More Money Gone?

We've had it mentioned in a couple comment sections. There is some lawsuit settlement paper being posted in the stations about anyone arrested and held in interrogation rooms or overnight in lock-ups are entitled to money.

What sounds truly ridiculous is that they are offering $90 to anyone held in a Chicago Police lockup overnight if they didn't have a mattress.

A mattress?

Mattresses are havens for bugs and vermin of all sorts. They also provide hiding places, provide fuel for mischief and could conceivably be used in a manner completely at odds with their design. Jail isn't supposed to be comfortable. It's a temporary holding spot until bail or transfer, nothing else.

But now it seems to be a source for payoff money - $16 million plus of your and our money.

I'm a rare bird these days in the city of Chicago. I pay taxes.
At the end of the year, I don't get money back from the IRS. I write a check and pay money in. Same thing with the state. I don't have a little card that magically covers for my grocery expenses. That comes out of my checking account, with dollars I worked for. There are no vouchers taking care of my housing costs. I pay for that. When I go to the doctor, the state doesn't pick up the tab. I do. In addition to all of this, I also pay for any number of social parasites who expect their living costs to be subsidized by my hard work.

As such, to me, police officers aren't “the police”. they're “my police”. I pay them to write me tickets when I speed, I pay them to stop me and make sure I'm not up to go good when I can't sleep and go for a stroll at 3 in the AM. Last year, when my kid TP'd the house of neighborhood rival, I paid the cops to pinch him red handed, take him down the station and do their jobs. They did so, beautifully, and he won't be TP'ing anyones home any time soon (the only complaint I have is that the cops who got him were respectful and kind. I wished they would've kicked his ass and saved me the workout)

(continued, sorry it's long, but I'm fed up with the bullshit)

(continued)

When my police go out on my streets and do the job I pay them to do, I support them- not only with philosophy, but with a big check I write, every single year. When my police shoot down some weapon weilding madman terrorizing the other non-tax payers riding the Red Line 'Soul Train', I paid them to do that, so if you have any problem with this, blame me, not them. They were acting on my behest. When my police show the thugs no quarter and instill fear into gangbangers via whatever means are required per the code of the streets, send both the ideological and monetary bills my way, because I'm the one responsible for it all.

Even though we taxpayers are outnumbered here in the city, our dollars make up for it. There are thousands and thousands of more, just like me, who don't write howling letters to the newspaper every time a cop does his job, aren't showing our faces on the television whenever some producer needs to drum up a bullshit story, pushing a hysterical, baseless anti-law enforcement agenda. No, we're at home, minding our affairs and writing the checks.

So, whenever you disagree with honest cops who are doing their jobs, blame me, John Q Taxpayer, because I'm the one who paid them to do it and I support them all the way. No mattress and you feel this entitles you to a check? The checkbook is open. Keep the jails safe and if needed, unpleasant.

Weis drives morale to all-time low
Comments

September 20, 2010

The morale of the Police Department continues to be an all-time low, not due to the shortage that the department has been experiencing (because many cities are experiencing the same budget woes), but because of the culture that has been altered by Supt. Jody Weis.

When Weis used his clout to get former cop William Cozzi indicted after Weis found out Cozzi had a very good chance to return from his two-year suspension, Weis set a precedent that changed the way police officers do their job. The fact is that Weis changed our culture, and it took an outsider to accomplish this.

In the past, when officers were suspended, they usually learned their lesson and continued to have a successful career. Today, officers know that if they are suspended and attempt to return to work that they can be re-indicted in federal court.

I know William Cozzi, and I worked with him. I also know that Cozzi every year held the top 10 spot of DUI arrests in Illinois. His contribution to the city was commendable.

Yes, he did abuse his powers and used excessive force. You continue to report that Cozzi beat an unruly man handcuffed to a wheelchair. No person should be abused by anyone who has taken an oath to serve and protect, and Cozzi was punished for that. The unruly man was an offender who was taken to the hospital for treatment and only sat on the wheelchair because there were no seats available in the crowded emergency room. He was not a quadriplegic, but an unruly individual who was cursing everyone in the hospital.

