Join the Police Department

Once again, the smartest readers in the world read the SCC blog, and they predicted that the next police exam would be administered on 11 December. Behold!
  • The Chicago Police Department has raised the minimum age for becoming an officer to encourage a more mature force — and is offering a new hiring preference for military veterans, officials said Thursday.

But the department is not scrapping a requirement that applicants complete at least two years of college — something the chairman of the City Council’s Police Committee had sought to “level the playing field” for minorities.

Police Supt. Jody Weis announced the department will administer a written entrance exam on Dec. 11 — the first test in four years. The department will accept applications through Nov. 26.

J-Fled sure seems to be rushing things. After all, we haven't had an exam in four years, only hired three or four classes of recruits, haven't made a detectives class in three years and made maybe four total promotional classes during J-Fled's tenure. Now suddenly, an exam is in the offing and will be thrown together in under 30 days. Can a class be far behind?

This smells badly of desperation and although J-Fled doesn't directly control hiring, he could have been making a stink about low numbers three years ago when he got here.

Dear Potential New Recruits,

This department is in decline. What was once the greatest job in the world is now just a paycheck and us sitting on our hands waiting for J-Fled to leave, CCSAO to actively give a shit in pursuing charges and housing these animals, and business to return to normal.

And no matter how much of a do-gooder or liberal or whatever is your motivation for signing up.. you'll see... Humanity will completely disappoint your expections.

Climb aboard!!!

Check out their CPD Recruitment Web site: www.ChicagoPolice.org/AnswerTheCall/ Read the bottom and prepare to vomit:

"We (the CPD) offer excellent opportunities for career advancement through promotions and assignments to specialized units."

Riiiiight! Master your gag reflex if you are sane with career options, including law enforcement elsewhere, and are delusional enough to apply to the CPD.

It's all legit, kid. Just bring your kneepads, lobster bib and a gallon of industrial strength Listerine.

There are still 30 or so candidates who won appeals with the city, left on the 2006 list. What are they going to do with us. Heck, they called us in Sept and said we would start 01 November... WTF, are we being skipped? We've already passed everything twice, do I have to reapply so the city can pay for another round of test for me!!! WOW

It will be interesting to see how many suckers apply for this, even with the economy in devastation.

In 1991 they had over 45,000 applicants.

The economy is much worse today than back then.

At this point in the game, I wouldn't wish this job on my worst enemy.

Unless there is absolutely no other option on the employment table, the kids got kicked out of private school for non-payment of tuition, the house is in foreclosure and the old lady left you for the guy with the greasy hair and limp that bags your groceries because his check is bigger than yours...TAKE A PASS ON THIS JOB.

Conservative estimates via informal "morale surveys" peg this job (and city as a whole) as terminally ill...flacid...lame..."not what is used to be" (or will ever be again)...on it's last leg...you pick the descriptor that fits best.

While recovery of a percentage of the "glory days" of the CPD are possible, we ain't gonna see that for a long, long time.

Sure, join the police department. Come here, decide on a post grad degree, get it while working here, take advantage of the tuition reimbursement program to get the City to pay your tuition. Stay the required two years after your degree so you do not have to pay it back and then find a job in a properly run organization and leave and don't look back.

This place is a cluster fuck and many have come here thinking they can deal with it and end up totally disgusted and frustrated.

It isn't going to change any time soon. Remember that if you take the test and succeed in getting hired.

The paychecks are steady, in this economy that means a lot. The retirement benefits are likely to be less than they are now. Many things a new employee will encounter here will not make sense. You will work shit districts around the lowest scum people you can imagine and you will work shit hours. Your family life will suffer in ways you cannot imagine. At some point you will wonder why you ever applied.

If that doesn't drive you to an alternate career and you are a glutton for punishment, give it a shot and best of luck to you.

Be sure to read the post about the recent lawsuit in the 018th District for a sampling of the CPD at it's worst.

Since CPD is not looking for college grads under 25, does that make me over qualified or inmature?

Unfortunately, it's not that simple. Jobs in the private sector are hard to get. That degree from SXU, Jerry Lewis, or Calumet College means nothing. The ticklish question is who in their RIGHT MIND would come on this job NOW given the CURRENT STATE of CPD?

We are amused by the shit-talkers whining on the scum-times and fibune online comment board.

Well... Shit-talkers, here's your GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY to sign up, come aboard and show "the currupt, brutal old-time cops" how YOU would do things differently.

...A bunch of noisy, over-entitled brats nursing false outrage and an ass-pocket full of simple-minded opinions (and no genuine insight or pertinent life experience for balance) and a teeth grinding grudge in general against blue suits with brass buttons.

It's all about their yellow-pinky, head in the sand with no expectation of getting kicked in the ass vision on how they think (with more than generous prompting by the Daley Inc. media spin/control and public brain-washing and propaganda apparatus) Policing SHOULD be done in this city.

These misguided children have NO IDEA how they've annointed the shit-birds and mouth-breathers as the new princes of the city and compelled the Police to stand down to the point of the minimum required by law, which is a VERY LOW THRESHOLD considering the REAL MUTHAFUCKIN' (proactive, all up in all y'all crook muthafuckahs biz-naz, bust an iron-toed boot in that ass cuz we da damn law!) PO-LEECE standard that has been set, accepted and encouraged for generations to maintain SOME semblance of order in the streets.

How far have the Mighty Men in Blue been made to fall for the sake of political fuckery!

Coppers have gone from the hunters to the hunted for the sake of political fuckery.

