FOP Hops on Board Bandwagon (UPDATED)
They've posted a petition on-line for anyone to download, sign and send back to the FOP:
- Lieutenant John Andrews of the Chicago Police Department recently expressed his views regarding the operations of and conditions within the Chicago Police Department. Lt. Andrews is now facing disciplinary actions for expressing these views.
Whether you agree with Lt. Andrews' views or not there is a more important issue at stake. That issue is the ability to freely express your views in writing as guaranteed by the First Amendment.
Please print and distribute the following First Amendment Rights petition. Petitions should be returned to Rich Aguilar at FOP Unit 541 via police mail. All petitions will be hand carried to the Superintendent.
Given that there are a few thousand retirees, hundreds of officers from outside the CPD and more than a few civilians who don't have access to the police mail, we're going to take a step that the FOP didn't consider and encourage those readers to support Lieutenant Andrews by using the US Postal Service or a fax to send their signed petitions to the FOP:
- Fraternal Order of Police Chicago Lodge 7
1412 W. Washington Blvd.
Chicago, IL 60607-1821
or Fax:312-733-1367
Send this out to all your friends.
UPDATE: Evidently, the Lieutenants Association had this petition up a few days earlier and has been collecting petitions from their members already. The FOP simply changed the wording in the "Closing" section to "We as officers..." instead of "We as supervisors..."
Funny thing though - the Sergeants website doesn't have a single post about this that we can find. The Sergeants union was the only group that actually came out and advised their members that they were NOT supporting the march around City Hall. That was under the currently indicted president though.

Do you guys know the difference between Constitutional Rights and Administrative prohibitions?
Many organizations prohibit their members from making disparaging comments about the organization or its members in a public forum
Im not sticking up for Weis or the Dept
I am saying that the Dept has the right to discipline Andrews
They also had the right to discipline Pat Hill which I admit they were afraid to do
The Dept is not subjecting Andrews to criminal sanctions such s fines or imprisonment
They are going to suspend him for a few days.
He should have become aware of the prohibitions against ridiculing another Dept member in public when he was studying to become a Supervisor or ideally even before that, like while in the Academy
While Im no sympathizer of Weis' and I applaud the Lieutenant's testicular virility, he has a few days off coming and deserves them
Let him hook the suspension with his furlo and take a motorcycle ride during his suspension
momentum is a beautiful thing...
At least the fop can argue their silence all of these years and say "we sent out that petition that one time.". It's sad that our own union couldn't be the ones delivering this message.
Mark & company only come out of their cacoon during election years. There must be an election looming.
1st amendment? FOP? Since when have they practiced first amendment & speaking out.
"Please print and distribute the following First Amendment Rights petition. Petitions should be returned to Rich Aguilar at FOP Unit 541 via police mail. All petitions will be hand carried to the Superintendent."
A "Petition"? What the fuck is that?
We have to sign some fucking piece of paper so I can have a right to tell the truth?
A bunch of people did that already. I think it coined a phrase "putting your John Hancock on it".
What is the Constitution for? Either we have this right, or I’m living in some fucked up third world country (oh, this is Chicago, sometimes I forget.).
Last time I checked we as Law Enforcement Officers swore an oath to protect these very rights granted to every Citizen of the U.S. (and now, it seems extending to illegal’s, and anyone just hangin’ out here)
Am I missing something?
Don't worry Mayor & Supt. Weis, the FOP will "accidently" lose a few thousand of these signatures.
Just don't forget about making sure Mark gets his six figure government job when he resigns.
Thanks, FOP. A few days late, and $$$ short, but better late than never...ZZZzzzzzzz
Department mail? I gues the policy group will be in the mail room for a while looking for envelopes to the FOP.
That petition was started by the Lt's Ass. who have collected a lot of them already and will be forwarding them to the ... well you know who.
This will be a test case. If there aren't 7,000 P.O. signatures it's a failure in the eyes of the administration.
If we can't get the vote here we won't be able to get the vote anywhere.
All eyes are on us!
In the words of the Great Hawk Harrelson "Don't Stop Now Boy's!"
officers take a minute to print , sign and mail petition to FOP.
Let's support Lt John Andrews for having the courage to stand up for us . Remember John is a Lt. and could stay inside most of the day.
He wrote this letter because he is worried about safety of all Police Officers . Ask family members to sign it to and mail it to the mayor .

