Officers Shot (UPDATES)

  • 12:13 am -- 2 Chicago police officers have been shot. Reportedly, one officer was shot in the stomach and the other was shot in the arm. The shooting occurred at an address near 7700 South Seeley.

A shooter was cornered at 7701 S Hoyne. Police have surrounded the home. From what I am told, there are several people inside the home, including two elderly people.

Both officers were taken to Christ Medical Center.

At 12:29 am, police were able to enter the home at 7701 S. Hoyne. 4 to 5 people were taken into custody.
Godspeed Officers. Updates as available.

UPDATE: Sun Times and Tribune reporting wounds are not life threatening.

UPDATE: A couple of comments saying that after the "10-1" was called, no one showed up for 5 minutes? We understand we're shorthanded, but "10-1" means you leave the paper job, leave the "baby-momma-drama," leave the TVB at the desk, leave lunch or whatever and get to the scene. Can anyone update us on what happened? How many cars was 006 unmanned? What were the backlogged jobs?

I wasn't there, but was told by someone on the scene that a 10-1 went out 2 P.O.'s shot. After 5 minutes still no police help on the scene. Daley has an eye on re-election and is trying to keep costs down until he gets another term. Then all taxes will double. Until then, the game he is playing is "victims or votes."

After the officers were shot, the 006 supervisor on the scene said to the dispatcher,

"We called a 10-1 five minutes ago and no one has shown up!"

Officers, there is not enough manpower on the streets to effectively do our job! Maybe a few one man cars on minutes.

022 was sent cars to assist because there were no cars available in 006 to respond....WTF!!

A tough time for officers all over our country. People just have zero respect for the law anymore. It starts at a young age and children learn that disrespect from their parents. There are a few that manage to stay on the good side, but the bad far out them.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the officers. I hope they make a quick and complete recovery.

PLEASE, you all be safe out there!

These comments are bullshit! There were cops there instantly after the 10-1 was called! The sgt who said that was completely exagerating. Most of the cars en route were demande to block traffic for the ambulance and make sure the thru streets were open for the ambo to make a quick exit. And to all you people saying you weren't there and that you heard from someone what happened, go fuck yourself! 006 district did fantastic job tonight and my prayers are with those shot tonight. Be thankful these god was on our side for once!

my partner and i were at 63 damen on zone 6 when the "were getting a ticket from zone 8 of a 10-1, officer shot" from 63/damen to the scene, we were one of the first cars there and only cars there for what seemed like at least a few minutes. not blaming officers or dispatchers, but there was definetly a breakdown somewhere. eventually there was a great response, great job by all on scene. god speed officers, enjoy the rest of the year off. be safe everyone!

Get well soon officers. What's the plan of attack now? Mass parkers? This is happening way too often.2 shot..10-1 slow response (due to lack of manpower) what is it gonna take to change things? Obviously the worst possible scenario is a dead P.O. and we all know that does not matter to this city. That beady eyed coward is waving the white flag to the enemy and he has accepted our surrender. I like many of you saw this coming. There is NO FEAR anymore not one bit of it, and I like many of you hold this coward personally responsible for the injured or dead P.O.'s.JODY GET THE FUCK OUT...Be safe everyone

The news should play this up good. J-Fled must resign for the good of humanity.I hope the officers recover well after a long and professional physical therapy. Also the march should do laps around and START at 35th and michigan THEN we march to city hall in unison it could be lots of hell for shity hall. The shorty could fire J-Jag from China and not have to look at his big crying mellon head.

First, thank god the officers are alive, but they still shouldn't have been shot.

Don't know if this is true, but news channel said that six officers were executing the search warrant. Back in the day we were silly enough to do warrants with three or four officers, but times are different.

Don't know circumstances behind obtaining and serving this particular warrant, but some things to think about when formulating plans - time of execution, requesting swat entry on gun warrants, have more officers than you think you need.

You can also request bodies from TRU or MSF as back up. And sadly that has to be done because there are not enough officers assigned to the districts.