William Cozzi was a professional and respected police officer -- his buttons were pushed and he did the unacceptable; he lost control, then he was punished twice and now sits in a federal prison. That's a fact.

Our culture will never be the same. That's also a fact.

NO, Absolutely Not. It's just another indirect welfare payment to the minority community, via the socialist City, Comrade Daley, and his inept city Attorneys . How about They, the locked up ones, upon Court Conviction, pay the bill for the food, police manpower used to arrest them, investigate the case, pay the States Attoeny Felony Review Bills, transport, guard and attend them, the fingerprinting, and computer checks of all of them who were arrested, and deportation costs of illegals locked up here? Once again, the sheeple city Taxpayers pay for this handout, and Dictator Daley does nothing and pays nothing, just leaves the Taxpayers holding the bag, as usual.

I have been out of the loop for a few years at this point, but as I recall, the State requires ( and has for some years) that lockups provide a mattress, blanket, food , and a toothbrush to every overnight guest. I do believe that the State even provides funds for this. And, at one point, i recall seeing some type of kits in the station that contained some "comfort items" for overnight prisioners. those of you who have worked the lockups in the recent past can correct me if I am wrong. But, If I am right, what has happened to these kits or to the money provided to purchase them?

So there is no carbine program? There havent been over a thousand trained? You dont have the option to buy your own? Each district doesnt have 5? You should really at least talk to someone before you post."
----------------------------
This is my second attempt at posting a reply, though shorter than the first ,it should suffice.
I assumed because the city had cut the allowance for handgun practice ammo for every officer there would be a similar problem with rifle ammo.Until now ,due to numerous I.O.D's I have been unable to take or pass the power test.
I took your advice found out that I was wrong and misspoke,in my initial posting. I have the integrity to admit it. While some rifles are in .9mm and .22 cal p.o.'s are indeed trained with 5.56 at the one range in area 5,though you can not just walk in to practice, you are trained there.
Yes ,there has been the option to purchase your own rifle( if you could afford to) ,but the ability to register it WAS dependant upon passing the power test as well as course of fire.
As you are obviously well versed in the carbine program I would, sincerely ask you some questions and hopefully you can answer them for me.
How is it that the time of "15 seconds at a slow walk ,twenty if the locking mech. malfunctions." was arrived at?
Will only 10-4 units be permitted to carry carbines? If your a 99 unit, and have need to go to your sidearm as you attempt to make your way to the trunk of your veh. while in a stress situation ,using the key could be difficult, not to mention, how many times I've tried to push the trunk release inside a squad only to have it not fuction.(despite the fact it worked five minutes before)
One thousand officers trained in two years; Given. How long will it take to train the rest of the dept.? Is it possible to train another thousand within the next two months? How many veh. per dist. per watch have working racks?
My comments:"To little to late." as well as we the few.",well those I offer that they are fact.
The solution,is not in the weapon, but with having"boots on the ground".Supt. Weis talks about cameras in cars. What cars, the ones cobbled together from various wrecks and held together by duct tape, with bald tires?
Officers continue to work 99 in fast districts. Cars are downed due to lack of manpower, and the numbers game continues.
I NEVER said there was NOT a program. As yet, I have been unable to sign up for said class ,due to a computer problem ,I'm told. When will it be resolved?
Crying broke:See the last contract.
Moral and manpower, remain the issues that must be addressed.
I would like to be able to go out and do the job that I raised my hand and took an oath for over a decade ago. To be able to go out and do honest aggressive (not violent or abusive) police work with the backing of the dept.,and actually help people without fear of being thrown under a bus for voicing my opinion OR for doing my job. Hopefully on that much we can agree.
I look forward to your reply.

Big challenge: Finding Chicago's next Christmas tree
September 20, 2010 6:59 PM

Two months after the Mayor's Office of Special Events launched its first official contest to find the perfect tree to grace Daley Plaza during the holidays, the candidates just aren't measuring up.

The office has received numerous submissions since beginning the search in July, but not one tree was tall enough, officials said.