Yeah! Join up, shit-talkers!

You too can sacrifice 20 to 40 plus years of your life and leave a sacrifice of blood, sweat, tears and the lives of friends on the streets of Chicago only to be told on a daily basis that those sacrifices didn't mean SHIT just because you wear a blue suit with brass buttons.

The public has the Police Department they've been crying for...

Just wait until the hard won collective street knowledge REALLY STARTS LEAVING...

Which was part of the plan anyway.

The "old" street cops are "too unmanageable" i.e. too wise in the ways of City of Chicago and CPD institutional bullshit and too aware of their contractual rights and how those rights can and will be violated with impunity.

The administration loves the young aggressive go-getters who traded rights and protections to wear blue jeans and or black/green pajamas.

We're not "hating" and we don't begrudge anyone doing what they choose to do but the current state has divide to conquer written all over it in such large letters.

Why would people flock to these units in such numbers to provide the bosses an "out" regarding
diminished Police presence and ability for the Patrol Division to Police rabid dogs they way they should be Policed?

Now noise is being made because people are now supposedly being held hostage in these units by bosses because they "voluntarily"
waived any contractual rights when they joined? What sort of insanity is that?

Is that CPD's official stance now? "Fuck you, we got warm bodies where we need 'em, grieve it then. It'll be years before it's resolved so we win anyway."

The current bosses are the smartest people in the history of CPD. They should be more than capable (in their humble estimation) of fixing that which has been broken beyond repair or salvage by those much higher up the food chain.

We just hope to live long enough to see those responsible for the current state of affairs twisting in the wind on the same gallows they built for The Police.

Sic Semper Tyrannis.

Viva Hate...

One big class of sgts in November and then Promotional tests are done. They all come down December 1 with no more promotions. Dept no longer wants newly made dicks becoming sgts after only a couple of years.

New Detective and Sgt test in February after the recruit test by the same outside firm. One rumor has the department letting PO's take ONLY one test. In the other option the department will make sgt and dick promotions at the same time every couple of years forcing people on both lists to pick one and drop their spot on the other. The dept is figuring out how the contract impacts either of these options.

This will end the cadet program. Every major department has some form of a apprentice program. Either a cadet or community service officer. With the age restriction, that eliminates all of the cadets. many who have worked for the CPD for several years. They worked for minimum wage and no benefits with the hope of being a CPD. Previous Superintendents understood the value of the cadet program. The remaining cadets should quit and look at other agencies.

I totally disagree with the new age requirement to join the department. I have been interested in the CPD for awhile, and now I am being rejected just like several other people who don't meet the new entrance requirements.

It seems to me like they are just seeking military veterans, since they are giving them 20 percent preference points. I still believe they need to keep the college requirement, though, since a high school diploma is nothing nowadays. I think the department needs to do a better job at screening its applicants to begin with; it would eliminate a lot of problems with new officers. The department should only be hiring people who are mature and responsible individuals to begin with. Obviously they are not, so this new initiative will not change a thing.

This is just a shame!! A large department, like CPD offers several advantages to new recruits that they would not be able to experience elsewhere. I guess CCSPD, Aurora, or Elgin are the departments to apply for now, after hearing about all the problems that CPD has had recently.

You need residency the by the first day of the academy, but you need the 60 credits by the time you take the written test.

WRONG. Your requirements must be met by the day of being hired. i.e. military, college and residency

CPD doesn't need to hire any officers if they would reassign officers from desk duty to street duty . Get rid of non IOD light duty assignments , rehire the light duty as civilians at half theit pay rate.

I have NO problem in anything that is done for our veterans!

But WTF? why exclude a huge portion of college graduates who have received a 4 year degree in Criminal Justice/ Law Enforcement just because they're not yet 25 years of age?

They've received more training that our Academy can possibly provide, and look at the savings for the Department as far as tuition reimbursement goes.

Plus these kids are looking forward to a career in law enforcement, not someone who can't find another job, and wants to ride the Department until their post graduate studies are completed.

Another classic Fuck-up provided by our host J-Fled and Co. Keep up the shitty work boys... I can't wait until February!!!!

To young to handle life's situations ; who might you be kidding? Your comment has shown your age. Twenty one is old enough to drive, to vote, to buy and consume alcohol, to be in any armed forces and die for this country, go to college of their choice and subsequently have enough responsibility to pay for 100 k in tuitions and you have the audacity to say they need their and daddy. Well soon enough the young will be spoon feeding you, wiping your behind and changing your diaper! It is time for retirement or are you one of those salty three years on the job know it alls?????

If many PO's actually worked their full hours as opposed to leaving a couple hours (or even 45 minutes) early, there would be more man-power. What's up with HQ's people coming in a 9 and leaving at 2 for the day?

FYI-You don't have to be a citizen to be a Chicago Police Officer either. Just have a work authorization i.e. Green Card. Don't believe me? Here is the link. Outstanding isn't it.

Daley did this to get some Irish guys on about 15 years ago- You have Patrolmen. Sgts. Lts. and exempt who are not citizens, they have green cards. I worked with at least 5 throughout the years however there is about 200 on the job- ALL are Irish no Mexicans.

Non-Citizens have been eligible to be the police since at least 1981. I'm pretty sure that precedes Daley as Mayor.

Wrong...I tried that in 2006...and was escorted out of the Power Testing Room.

Credit Hours must meet minimum Required upon completing the Application to take the Police Test
it even says so in the app.