As a police spouse I think the families of fallen officers (in past incidents) should sue for wrongful death. The conditions that all of you work in is ridiculous, 6 years ago my husband was in a shooting and there were hundreds of officers on scene within probably 2 minutes. 60 million to stop violence at CPS but nothing for all of you to have more officers to fight the animals ? The shortage of officers is THE WEAPON for the criminals, forget the guns.

Whoever wrote those comments was not on scene.

There were several cars there within a minute or two, and then supervisors (with good intentions) were calling for cars at other locations to block off the route to the hospital for the injured officers. The sergeant who said this on the air was making an exaggerated comment in the heat of the moment, where we all know seconds seem like minutes. All 006 District midnight cars were on scene. I saw maybe 60-80 officers out there total. I thought it was a good response for a chaotic situation.

A department spokesperson said one officer was struck in the arm, the other was struck in the arm and leg. Both were treated and released from Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn

Daley will present the detectives Medals for 'courageous restraint'
just as Obama has proposed for troops in Afghanistan.

In a separate incident this morning, Chicago police said a female officer was shot at as she drove her own car to work at Belmont District headquarters.

Bullets hit the officer's car, but she was not hurt. There is no word yet on the search for a suspect in that incident.

I heard the same thing in 003 last week. Several units arrived on the scene and caught a guy with a gun around 71st & Indiana. A short while later, a car received a call of a disturbance involving 20 teenaged girls fighting with knives. A car on the scene of that disturbance called for assisting units. NO ONE RESPONDED. Finally, after about three minutes, a Sgt. on the scene where the offender was arrested with a gun informed the dispatcher that only one car from 003 was going into the station on the arrest (assisting TRU), and that all of the other cars were 'free and clear to respond to the disturbance call." Only after the Sgt. said this on the air did other cars answer up that they were responding to the disturbance. It was disturbing to hear this on the air. I assumed that officers were at least BACKING EACH OTHER UP on calls, but this doesn't seem to be the case, does it? It's just what many of us feared, that many of our comrades on the street are using the whole 'discontent with Jody' thing to hide and do little or nothing, even at the expense of their co-workers, and that is just shameful. Hopefully, more supervisors on the street are paying attention to this and will step up and clear the bums over the air so that the workload can be shared more evenly, which might even protect some of us from needless injury due to lack of backup on the hot calls.

MUNOZ finally admitted that CPD is down more than 2,200 P.O.'s and that the Aldermen signed off on a budget for the authorized strength(would not say how many P.O.'s).They don't undertand why the Mayor has not hired the correct amount of P.O.'s,went on to say that because of the constant turnover of P.O.'s that retire, why has the Mayor not maintained the budgeted amount of P.O.'s. Wants the Mayor to restart the hiring process. The interview lasted about 5 or 6 minutes. The anchor's continued to press ALD. FIORETI for answer to the question that continues the to make the rounds: Will he run for Mayor,he kept evading the question. Things are starting to get a little interesting.

****** Rumor Mill ********
****** This just in ******

Donahue met with Mayor and discussed Protest march. Daley asked for it not to be around city hall. They agree to have it at 35th street, this way Daley can dodge most media and JFled has to do all the media interviews. Daley will be in Michigan vacation home Sept 15th through the 17th and then leaves for China so they agree the 15th will be the march date when Daley is out of town and won't have to comment on it.

Daley hints that on Sept 20th(while Daley is in China and won't have to comment on it)
J-Fled may take a new role as head of OEMC and if the contract can be worked out he may even make the move on the 17th. Donahue states that the march will be called off if that occurs.

Daley hints that he may run again for mayor and hints that Donahue may have a spot in the new regime. Daley asks for support the next few months. Donahue asks for more police and Daley gets angry and changes subject.

Donahue asks for 2 Detective classes to start in Dec. or Jan. and Daley agrees but may have to wait til Feb. in hopes of more Stimulus money or Dept Homeland Defense money.

Donahue brings up Merit promotions and Daley ends meeting. They pick a date in Oct. to meet again.

If this BS is true I say F it we walk city Hall. More people will see us and more people can attend since there is more parking options and public transportation options.