THE FOP IS USELESS! They come out of the woodwork only during election time then once inside their oval offices they all get fat, old, and lazy. We need a real union, not a backstreet boys fraternity
Don't forget John marched at city hall with FOP , sign and mail the petition to show your support for John.
Don't be afraid to sign your name on a petition everyone complains .
i'll bet 400 of the 1100 sergeants
are merit and afraid to sign petition because they know in the future lt's will be 100% merit/cloutorious appointed like our best and brightest captains
are the merit captains signing petitions to support Lt.Andrews
of course not they're 100% merit
waiting for a gold star
Hey (29&day)I'm shure Andrews knew the rules of speaking out by his comments on his blog. It makes me wonder what dept you work in or used to work in by your comments "he has days off coming and deserves them" and concerning pat hill - the dept was afraid to discipline her. And how do you know what kind of discipline the dept is going to eventually subject him to- You almost sound like IAD with an inside track. If that pos pat hill didn't get disciplined then he either should he PUNK- For that matter OLD PUNK
I have to agree with "29 & a day" when department members express opinions (especially to the public)that "....bring discredit on the Department" and impede the Department from achieving its goals. And the U.S. courts and the U.S. Dept. of Justice won't touch this one at all. It's an "employment matter" and the "Justices" will not get involved. Eric Holder will not touch this one!
I did learn the "power" of the Department and its supervisors when (39 years past) I was in the academy as a recruit and I refused to contribute to United Way Charities (or somethin' like that) via payroll deduction. The lieutenant told me that the director of the academy (Bob McCann, you are not forgotten!!) did not look favorably on police officers who did not help the Department in achieving its goal, i.e., 100% participation in the charity. I quickly changed the payroll deduction card.
That 1st Amendment right is for the little guy who wants to "peacably assemble" and express his grievances. And those grievances better NOT be about your boss!
All police officers and others should be delighted that this forum created by SCC (thank you!) exists and it gives us the very vitriolic (and anonymous) pleasure to revile and abuse in words those people with whom we disagree or dislike! God bless SCC for having wisdom and cleaning up some of our remarks!
(And the best aspect is that this forum keeps me in touch with the "circus" and the "clowns" even though I'm retired!)
oh Lord, what next?
Nowadays, I'd rather listen to a Lt. rather than a Sgt.
and I applaud the Lieutenant's testicular virility,
You should be careful too
Maybe "intestinal fortitude" would be much better. That means he has guts, nut juicy nuts.
To 29 and a day:
Read the post, Lt. Andrews did not say anything that was disparaging or his own personal opinion which put the department in a bad light. He stated facts and let the read draw the conclusion. Read it again.
Funny thing though - the Sergeants website doesn't have a single post about this that we can find. The Sergeants union was the only group that actually came out and advised their members that they were NOT supporting the march around City Hall. That was under the currently indicted president though.

May he live long enough to enjoy his new job. Have you seen the neck of this guy. I'll bet he is housing clogged arteries.
When I was getting ready to mail mine in I showed it to the Sergeants on the watch and they said that as far as they knew their union was doing nothing. Seems they could just copy the one from the Lt's and send that to the Lt. union or FOP to add to the rest.
Yes but as I remember allot of my fellow Sergeants did show despite our union, having said that our union did negotiate a better contract than the Lts and Cpts.
I've been a Sgt for 14 yrs and I say F&*K our association! I was there at the March on City Hall even though those sissies advised against it!
Hey dumbass Sgt Association...THERE"S STRENGTH IN NUMBERS!!
The Captain's Association had the petition online also. I am a captain and I received it the same day it came out. I signed it and sent it in immediately, as I am sure many of us did.
29 and a day said ....

Albeit he may or may not deserve them, the fact that many others brought far more damaging discredit to this department in their actions but were never "deserving" of a cr much less any time off is of greater importance. Additionally, most of what he states he is only reiterated (rather eloquently) what has already been been stated via other media venues.
A DOUBLE STANDARD once again.
That he took his time, on a personal blog to publish his thoughts and is going to be held to task when others weren't even given the discipline they so justly deserved for their plenitude of misdeeds.
Why I ask do many feel they can anonymously post again and again on this blog - with some outright disparaging comments regarding the mayor, the superintendent, the state-of-affairs of the city, and the various ranks - but how dare he post on his blog some truisms and be held accountable???
