budgeted salary amounts, not actual paid amounts, so unpaid days will not affect pension payouts.

Here is the problem. With 52 unpaid furlough days, an exempt member's pay is reduced by roughly 20%. In keeping with this reduction, the member's pension payment, a percentage of pay, will also be reduced by 20%. In addition, the city's contribution, also based on percentage of pay, will also be reduced by 20%. Yet upon retirement, an exempt will receive a full pension, even though they made 20% less and paid in 20% less, shorting our underfunded pension even further.

Once again, the exempts fuck the blueshirts yet again to preserve their payout. Mike Shields, any comment?

Mistrust, back-stabbing, dumping at the highest levels, commanders financially castrated, captains dumped from their watches and Districts, critical shortages at lt, sgt. and P.O. level...For those of you who say "big deal" wake up and smell the coffee. Unless you can retire very very soon, what makes you think the next outrage won't be on your level or position? It is not funny, ironic, or poetic justice anymore, it is just plain sad and very, very dangerous. There is nothing wrong with innovative change and restructuring to make things better, but when the very structure of the organization has been decimated, with nothing or no plan in place to shore it up, it is going to come tumbling down on all of us. We won't be the only victims, or families, friends, and the decent citizens will pay.

They can pay the makeup portion of their pension if they want to. All they have to do is pay the difference and all is good. They can also take the money from their Deferred Comp without being penalized if they need to.

I'm a PO and I got a 10% raise with no unpaid furlough days. Plus I don't have a department Blackberry and once I get 10 feet from the station I forget all about the police department.

I work a beat car and if there are 52 shootings and 10 murders one weekend, guess what, I will still be on my beat car! And I will still get the 10% raise and I still will take no unpaid days off! And I work 4-2!

And I don't kiss anyone's ass! How good is this, my job is looking better than a commander's! I've been there through 9 commander's. They come and go, fuck 'em, beat guys endure.

I can do without them and do on a regular basis. They cannot do without me.

Dugan is learning what it means to lose the hearts and minds of this department. Now E. Brown can issue all the bullshit orders and fax's he wants, he can kiss my fucking ass. I won't work for him any harder than for Dugan and there isn't a goddamn thing he can do about it!

Fuck the PO's? Fuck the blue shirt 9161's of this department? OK, let me know how it all works out for E. Brown.

Put Cozzi in prison? OK, god damned CCJ will be a ghost town before I return to activity of pre-weis days.

So fucking what. They lay off all the civilians first, it is in the contract. Every last civilian employee of the police department gets laid off before one PO gets the boot, that is in writing and will be fought for in court if mumbles tries anything.

If they lay off that many, so what? Crime goes up, daley looks worse, elections coming, maybe daley loses. OK by me. I don't have long to go. We still have the medical and I feel sniffles coming on.

Sure it's ok by you as you say, you don't have far to go, but for the young copper on this job with a family it means a lot, there aren't that many civilians left as there is, so this is a reality in the near future, probably right after the next election, when Daley and the Alderman can't be hurt.....