If you want to fall in line and be a sheep for the mayor and the weak FOP go to Headquarters where no one will see you and the people who do don't give a shit.

BUT if you are truly tried of

• Having a backlog before you even step in your car
• Driving 99 during midnights
• NOT HAVING BACK UP ON A 10-1
• Having shit equipment
• No Dt or Sarge test in years
• Stupid Event number missions
• etc etc could be here all day

Why would you appease Daley he stabs us in the back any chance he gets. I say wait till he comes back from China and then we march city hall 35th and Michigan has no power or coverage.

STOP BEING SHEEP FOP WORKING FOR THE WOLF!

Lack of manpower as well as lack of working coppers in 006 midnights is the reason for that.

9/01/2010 09:42:00 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Coppers from 004, 007, 008 & 022 responded automatically when the "10-1 officer shot" was broadcast, no matter how many cars from 006 were responding. 006 was in a backlog as usual, so not sure how many cars were tied up on priority 1A jobs like domestics, when the 10-1 was broadcast. There was also some confusion at the scene with ALL the squads that responded(approx 50 plus), with the 006 Dist supervisors giving directions to cordon off the area around the house where the search warrant was being executed, and where the injured officers were relocated. The armed offenders were still inside the house, possibly barricaded and very much a threat and the injured officers needed treatment away from this threat. Not sure if the local ambulances were busy on runs but there was a slow or confused response by CFD. A 006 Dist sergeant drove both injured officers to Christ after waiting for ambulances to arrive. Both officers were in good condition with one gun shot wound each, in their arm. Overall it was a GREAT response by the First Watch officers from all the surrounding Districts, given the manpower shortages and someone else maybe able to explain what happened with the CFD response. I would never claim that the CFD responded slowly to an officer shot call, therefore, it must be some other factor(s). God was looking out for the two injured officers.

I responded with my team from the 7th Dis. The 006 Sgt on the scene asked for cars to respond without lights and sirens. The Sgt didn't know the amount of cars that had arrived and had surrounded the house on all sides because the cars arrived in silent. So cars responded in less than a minute. So a lot of cars responded.

I was there last night, came over after broadcasted over zone 6. "We called a 10-1 five minutes ago" is bullshit.

Flipped over to zone 8 while flying over to the scene and I got to say that 660 screaming over the radio didn't help. I know that in this kind of situation 1 minute feels like 5 but how can you call for more cars to the scene at the same time you are screaming "to cordon off a one mile radius around the house" and telling 22nd district cars to block off a route to Christ.

Telling cars not to come lights and sirens to a 10-1 and screaming for ambulances when the P.O.'s were already on their way to Christ in a sgt's car.

The perimeter of the house should be secure while making the entry in case something like this happens. The entry team falls back to cover and the house is already surrounded, there should be no need for a mile perimeter.

Calling over the air an HBT incident and then trying to the people out of the house yourself.

The fact is that there was a lack of on-scene manangement. You DO NOT call for P.O.'s to rush to a house where there is an active shooter inside. Evident by the fact that there were about 30 P.O.'s standing about 15 feet from the rear windows of the house.
As the on-scene supervisor, everyone is going to take their cue from you.

Glad that both P.O.'s are going to be okay.

I was at 71 western when the call came out over zone 6 myself and 2 other cars were there in about 2 minutes and converged on the house to join the guys who and served the warrant. The plain clothes Lt on scene immediately took charge which was great to see and the animals were placed in custody and weapons recovered. Everyone did great the response time was so so but the police showed up in bunches eventually. Great job by everyone on scene way to work together to get the bad guys. My only beef would be boys and girls if bullets don't hit and stay in someone they keep going, be mindful of crossfire! If there was a shootout cops would of definitely shot cops. Other than that Gods speed officers. Great job everyone

the response was great ... cars from 03, 07, 08, 022, tru, Midnight tact team A/1, Gang enforcement, Gang investigation, all showed up. The Lt. from 006 was asking cars from 006 to volunteer for specific jobs to do. Supervisors should supervise, "no"?

Yeah, they all pull the huge property tax increase after they're elected, but you'd think that chaos in the streets -- it's escalated to the point that a panhandler requested "fifty dolla" the other day -- would mitigate against their re-election.