"It's really hard to gauge how big a tree is," said Ann Hickey, program coordinator for the Office of Special Events. "People see this big, beautiful tree and it's huge to you, but it's really only 35 to 40 feet."

The office announced today it is now giving applicants until Oct. 11 to submit photos of trees -- at least 55 feet tall -- to vie for the honor of being Chicago's official Christmas tree.
---

Sure, get suburbanites to provide, for free, what the city used to pay for. What an "honor." It does have potential however.

Let's face it, we don't meet people at their best, some of them have open sores, some have open wounds, some have not showered in months, let alone washed their hair this year, some have pissed their pants and some have even shat themself before entering the friendly confines.

Tuberculosis, hepatitis a,b,c,d,e,f,& g, chlamydia, hiv positive, scabies, herpes and creeping crud are just some of the delights one could get from sharing a mattress with a prisoner.

They don't need a matress, they need a damn shower and basic cleanliness along with some a health class to teach them why their behavior is dangerous.

Who knows how Daley might reappear "in the private sector?" Just when you thought you were rid of Channel 7's horrible, aging Andy Shaw, he pops up again as director of (gulp) the Better Government Association.

Yes, this Sgt. should be putting the boot to the lazt PO's for not doing there job of clearing out the park. Why would you do the PO's job? Make the blue shirts trying to pick-up chicks/dudes get out of their car/off their asses. I'd be embarassed that a supervisor noticed me as a PO, not handling my business on the Beat. Not only do I not do "my job" but I actually think I sound cool bitching on the blog when all your saying is "Hey! Im a dog! Look at me!" STFU ! That's a good 1st order for you, now "tough guy/girl", get to work! I am not Sgt 58 but you can kiss my a$$! (Westside Sgt.)

fuck you coward...go to your own blog if you want to cry anonymously and defend piece of shit white shirts. I love how you put "westside" before your rank, as if this somehow makes you bigger, badder, tougher in the world of policing. I am so sick of these Sgts that think they run this place. This is not the USMC... gone are the days, chump, of chain of command and automatic respect. We follow your "authority" as a courtesy, SARGE, and because things run a bit more smoothly than if we told you where to stick it. Your threat of insubordination beefs are neutralized by my threat of an EEOC beef. Some of the most power abusing, worthless, poor excuses to wear a uniform on this job wear the white shirts with chevrons. Just like our roles on the street has changed dramatically, so has your role as a supervisor. You no longer have the final say so, get used to it. Your pay checks match your egos, and thats about the only difference these days between you and a blue shirt. So next time you ride on my job and insert your "expertise" without it being solicited, please do not act surprised when I tell you to get back in your car and go fuck with someone who buys into your bullshit!

WHY on God's green earth would one NOT carry his/her gun off duty?? Are you people soft?? You are police officers... public targets for the occupation that you have... and people remember YOU eventhough you may not remember them... People can and obviously do follow you home... they will try to rob you, kill you or injure your family... Is it too difficult to put your gun in your waistband to save your life or your family member's life? I read the piece above about the copper being robbed... I was not there and don't know if the officer was carrying... but officers PLEASE carry your weapon at all times.. you paid for it and you have the right to carry it as a police officer.. CARRY THE DAMN GUN!
Please be safe and God bless!!
Sgt Gogo.

Who's going to pay them when all of the claims come in for the bed bug bites,as well as the bill for de-lousing. Hey,maybe they"ll go back to the old days of covering prisoners with delousing powder ,then spraying them down with a fire house !

Maybe we should just put up all the criminals up at the Peninsula and call it even. Then they'll be wanting room service and a masseuse too.

This lawsuit has been brewing for quite a while. We in the D-Unit heard about it around a year ago.

It's laughable, really, that yet again the "rights" of the asshole outweigh the rights of the victim.

How about this...How about the CPD builds an area for victim's to sit, watch tv, get a pop while the detecive is conducting the interview-much like hospitals already have?

Mostly because investigations take time-especially waiting for ASA's to call their ASA friends asking for advice and then call supervisors 3-4 times asking for help.