Can't remember the stats offhand, but the last time Channel 9 ran a telephone poll, Daley's approval rating was extremely poor, 32% or something, an all-time low.

What can you say? Even when the police call the police, no one shows up. Getting to be a giant version of Robbins, Ill.

Failed social experiment.

The ambulance DID NOT arrive on scene until 15 minutes later. it was horrifying to see that occur with the radio transmissions and all begging for an ambulance with officers DOWN. Lt. Evans handled everything great. The 006th District Tact, A/2 Gang team was on scene. AREA two gun team handled the inside perimeter of the house. Those gun guys were on the scene backing up everyone as well as other cops from EVERYWHERE, so there was backup, but everyone parked one block or two away to keep a tight perimeter around the scene. From what we saw, the CPD knows how to back up their own. THE ONLY QUESTION IS WHERE WAS THE AMBULANCE??? SOMEBODY SHOULD CHECK ON WHAT TOOK SO LONG? AREN'T THEY SUPPOSED TO FLY TO CALLS LIKE THIS????? WTF?????

How things have changed.

From a large, heavy catalog in my lap --

Over 1000 pages of microscope slides, charts, models, preserved specimens, anything you could think of for biology. Hundreds of people working there.

All gone now. The company folded up its tent and the people fled the area.

I work in MSF. We are now only allowed to go in a small block radius in a district (thanks to that weather forecast crime prevention guessing unit). We were told under no circumstances are we allowed to leave.
The original idea behind MSF is to give assistance to districts that are in need. I believe that when two officers are shot and the district is scrambling to find people, there is no better time to bring in MSF with an instant 150+ officers.
This job and these bosses have become a discrace. The bosses wouldn't even tell us about the incident until it was over, in fear of us just leaving our assigned "blocks" to help officers in need.

thank god the officers are okay. i am sure they were shook up after dealing with the incident. got to say last night there were several neighbors thanking us for doing our job. i guess they had enough of that house too spoiling their nice block. just goes to show you, not everybody is bad. my main point to make on this event is why the ambulance took so long in getting to the scene? in a line from a saturday night live skit. what up with dat? what was up with dat? we know now that the injuries weren't life threatening, but at the scene there was a lot of concern that it could be. i thought the fire department had to respond in a certain time or face major lawsuits? i hope our leaders our checking in this. hearing those radio transmissions as we responded, with the call of where was the ambulance, was bone chilling. it made me hug my kids when i got home in the morning as they got up for breakfast. doing police work, and especially search warrants is and as we know now and always is dangerous work. there seemed to be a lot of cops that responded very well to the 10-1. cause if we don't, who else is?

This is how you gain public support for tax increases if you're a politician.

You let problems get out of control to the point that the public will be willing to do anything.

It's how you win the hearts and minds of the public by using your people as tools for political gains.

The parade of innocent victims will begin soon; the lil' doe-eyed children with media portrayals of their bright futures in spite of the adversity they faced that have been lost, the fallen officers lost, and the wounded hero's all used as political tools to extort tax money

My thoughts and prayers go out to the officers.......

That said it is time to get on my soap box.

The news this morning reported that the search warrant was for weapons. The news also reported that the intended target was a known gangbanger. Now it is not often that I believe much of what I hear on the news but in this instance I'm thinking the news may have their facts straight. I'm also willing to bet this P.O.S. has some fairly bad criminal history. That said, why are teams in this city executing search warrants like this without using S.W.A.T.? How many of my fellow officers lives am I going to have to mourn??? It's time to put ego's aside and think for a minute. Just about everyone who has ever done a warrant will admit that blastin thru pookie's door is big fun. BUT IT'S NOT WORTH IT!!! I'm not sayin that S.W.A.T. is superior to anyone and I'm not sayin P.O's are dumb. The fact is that they have more training, more equipment, and more manpower to safely execute warrants. And if you are too hardheaded to think about your own safety at least have some concern for the guys you work with and their/your family. Think about being the guy that has to explain to someone's wife/kids/parents why their loved one is dead. Then think about living with that decision for the rest of your life. In my time on C.P.D. 14 officers have lost their lives by being shot. That's not to say a S.W.A.T. officer can't by shot either but the odds are better for them. Ok, I'll get off the soap box now and prepare for the "pussy" comments. But just remember I'm only lookin out for my brothers and sisters in blue.

If all you care about is your own personal liability, you might be in the clear for just opening up, but it's generally accepted as part of a simple moral code that, in his role as protector, the policeman tries to avoid killing innocent people, even at some risk to himself.

I'm glad the seniors were taken out with their canes, instead of in body bags. The s__thead is all set; he's gonna sit behind steel, on cement with his "peers," braiding hair and shouting, for many, many years while everyone else enjoys their garden or takes a walk around the block to watch the leaves change color.

Good deal.

Let me try to do this is smartly as possible.

There is a problem going on in Area 2 which is especially evident in 003 and 006. After 3 years of not seeing any PPOs and a lot of the working officers (or officers that would at least back you up) leaving. We are now left with a ton officers who are afraid to leave their car, don't pay attention the radio, don't carry their own workload, won't even look you in the eye and ask "how ya doin'?"

We have a really bad problem going on. There are far too many people afraid of being the police and just never wanted to be the police. And the most unfortunate thing is, there are far too many in the aforementioned district.

Flipped over to zone 8 while flying over to the scene and I got to say that 660 screaming over the radio didn't help. I know that in this kind of situation 1 minute feels like 5 but how can you call for more cars to the scene at the same time you are screaming "to cordon off a one mile radius around the house" and telling 22nd district cars to block off a route to Christ
How would you react when two of your guys got shot? i heard then oemc broadcast and the supervisors didnt scream at all. I thought he did a great job.
The road was blocked so the officers could get to the hospital uniterrupted. What was wrong with that?
That was a well managed scene. 006 bosses and Po's 9 the ones that showed up) did a great job.

I am sorry, but you have a 60 man SWAT that was/is ready and available to execute the entry of that search warrant for you. Your excuse of man power holds no water and the fact that your fellow officers did not die last night, does not make the mission "ok". SWAT is there, trained and equiped to execute these high risk warrants so you can sit back watch the show and reap the rewards of your outstanding police work without getting hurt. In fact a SPECIAL ORDER exists that states you "WILL" contact SWAT to "review" (not necessarily execute) your search warrant if any of the following exist: weapons, violent crimanl history, history of violence against police, fortification, fighting dogs, (i am missing a few things..just look it up) or anything a supevisor feels warrants SWAT's assistance. This is mandated, yet the majority of the department does not follow its own rules! You supervisors who do not call SWAT should be ashamed of yourselves for jeapordizing the lives of your officers for NO REASON! SWAT exists solely to help other policeman, use them!

Well put.

The execution of search warrants is what a SWAT team is for. Every law enforcement agency in the United States of America utilizes SWAT teams for search warrants.

I work tact/gangs in a ghetto area and we have our own ram, pry bar, bolt cutters, and shield. Without exception, on search warrants, the ballistic shield is left in the office. The ballistic shield is looked at as nothing more than another piece of equipment that is heavy, awkward, and a hinderance to the Chicago Police Officers desire to travel lightly. If it doesn't fit in the officers make shift briefcase of a red prisoner's property bag, it is a burden to bring it on the street.

The deployment of a shield during the execution of a search warrant needs to be a mandatory practice. It provides essential protection for the police officers on the entry team and will save police officer's lives.

It's certain that we are going to see more officers injured and killed if the Chicago Police Department doesn't make it a requirement to utilize the SWAT team for search warrant service when they are available. If the SWAT Team is not available, an entry team deploying a ballistic shield for the search warrant must be utilized.

Officers, please think tactically and don't follow the unfortunate trend of deploying the least amount of equipment that you can. Use the shield on every search warrant. Arm yourself with a rifle on every search warrant. Carry extra pistol magazines on your person while on duty. Carry a Taser if you are certified. Carry pepper spray. Carry a baton. Carry a backup handgun.