I am a dispatcher @ OEMC. I worked my rdo today and did some call taking. I took a call from a "getting my life back on track" m/1 citizen that wanted the phone number to call to collect his "free money" for having been in lock-up without a mattress! NO SHIT ************ I tranferred him to 311! Another one for the books.

Stay safe boys & girls!

Yeah. They have money for the a-holes, but none for the police officers put into the behaviorial program unjustifiably. Friggin great. Cops that didn't deserve anything like that and they are going to pay out money to a-holes. Where is the monetary settlement for the cops, FOP? CITY OF CHICAGO? We have not forgotten. Just shows you how the city cares about the a-holes instead of the working cop. It just ain't right. And all those dues to the FOP and all the idiots out there prejudging the cops that have been put on the B.Program and not a cent....yet. Even Obama has rectified a wrong to the many americans persecuted in the world wars. Like we said, we haven't forgotten.

You got that right. That is why I really slowed down from my aggressive police work and I know many other who have done the same. FOP is useless.

This is tough talk from another "dog"... "Your a coward"! Waaaaaaah! Thats right leave the responsibility to the other coppers on the watch. You're the "wanna be" sitting down on jobs while everyone else earns your pay! Take your personals, station assignments and whatever desk assignments you can come up with just to keep from actually earning your living.... Westside means "working police"... I knew I'd have to explain that to a few of you who continually bash "Working Police" out there. Thats right, cry to the EEOC or just STFU biatch! The rest of us would like to see you retire better sooner than later.... No one needs you and your "bad/lazy attitude" backing the "Real Police" up. The only thing worse than you wearing a Chicago Police uniform is......well, I dont know that anything is worse than that!!! As far as who owns this blog? It doesnt belong to anyone but its originator. Its visited by everyone. Maybe you should file a complaint about that huh? Waaaaah!!! Should I apologize too for your failing of the Sgts exam? Or even for your inability to find anyone to put you in meritoriously? I guess everyone knows your lack of worth.... :)

OT BUT, Who the hell is the douche bag sergeant 58?? who works the lake front at Northerly Island? Last night he had a chance to make a positive impression on hundreds of young men by getting out of his car and talking to them when all he did was follow cars and lay on the damn air horn yelling at people that the park was closed. Waving his ticket book out the window. Embarrassing. The kids were laughing at him. This guy sets us back years every night he "works".

Westside Sgt. You can kiss my a$$! The did not write the original comment, but if that is the Sgt. with the white hair that chased all the families away from the sledding hill in the winter. He is an asshole. Period. I also used to work on the westside and not every cop is a slug. But their are a lot of asshole sgts.

While I wholeheartedly disagree with the signs, lawsuit, $$$ being given out, etc. etc, take a look at the following:

Hot meal & hot drink to be provided, however I can't find anything about a mattress.

However, the whole "my police" thing is a little overblown. It's like calling us, "the help".
---------------------------------

You're taking it wrong. It's not meant in that way... but now that I think about it, maybe deep down, it is.

The police *are* public servants. You are 'the help' inasmuch as you're the ones helping my family when I'm away and someone kicks in the door at 3:00 am. It's why a society pays to have you around. You help.

The job of a police officer is that of a public servant; an honorable thing right up there with soldier, fire fighter, etc. If someone is a police officer for any other reason, it's probably the wrong reason (I mean, lets be honest... The profession can be a magnet for dysfunctional personality types) and if they take offense to being in the role of public servant- perhaps they just get off on being an authority figure- then maybe policework isn't right for them. Thankfully, these sorts of people are outliers, based on my limited experiences with the CPD.

So, yeah. The police are 'the help' for the City of Chicago. It's not a menial form of help. It's a critical, honorable form of help that every civil society requires.

I stand by what I said. I view the police as my police, my wifes police, my daughters police, my neighbors police. This isn't meant in a demeaning way- more a paternal one. We're the ones who insist they be there to combat the chaos that would exist if they weren't.

Have you gotten the hint yet?
You get no support here for your plight here. If you were in BA, stop talking about it. We don't care. Now you drag Obama into this? Looks like the Department got it right.