Had a SWAT team been utilized to make entry into the residence for the execution of the search warrant, there may have been a different outcome. Had a SWAT team been unavailable and a shield deployed by the tactical officers, there could have been a different outcome.

I have worked with both officers and I am happy that they are going to be okay. They are both good guys and the real police.

Heal up quickly and hope to see you guys back soon!

Then he gets on the radio demanding all officer with rifles to head to the location because" we going in there." WTF, this was now an HBT incident with 2 PO's shot!!! Leave that tough guy shit at home b/c this job ain't worth it, let SWAT come and do it correctly.

To 9:08 AM. WE are The Chicago Police. This who we are, this is what we do.

I don't ask anyone to whipe my ass after I take a shit.

Seems some of you guys lost that idea, or never had it.

Actually, you sound like Jody's boys when they left Joe A.

I aint no tuff guy(Chicago accent for the English Majors), but I would NEVER leave my partner.

As I have told recruits, God damn right I'm scared, but if we don't do it, who will?

I paid about $5K last year in Portage Park, for a rinky-dink little house on a 125x25' lot.

Same police service.
Same fire service.
Same streets and san.

WRONG---your neighborhood doesn't get even half of the police service or coverage that these ghetto districts receive.

- MSF is not deployed to that area per the "Big Boss". Do your research before you post a comment. Probably a dog collecting a check!

Ans so you worried about getting yelled at or losing your spot is more important than a fellow officers life?? And don't tell me you didn't hear about it. 10-1's go over citywide, and even though I was off I am confident to say that the 007th District dispatchers put it over Zone 6 due to how close it was to 007 and 008. You are a pussy nothing more...

When I heard that it took 5-minutes for police to respond to a 10-1, I said OMG what has this department come too. I am glad to hear that wasn't the case. Years ago NO call was more important than a 10-1. Supervisor's would hold cars accountable for not responding. This is not the CPD,I knew. It's a shame what Daley has done to this department. What a JOKE... It's also a shame that the FOP has no balls......

There was an assault rifle, Correct ?!?!

Ballistic shields are not rated for rifle, only pistol bullets.

Last time we used SWAT you fucking idiots burned down a house in 005.
Then one of your guys got shot on 79 Peoria a year ago-unnecessarily.
You aint a real SWAT time youre wanna bes and jokes.

I think a lot of the confusion on the scene was caused by someone(maybe 660) sent CFD to 79th Hoyne. We couldn't get back on the the air to tell CFD we were at 77th Hoyne with the injured P.O.'s because of all the traffic on the air. Someone switched over to citywide zone but it was very crazy. 660 was excited and that's understandable due to the circumstances. Everything was taken care of and a Sgt drove the PO's to the hospital. Everything wasn't perfect but it was handled. If you weren't there stop judging.

Wrong, 660 sent beat cars to block off 79 Hoyne and sent CFD to west 77th- Seeley where the uninjured officers were.
Get your facts straight, 660 and 699 did a great job despite the circumstances.
What made this go south was too many people on too many zones giving out too many directions at once, and OEMC not handling the situation well.

obviously your an idot and have never called SWAT. All it takes is to call the MSF office and ask for SWAT. Give a few details of the warrant (what its for, what kind of history, fortification, dogs, etc..) you do not have give out the address or target info or any specific details. If its high risk its a go! And the team does everything they can to accomodate the needs of the team calling.

another genious! unfortunately shit happens sometimes. Warrant was for an AK-47. Place was fortified and the tact team previously tried to execute warrant and dude would flee to basement with rifle. SWAT did an excelent job making entry on a highly fortified location. Dude was holed up in the basement (most likely with rifle, but now melted). Dude in custody, all occupants safely evacuated during a fluke incident.

Any one not on scene should not say anything. I was there i know for a fact that cars from 004, 005, 007 and 022 got there quickly. the Sgt was screaming to keep the air clear and not to put on lights and sirens. Cars may not have come up on radios but i was taught drop everything you're doing and get there! Pull the GPS and 79th st pod cameras before spreading the wrong information. Glad the PO's are okay
